Hey Robert and Jonny, and the rest of the Fully Charged team, of course. I'm watching this in 2019, and I've got a question - would it be possible to remaster this for today's purposes? This episode is quite frankly dug under years and years of content created since this episode aired, and yet nobody seems to have changed - people are still prejudiced against green energy and sustainable design, transport, etc. So, I see this episode as relevant regardless of how old it is. By the way, great job at the editing at the time, Robert.
Yep, just popped in for a quick visit from 2022,having listened to Robert's podcast chat with Ricky Roy. He mentioned this episode so I thought I'd zip back to 2011 for a shufty. Really wish I'd known about TH-cam at the time, it might have made me think twice about spending a windfall on a first and only brand new fossil car and maybe saved most of it to see what developments went on in ev world. We still have that car now so I suppose that's evened out the carbon footprint a bit but now we have to wait for 2024 and the end of the mortgage before we can go electric. Still there should be some good used around then. 👍
I teleported back after watching the Roadster episode with Robert and Jack in 2022 - have you considered a ‘retro’ feature in your podcast where you look back at a feature from an old episode and reflect on how that worked out over time?
Nov 2020 here! Not exactly sure when I started watching, but at least 5 years ago. Brother mentioned it having watch his previous channel with celebrities interviewed in cars.
Haven't read the comments here for a while, really wonderful points being made by people and it clearly shows that there is a huge amount of interest in the subject. Thanks for watching and getting fired up.
A few years in and I still hear those stupid comments from people as I accept delivery of our families fourth electric car. Propaganda + ignorance is a potent blend. 12years later and still enjoying Fully Charged, well done Robert and Team for being so persistent spreading the truth about these amazing cars.
"Two Bit da Vinci" suggested we watch this during his lecture at the Fully Charged Road Show in Texas 2020.. How mighty oaks do grow.. Congrats Robert and Team.. You saw it coming!
It's about time someone pulled 'Top Gear UK' on their sometimes ludicrous, unrealistic & biased presenting. Fanstastic show Robert Llewellyn, a credit to you :)
How times have changed. James May now drives an electric vehicle. The Hamster has just bought a new Morgan and has publically stated that this is a big moment for him as it will be the last petrol-engined car he ever intends to buy. Even Clarkson has suggested he is not far behind in his thinking.
I still get mighty "triggered" by one or two 2nd rate Top Gear presenters (those not allowed on the TV only on youtube videos) who either bare faced lie, or are showing their compleat ignorance about EV vehicles and lack of professionalism either way. Yet are still in position within the BBC. How the standards at the BBC have dropped over the years.
Shit I only just found this channel! Bloody hell how many hours is it going to take me to catch up! Brilliant presentation by Robert as always. If this was the very first show wow! brilliant! What a great start!
Yay, time travelling again. To see how far it has come since this to the event this weekend at Farnborough. Thanks Robert and the team. I'll be watching old Carpool videos next...
Wow! The almighty algorithm has deemed me fit to watch The Pilot Episode yet again in 2022. And Robert certainly got the message across, way back then. And he drove the original Tesla Roadster, the lucky bugger. 😋
Was all the information correct? Some, perhaps was misleading. If I'm not mistaken, the Mitsubushi had a 16KWH battery. Then Bobby was standing in front of a large wind turbine and said it would charge in 20 minutes. That would make it a 48 KW turbine. Now then, I guess the limitation here is the Chadamo socket. But the statment doesn't look good :-( Again, I'm guessing but let's assume it's a 1MW turbine (had a quick google but didn't find it). That could charge tha car in 57 seconds if it didn't melt everything on the way to the batteries. And the batteries. And my rubbish maths is correct. So, perhaps it would be fairer to say the big fan could charge 60 cars in an hour or 20 cars in 20 minutes.
I am guessing that the charge from a big wind turbine would well outpace the batteries ability to take on a charge. In that case it would be charging at the rate of a "fast charge" setting. Twenty minutes could be right. They could have explained it instead of just expect9jng us to swallow it.
2022 update: Fully Charged is a national gem. The message has turned out to be completely accurate and the show has a very bright future (unlike Top Gear). Knighthood for RL please.
I love the comparison with mobile phones. I tell people the same thing now, or also compare to flat-screen LCD monitors. Sure, maybe the car isn't for you right now. But that doesn't mean they won't catch on with other people.. and 10 years from now when they have improved, then you might reconsider.
I’ve been watching Fully Charged for a few years now so it’s great to see the first episodes…. And this is a GREAT episode. Love ya Robert - keep it up!
