I can say that the comparison is a little bit misleading. For example if you compare rdp using windows to connect to another windows, you would get a much flawless result. Just the microsoft implementation of the rdp service is better as it doesn't redraw the window that you are moving on every mouse move unless you release the left mouse button. I've been using both protocols in the past and for windows I don't use anything other than rdp. And in addition transferring files from remote pc on windows using rdp is a lot easier than vnc.

VNC is better, but now we have ThinLinc...
      ThinLinc has amazing performance.

I was watching this video and wondering why it was so laggy. Turns out I was watching this through a browser on another machine's VNC session.

very useful. nice use of docker, great for testing and sharing others can test it out!

Hi. Did you try "LAN (10 Mbps or higher)" of the performance tab? Because, if my understanding is correct, it enables RemoteFX and performs very smoothly. I tested it and got an excellenet experience.

Yea, this setting makes or breaks my xrdp experience

The reason why I choose Xrdp is actually for performance. Something is clearly off here. VNC is relatively dumb with how it transfers data over the network, it transfers full images all the time, which slows down things a LOT.
I would love to see the same test performed over an actual network.
And I am also quite certain that the docker file contains a lot more commands then actually needed.
For example if you just used the correct name .xsession instead of .xsessionrc you would not have to add it to the file in /etc, but you can leave it alone.

I have no horse in this race, but the biggest part of that lag is coming down to the resolution. You are streaming in 1920x1080.
Now, if you're on a LAN, it SHOULD still be smooth. But that is what you should have cut back on to see if it made a different. You should have went to 720p or maybe less, compared image quality and then, also, tested the smoothness.
The other options are moot in saving bandwidth. But, then, again, if it's on LAN, it should handle it just fine even if it was in 4K.
If it stays laggy even in the lowest resolution, I'd hope that there is a setting for update-rate or something. That or the bitrate you can allocate. If it has neither, then that is very short sighted.
I don't recall RDC acting like that when I tested it out years ago on my Windows PC and my Samsung Galaxy phone. It would have been an older phone, too, and all over W-Fi. Or, TECHNICALLY, my PC has always been connected to my router via Ethernet and my phone would have been connected to the router via 5ghz Wi-Fi.
Maybe it was laggy and I don't recall. I want to try it, again, but I do not like having RDC ports open on my PC lol.

I'm new to containers and was curious to know if it was possible to RDP to a container. Appreciate it

interesting, I get the opposite. Connecting to an actual remote ubuntu desktop I get much better UI performance with xrdp than vnc (using vnctiger client on macos).
