Yes, what's wrong is our perception of what Chen Taichi really is...your understanding of the strong martial art roots of taichi is what is perhaps misplaced...

I have reason to believe that this was scripted for the Tai chi guy to win. This is broadcast on CCTV, the China Central Television (Chinese equivalent of BBC). Showing a Tai Chi practitioner defeat a Karate (Japanese Martial Art) probably meant to show the strength of the Chinese Martial Arts compared to the Japanese.

Not discrediting the art of Chen Tai Chi, of course. I would be glad to be proven wrong. My opinion is based solely on the history of China's widespread nationalist propaganda and strict control of their population's opinions.

The kyokushin guy comes there like it was a regular sparring session at the dojo. The "tai chi" (wearing tai chi clothes is only difference) guy comes there to prove that "tai chi" is better and doing better kyokushin then kyokushin guy. Everybody claps. Looks more political and more empasis on nationalism then sports and reality.

The taiji person does appear to be making some use of taiji moves to my eye, Little things in the throws and takedowns he is doing looks like chen style application. But Also looking at kyokushin (which I am less familiar with) I believe these cross over readily with their takedowns.
Not sure on the Chinese media aspect but that kind of behavior doesn't surprise me.

They just did. Here's a video. Actually, as I guess you know, Kyokushin just recently opened its tournaments to other styles. I'd guess you'll see more. of this. I hope so, at least..
GM Mas Oyama created a devastating, very exterior, hard style, rooted in impressive strength and resistance-to-hardship training. In play with the internal, "soft" art of Tai Chi, in these videos, it's beautiful to watch. Someone else on the thread called it "ballet." He was right! In the best possible way.

Why showing up in a kyokushin tournament for no money and no prestige? I don't get it. Just go straight to Octagon and use a fairer rule. Many Kyokushin guys are still living in a fantasy-land while the sanda folks are reforming and refining everyday, regardless of their variation of the sanda style (clearly plenty of combat taichi element here). We are seeing more and more Sanda fighters in UFC and One FC and they are awesome and effective and winning.

Overeem tried his hand at learning some as well. In a way the Kumite is probably more dangerous than MMA itself. Kyokushin has really nothing to prove. Its one of the most toughest styles out there. Try it yourself first.

  • @lurian8

I really missed the real Kyokushin kicking techniques from the Kyo guys, which was quite strange. It was strange to see the body armours as well. Kyokushin is all about delivering devastating punches and kicks and the endurance to deliver and to withstand them. If you are padded like this the whole point is missing. You don't need to worry about the fighters' wellbeing. If they are true Kyokushin fighters they will handle it. And another thing. I've practiced Kyokushin for years but I've never seen this kanji in my whole life... Might be a different branch than I used to belong to? I cannot say anything about the Thai-Chi guy however. I really don't know Thai-Chi, but the whole tournament seemed to be arranged. Like they wanted to prove Thai-Chi's superiority... Wouldn't be unheard of...

A real master of any kind of martial art (and I'm not talking about the clowns prancing around with bulshido techniques) is a worthy opponent for a karateka. El Bottoo. I've studied Sanda in China and I've never ever heard any Sanda fighter say that. They respect it, but to the average Chinese person, they think that most Wushu and Tai Chi is for show and Sanda and Boxing are for real fighting.
Anyway, that's not to crap on Tai Chi, because it can be excellent. I've experienced some high level Tai Chi first hand and it's a highly effective art when done right. Same with forms like Chin-Na which can be devastating. It's just that in general it's harder to learn and get a proficient level in Tai Chi or Chin Na, so most any Chinese person under 50 will tell you most Kung Fu is impractical outside of Sanda or Shuaijiao.

The guy who has on a Karate uniform has the kanji of 松(?)塾 writen on it (please see 01:26 on this video). Kyokushin fighters will have the kanji "極真会” Kyokushin Kai on their dogi or they will put white tape over it. They will never wear some others styles patch or kanji. I said "braking arms dance". Then 1 of them threw a punch at me. Using the 1st move of the form, I made he screamed badly and all the others said "sorry we didn't know you were a real master".

Kyokushin fighters are strong like a rock in their limbs and bodies. They have weak chins and faces. Simply punch to the head and fight is over. Not quite sure why they train like they do but they really need to change it if they want to be respected in the fight world. They are currently respected in the martial arts world but not the actual fight world.

Only if the Shotokan fighter has hardened his body to a similar degree would he have even a chance. He might be faster but a fighter who does not do full body conditioning and full contact sparring is brittle and not used to the massive impacts of a real fight. This is why Muay Thai fighters are very good. They get enormous amounts of full contact hardening. You cannot expect to win fights against trained opponents in one or two strikes. Many strikes will be traded back and forth. If you cannot take those strikes and keep fighting then you will lose.