I remember at one time you said you didn't know what you were doing Robert. The thing is you tried and the result benefited people around the world. I think of all my friends that have been waiting for over a decade to to risk buying an electric car. In playing it safe to preserve their financial safety the entire planet became less safe. Much like who killed the electric car the first response is to blame others and not make any changes in our own life. You live and give an example that change is possible and the benefits significantly outweigh the cost. The net result of your lifestyle changes extend our opportunities a little bit more. Thank you greatly
So odd to watch this in 2017, he was so right, and the tech is here and now. Always have been a supporter of renewable power because it's basically free and safe and friendly to our Earth. Why didn't we do this sooner (and weird enough we were doing it a hundred years ago) . I'm all for this and I live in Canada which has at least as much ready power awaiting as the UK is already harvesting
Great to revisit this first broadcast. And to be honest the arguments for and against, are just the same as today. Wonderfully illustrated by Robert. Glad you kept it up... keep going
I remember watching this first episode when it came out. It would be great to see 2021 Robert introduce this as a throwback to when it all started, or perhaps when the channel hits a million subscribers to introduce clips of the show from each year!!
Catching up on the old episodes and this pilot is awesome! Super informative and practical yet very entertaining! Bang on past, present, and [hopefully] future Robert Llewellyn! Got my Nissan Leaf in October 2013 and absolutely love it, will share this vid with family and friends who are probably bored by my rants now! :D
So much fun to come and look at this - I'd not seen it before, and I'm watching in late 2018, about to end a 2-year payment deal on my BMW i3 and switch next year to a Hyundai Kona. Things have certainly moved on, and I'm so glad that what Robert said about the industry has come true in so many ways! Can't wait to see where the next 8 years take us...
It amazes me how 13 years later... this is still on point. And yet... nobody argues about a 13 old mobile or computer . Great job to all at Fully Charged Show TEAM
I remember this episode well, in a time that I was watching Jack Richard and contemplating converting a Mazda RX8 to an EV. How times have change. Keep up the great work Robert & Team! 😁
@j101saar A fascinating argument. Battery management systems, (the biggest box in an electric car after the batteries) make the 400 charge argument somewhat mute. I don't think anyone knows yet how many cycles they can take, haven't been electric cars with Li-Ion batteries around for long enough. I've driven an electric vehicle with 80,000 miles on clock, same batt pack, many more than 400 charges, still works a treat
I've been a Fully Charged viewer/subscriber/fan for a few years now, but never actually watched this pilot before. Robert is a visionary! Thank you for the show and spreading the truth. And never stop ranting for a good cause!
I’m about 7 years late to this pilot, about the same delay as some of the audio in this video. Love the show all through it’s life, interesting to see it’s evolution through the 7 years and still going strong. With the next few years now posing to be the true and long awaited revolution finally arriving.
Loved watching your show for a number of months now and thought I should have a look at your first video. So glad I did, absolutely top notch stuff, could not make the points you do any better!!
2021 and looking back on these episodes with interest. What a fantastic source of information and documentation of the Electrification journey has been produced here... brilliant!
Amazing pilot Robert, and even knowing it all beforehand, with being an avid carpool watcher, it was still highly entertaining and I am absolutely looking forward to the next episode.
Followed the link to this pilot episode from Dan's blog. Extraordinary quality right from the start. I remember that Top Gear episode well, not because I watched it but because so many people, knowing I was into EVs, quoted Clarkson to me as "evidence" I was wrong. What a windup, I can feel my blood pressure going up again! Anyway, hats off to you Robert for making great content for ten solid years and hopefully many more to come. Your passion shines through.
Thanks Robert, that's completely changed my mind on EVs. I'm embarrassed to say that I fell for the nonsense being spouted about them long ago. I'm going to have to wipe my memory to de-program myself and start from the beggining. Cheers from Oz! :)
It's 2024 and @ElectricVehicleMan brought me here 👋🏼😃 it's kinda sad that Robert's still having to battle the same disinformation 13years later but I'm so glad he and the team still does + that Tesla Roadster Sport is still the best looking vehicle they've ever produced (thanks Lotus 😉)
Wow! This is so interesting to watch, I have been watching your content for about a year now, and decided to watch your first ever video. I am impressed with the quality of your 1st video! Congrats on 550k Subscribers!!
Have been a big fan for a long time but I didn't realise how early you got into the game! 7 years! How things have moved on since this first video, and you're predictions are all spot on!
Well Done Robert and Team, great series! largely on the information you have provided, I now have solars, BMW 330E hybrid, and Tesla powerwall 2 save a fortune on energy costs... Thankyou and well done!!
Love how TH-cam wants us to re-watch shows. But this one is, most entertaining. Also, I didn't remember how information packed it was. Wow, 12 years ago, we knew so much.
I'm following Fully Charged for several years and meanwhile my new car, yes and EV, has arrived in Belgium and I will be able to drive it in a week or two. Just watched this Pilot episode and must say that it still very enjoyable and in my opinion not dated at all. Keep up to nice work. Kind regards from Belgium.
@Chobaca That's a very important question and one I want to investigate. At present I think it worth reminding ourselves of the damage we've been doing for past 100 years extracting massive amounts of oil, we've all got used to it, it's seen as 'normal.' However, I take your point and the damage we could do by battery manufacture is really important
I am with you on this one . I think its about time someone got there voice out there into the public .good one Rob .Keep it up I will spread the news as much as I can .
