Welcome to Malaysia! I just come from anot vlog Pure Detox and they made a food tour video in Ipoh. You can check their videos and try some of the food they had. There's also some comments there that recommend more places to eat in Ipoh that you can check out. If you're more interested in food lol I'm not qualified to talk about nature or historical sites there since I'm from the southern state 😄
Have to warn you in advance DO NOT TRAVEL 1-2 days before and until CNY, the traffic jammed would probably be crazier in major highways 😅

Cantonese is the more popular dialect in KL but mandarin would be more commonly known throughout Malaysia. Welcome to Malaysia. Hope you explore the island to the east too. Anything can be bargained in Petaling Street, even ice cream. LoL.
I heard the 磨剪刀，磨菜刀in Hokkian when I was young. Cantonese is commonly spoken in KL.

You should try Malay mix rice at Restoran Sambal Hijau, at Kampung Sungai Penchala, near KL for lunch. Every dish is fantastic. Ready for party in your mouth.😋😋
Oh yaaay, i am literally just packing for my flight to KL, gonna be there by tomorrow. Love the city, enjoy ♡ one of my fav restaurant is tarma iraqi street food, their appetizers are to die for, the shawarma sandwiches at Halab gate shawarma is great too (they sell on the street corner, you cannot sit down but worth it), and in Pavilion at matcha hero at the tokyo level is one of the best matcha latte I ever tried ❤
Love Malaysia and been to KL 10 times. Never bothered with the Petronas towers till, 2019. Touristy, but loved it.

Welcome to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! On your way to Penang, do drop by to Genting Highland (it's pretty cold here), Cameron Highland, Frazer Hill and Ipoh. If you love beaches, then you should go to Pangkor Island, Langkawi Island, Perhentian Island and Redang Island (this is in the east coast of Malaysia).

Yes people in Malaysia can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese.. mostly the Chinese can speak Cantonese. So either is fine. BTW Note’s pronunciation for Mee Rebus is very accurate. 👍 yes durians in Malaysia is better than Thai durians for sure! Oh I miss Malaysia… I should make a trip down soon.
Next time he can go order Mee Rebus for me...definitely having it again before we leave Malaysia. We love Thai durian so I wonder if we'll find Malaysian durian better or too strong for us... have to try to find out!

Yes, only durian is better than Thailand and nothing else, everything else is better in Thailand. Chinese are a minority in Malaysia, not true that many people in Malaysia can speak Chinese.

Welcome and enjoy your stay in Malaysia. Don't be afraid to ask if you have questions or are unsure about anything. Malaysians are a friendly lot as you would have discovered by now.
Things to eat:
1- ROTI CANAI (pronounced cha-nai)
2- nasi kerabu (Malay)
3- nasi dagang (Malay)
4- Ramly Burger (street stalls. not to be missed)
5- hainanese chicken rice
6- Hokien mee (Chinese)
7- char kueh teow (Penang state has the best, but you can find one or two good ones in other states. There's the wet version and the dry version. The dry - Chinese, the wet - malay)
8- cendol dessert
9- Teh Tarik (pull tea. Can be found in mamak or indian Muslim coffeeshops or Malay food outlets).
10- apam balik (There's the thick version and the thing crispy version)
11- Bah Ku Teh (literally meaning pork tea. You got to ask the Chinese people where to get it. The ones in the town of Klang are said to be good.)
12- a variety of tropical Malaysian fruits starting with the infamous durian (you either hate or or u love it. But it can grow on you if taken from time to time)
13- Banana leaf rice (indian)
14- tosai, capati, roti tissue (indian)
15- Pisang goreng (banana fritters)
16- indian, Chinese n Malay deserts.
17- laksa. You have Malay and Peranakan versions. The one in the state of Sarawak called Laksa Sarawak was highly rated by Anthony Bourdain. He called it the "breakfast of gods".
Places to visit near or in KL:
1- Batu Caves (30 minutes outside KL
2- Eco Park (jungle in KL with tree top walkways and jungle trails)
3- Bukit Bintang and Jalan Alor food street
4-Genting Highlands (entertainment city in the sky just about an hour outside KL by road. attractions include cable car, theme park, hotels, cool tempretures and casino)
5- central market (to hunt for souvenirs)
6- petaling Street (chinatown for fake goods. bargain like crazy for everything. Start at 15% initial offer)
7- all the shopping centres to keep cool on hot days. Notables Low Yat Plaza (computers, gadgets, hi tech stuff), pavilion (branded stuff), Berjaya time square (indoor theme park n rollercoaster), One Utama (the biggest in south east asia, I think) and the brand new Lalaport
8- Night merkets. The well known ones are Taman Connaught NM and the Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman NM.
Outside KL:
1- Langkawi island (duty free. Booze dirt cheap)
2- Historical city of Melaka with it's Portuguese, Dutch and English influences.
3- Penang (Malaysia's food capital)
4- Perhentian islands
5- Malay heartland states in the east coast - Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang
6- Johore Baru
7- towns in the state of perak . Notably Ipoh and Taiping.

