Hot take, but Empty Wake might be my favorite segment of this one. Simple story, one location, unsettling funeral music, terrifying monster. Also, taking place during a tornado makes it even scarier
I spat my coffee out when Ryan said it was arguably the weakest. To me it's one of the strongest of the entire VHS franchise. I found it pretty scary too!
@@timatkins2228agreed. I think the last segment was the weakest. The one with the white nationalists using vampire blood as a weapon. It just dragged on too long.
Yay other people who loved "Empty Wake" too! It was my favorite as well, 100%. I thought it was so classically creepy and I was very much on edge while watching it. But I do think Ryan's opinion on it is probably very popular, as I know a couple people who saw this and also didn't care for that segment, and I've seen several other TH-camrs also say they thought it was the weakest one. Ha I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved it!
10:43 Stephen King couldn’t have “lifted” the idea for Cell from The Signal, his novel was published in February of 2006 (it was also optioned for a film almost immediately) before The Signal had even started filming. The VHS franchise had even used the idea prior to Bruckner’s involvement, in Viral’s frame story it was heavily implied the madness and chaos consuming Los Angeles was being spread through internet videos.
You're right in this case. However, Stephen King 'lifts' quite a bit. From Pet Sematary basically being a retelling of The Monkey's Paw to a pivotal scene in Dead Zone being lifted almost completely intact from The Night has a Thousand Eyes.
So the cynical answer is that whenever any company spams sponsoring all across TH-cam (which vessi does (also see raycon, nordvpn, just about every supplement,...)) without any link to what the video is actually about, it usually means that their company is trash to mid tier quality at best. They just compensate through aggressive, constant marketing. An easy way to check this is to google that company's name and 'reddit' for actual reviews and discussion. Honestly I have mixed feelings about it. One one hand I want these TH-camrs to get paid, on the other hand a fat yikes for shilling.
@@TheSanjay307 I've got a pair, they are pretty good, fairly durable and definitely nice they are water proof. Haven't compared to any other shoes that are waterproof though so I can't really say if the price is the most bang for your buck.
I think it's much less of Trump commentary relevant to the current time of production, but rather the 90s. There was an explosion of conspiracies, cults, militia movements and general background paranoia in America during the 1990s. The X-Files really captures the zeitgeist of the era.
Ruby Ridge, Waco, Oklahoma City, the first Twin Tower attack. The conservative conspiracy theory culture was alive and well and exploding in the 90’s thanks to the goings on. It’s a side of things not everyone remembers thanks to the likes of Seinfeld and Friends tainting our collective memories of the time.
VHS is a fascinating franchise. 1 & 2 were really solid then Viral happened and killed the momentum of the series dead in its tracks. Then…the revival series of 94, 99, 85 was a shot of adrenaline that it needed. Great Vid Ryan!
The ending of the first segment, where the anchor smiles and says "Hail Raatma" felt like a bizarre Tim and Eric Skit. Honestly this is my favorite VHS so far. I have some big issues with found footage, although it's mostly the fault of movies not doing the genre properly. The movies rarely justify why someone is filming 100% of the time even when it makes literally no sense, the camera man somehow manages to perfectly frame things cinematically even when unaware of the lurking danger or while running or fighting for his life, and finally (this is actually an issue I have with the genre itself), is that there is usually absolutely 0 attempts to justify how we're watching this supposed "found footage" that contains people getting murdered for real in a cinema/on Netflix. This series is one of the few I can think of that actually does justify these things (at least mostly).
VHS 94 really blew me away because I watched it at the tail end of a binge streak of REALLY mediocre horror and I had pretty low expectations going into it. I was really impressed by how much of the settings they managed to convey without ever having to focus on anything but the main context of scene, honestly one of my favourite films of recent memory.
The only major weak spot for me in VHS 94 is the frame story’s ending, it’s the kind of illogical, unsatisfying “surprise twist” that lazy horror (and mystery) fiction loves using as a crutch. My only other real gripe (and it’s minor) is something you pointed out, the core theme (as much as it has one) feels a lot more late 2010s than mid ‘90s. Especially in “Terror,” the militia’s rhetoric was more in line with modern day MAGA chuds than ‘90s anti-government extremists. I cannot be the only one who think viral is over hated af. Parallel monsters is top tier and the connecting segment was entertaining and really funny. I don’t understand why it’s soooo hated. Yeah it’s no the best one, but it’s not terrible.
