I did too. I was 20 years old and did some work for him at his house. He gave me a tour of his studio, what a thrill. I had the good fortune of growing up 12 miles from Woodstock in the sixties and seventies.
From the 1969 album, " The Band", their 2nd album, this song draws from the band's musical roots. Written by guitarist Robbie Robertson🇨🇦 and sung by Levon Helm, the lyrics are full of wordplay and alliteration. The brillant instruments producing a delightful melody, including a breaking sound in featuring Hohner clavinet played with a wah-wah pedal, the riff heard after each chorus which was used in many 70's funk tunes. Just brilliant musicians. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Miss Blondie. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Harri will appreciate that Stevie Wonder was the first notable artist to play clavinet with a wah-wah pedal. I say notable because the idea of playing a keyboard instrument with effects pedals had been around since the mid-60s, concurrent with Jimi Hendrix's use of a wah-wah pedal on his guitar on 1967's "I Don't Live Today," followed almost immediately by Eric Clapton on Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses." It was Stevie's "Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day" in 1968 however that made it a funk essential. Of course, "Superstition" was the most famous use of the "doctored" clavinet sound.
They are all gone now. Robbie Robertson was the last living member of "The Band" and he passed about a year ago. What music they left us to remember them by. Thank you Harri for keeping the real music alive, so a younger generation can see what really good music is, as opposed to the mostly crap that passes for music today.
The drummer is Levon Helm. The thing that I think is so amazing about him isn't that he was a drummer that sings, but that he was an amazing drummer that sings. He could lay down a groove so deep your Jeep could get stuck in it. RIP.
AS a onetime drummer, in my younger days, I can tell you Harri, it's hard enough to have three different nothing's going on at one time just on the drums, let alone singing in a totally different rhythm as well. It's always Blown me away to see that. That's why it's so rare. You see some light back up singing by drummers, but almost never sing the lead. The drummer's name is Levon Helm.
They are the band that Americana as a category was invented for . Rock,Blues,Bluegrass,Cajun, Indigenous,Folk, God knows man it’s all in there. Rick Danko is probably who you’re talking about and no. Robbie Robertson main songwriter,Rick Danko, Levon Helms ( drums lead vocals) Richard Manual, Garth Hudson ( only surviving member also they used to pay him like $10. a week as a side thing because he was professionally trained and his parents hated him being in a band 😂) They backed Ronnie Hawkins as teenagers playing as professionals , then got the gig to tour with Bob Dylan when he went electric. They were such a great band they became known as THE BAND. Uniquely North American they never tried to sound like anything else . Love these men ☮️
Always been a fan of Robbie's and Levon, but lately I have really discovered Rick Danko, just watching him bouncing around is such a joy, as well as his harmony.
Levon Helm on drums was the only American, the other four band members were Canadian……not related though. Robbie wrote all their songs and he passed away several months back. The sole surviving member is Garth Hudson.
LeVon Helm is the drummer/singer. Originally from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas. He played what is called 'traditional style drums'. His kit was also unique in that it was made from wood. He played other instruments, as well. After The Band broke up he went on to act in several critically acclaimed movies such as Coal Miner's Daughter and The Right Stuff, to name a few. In the 2010's his solo albums won grammies for best Americana Album (traditional) three years in a row. He passed away in 2012. Americana is essentially an umbrella term for the various and divergent forms of folk music that have flourished in the United States and which make up what you might call the ‘sound’ of the nation. While the term tends to mean something slightly different to every listener, most Americana bleeds with the dulcet tones of the Southern United States, whether it be gospel, blues, bluegrass, or delta blues. One of the reasons Americana is so hard to define is because often encompasses rock, just as it encompasses trad jazz, country, and blues.
Live The Band! The Weight is my favorite. The singer is Levon Helm and he was in a few movies after The Last Waltz. Great storytelling in the documentary and Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson had a special edition when Levon died.
This video is from their 'goodbye ' concert with many of their friends lending a hand during the songs....sweet! Got these CDs PS... everyone contributed to the success..no one too big...hence...just....'The Band '.
As mac8008 said, from the movie "The Last Waltz". If you like The Band you'll love the movie! It's a concert movie and they also back up a cast of incredible guest performers, including Bob Dylan in a very memorable set.
Same here. Some of my cousins and the cool older kids always took the back of the bus. Now and then they would sing this song. It took me a while to find out it was The Band but every thing of theirs I hear I love )
Levon Helm drummer, Robbie Robertson Guitarist, Rick Danko bassist, Garth Hudson keys and wind instruments - and ANY instrument (most accomplished musician in the band). Levon was also an actor, you should check him out in "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg. What a fricken TRIP!!
