After watching your video I was introduced to the different bullet journals and I fell in love with the tekukor 160gsm journal. It's the journal I'll be using for 2020, thank you so much for sharing your content it has been really helpful.
@@808bart yes I do and I know exactly what u mean. I can't place it down on just any surface or else it gets really dirty, and it's hard to rub off. It's a good thing that's the only bad thing about it
I started using the Michael's brand grid journal last year, with nominally 80gsm paper, and loved it. This year, I spent the same amount on the Michael's "level 2" dot journal, with also "80gsm" paper that seems much heavier, and I'm loving it even more! It's 180 pages, so it should be able to handle at least half of my year without complaint.
Thanks for letting me know about your input on the Exceed via your blog spot. I took my son today and he bought the medium dotted in black cover. He’s loving it.
I use the Hobby Lobby journal for my work bujo, and I have another saved for my 2021 journal. They're great for an inexpensive, but good quality option! But I still prefer the Archer and Olive, in spite of the price. Can't go wrong with either.
I also highly suggest the Ottergami 150gsm one! I just got it and it's absolutely amazing. The paper is sturdy and smooth to write and draw on. I really love it.
@@kathyhackney7950 it is off white and it’s quite lovely. I’ve used watercolour once in it - it’s fine if you don’t need to write on the other side but it does buckle quite a lot. Personally I wouldn’t watercolour in it again, but it holds up well with felt tips :)
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm located in the USA so I don't have easy access to journals in other countries. But thank you for mentioning the brand here for others who might be able to get their hands on that journal.
Galaxy Jade it’s a dotted notebook. Thick pages and they have 5 or 6 colours. They don’t always have them in. But if you don’t see ask them may have some not put out yet. They are called bullet journals too
I love this journal, I used one for a year and had no ghosting even with pro markers and it survived being taken everywhere and having tons of loose papers shoved into it. I treated myself to a lt1917 and it’s just not as good, ghosting with every pen I use, it has numbered pages, but that’s not enough. I’m currently using a tsuki nighttime by notebook therapy because I’ve moved on to using watercolours in my journals, but I still look out for a new tiger book when I’m in the shop

Hi! I really love your in depth review of all the journals! I was actually going to make Tekukor my next journal purchase as I was really looking for a good 160 gsm not so pricey option and your review of the Tekukor journals in general really hyped me up! However, I wondered if you've seen the reviews on Amazon about the pages not lining up? The dot grids from page to page are uneven in several instances, and there several people complaining about this unfortunate quality control issue. Just wondered if you were aware of this and if it would change your review of this product at all? It made me very sad because I was ready to pull the trigger on the green lotus leaf journal :-(
Are the dots misaligned every 4-6 pages on your Tekukor 160 gsm notebook? I bought one and returned it because of that only to realize my replacement archer and olive journal has misaligned dots every 4 pages also. Drives me crazy!
Very informative video, thank you! This made me really gravitate towards the Tekukor 160gsm journal. But the navy blue is not sold on amazon anymore. Do you of a place or website that still sells it in the navy blue color?
Mmm... it looks like the blue one is sold out. I'm sure they're going to restock. But have you checked out the other colors? They have a burgundy and an olive version. Here's the link to the burgundy that is my second favorite of the 160gsm options: amzn.to/2FUQWI8
Hello, I really enjoy your reviews. I've been using the Exceed journal for the past two years based on your review and love them. I'm considering a larger journal. I'm likely one of the few people who truly enjoy the cream color pages in the Exceed. It's gentle on my eyes. Is the 160 gsm Tekukor's pages a cream color as well? It looks like its a light cream color but you did not mention. Thank you!

I just use pens like Zebra Sarasa Clip, Zebra Sarasa Dry, Pentel Energel (all 0.5mm), and the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner. Would those ghost with the 100gsm journals you showed?
Ah. You are referring to the Exceed judging by another of your comments.. So far, after heavy usage and some egregious abuse after a year, my prior notebook is holding up. I love all your videos and really want to buy a few of these lined notebooks. I am interested in keeping a diary of sorts to give to each of my children so would need it to last. Does the exceed have acid free paper? Thanks so much. Hope you are doing well.
I don't know if the Exceed notebook has acid-free paper. But most any paper made nowadays will last as long many many years... so unless you're looking to save your notebooks for 100 years or longer, that's probably not a big deal. What are you using your notebook for?
Do you have any recommendations for lined journals? I love the look of the archer and olive covers but they are sold out in lined and I have found few reviews on lined journals.