I know this is an older movie, but would you ever consider covering Antiviral (2012)? Not enough people have seen it, and I feel you'd appreciate the body horror.
I love the V/H/S movies apart from V/H/S 3 but all the others I love with a passion. I've always loved found footage films even the cheesy ones but if I'm ever bored, I put on V/H/S because most of the segments are scary in their own right. Love your videos, can't wait for more 👍🏻
As someone who is too much of a scaredy cat to watch horror movies first hand, videos like these are always a treat. The woman's initials being "S.A." feels so tragically intentional, though. The violation of her body feels akin to s*xual as*ault
The first time I saw Terror, I thought the militia was in a time loop, rather than the vampire regenerating. At the time, I was consuming media where time loops were more probable
Love your videos Ryan! Here’s some movies you should cover: - Lords of Salem (dir. Rob Zombie) - Drag Me To Hell (dir. Sam Rami) - Day Shift (dir. JJ Perry)
Man I've seen a lot of TH-camrs get rid of their facial hair but I think Ryan here is the only one I've seen that actually looks like a completely different person
The first time I watched this movie I genuinely came out of it feeling like I'd just gone through a super fun haunted house. Like. I told my brother, who showed it to me, that I felt like we'd just gone on a fair ride and that I wanted to ride it again. I had SO much fun. This movie is such a fun time, honestly, like. I highly suggest it to anybody who likes horror. It's just a blast, spooky and fun and it has some really unique ideas going on and manages to catch you off guard on multiple occasions.
This is my absolute favourite of the VHS movies. So much goodness, original perspectives and stories and just good old fun. Ryan, are you aware of the 'found footage'-style novels that are appearing these days? I'm a reviewer and they're just as good as the movies!
I love the V/H/S series -- even the so-so entries, if I'm honest. Really, any anthology horror film is A+ in my book, I just love super-short-form horror, and I was really happy to hear your take on '94. Great work!
My personal experience with 1994 was pretty fucking gnarly. That was the year I graduated High School & subsequently found myself in US Army Infantry Basic Training 5 days later...
Anna Hopkins plays Holly, and also played the reporter, Monica Stuart, on The Expanse. I thought she looked familiar. Haven't seen this one yet. thanks for the break down.
As someone who felt the all the prior VHS installments overall were either pretty meh, or downright forgettable, 94' absolutely blew me away. I came in with very low expectations, and was genuinely surprised how every segment was a total banger. Was really glad to see you cover this one.
The varying quality of the individual sketches of the first few movies causes the films to all blend together for me (without googling it, I'm not even 100% sure if I've seen the third one) and a lot of the less memorable sketches fall by the wayside of my memory, but I remember all the sketches from VHS 94. Maybe it's recency bias, but I feel like that still counts for something.
The problem I have with VHS 94, like all the other VHS films, is that the fact it's all vignettes and lacks any strong overall vision or directorial intention, thus causing the frame narrative to never really wrap around to anything. I was hopeful with 94 that, with the swat-cult frame and the first two shorts, there would be some broader narrative the actually diegetically connected them. This hope was gone by the Subject short
I’ve used your code, and I bought vessies, as a frequent viewer and contributed please put a time stamp right after your totally genuine ad I hear every. Single. Time.
I love some of these films. There are some shorts that are so iconic I still remember them years on. The cult from VHS2 and the funeral wake in 94 was so good.
I appreciate your love for Terror but the topical aspects of its story seem so distracting and obvious that it detracts from the really cool vampire ideas it has.