This was Bob Dylan's Band for concerts and live events, until they became well known for just being "The Band." Van Morrison sang with these guys in concerts as well.
This live version is great as all of their live shows , but to get the full effect of this particular song you definitely need to hear the recorded version , Levon Helm is the drummer and lead singer it’s Americana music
If you like drummers who sing, "THE CARPENTERS", Karen has "IT". By the way the drummer is Levon Helm, they are not brothers, but they were all joined at the hip.
A big like for that one Harri. I’d request “Get on With Your Life” from An Evening Wth The Allman Brothers” Set 1. Gregg Allman at his and killer blues licks from Dickie Betts and Warren Haynes.
They are not brothers. I like this version of the song, but you don't get to really hear Garth Hudson hitting the wahwah pedal. Check out the album version!
There are two additional verses to the song on the studio version. I don’t know if they were too suggestive to capture on television, but they dealt with gambling and the playful nature of a carefree woman. I think they truncated only one verse of the song on Ed Sullivan when they played there.
The drummer is Levon Helm. A true greatest of all time ❤
Robby, one of our greatest Canadian songwriters. He is of Mohawk descent. R.I.P. Robby
Mohawk and Cayuga on his mothers side. Jewish on his father side, who died before Robbie was born. Grew up with a physically abusive stepdad.
I had the good fortune of meeting Levon! Such a cool guy!
I did too. I was 20 years old and did some work for him at his house. He gave me a tour of his studio, what a thrill. I had the good fortune of growing up 12 miles from Woodstock in the sixties and seventies.
@@waynegray1380very cool!!!

Some those alliterations are the names of famous traditional songs and tunes that go way back into early American music.
@John_Chu Thanks John, for the additional formation. 👍✌️🎶🇨🇦
*Helm
@@tombrearton3435 Thank you. Typo. 👍✌️🎶🇨🇦
Levon Helm is my favorite Drumm/singers. R.I.P He also acted some. Played Loretta Lynn's Daddy is Coal Miner's Daughter and did a great job
Also acted in The Fire Down Below, played a KY country preacher, and was amazing! ❤❤❤❤❤
They are all gone now. Robbie Robertson was the last living member of "The Band" and he passed about a year ago.

Not true - While 4 of the 5 are indeed dead, Garth Hudson is still very much alive. Robbie Robertson died in early August 2023.
A sad day when Robbie died.@@richardthomson7976
The late, great Levon Helm,my favorite drummer/singer.Also an actor, playing the old gun expert in the movie Shooter.
🎼" A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one!" Thanks, Harri!
The Band's sound was original at the time, later the industry started calling it "Americana". It's rock, but an old school mashup.
The drummer is Levon Helm. The thing that I think is so amazing about him isn't that he was a drummer that sings, but that he was an amazing drummer that sings. He could lay down a groove so deep your Jeep could get stuck in it. RIP.
Always loved Levan! Not a fan of Robbie, Always felt he used the many talents of the Band & claimed it all his own
You are right Kay. In the end robbie and levon had a big falling out. I love Levon what a great musician.@@kayedebona4576
The great Levon Helm is drummer singer here. He is multitalented.
Love the Band and The Last Waltz is a great documentary
No one sounded like the Band -- unique sound, unique lyrics, unique musicians.
AS a onetime drummer, in my younger days, I can tell you Harri, it's hard enough to have three different nothing's going on at one time just on the drums, let alone singing in a totally different rhythm as well. Levon Helm and Rick Danko (the bassist) did the majority of the lead vocals, I think.
This is a clip from the movie "The Last Waltz". Levon Helm is the drummer/singer.
Always been a fan of Robbie's and Levon, but lately I have really discovered Rick Danko, just watching him bouncing around is such a joy, as well as his harmony.
Rick Danko is my lifelong crush 🤭 I first heard this song when I was 7 years old in 1969 ❤️
Levon Helm is the drummer and the bass player is Rick Danko.
Both of whom sang many of the songs!
Great choice Miss Blondie, thanks to you and Harri for this .
Levon Helm on drums was the only American, the other four band members were Canadian……not related though. Robbie wrote all their songs and he passed away several months back. The sole surviving member is Garth Hudson.

four Canadians from the area I live and one true Southern man Levon helm what a mix of true magic
The drummer is Levon Helm from Turkey Scratch Arkansas
This is "one" of my favourites by The Band and it has a ton of memories from the "good old days" Thank you Miss B.💜and Harri.
Live The Band! The Weight is my favorite. The singer is Levon Helm and he was in a few movies after The Last Waltz. Great storytelling in the documentary and Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson had a special edition when Levon died.