You probably won't read this Robert, but I just wanted to say that, for your FIRST EVER episode of the amazing Fully Charged, this was brilliant. It was great to see that even in this first episode there were definite hints of the now famous ROBERT'S RANTS!!! Things have certainly moved a long way since that first outing - I think two out of the three presenters of that'light entertainment programme' are now converts to BEVs. I don't know about Mr C (yuk) but it wouldn't surprise me if he never conceded to your greater knowledge and wisdom!!!! He he!
Revisiting this as a long time subscriber and it's good to see just how much progress has been made in the last 7 years. Battery technology and energy density has improved greatly and now most major manufacturers are rushing to get their EV models to market.
Just watched this and it’s amazing how far F.C. has come. I think due to this show informing people that there is a better way in turn has put pressure to the Auto manufactures. Now Jaguar, Audi will soon bring to market their EVs (I pray LandRover soon aswell) but what will be the big pay off for families will be energy storage and the ability to buy cheap energy and store it for when it’s too expensive to heat/power the home. Well done to FullyCharged, avid fan :-)
Wonderful retrospective view of how Fully Charged came into being. Keep up the good work Robert as it is needed perhaps even more than it was back then as the fossil fuel industry has realised the danger posed to their industry and are fighting back using every dirty trick in their arsenal.
@spinycrayfish The figures I quoted in this episode came from the Royal Academy of Engineering report of 2008, there have been many other reports which come up with many different figures. Interestingly the most commonly quoted reports are from organisations directly funded by oil corporations. It is now widely accepted that to refine one gallon of gasoline requires 9 kWh of electricity, some argue this is 'total energy cost' but others dispute this. The figures are not in any way 'nonsense.'
@@Brandon_letsgo You can update your knowledge. There are no electric cars on lots waiting to be sold. THere is a waiting line. That implies, people want rather EV, than ICE. Tha implies, ICE will fade out into non existance.
You can keep your earthquakes if you like them :-) I'm more concerned that Putin is funding neo-Nazis, which is a bit weird considering how much pride they take in beating the Nazis.
Yes, if Germany was serious about reducing CO2 they should have shut down some coal plants instead of nuclear. When they and all their neighboring countries have stopped burning coal and natural gas then could be the time to discuss shutting down nuclear plants. There are some voices in the environmental movement that have realized that nuclear is the safest source of electricity there is, I hope that realization spreads. My only concern with new nuclear power plants is that they are bloody expensive. That industry will die if every new reactor costs 10 billion.
I'm playing catchup on the show- all good stuff and this is the best one I've seen so far. Would be nice to see more about infrastructure and power supply. Maybe something on research into wave / tidal Energy? Assuming of course that wouldn't mean changing the light bulb.....
Excellent. Now we have a debate so long as an unnamed 3 presenters on a popular car show can provide a balanced and productive argument with substance over hyperbolic style. We may have the opportunity to make well informed choices on our future vehicles and the means by which they are powered. Well done Mr Llewellyn your perseverance has paid off.
10 years later and still very relevant.
Well done Robert, well done whole FC team.
Yes we are hearing those same arguments after 12 years of modern EV development, even with 400 mile ranges and 15 minutes charging times now!
14 years now, and FC is more relevant than ever.
Glad there's so many arguments being aired here, that's what the show is all about. Thanks for all your interest.
Robert

My algorithm recommended this 11 years later and it was still applicable! Love the show, Robert! Bought our first EV (ID.4) based on your reviews.
Roberts garage wall looked very bare back then compared to the Telsa power walls, storage, inverters and wiring of late 2019 :-)
I came back in 2019 to see how it all started.

In ten years, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come along!

Well done to FullyCharged, avid fan :-)
almost 7 years and people ain't changed even though the technology has
Very entertaining and educational. Thanks for the video.
Wonderful retrospective view of how Fully Charged came into being. Keep up the good work Robert as it is needed perhaps even more than it was back then as the fossil fuel industry has realised the danger posed to their industry and are fighting back using every dirty trick in their arsenal.
Very well done Robert and Ben.
Lucas: Yes, and keeping an army in the middle east to protect "our" oil is of course completely free of tax payer subsidy...
How have never seen this until now! What a great start :)
12 years old and still relevant. Brilliant.
This is still relevant now brilliant bit of reporting Robert
Still one of my fave episodes
Great Plot Robert, you are full of all kinds of great information, Cheers Mate !!!
I had no idea Robert had been doing this for so long. What a fantastic show!
If only I knew then what I know now, I would have tried harder to get my own EV
I'm playing catchup on the show- all good stuff and this is the best one I've seen so far. Would be nice to see more about infrastructure and power supply. Maybe something on research into wave / tidal Energy? Assuming of course that wouldn't mean changing the light bulb.....
Just amazing. So advanced in that time
After 12 years, the pilot episode holds up quite well.
Really nice show. Looking forward to the next episode.
Wow fabulous history lesson - thanks so much Robert and team I have found your vidoes really useful as I do what i can to turn my life green
