We had a lavaliere microphone for him to wear that would have fed sound into the camera but the sound system in the venue went bad and the microphone system had to be pressed into service for feeding the sound system to the room. The fallback was the camera had to rely on the ambient sound in the room in lieu of the direct feed. It was more important for the paying audience and so it goes with video production.
Tascam DR-10L is a good audio backup.
