@@Tomodachi91ve No,not unprotected, he got him where he needed to go safe and sound, and now it's time for him to live on. He felt that if he stayed with him he wouldn't have been as pure as he was....thats what I got from it,such a good movie.

He answered that question. He pretended to be dead so PX will feel guilty and even if he practices the sutra, he won't use it for evil ways.
Because that was the promise he made FR. The guilt he feels should ensure he kept the promise. So even though he became the most powerful he never went bad.
Also, I think he always protected him or was near at all times. To verify he kept the promise or w/e. After all, he showed up as soon as PX was no longer bound by the guilt and forgot to visit the grave.