Check out my big journal review blog series. I talk about whether each brand of journal has lined, dotted, grid or blank pages. www.stationerynerd.com/journals
As much as I love Citrus Book Bindery and the beautiful work they do with their journals, they are actually not in this class of notebooks. They produce handmade artisan journals and their prices reflect that type of product. The list of recommended journals in this video are part of the mass-produced, manufactured class of notebooks and it wouldn't be a fair comparison to put the two different types of products on the same list. Yes, I understand that Citrus Book Bindery now has a mass-produced journal in their lineup, but that's not something I've tried yet so I can't give an honest opinion on that journal.
I know this is old and you're probably not responding to comments anymore but I'm going to ask anyways. I'm looking for the perfect journal for me. Which is, 160 gsm with yellow pages or cream pages or off white pages at least. I can't seem to find anything that isn't stark white 😕. Any recs?
I can't think of a brand off the top of my head that has 160gsm with cream paper. However, might I suggest you come over and find the Facebook Group called The Stationery Nerd Herd. We've got 21,000 members so someone will likely have so e suggestions for you.
I wish for reviews of very big notebooks, like the composition size or larger. I have very big handwriting and the a5 size is not very good for me, and it seems like b5 or larger size journals aren't really plentiful. I keep wanting a master leuchturm but I don't want to pay $35 having only seen one halfway decent review on it.
This is on my list of reviews to do. My favorite B5 hard cover journal is the Minimalism Art Premium Edition. Or if you want soft cover, you could go with the Exceed journal at Walmart with the 100gsm paper. I've just started compiling my research on the larger journal sizes, so it might be a bit before a video comes out, but I promise that I'm working on it. ♥
@@StationeryNerd I'm glad to know you already got this on your to do list. Actually, I saw your exceed video and bought the dotted 100 gsm composition size one this past December. I love the size of it, and the paper quality is just right for what I do, which is nothing fancy at all. You did a good job helping exceed to improve on their notebooks. But the softcover book I have is tearing and the elastic strap popped out. I never had an official journal before so I'm probably overusing it because it's a novelty to me. I will have to try that Minimalism art premium one you said up above, (thank you for that recommendation) because I think a hardcover will stand up better to my abuse. As for your research, I hope this info below helps out, or that you didn't already find this and I'm typing it for laughs ;) I found... "leuchturn master slim" and the "leuchturn master" both which are bigger than a4 size. The master slim has far less paper and is softcover and costs a little bit less than the plain master which costs $35. And the master has more paper and is a hardcover. I saw that the Master is supposed to have 100 gsm paper, but I can't figure out what weight of paper the master Slim is supposed to have. And, it's confusing to look at the amazon listings because the two names of the different notebooks are easily confused. And they all say they have 80 gsm paper, but then a video by the goulette pen company says the master-master has 100 gsm paper. There's another video; here's the title; "Leuchturm 1917 Master Size Journal Review" there's a part later in the video where you can see the back of the belly band and it says 100 gsm paper. I got too confused by all the different information without anything being certain and stopped researching it. I hope you have better luck than I had if you research these two books.
The minimalism art notebooks do come in B5 I have one myself, which is gorgeous by the way. I didn't try it yet but I'm planning on using it as my daily journal with my fountain pen. I buy Pelikan 4001 inks for my fountain pens to prevent feathering and bleed through despite the paper quality I got the information from JetPens for good fountain pen inks for all kinds of paper. Obviously the better the paper the easier to write with the fountain pen ( I use medium nibs from Parker Pens). Although I do have to agree with you that B5 size journals are hard to come by that is decent. Sometimes Walgreens have good B5 size journals in the stationary section.
Okay so I honestly need some help! I’ve been looking for a 7” x 10” bullet Journal that had 160 gsm. Dose anyone know of a journal that big with the quality paper I need ?
I'm looking for something like that too. I see the b5 size 100 or 120 gsm on Amazon a lot, but I do not see the 160 gsm in that size for Dotted notebooks. And the 120gsm b5 size ones always sell out so fast that if you see one of those and decide you want one, you'd have to just buy it right then. Minimalism art had a b5 size 120 gsm one, and scribbles that matter had a 120 b5 all sold out, but maybe they will restock them sooner or later.
I actually found this on Amazon just now. Hope you see this to copy and paste to Amazon search: B5 Dotted Journal by Scribbles That Matter - Bullet Dot Grid Notebook
I am really suprised that u are sayint that STM and Archer and Olive are not good journals. They are the best for most of the people (who prefer thicker papers) Very Hight quality
For much more detail about why those two journals are not Stationery Nerd approved, you'll want to watch the full comparison of the 160gsm journals. They truly failed the test. www.stationerynerd.com/160gsmcomparison
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. Basically the weight of the paper... which also typically translates to the thickness of the paper. As a general rule of thumb, the thickness of the paper is a good indicator as to how well it performs with most pens or markers. However, GSM is just one factor among many that determines the quality of the paper used.