I think you would really enjoy Petscop and Valle Verde. These are both YT series that use fictional video games from the ‘90s as a medium to tell a horror story. This isn’t a request for a video, just a genuine recommendation to a horror fan.
ok so one thing, that last segment with the militia, doesn't seem to have anything to do with trump, i get why you'd say that given the politics which pop up in american debates all the time, but you might be too young, and european to remember this, but during the nineties and late eighties their was a massive rise in militia groups, aryan type groups, and others who felt they where fighting for change or some other stuff, also the IRA gets used a LOT in eighties and nineties media, so much so theirs a specific episode dedicated to it in highlander the series, as well as a couple eps about it in walker texas ranger, so all in all i think it starts off being like that and about some group who is portrayed as crazy until you realise their probably killing vampires and literally trying to stop the spreading of a disease, or sickness, which is actually a pretty neat twist
Love VHS 94! I'd say it's probably my favourite in the entire franchise, even more than the first one. Storm Drain and The Subject in particular are absolutely fantastic...
I was concerned that, with the previous posts we have seen from Ryan, that he was going to be quitting or at least slowing down on here. I'm glad the uploads are still coming and Ryan seems to be doing really well for himself. Keep it coming man, love your content!
VHS franchise has always interested me due to its premise of anthology Found footage. Sadly, majority of the stories and segments are very lackluster; while the great ones you wish had more time cook and flush out aspects. Overall, it is a good small franchise to exist and has seen many creators go on to do awesome things. Just wish it wasn’t treated as a stepping stone, and given more respect to flower as its own crazy series.
This was definitely the best VHS. I especially loved The Subject by Timo Tjahjanto. It got me into that directors films and he's great. It's brutal but also kind of silly. I feel like you're definitely not supposed to take the VHS series completely seriously, especially the part later when the one cop says "we don't need more tech, we need a GRAAAAAAVE digger!" I laughed so hard at that reading, and was convinced it was at least somewhat a black comedy.
It's honestly a bummer that V/H/S/94 is so good and the rest of the series ranges from "ok" to "terrible." I was optimistic about 99 and 85 but with the exception of the riot grrrl zombies entry from 99 they were huge disappointments. At this point I'm pretty sure 94 will remain the only highlight in the VHS series, which sucks because I like the conceit of the franchise.
The film making reference to militia groups, doomsday cults and societal paranoia isn't a commentary on "Trump's presidency", it's what literally happened in the Bush/Clinton era of the early 90s. See the militia group scare and subsequent gun control measures, Waco/Ruby Ridge, and popular fiction like The X-Files. Not everything is about Trump.
@markjackson3531 you need to do some research, your speech isn't as free as you think it is. And that right to defend yourself is also why so many of your school children are needlessly massacred on a regular basis.
I love the concept of the subject seeing as sa's point of view is really cool and her looking into the mirror is such a terrifying scene, kinda reminds me of the iron man, or the human centipede. Seeing what the turned Into is horrifying.

I cannot be the only one who think viral is over hated af. Parallel monsters is top tier and the connecting segment was entertaining and really funny. I don’t understand why it’s soooo hated. Yeah it’s no the best one, but it’s not terrible.
Same here. The connective through line was still better than the toy soldier nonsense
I know this is an older movie, but would you ever consider covering Antiviral (2012)? Not enough people have seen it, and I feel you'd appreciate the body horror.
Absolutely love it. Glad to know someone appreciates it.
For me, the cult segment in VHS 2 was still one of if not the best of all the movies
I love the V/H/S movies apart from V/H/S 3 but all the others I love with a passion. I've always loved found footage films even the cheesy ones but if I'm ever bored, I put on V/H/S because most of the segments are scary in their own right. Love your videos, can't wait for more 👍🏻
The Raatma makes me giggle cause i saw a clip from behind the scene where Raatma is dancing and someone behind the scenes yells "i love you raatma!" 😂
I watched this movie for the first time on a whim this morning, so the synchronicity here was a shocking surprise.
Love your videos Ryan! Here’s some movies you should cover:
- Lords of Salem (dir. Rob Zombie)
- Drag Me To Hell (dir. Sam Rami)
- Day Shift (dir. JJ Perry)
I remember when the very first V/H/S came out and FREAKED me out. Good to see it return to form in this rendition. Thanks for the awesome video!
45 seconds in with no “Hoyever” you fell off 😔
no fr
The Subject was absolutely my favorite segment. Felt like early 2000s Japanese body horror. it was fantastically done, even with the bad CGI.
