Edit: i just read it back and it sounds like I'm making fun of him. Don't misunderstand that bc Xie Lian is my absolutely favorite character of all time and I know ever little detail about him even to his festival robes and what each thing symbolizes and how many white robes he actually has.

Ok so basically, Xie Lian is a God / Heavenly Official whos ascended for the third time in a row. Its the third time because he already got banished from Heaven twice. Before he got turned into a god, he was a Prince in the Kingdom Of Xian Le in the mortal realm. His kingdom fell though.
FIRST BANISHMENT
As I said Xie Lians kingdom fell because of a powerful calamity ghost (His name is Bai Wuixiang/BWX or "White No Face") who wanted to torment Xie Lian. He got banished because he went back to the mortal realm without permission from the Heavenly Emperor which is totally unfair, all he wanted to do was save his people and he got punished for it.
SECOND BANISHMENT
After the fall of his kingdom, White No Face continued to torment him until he went insane and eventually started to become like White No Face (which was BWX's plan) and he ascended but got Banished for trying to attack the Heavenly Emperor, thus he earned his cursed shackles on both his ankles and neck to punish him. He almost died but a farmer saved him and shielded him from rain by giving him a bamboo hat, and that one person was enough to make him believe in humanity again.
ORIGINS OF HUA LIAN
When Hua Cheng was younger, he got saved by Xie Lian who said that he offered to be his meaning to live if he has none. Xie Lian was the only who believed him and recognised that he was just a scared child, not a cursed one. Hua Cheng then witnessed the fall of his kingdom, and the pain he went through when Xie Lians own ex followers and people tortured, ridiculed, and destroyed his properties all because Xie Lian, a 17 year old teenager couldnt save a whole damn kingdom. And since then he vowed to become stronger to repay Xie Lian and so he would never get hurt again.
WU MING
When Xie Lian almost went insane, he only had one follower left and his name was Wu Ming, he treated him very badly until Wu Ming died fighting for him and after Xie Lian gained back his faith for humanity and after Xie Lians third ascension he never once asked to remove his cursed shackles so it could serve as a reminder to never forget Wu Ming punish himself for the way he acted towards him. But plot twist! Wu Ming was Hua Cheng trying to support Xie Lian because he recognised that he was going through a really bad time.
In short, Hua Cheng fell in love with Xie Lian as a child for saving him, fought for him, "died" for him, and waited 800 years for Xie Lian to come back. Hua Cheng, the one Xie Lian fell in love with him ever since Wu Ming. Hua Cheng, Xie Lians one and only truly devoted follower and lover. Hua Lian, who waited 800 years for each other and finally got to spend an eternity to together to make up for the centuries apart.

Xianle is located in the human realm, its a kingdom that fell due to a curse/disease placed upon a face, xie lians parents died when he was 17, the same year he ascended to the celestial realm and became a matrial god, he was forbade from going to the human realm to save his people from something(i forgot what) but went anyway, where he found his parents dead from suicide, he fought and fought to save his people and in the end his attempts were unsuccessful and his people blamed him for them dying, torturing him for a long time; such as stabbing him over 100 times, suffocating him(i think), and leaving him there to supposedly die from blood loss, which cannot happen since hes immortal now; which led him to ask 'why cant i die?'
Some lore on Xie lian
He was the crown prince of xianle, and only child of his parents, he saved a child from falling to his death during a ceremony(?), after xianle fell he was sorta like the white calamity, his only loyal subject being the child he saved in another form, a late teens form, when that disquise was to die xie lian lost his only subject, i domt recall when but somewhere along the line he was buried alive for 500 years, he was a general in a war at some point too, though he didnt want to be and prefered to try to keep peace, he saved a child during that, feeding the child and watching over the child, the child could control certain snakes that were deadly and they had broken into the area that the armys were placed and the armies fought the snakes wnd another army at the same time, in some way or another xier lian was said to have died by being run over by numerous things to save the child, xie lian had ascended to the heavenly principles 3 times, 2 times he was banished with shackles to prevent him from using his spiritual powers, when he ascended the 3rd time he caused destruction in the realm, angering gods, he spoke with the gods and apologized to those he caused harm too, he was sent to earth to figure out how to help woman from being abducted wnd killed on the day before their eddings, to which while he was doing so he wore a bridal outfit to disguise as a bride to lure out the one killing the brides, while soing so he met hua cheng, the crimson rain sought flower, or a supreme rank ghost, much like the white calamity is, he had a walk with hue cheng ! Xie lians known to be a strap collector or a trash god, with no shrine or followers, to the gods.
