either one would work fine, but if you are going for a 90s/2000s punk sound (the punk rock sound that uses mesa boogie rectifiers) the SM7 is hands down the way to go. this pedal is LITERALLY a mesa in a box :) the smash box is without a doubt the best distortion pedal i have ever used. tone secret; get a sick clean just like "in the blues" does, then set the pedal on top of that clean tone, then enjoy the gorgeous tone inside this pedal :)
@guitar62751 Those TS7 are great pedals, I didn't have lot of luck with mine, the foot switch went on it but it was a ripper! Thanks for the comments mate, I hope the new style of video (2 cameras) is more interesting for everyone :)
This one's a gem. I play it with a telecaster through a Bassman 100, and it's all the distortion I need. I wouldn't say it sounds particularly "metal" (though I suppose it can), but also has an airy yet dense quality to it, which makes the switch from clean to distorted a very smooth one. Very nice Powerpop ditty, if intended to.
You have a really good clean signal. And that's most probably why this pedal sounded good in this vid. No matter what, I'm going to buy one later at only S$40.
I just bought one just for fun and it's amazing! Big surprise! A solid Wall of Rock. A great addition to my Pedalboard. I'm so glad I stumbled over it... And it was a bargain :-)
This was my favorite pedal for as long as I had it, before it was stolen. A nice clean distortion overdrive with the built-in Noise Gate mainly just to cut out the high pitch feedback swells when you're not playing. If you love loud Hard Rock/punk-rock and trying to get a clean sound especially for recording, I can't recommend anything better. I've been trying to replace it for two years now. Either the same or something like it. I've seen a few people modding them online, THAT has to be a fun project.
I own a Smashbox for 5 - 6 years now. I personally always thought of it being too loud of a pedal for my taste and I've kept it on the same setting for years. That's probably why I use my boss blues driver at the beginning of my pedal board and the Smashbox at the end ( and sometimes I remove it for long periods). But I don't know, for some reason your video sound way better than the way mine sound here, which to me is strange. I really dig the setting you have at 3:00. Keep on rocking, dude!!
@Joetp yeah me too this was more for fun :) I don't know if I'll use it a lot or at all but it will be fun if I need uber-distortion. Although, it was surprisingly smooth for a high gain pedal.
what i realized with the noise gate is, although it cuts noise instantly, it simultaneously decreases the sustain. so don't be too happy with the built-in noise gate. Just select the low setting of the noise gate or otherwise, use volume knob control.
When you play Diminished,Flat 5's, Augments or Sus. chords there is almost no intermodulation. You can hear all the chord tones. The smash-box doesn't have a lot of mid-range "hump". So it is EASY to MIX when recording. The SM-9 (good pedal) gives me hell when mixing. In it's cheap price range it's hard to beat the sm-7.
@uiterniels the SM7 has more controls.So it would be easier to get a good punk sound.Also turn down the low to around to around 2 or 3 and put the high to max.
I had a Boss MT-2 in back in 2000. SOLD THAT SHIT ! Bought a Smash Box.....bought another one! When you play Diminished,Flat 5's, Augments or Sus. chords there is almost no intermodulation. You can hear all the chord tones! I still use it as my main distortion box. But they're kind of fragile, so be a big boy(girl) and KEEP THEM CLEAN. Unlike Boss pedals,the switch connections are very small. The built-in noise gate is also very cool.