This is not only the best VHS in the series but it’s one of my favorite found footage movies period.
2:34 You can't fool me AI Ryan Hollinger.
Horror is the best genre and found footage is one of the best sub genres of horror. amazing video and content as usual.
Great work!
The Signal will always be one of my favorite horror anthologies. Good on ya for shouting it out.
My personal experience with 1994 was pretty fucking gnarly.
That was the year I graduated High School & subsequently found myself in US Army Infantry Basic Training 5 days later...
Perfect video to watch after work! Hope all are doing well! Another awesome video, Ryan 😁👍
Yesterday Foundflix covered VHS and today's Ryan uploaded a review as well, what a time to be alive
Man, watching the empty wake reminded me of that one episode of Hill House that is a continuous shot. The setting is really similar.
Damn, Ryan cleaned up real good
The varying quality of the individual sketches of the first few movies causes the films to all blend together for me (without googling it, I'm not even 100% sure if I've seen the third one) and a lot of the less memorable sketches fall by the wayside of my memory, but I remember all the sketches from VHS 94. Maybe it's recency bias, but I feel like that still counts for something.
I love that we are getting another Go for the VHS saga, another 10 year and we will have a 3 trilogy movie set
I was born in 95 and I gotta agree the 90’s had some good shit as far as horror is concerned
that last short was truly genius, it earned the double hoyever
I’ve used your code, and I bought vessies, as a frequent viewer and contributed please put a time stamp right after your totally genuine ad I hear every. Single. Time.
The best subgenre hands down. I've always thought that and always felt like I needed to hide that thought from the world. Thank you.
I love some of these films. There are some shorts that are so iconic I still remember them years on.
The cult from VHS2 and the funeral wake in 94 was so good.
Most of them only have 1, maybe 2 segments I enjoy but somehow that's enough to keep me coming back.
I appreciate your love for Terror but the topical aspects of its story seem so distracting and obvious that it detracts from the really cool vampire ideas it has.
It's about a subtle as a brick to the head, yes
Yeah! That scene with the survivalists and the vampire was great
I think you would really enjoy Petscop and Valle Verde.
Storm Drain and The Subject in particular are absolutely fantastic...
one of my favourite series of films EVER, always a fun watch (besides from viral but we can forget that exists)
thank you so much for this video!
Can’t believe you haven’t covered Gonjiam Asylum yet.
I adore these movies. Hope they never stop making them.
94 is great, this and the OG make an awesome mini marathon.
I was concerned that, with the previous posts we have seen from Ryan, that he was going to be quitting or at least slowing down on here. I'm glad the uploads are still coming and Ryan seems to be doing really well for himself. Keep it coming man, love your content!
I appreciated the brillant and different direction they went with a vampire storyline
It was glorious!

My goodness!
This movie got us a "Hoyever, hoyever"!
Hoyever squared!
In alternative universe we have a horror movie series called "beta max "
Shout-out to Ryan for coverings movies we never would've heard about otherwise 📣
Cover a video on the 2005 film “The Skeleton Key” starring Kate Hudson! Very underrated
Has Ryan talked at all about when the "however" bit turned from an unintentional writing to intentional?
He still hasn’t used it as a code for 10% off
This was definitely the best VHS.
This franchise is up there for my favorite horror ones. This movie might be up there for my favorite horror movies of All time.
2:46 Distinct Nightmarish Nuggets was my favorite breakfast cereal as a kid.
The next film you should do is Come and See (directed by Elem Klimov in 1985). A harrowing and disturbing Russian anti-war film.
Psychological thrillers are the best sub-genre, not found footage, but I appreciate found footage as well.
I'm so happy someone finally said this
Europeans trying to have nuanced opinions on America, to the usual results.
@@robt6425 Yeah because it's so much better when it happens in reverse right? typical Yank response.
@@jelstone20 Hey, at least WE still have free speech and the right to defend ourselves! you guys are DEEP in the shlt
Me and my dad watched this on Shudder completely blind. We or at least I knew of the series by reputation, it did NOT disappoint