In Malaysia, the Chinese dialect "officially" use is Mandarin because that is the dialect used in the Chinese based schools. However, Malaysian Chinese still use various dialects for everyday use. It depends on the area actually. Central Malaysia, is predominantly Cantonese speaking, and Hokkien is used predominantly in Penang. Other states uses Mandarin, smattering of Hakka, Teochew. I don't know if this helps. But basically the two main dialects used in Malaysia is mandarin and Cantonese.

Taiping there is the hidden Austin Pool which is much nicer and cleaner than the more well known Burmese Pool. Taking a dip in the waters is refreshing.
Finally you are in Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia.Try to spend some time in Ipoh before you go to Penang.Ipoh have some good food available there.

Welcome to my country Malaysia 😅. If you drive all the way from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, make sure stopover to my hometown, Ipoh. Plenty of nice food awaits you. Specially for you, Flora..most Chinese in Kuala Lumpur speak Cantonese. Ipoh city too 90% of the Chinese in Ipoh speak Cantonese. Of course Mandarin is widely acceptable in all of Malaysia cities. Sawatdeekrup! Finally you guys made it to Malaysia, a country I call home, after Phuket. Kuala Lumpur (pronounced Loom-Poor) is really a big city(and quite congested too haha) yet it has greenery spots scattered around the city. Do avoid the city centre whenever it rains heavily as it is pretty prone to flash floods. China Town or better known as Petaling Street offers you both the new and old and you really need to walk. Cantonese is widely spoken in Kuala Lumpur so you are in good hands. Chow Kit, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman is also one of the older areas in Kuala Lumpur and for more greenery, can visit Taman Tasik Perdana, Titiwangsa, Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, just to name a few. Hope Malaysia gives you new adventures and stay safe!
You should try Malaysian durian since its in season. Malaysian durian is different from Thai durian. We let the durian ripen naturally and fall by themselves so the taste and flavour is stronger than Thai durian. You should try the different varieties of durian like XO, D24, Black thorn, Red Prawn, Musang King, kampong durian and many many more.
Flora/Note, while in KL, you must do a walking tour of River of Life and visit Kuala Lumpur City Gallery! Also walk to Perdana Botanical Garden. The park is HUGE!
Why don't you two spend a day or two in the southern part, Malacca, a 2-hour journey from Kuala Lumpur, another historic city where the history of the Malaysian Sultanate began. Like Penang Melaka has been declared as a Unesco heritage city. In addition to the traces of Portuguese, Dutch and English remains, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday there is the legendary Jonker Street night market, where there is a variety of street food that is often praised by vloggers like you. However, if two of you are heading to Penang, you can also stop by the city of Taiping, which was the capital of Malaysia before independence, which used to be called Malaya before Bristih's administrative capital was moved to Kuala Lumpur.

@@jomontanee There are many express buses to Melaka because it is a historic city. Especially from Kuala Lumpur there are various bus companies. In addition, there is a taxi service from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka. While in Melaka city, in addition to the public bus service, you can also use the grab service. It is quite strange that the 4th most developed city in Malaysia has no transport services.
In KL they mostly speak cantonese, in Ipoh they also speak cantonese, in penang the mostly speak hokkien. Mandarin is universal
The PNB118 is not a cheat. One can actually go up to the thinnest part of the spire as it will, once completed become the world's highest viewing platform. Therefore the entire height is real!

Warm welcome to both of you. The weather is humid and its sunny during morning and afternoon. Raining at late evening. Weather easily changes to rainy in the north peninsula, Penang and Langkawi Island. At Ipoh, you can drive up to Cameron Highlands of Pahang about an hour drive. You can enjoy the cool breeze of CH. So much to do there and you can Google it. Hope you enjoy your time here in Malaysia.
Please try to visit Langkawi from Penang by Ferry Boat which is calm & quiet with less crowd mostly. Also try to visit Johor Bahru City which is opposite to Singapore and by bus from KL you can reach there within 4-5hrs. Remember their slogan Malaysia is Truly Asia
Something most travel bloggers (and even Malaysians!) never experience is a thriving surf scene on the east coast in Cherating. Lots of great cafes and traditional businesses to visit as well

You've done Petaling Street mostly chinese area, explore Batu caves & little India and try their dish like roti Canai and famous drinks Teh tarik (pulled tea). For Malay, try explore Kampung Baru, is the last Malay village in the heart of KL, you can try Nasi Lemak Wanjo and there is a new pedestrian bridge that link Kampung Baru and KLCC with colourful light in the night. Since you have car, you can also explore Putrajaya. Try google for the place mentioned, for more information. Please take note that this weekend, the Highway probably will be congested due to long holiday for Chinese New Year, always be update with the traffic news! Happy exploring guys!
It really depends on where you are in Malaysia, the main Chinese dialects changes. In Kuala Lumpur & Ipoh, mostly speaks Cantonese and while you move further 30 km to Klang, people speaks Hokkien like in Penang. But, Mandarin are used in nearly everywhere in Malaysia.