Cant say enough about this pedal as well the series of the ibanez 7 pedals. I have a PH7 (phaser) and a DE7 (echo/delay) in addition to this one. The low and high Eq give it so much more flexibility. Its just a tad thin sounding but at the type of distortion its trying to achive, its perfect. ibanez pedals just rule i think ( tube screamer n shit).
I have two of these crazy pedals so I always have a backup if one fails. I love jamming with new people on rock/metal night and bringing a single-coil equipped strat running through a Vox. I always get laughed at a little till I push the button on one of these little monsters and start out chugging the humbuckers. Yes, these pedals are stupid, but stupid fun and nothing else comes close. They are not transparent pedals in the least, they are gonna make your whatever guitar sound like the video. I run very little treble, about halfway for bass, about two o'clock for gain and halfway or so for level, leave it on smooth and depending on the lighting and monitors and such, might engage the noise gate. If I want to go for my Dime impersonation, just click it to sharp. If I want ZZ Top, I just turn the gain ALL the way down. They are actually better pedals than most people give them credit for if you just fiddle with it a little. I remember a friend of mine paid a fair amount of money for the Dime Distortion when it first came out and was all proud of it. He showed it off and I just laughed, shook my head and handed him one of these preset to a good dime setting and he A/Bed them. The little Smashbox out Dimed the Dime pedal. He was furious. I love these little stupid, ridiculous pedals.
@intheblues Im more into Overdrives myself, but then again I bought a ModTone Speedbox this week for lead parts and solos. I have it on a pretty low gain setting though.
Prices for these Tone Lok pedals are steadily creeping up on evilbay. So somebody out there has decided these are quite cool again! I do like mine I must admit, though I really only bought it because of the noise gate. Very easy access to battery compartment too.
Didn't find out about this pedal until 2019 I liked it so much I bought a second one to back it up because they don't make them no more obviously! At least I don't think they make them anymore!
Well, this is a good pedal with a singel coil guitar and in a few days I will know how does it sounds like with the humbuckers. Oh,there's a little bug in it: when U use the noise-suppressor mode, forget the typical overdrive sustain: it suppresses this, too! :P Maybe U can try to hear how does it work with a compressor (I haven't tried yet)... Sorry for my bad English, I don't speak it very well...
why wouldnt that void switch always be on? Feedback stopped being cool after The Who... anyway, does that void switch only suppress noise from this pedal or can it be used as a noise gate for your entire setup?
Is this pedal really worth it? I mean I have the DS7, FZ7, TS7, SH7, and generally every single Tone Lok pedal (Except Weeping Demons). I mean I don't know if I should get it or not.
I have one and it sounds good, but it has alot of high volume noise, that yours doesnt seem to have, mine might be jacked up. Any ideas on how to fix something like that?
personally i think its much better when you're using single coils for it, i got this pedal and using humbucker it generates too much noise on half of drive pot and sound doesn't make much difference raising drive pot. thats my opinion, i saw many video demos of this pedal and i thought "i have to get this pedal !!" but now i think it's mostly useless (maybe for solos only)
I just rediscovered mine im a pile of junk in the basement....made me realize how much bass i usually cut out of my sound haha this pedal can add instant balls lol
Damn... this pedal is not for a tele man! Try using some sort of superstrats equipped with humbuckers. They are built for METAL! \m/ Despite the fact that there's already a BOSS MT-2 on my board, I sill keep this pedal on to give myself a different metal sound.

