Thank you for this. "When I'm Dead and Gone" is about the great Blues artist Robert Johnson. "Malt and Barley Blues" was the second single and made it to the top 5 in the UK, I believe.
I was very young at that time, but I also have a memory of hearing "Happy Birthday Ruthy Baby' from the album and didn't know it was them until a few years ago.
After Gallagher and Lyle left, MF were never the same. Not only were they the main songwriters and singers, they were also multi-instrumentalists. I think it's Graham Lyle who's playing the mandolin.
Dennis Coulson was a lead singer with MF (with Gallagher and Lyle) and has his self titled solo album released in 1973 and is quite well regarded, but now sadly forgotten.
MF/Manfred Mann still tour and include these songs in their live act.
G and L played with Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance and released quite a few albums before succeeding with "Breakaway"(they were on the verge of bankruptcy before then).

I loved this LP when it was new, and I still do. It's an excellent debut.
A year or two earlier, I loved Mary Hopkin's cover of Gallagher & Lyle's "Sparrow", not knowing who they were. I was delighted and surprised to find it on their second LP, "Happy Birthday, Ruthy Baby".

Love McGuiness/ Flint. Just saw The Manfreds two weeks ago with Paul Jones who is marvellous for his age. 82 I believe and Tom McGuiness. Fantastic night