There are more Chinese who understand Cantonese than Mandarin in the capital Kuala Lumpur given the state Malay-English education, popularity of TVB/Shaw Brothers dramas over the decades here and the fact that Cantonese has been used as the lingua franca for immigrants from Southern China (especially Guangdong) since the 18th century. I know many Hakka or other dialects families who used only Cantonese at home. But Mandarin or Hokkien usage is more prevalent in some rural areas. 😂

@Xarifa Lee Differentiate not "different shed". Why do we need to differentiate? Mandarin is a common language for Chinese people of different ethnicities in China, Taiwan and Singapore and also Malaysia in official Chinese events. Why don't you "differentiate" yourself from Englishmen by not using English? Language is to facilitate communication between people. As long as the speaker and the listener understand the same language, then that language can be used.

After u have done KL - go to Kuala Selangor - Sekinchan -Teluk Intan - Setiawan - Pantai Remis-Ipoh -Taiping -Kuala Sepatang-Kuala Kurau -Bukit Mertajam-Butterworth and finally to Georgetown
People can communicate cantonese in KL/Ipoh - if they cant speak they definitely can understand .In penang people tend to speak mandarin

actually, you can always try cantonese first to test the water. if they prefer mandarin, they will reply in mandarin or any other language. no worry and dont be shy. malaysian wont scold ppl for not speaking in a specific language.. well, most wont.. 😁

Since you've been to Penang, I'm sure you tried Peranakan food before. Perak is the state that famous with their signature white coffee, chicken rice, the famous Ayam Garam Aun Kheng Lim. If you a cat person, maybe can make a visit to Cat Beach Sanctuary at Tanjung Bungah in Penang.

Let us know how this island compare to Thai's island. And please plan for a trip to hike Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in South East Asia. The view at the peak is totally out of this world. You need to get in touch with a tour agent who will arrange for the trip. The price for 2D1N hike is close to RM2K but it is definitely worth it. While in Sabah, a hike to Bohey Dulang peak is a must! Enjoy!
Ipoh is the food Mecca of the country. Almost every street has its own Hawker style cuisine, and it's affordable!!

On the way to Penang you can stop by Lata Kinjang, the highest waterfall in Malaysia, Gua Tempurung (Tempurung caves) and the supposedly haunted. Kellie Castle. Quite less touristy. Hav fun then vlog. in that order

Sitiawan and Manjung is great especially Sitiawan old town where the food is great. There's Lumut with it's beach. Also can go to Pangkor Island where its just chill with its beautiful beaches.
is it KL118 cheated due to very tall spire to make sure their get the title of 2nd tallest tower in the world? the answer is yes and no because actually after the construction fully finished as a tourist u can climb inside the spire to look at 360 view of KL at the highest point, basically the spire its not just cosmetic purpose only haha

RexKL - At Chinatown KL, on Jalan Sultan which is the road parallel to Petaling Street, there is the old cinema building called RexKL. It has been repurposed to contain some eateries on the lower ground level and upstairs you have the main tenant BookXcess (book shop) which has been designed to fit within the space of the old cinema. The architects kept most of the old building intact. Imagine huge book shelves built on multi levels of steps where the old cinema seats used to be. Sometimes there are art exhibitions held there as well.
In Ipoh, this same BookXcess bookshop has a small branch in the Kong Heng restaurant area in Ipoh Old Town. It is housed in an old bank. It is interesting to go down to the basement level because the bank vault used to be there and they've kept the vault doors and the safe deposit boxes around. There is also a tiny little museum dedicated to the late Yasmin Ahmad, a advertising creative director turned movie director. Would be nice to just pop in if you are already in the area.

Cantonese is mother tongue for some Chinese Malaysian. Mandarin is learned in school.
Selamat datang ke malaysia (welcome to malaysia) ! We can speak both cantonese and mandarin but very much depending which state you are visiting. Example : kuala lumpur, perak and pahang speak cantonese more while johor, penang and malacca speak mandarin....

Before entering the Penang island, there is another town located in Penang state too that you must never miss, Bukit Mertajam. There are many good food in Bukit Mertajam which have just been recommended by Michelin lately such as duck egg fried kuoy tiao, BM old town yam rice, old town black and white man rojak (黑白人）, 丽光薄饼，广西Hokkien Mee，樺师傅福建干， White Wanton Mee. Also not to miss out Autocity night market and Icon City in Bukit Mertajam
I'm a Singaporean. And I have to say that Malaysian Chinese food is really on another level. I enjoy the plenty of pork lard and flavourful sauces that they use in some food as well as certain ingredients that are already prohibited in Singapore i.e. pig's blood curd.
Singapore food is way too healthy already. Haha. We cut down alot on oil, salt and sugar.
Apology that I can't comment on the authentic Malaysia Muslim or Indian cuisines as I never try them at all when I was in the different states in Malaysia. But I can vouch that Malaysian Chinese food is simply amazing!

Since you are driving to Penang,make a stop in Taiping to visit the famous lake garden.etc.Mandarin usually spoken by younger people.Cantonese are also widely spoken in K.Lumpur and Ipoh.Penang Chinese usually speak Hokkien.