Love this pedal. Used to put it in front of my Fender Princeton amp and got some great great rock tones.
That sounds pretty awesome. Be good for 90s stuff like Soundgarden & Stone Temple Pilots.
@Mystro810 yes the void switch can be used as a gate for your entire board.

Every time I see a demo of yours.. I buy the pedal.
Mate, you're so good!! If you're ever just north of Sydney I'd love to have a jam.
Thanks a lot for the kind words mate!
Great demo! Nice to see it used in blues.
thanks for the video, I picked up one of these in a pawn shop for $20.
What a nice deal
10 points for the lefty Tele!
I think I'm starting to appreciate these 7-series pedals more and more.
i recently bought this pedal, works amazing.

I thought it would be some crazy cool modulation but the pedal just sounds like my amp. Passing on this one

Not a bad drive. It has a good crunchyness to it

Damn dude wth did the pedal do to you?
I really like this pedal. Its much better than for example marschall jackhammer. Its a keeper! And ill will be keeping mine for a long time :)
Klo untuk melodi dangdut, kira2 cocok nggak? 🙏
You got the way better deal. These smoke.
Where'd you learn that sick lick at 1:56
@intheblues Im more into Overdrives myself, but then again I bought a ModTone Speedbox this week for lead parts and solos. I have it on a pretty low gain setting though.
@7dayaddiction Cheers dude, it's a ball-tearin' sound

Reinemachefrau How do I get to the actual compartment on this pedal? Friend gave me his and I have no idea where to put an actual battery
I used to have this pedal. It is amazing!
Didn't find out about this pedal until 2019 I liked it so much I bought a second one to back it up because they don't make them no more obviously! At least I don't think they make them anymore!
Nice Tele Dude!:D
What about the EDGE switch on the right???
@Joetp lol thanx :)
@uiterniels SM7, the DS7 is very fuzzy.
Man i love your tele. What amp are you playing through?
Great vid. :)
Are you from WA? Lol
I just found a bargain on one of these. I might just go for it!
Well, this is a good pedal with a singel coil guitar and in a few days I will know how does it sounds like with the humbuckers.

My favourite pedal ever. But the telecaster is the wrong guitar to demo this one.
guitar? is Squier Classic vibe 50s?
why wouldnt that void switch always be on? Feedback stopped being cool after The Who... anyway, does that void switch only suppress noise from this pedal or can it be used as a noise gate for your entire setup?
@dixonschikye i don't know it, i'll see that on youtube =)
Why reverb though??
Is this pedal really worth it? I mean I have the DS7, FZ7, TS7, SH7, and generally every single Tone Lok pedal (Except Weeping Demons). I mean I don't know if I should get it or not.
Can you review this pedal again with your current gear. The sound quality you have now is sooo much better. 😄. Cheers Rusty
I gave this pedal away mate, sorry.
this is clean? there's tons of reverb
nice pedal though!
I have one and it sounds good, but it has alot of high volume noise, that yours doesnt seem to have, mine might be jacked up.
Any ideas on how to fix something like that?
Noise gate switch on the left.
dio this video good to play rock music (like red hot chili peppers, hendrix, rage against the machine) ?
What is the overdrive in the left?
what kind of amp you have?
@derian967 Xtotic BB preamp
hey bro, this pedal made in where?
@intheblues Yeh, everyone should have at least one Distortion pedal :)
@voiceofreason79 i have a quastion i want to buy it : what u say YES or NO :) ? pls help
Love this pedal ! But kind of frail. Drop it a few times and your luck WILL run out!
I remember the springs holding up the pedal flap breaking right away, sounded good though.
So will your nuts

I use it with a Strat single coils playing songs from Pretty Reckless. i believe mind got the earlier Chip I got lucky it serves me well!!!
Dude. The sound of the string is in the mic.
😂😂😂
*kicks pedal* "wow! Lets turn it down"
-said no guitarist, ever. :D
3 композиция какая?
Take off the Reverb, then it's actually clean
Sounds ok..
@uiterniels boss Ds1 is nice for punk =)
I just rediscovered mine im a pile of junk in the basement....made me realize how much bass i usually cut out of my sound haha this pedal can add instant balls lol

BEES IN A CAN RUN FOR YOUR LIVES
Need a better mic
@uiterniels Sm7
Very bad sound. I was embarrassed in my rehearsal with that mosquito dirty noise. I returned it immediately and got a good old Boss dual overdrive.
The blues player from hell.... They should ban this box from the blues clubs. It could change the meaning of the genre. Yeah!
they are ugly as fuck though. I had the flanger/chorus and traded it for a danelectro chorus.......facepalm dohhhh
+CORY HAYNES I have both and love them. That is, the Danelctro Cool Cat Chorus and the Ibanez Smashbox. I also have the Box of Rock which is amazing!
@Mystro810 yes the void switch can be used as a gate for your entire board.
