Right when you start on the first level he says "I live.. again..." thats a reference to Army of Darkness
I know why didn't he say that evil dead is one of my favorite movies
Also, when you beat the final boss and Caleb says: "good... bad... I'm the guy with the gun". Reference to the same movie.
Could be they were considered too obvious.
Also "NOT FOR LONG!"
Also isnt the severed Hand behind Bars that Screams "Im gonna take your soul" in the Carnival Level a refrence to evil dead 2 ?
Also "shebitch, let's go" is from army of darkness.
EP2 M1 - Shipwrecked: Where Caleb encounters the Jaw fish, he quotes, "We're gonna need a bigger boat." Which is a quote from the movie, "Jaws".
That quote is wrong in the movie he actually says your going to need a bigger boat

I think the official remaster takes it a step out of "underrated," but I'd argue it's probably the least known of the Build engine titles. At least Duke and Shadow Warrior have modern day equivalents, Blood's just got the remaster which just came out.

In this game, the main character itself is not even a hero. Caleb is the villain after all..

@@yukich6957 something that always confused me was how Caleb was supposed to be a psychopath who kills innocent people for thier life essences, then he wants to avenge ophelia and his friends even though a psychopath can't form relationships
Oh, I forgot, the entire setting of E1M1 is also a reference to Morningside Cemetary in Phantasm

E1M3 "Get Off My Train!" is a reference to Air Force One, in which Harrison Ford plays the President of the USA who's had his plane overtaken by terrorists. Before throwing one out, he yells "GET OFF MY PLANE!!!11"
Or it can be a reference to the movie "Ghost", where the phrase appears verbatim.
I assumed it was from Twilight Zone, with the thing on the wing of the plane
This game has in my eyes the best easter eggs.

In the Jason easter egg, it's also thought the head on the table is a reference to his mother who in later films is shown to be kept as a mummified head.
The cheat for invisibility is "onering" which I believe is a reference to the Lord of the Rings: One ring to rule them all - which also makes the bearer invisible.
It took me a long time to get that reference, since the game was made long before the movies and I didn't know about the books until after Fellowship was in theaters.
Amazing job you've done, there were a lot of references I hadn't noticed. There's one you missed in E2M2: after jumping down the latrine (moon key door), Caleb says something like "what a wonderful smell I've discovered". That's a quote from "Star Wars: A new hope", when Han Solo and the rest fall down into the trash compactor.
Gonna quickly point out the fact that the entire Crystal Lake is a reference to Camp Crystallake (most of the Friday the 13th movies take place there) AND you can hear his famous catchphrase "Kill Kill Kill, Mom Mom Mom" (No it ain't Ki Ki Ki, Cha Cha Cha as some of you think, it's been confirmed by the film makers.)
Also the level that The Shining easter egg was in was called something similar to Overlook Hotel, the location of the events in The Shining.

Yeah and the zombie head on the altar next to Jason's accessories is his mother's head, from the first 2 movies.
You forgot about Hands "I swallow your soul" as "Evil Dead" reference, also small Calebs as reference from "Army of Darkness"
*BLOOD* 1997 is a cult masterpiece among FPS shooters. This game perfectly combines Shakespeare quotes and references to various films, and all this is seasoned with dark humor and violence.
Man, I remember playing this game when I was 8 years old. It made me shit my pants a few times, specially with the hand jumping out of nowhere to choke Caleb or the ghosts screaming while flying towards the player.
And the fácking giant spiders...
Thanks for this. There was a few I'd forgotten and even a couple totally new to me though I've played Blood at least a dozen times over the years. A couple other references: the bodies in the drums are from _Return of the Living Dead_ as is the zombies' "More brains" line (Tar Man!). Also if you're an art nerd you probably recognized the Blood universe versions of Raphael's Three Graces and Cezanne's Still Life With Curtain scattered around a few maps.
This has always been a personal theory of mine, but I think the cultists themselves may be modeled after the cultists in the movie "The Devil's Rain".

The Morning Side Cemetery in e1m1 is a reference to Phantasm (1979).

You missed to reference the opening level as a reference to the Morningside cemetery/funeral home from Phantasm, and the line "Get off my train!" in E1M3 referencing the movie Ghost. Great video though!