  • @tor13128

noticed many comments thinking tai chi guy is doing kyokushin. the first tai chi guy is using kung fu (more sanshou), just not tai chi. first guy isn't utilizing stances enough though imo.
1:52 is one example. Look at the kyokushin style punching vs kung fu style punching.
the catches and takedowns are from any school of kung fu turned into sports movements for sanshou. it's watered down to just a trip from whatever the original move could've been.
1:13 shaolin concept of occupying equal attacking points and adding an extra yourself. in this case, he engages both arms for both him and opponent, then uses northern shaolin scissor kick as the extra point.
1:39 the way he throws this kick is very Hong Kong 50s-70s era kung fu style. reminds me of Tai Shing Pek Kwar sanda style. no point in mentioning other kicks as they are all standard martial arts northern roundhouse kicks, side kicks, spinning side kicks, variations of front lift and crescent kicks, etc.
0:34 that's a common kung fu defensive arm position after striking.
1:05 after the leg sweep, he crosses over on top of him. probably trained in kung fu wrestling but isn't applicable in this fight.
the kung fu guy in the 2nd fight is pretty meh and i skipped him. he seems just typical sanshou but kinda bad.
it seems most ppl are expecting the kung fu guys to be in constant transition of moves in forms like the kung fu performances, which is simply not true. the form movements are simply compilations of moves to practice, like a notebook to check off moves to remember to practice them all. really, they don't fight waiting in a horse stance until you punch, then transition into a bow stance for the 2nd move, etc.
second, ppl also confuse that the movements in the forms is actually how the moves are used in real application, but that's also not true for several reasons. after compiling the moves to practice into a form, they tend to change them for several reasons.
    (1) certain effective moves look pathetic when done to the air. when performing to impress the onlookers, you simply tweak the movements to flow with the form instead of the actual application.
(1a) certain moves end up completely different and you would not know without being told the actual move. this causes confusion as hobbyists try to replicate moves exactly as in the form.
    (2) after impressing and recruiting students, all students practice the form, which they would also have incentive to hide the actual application from general students. they are not innder disciples, they can quit, they can join another school, they can be spies. the general students practice the general forms together. if they do a good job and earn trust, they can join the inner disciples and learn more.
in fact, if properly done, kung fu should look much more impressive. just recall the hours of horse stance they do. originally, it's not done by students, it's supposed to be training for an already experienced fighter who has no life, so he improves his agility, rigidity, and strength with hours of horse stance. no modern sports athlete will ever no life to this extent. just imagine a modern mma fighter, but when he steps in for a takedown, it's a bow stance with x10 force that is solid on the ground.
the mistake is modern teaching makes you sit in stances without fighting/sparring. but originally, the ppl sitting in horse stance for hours knows why they are training horse stance because they already have lots of fighting experience and they need even more of an edge.
now, some crazy kung fu practitioners have shown off horse stance by sitting in it and being unmovable, but that's mainly to show off. it's also useful to have for the wrestling aspect. originally, you sit in stances so you can be both solid and agile, not just stationary. but you can demonstrate your training by being stationary, but ppl mistake that they have to sit in a stance and not move in a real fight. they actually train in stances so their feet and legs are very strong and agile for speed , power and mobility.
so, even the first guy in this video is pretty modernized and not utilizing stances enough (imo).

Well, that's just because the vast majority of fancy kungfu (and other traditional arts') techniques simply don't work against anyone who knows what they are doing.
There's a reason pretty much all full contact sparring and pretty much all street fights look like Sanda/MMA/Kickboxing/etc.
Because that's the stuff that's actually works.

Fredrik Wahlgren your mma is nothing more than the actual sanda leitai fight that Bruce Lee tried to reconstruct from scratch. HK during his time, many began cutting syllabus wanted to make things easy. He got no place to learn shortcut way in HK, so he decided to take whatever he could find in America, Philippines and Thailand then mixed them to resemble the actual leitai fight. Kungfu nowadays already cut down to nothing's left that many don't know how to apply actual kungfu moves. All because of the masters greed for fast money, to cover up their slacking laziness that their skills deteriorated and politics. It's a shame to chinese that they don't bother to restore actual kungfu. Instead American Greg Zibb has intention to restore out of tiny bits pieces he got.

The school of the Japanese karate masters is not Kyokushin! Please watch the video carefully. The embroidery on the chest of the karateka's uniform reads Kodo Kaikan. If it is Kyokushin Karate, it is embroidered with Kyokushinkai. Therefore, the karate practitioners featured in this video are not Kyokushinkai. Don't let people who don't know about karate styles talk about Kyokushinkai in such a way as to discredit it. There are many full-contact karateka in Japan. The strongest karate school on earth is Kyokushin Kaikan. I want you to win the world championship of Kyokushin in Japan and then tell me that you have beaten Japanese karate. China has billions of people, but the Japanese have less than a tenth of their numbers. The naive Chinese have no idea how great it is for them to fight.

Modern Tai Chi is just like what you said. Some orientalist hippie mambo-jambo with zero real life applications. Now traditional kung fu, on the other hand, is more like Kyokushin Karate. Or, rather, Kyokushin is like traditional kung fu, since that's where Karate came from. Traditional styles are more focused on winning actual combat, so they involve all kinds of practice that would get you jailed if you put your young students to have.
So if you get a Chen Tai Chi practitioner that goes for the traditional ways, you would find him to be about as tough as a Kyokushin Karate fighter, on average. Also, he would probably be stronger on the legs and weaker on the torso.
But you asked about being able to defend yourself with Tai Chi, its very very unlikely to see, since most Tai Chi being taught around the world is 100% not martial. Especially yang family tai chi.

New movie producer of this show came to my kyokushin Dojo in China first, after they watch our training and video of our fighter fighting in kyokushin competition(won kyokushin world championship title twice), they says this show is more for amateur fighter, and just left. We laughed so hard after watch this episode, looks like they found some amateurs they want.

The sparings and the reactions of the spectators look very similar to some contemporary Chinese martial arts films which also happen to contain a lot of propaganda in them. The point being made is that this whole turnament is most likely a bunch of fake nonsense. Even the techniques used by the fighters look nothing like either style.