You keep saying there's no ghosting or bleeding, but with what kind of pens and ink. Even the brand new Exceed journal bleed like a stuck piug with many of my fountain pens. As for gsm, seriously? When you get above 110, tyou're just throwing money out the window. It's a way manufacturers get away with using really bad paper. Just make it thicker. No ghosting and no bleeding at the cost of far fewer pagers and a much shorter lifespan. Though form my experience, none of these books have the gsm they claim. Now, I think do grid is the silliest thing on the planet, and only became popular because the right few people on TH-cam raved about it, and people are lemmings. If millions would follow Hitler, how many are suddenly going to love dot grid because someone they admire loves it? I like Brian Goulet, but when he said his favorite color was blue, suddenly the percentage of people who also love blue went through the roof, even with peope who I know hated blue before he said that. Advertisers and marketers, just like dictators, make a living of this trait ninety percent of people have. Anyway, the binding on the books is also horrible,. The Exceed biding is the worst, and will, if used too much, fall apart. In a few years, it will fall apart, even if it isn't used. But all the books have very poor binding. No problem, if you don't care about longevity, but a big problem, if you do.
I couldn't disagree more about dot-grid paper. Now, the tendency towards a darker cream colored paper, I am not a big fan of, but the dots! My god! I wish they had that when I was younger. For writing prose, I prefer college-ruled. For everything else, I used to prefer graph-ruled. No longer! Dots are where it is at. And I find this to be true for just about everyone I know that makes as much use of pen-to-paper as I do. As for bleed and ghosting. I don't use a fountain pen, but Exceed has been acceptable to me. Are there better papers out there? No doubt. But the paper is darn good. Hell, even the Walmart Pen+Gear Leatherette $7.62 notebooks I use for writing prose have excellent paper. At least, excellent enough. The world of stationary has really benefited from competition lately. Here you go, Stationery Nerd, it's cheap and great for a workhorse notebook: www.walmart.com/ip/Pen-Gear-Pg-Leatherette-Cover-Journal-Ruled-Pages/366407550 --- I use them for story development (not bullet journaling). High-quality that doesn't break the bank. And the binding is damn good as well. About 75,000 words into my current novel and the notebooks are going strong, thank you very much. ;)

I will have to try that Minimalism art premium one you said up above, (thank you for that recommendation) because I think a hardcover will stand up better to my abuse.
As for your research, I hope this info below helps out, or that you didn't already find this and I'm typing it for laughs ;)
I found...
"leuchturn master slim" and the
"leuchturn master"
both which are bigger than a4 size. The master slim has far less paper and is softcover and costs a little bit less than the plain master which costs $35. And the master has more paper and is a hardcover. I saw that the Master is supposed to have 100 gsm paper, but I can't figure out what weight of paper the master Slim is supposed to have. And, it's confusing to look at the amazon listings because the two names of the different notebooks are easily confused. And they all say they have 80 gsm paper, but then a video by the goulette pen company says the master-master has 100 gsm paper. There's another video; here's the title;
"Leuchturm 1917 Master Size Journal Review"
there's a part later in the video where you can see the back of the belly band and it says 100 gsm paper.
Hope you see this to copy and paste to Amazon search:
B5 Dotted Journal by Scribbles That Matter - Bullet Dot Grid Notebook
Winter Rain I actually got the same one
a journal about how bad my is the year 2020
Hi love, i so enjoy your videos!
I bought the exceed and was very dissapointed as it bleeds terriably!
Did you get the new version or one of the leftover old style notebooks with the old paper?
I am really suprised that u are sayint that STM and Archer and Olive are not good journals. They are the best for most of the people (who prefer thicker papers) Very Hight quality
For much more detail about why those two journals are not Stationery Nerd approved, you'll want to watch the full comparison of the 160gsm journals. They truly failed the test. www.stationerynerd.com/160gsmcomparison
Only person hear that don't know gsm ._.
Can't believe Dingbats wasn't included.
I’m 5 minutes into this video and your still talking about colours!! Gods sake lady people came here to hear about the paper variance
Hi James. With all this negativity toward journals and paper .... I'm super curious about which notebook YOU prefer. What brand do you use?
About 75,000 words into my current novel and the notebooks are going strong, thank you very much. ;)
James Ritchie I cannot find a single positive comment from you about this video. What is your recommendation for a reasonably priced dotted journal, James? I'd like an index, a back pocket, an elastic band, numbering, and 80-120gsm. Cheers.
Thanks for the review, it was very useful.
