- Death of Krishna
The death of Krishna, a pivotal event in Hindu mythology and theology, is described in various ancient texts, including the Mahabharata, the Bhagavata Purana, and other Puranas. His death marks the end of the Dvapara Yuga and the beginning of Kali Yuga, the current age according to Hindu cosmology. Below is a detailed explanation of the circumstances surrounding Krishna’s death:
Background Leading to Krishna’s Death
After the Kurukshetra War described in the Mahabharata, Krishna returned to his kingdom in Dwarka. However, events began to unfold that would lead to his demise. The curse of Gandhari played a significant role in this sequence. Gandhari, grieving over the loss of her 100 sons during the war and blaming Krishna for not preventing it despite his divine powers, cursed him. She declared that Krishna’s clan (the Yadavas) would perish within 36 years and that he himself would die a lonely death.
Over time, this curse began to manifest. The Yadava clan became arrogant and unruly due to their prosperity and power. Their behavior led them to insult sages who visited Dwarka. One such incident involved Krishna’s son Samba dressing as a pregnant woman to mock the sages. Enraged by this disrespectful act, the sages cursed Samba that he would give birth to an iron mace that would destroy their entire clan.
This curse came true when Samba later gave birth to an iron mace. Fearing its consequences, King Ugrasena ordered it to be ground into powder and thrown into the sea. However, some fragments remained intact and were washed ashore.
The Destruction of the Yadava Clan
The remnants of the iron mace eventually led to internal strife among the Yadavas during a festival at Prabhas Patan (modern-day Gujarat). Intoxicated by alcohol and overcome with arrogance, they began quarreling among themselves. This escalated into a violent conflict where they used reeds growing onshore (which had grown from the powdered remains of Samba’s mace) as weapons. These reeds turned into iron rods upon being plucked from the ground.
In this fratricidal war, all members of Krishna’s clan killed one another until none were left alive except for Krishna himself and his charioteer Daruka.
Krishna’s Death
After witnessing the destruction of his people as foretold by Gandhari’s curse, Krishna retreated into meditation in a forest near Prabhas Patan. While resting under a tree in deep contemplation about Dharma (righteousness) and cosmic order, he was accidentally struck by an arrow shot by Jara, a hunter.
Jara mistook Krishna’s partially visible foot for that of a deer while hunting nearby. The arrow pierced Krishna’s foot-specifically his heel-which was vulnerable because it was not protected by divine power like other parts of his body.
Realizing his mistake after approaching Krishna, Jara begged for forgiveness. In response, Krishna consoled him and explained that everything was predestined as part of cosmic law (Lila). He assured Jara that his actions were merely instruments in fulfilling divine will.
Krishna then ascended from his mortal form back to Vaikuntha (his eternal abode), marking his departure from Earth after completing his mission.