Ok. Let's be real here, games made before 2000s are some of the best games ever made, trumping games to date.
They came out as full games, we're worked hard on for the experience, not just the money (looking at you EA) and were genuinely inviting and creative (even if it was horror).

@@soulsphere9242 that is so true. Games were made with heart and soul during the 90s. Then AAA games started becoming expensive to make and then welp, quality went out the window just so they could save money. Although there are amazing AAA games, nothing has really lived up to what the 90s gave us

c1995 to c2005 was the golden age of gaming, producing the vast majority of the true classics and masterpieces we revere today -- and that was the norm, rather than the exception it is now. Games before that were generally too clunky, primitive and simple in gameplay, story and graphics. Games after that, well really began the era of AAA trash/soulless commercialism and infinite halfassed greenlight projects that we're still enduring today. Not that there aren't many incredible games since '05, don't get me wrong, but as far as the mainstream industry goes they've been few and far between. Worst of all the general standards of acceptability have become very low indeed (unfinished content & massive bugs at release, lack of support, loot boxes, pay-to-win, microtransactions, endless DLC that should've been included to begin with, etc etc). Also, the toxic plague of 'wokeness', social justice and general left ideology that's become a cancer on our games and surrounding culture/community.
Thank god for remasters and the rise of indie development.
I won't get into gamergate as that's more the journalistic side of the industry, but it's just another symptom of the overall degeneration since the golden age.

In Phantom Express, when Caleb enters in one of the wagons he says: "Get off my train!" That a quote from Ghost (1990 movie starring Patrick Swayze).

You forgot two references in Phantom 666 (the name of stage and a quote: "Get of my train!", this quote becomes from film "Ghost").
In the demo, Caleb made the Kool-Aid reference in the first level, when drinking from the bag of medical blood in the crematory. He'd suck from the hose and then say, "Ahhh... better than Kool-Aid." And after winning the life seed from the carnival game, he'd just say, "Yipee!"
Oh, and also... at the start of the final level in episode 3, where you face Cerberus, Caleb says, "Cujo?" - referencing the title character of that movie.
At 2:10 when he jumps the ledge. Does it not look like a letter where a secret message would be written on the wall???

Yes it was. "Drinking the Kool-Aid" is referencing the fact that some cults in the past had their members commit mass suicide by drinking poisoned Kool-Aid.

E1M2: 4 secret is a double secret - from the Simpsons and Shadow Warrior. The first text in the game is a reference to "Army of Darkness" There are many more references - at E2EM is a reference to Star Wars. And so on ^^
Hm, seems like Fresh Supply fixed a Super Secret at Hallowed Grounds level. In vanilla Blood the ledge you land on drains your health as it has assigned tag of damaging ground (so jumping down with less then 200 hp or without Invulnerability is suicidal). In this pack you jumped down without power-up and your health wasn't drained

It’s Pamela Voorhees’ head after being decapitated and out in Jason’s shrine.
Not at all. It's a reference to Friday the 13th part 2 where Jason made a shrine in his shack to his dead mother Pamela Voorhees. He kept her clothes, more importantly, her sweater and her severed head that Alice, the final girl in the previous movie, chopped off at the finale of the first film.

In Movie ,,Soul Carnaval" in scen when main character is going to textylia store/clothes store is very simmilar place (up and down level of store) like in Post mortem first level. In 35 minute exacly.
You see, that head near Jason's stuff is Jason's mother's head.
Also, Miskatonic station and Cuesta Verda mall are refs to Reanimator movies.
We can't play Blood for 5 mins without bump into a reference!
Fun fact, you don't need to dynamite jump to get that first super secret. There's a weird way you can jump from the hole in the wall that leads to the exit room that will give you a speed boost into the napalm launcher.

Thanks for the video! I bought Blood Fresh supply recently, and in the E2L4 map Overlooked hotel, the portal to the secret level was working before I found the tomes so finding the secret level confused me. Also,in the same map there is a room in witch you can open the bed top to the secret corridor behind (you can see the red painted wall at 8:35 in this video) and I wonder if it is a reference to the Looney tunes Translylvania 6-5000 episode where Count Bloodcount gets behind Bug' s bedroom.

Blood was part of the Build gang (Duke 3D, Shadow Warrior, Ruins aka Exhumed)
they were kinda doing their own thing to be honest. but it's funny that you mention DOOM
in the public Alpha of Blood you can see sprites from DOOM that they used as placeholders.