Such an underrated BANGER.
Miss B - Great showcase of the fabulous The Band's Up On Cripple Creek. Bravo! Great review, Harri.
I absolutely love this one. Fantastic choice. I was a junior in HS when this was released and I loved it then. Thanks Harri and Miss Blondie 🌺✌️
This video is from their 'goodbye ' concert with many of their friends lending a hand during the songs....sweet! Got these CDs
PS... everyone contributed to the success..no one too big...hence...just....'The Band '.
Glad you're checking more into The Band.
Every time I listen to them, its like going to Paradise
Very different version of one of my favorites. I'd never seen this performance before, but The Band never disappoints. Thanks for sharing, Harri!
This is from the last waltz
Lots of party favours 😜
As mac8008 said, from the movie "The Last Waltz". If you like The Band you'll love the movie! It's a concert movie and they also back up a cast of incredible guest performers, including Bob Dylan in a very memorable set.
Dang!! This is a true classic and best diddy I ever heard at 10 yrs old!!!
Same here. Some of my cousins and the cool older kids always took the back of the bus. Now and then they would sing this song. It took me a while to find out it was The Band but every thing of theirs I hear I love )
Southern Rock.
Or Northern Rock? 4 Canadians and an Arkansan!
Not a big fan of the Band, but I love me some Levon Helm! He does a great cover of Summertime Blues !
Shannon Shaw of "Shannon and the Clams" plays bass and sings.
This band could have went so much further. So much talent and one of most underrated bands of all time. ❤
This was the first song I heard by The Band, and ever since I have been a huge fan.
How could you forget Richard Manuel, what a voice.
Another great pick! While I am not familiar with much of their work - this song definitely brings back memories. As always - Thanks Harri
Great party song!
My dad bought me this album when it came out in 1969. Every song is great. Try Rocking Chair, Across the Great Divide and When I Awake next!
Still my favorite film by Scorcese;)
Great choice. What can I say ? it’s the Band.
This was Bob Dylan's Band for concerts and live events, until they became well known for just being "The Band." Van Morrison sang with these guys in concerts as well.
Great great group....Robbie has written a couple of excellent books and great musical scores for Martin Scorsese.
Levon helms singer gunsmithing actor also music guy cancer survivor poor old dirty farmer lol nice clean style too resilient
Has a shovel
needed to hear the studio version it's just as good !
You go down the mountain to get into cripple creek. My youngest son worked at one of the casinos as a bartender. Nice place to visit.
This live version is great as all of their live shows , but to get the full effect of this particular song you definitely need to hear the recorded version , Levon Helm is the drummer and lead singer it’s Americana music
"Drummers shouldn't sing -- except Levon Helm." -- Elvis Costello
If you like drummers who sing,
"THE CARPENTERS", Karen has "IT".
By the way the drummer is Levon Helm, they are not brothers, but they were all joined at the hip.
Levon Helm, "when I go away" is worth a listen."
If I spring a leak!
Have albums seen in concert 😜😁😁😁😁❤
A big like for that one Harri.
I’d request “Get on With Your Life” from An Evening Wth The Allman Brothers” Set 1.
Gregg Allman at his and killer blues licks from Dickie Betts and Warren Haynes.
Best described as Americana
the studio version has two more verses
Certified heater 🔥
I love this reviewer
I believe Garth Hudson is the sole survivor of the group.
The Band made it look soooo eeaassyyy.....different class ! 1976 .
Hey Ham Bone give us a dance!
Best.
I just re-learned how to play this one
They are not brothers. I like this version of the song, but you don't get to really hear Garth Hudson hitting the wahwah pedal. Check out the album version!
It's just Rock N Roll. No need to always bend a band's music into different genres. Rock N Roll comes in all shapes and sizes.
There are two additional verses to the song on the studio version. I don’t know if they were too suggestive to capture on television, but they dealt with gambling and the playful nature of a carefree woman. I think they truncated only one verse of the song on Ed Sullivan when they played there.
❣️
Harry, you should checkout Phil Collins singing In the air tonight. ( pick the concert version ) if you decide to do it.
meh. Phil Collins is way over rated.
Levon Helm.
I think you would call it, swamp rock.
No, not brothers. Robbie wrote this song (for the most part).
the band for Dylan in '67 ?
Oh, if you love the Band, please ass “Ophelia” to your list.
No Harri--Robby and Rick(the other guy) are not brothers--lol.
good live version, but way way different from the studio original
Swamp rock
It's a great version but it's missing a verse.
Funky country?
Roots rock.
Funny thing is.. Robbie's microphone isn't plugged in!!
