My Top 10 Baseline Archaeology & Human Evolution Books // University Pre-reading Recommendations

  • My Top 10 archaeology books to read before university! I will be releasing a part 2 for this video asap focusing solely on female writers because I am ashamed at my lack of author diversity. Unfortunately, most of the books that I read during university (and therefore can recommend) were by men because the discipline is pretty saturated with white male authors. Of course, this also then means that the discipline is pretty saturated with opinions formed on white male experiences which is not representative or valid. I am going to do some proper digging through my old notes and the internet to find some diversity :)

    Hi Rosie! I'm an archaeology student in the US, and at least here in the states, Jared Diamond is very highly criticized for Guns, Germs, and Steel for being ignorant of the archaeological record and making such broad claims that they end up being less than useful and innacurate. In laymen discussions, I've also heard it used as justification for imperialism, but I think those people are missing the point. Anyways, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on this as someone who is more advanced in the subject than I am. should he be read with a grain of salt? Do you also recommend reading responses to that book as well? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!

      Hi Katie, yes definitely! I would always read responses to books but definitely for this one. If you cite him in work too then that criticism you've written is also brilliant to include but try and find a source that you can cite.

    Jared Diamond isn't an archaeologist or anthropologist. Books on environmental archaeology would be much helpful than his books for a beginner.
    Also, I think 'A History of Archaeological Thought' by Bruce Trigger and 'Contemporary Archaeology in Theory' (Ian Hodder) would be better for a grasp of archaeological theory.
    Archaeology: The Key Concepts by Renfrew and Bahn for fundamental concepts in the subject.

    • @RosieCrawford
      @RosieCrawford  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the concepts within Jared Diamond's books that will help with understanding. He is a geographer and anthropologist & the two subjects go hand in hand; looking at how the subjects fuse is a great starting point. I agree with Bruce Trigger as an addition, yes! I also read his books during my degree at Oxford.

    I think anyone should write on any subject aslong they have the evidence and research to back it up. Why should the authors own background make so much difference? The facts should be the facts right?

    • @RosieCrawford
      @RosieCrawford  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it really does make a difference. Authors choose to focus on and research what they deem to be important and this varies greatly by class, gender, sexuality, race etc... Particularly in the past, white male versions of history have been presented as the only 'truth' because that is how the west has viewed history- truth. These versions of history made it to the top and have remained there until fairly recently when their monopoly began to be questioned. This is why university reading lists are still predominantly these books but that is changing. I did a whole topic on 'history and memory' lol so I do enjoy talking about it. You're right though, facts should be facts but it mostly doesn't play out like that in archaeology from experience because no one truly knows what went on in the ancient world.

    • @RosieCrawford
      @RosieCrawford  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course anyone has the right to write about anything with evidence and research though!

    You lost me at 1:30, like really…. I don’t give a shit of the book was written by a pineapple upside down cake. If the person writing the book or text is qualified to do so then so be it idk what it is with college professors and students complaining about the lack of women and “people of color” in certain areas of work and study. Maybe they just aren’t interested in these subjects! Also archeology and anthropology aren’t super popular subjects so that answers your question why there aren’t more women or “people of color”

    • @RosieCrawford
      @RosieCrawford  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it doesn't. Both disciplines were founded on colonialism, racism, and social evolutionism. Consequently, both disciplines have always had an us vs them kind of undertone, which cannot be deconstructed without diversification of the subjects and listening to the voices and experiences of people from different backgrounds. Furthermore, every individual has different experiences and these lived experiences are very dependent on where we come from, who we come from, and what we look like. How can we properly understand artefacts, cultures and ancient people if we are only looking through the eyes (aka experiences) of white men?

      @@RosieCrawford You're dvmb AF. Almost all archeologists through history were men, whereas women were not interested in archeology on average, and nowadays it is not much more different than before. If the majority of archeologists would have been women, then we would have another reality. As simple as that. Also, reality doesn't care about your ridiculous personal biases.
