This was an amazingly important talk and it deserves to get a great deal more attention. The end of Moore's Law requires a transition to new ways of thinking. Thank you Michigan Engineering for posting this and Stephen Forrest for giving the talk.

      #Ranganatha Kulkarni An essentially substance-less talk - Forrest is a dick. @InfiniteUniverse88

An excellent presentation by Stephen Forrest. I am with him in saying that it is not apocalypse but a glorious new beginning!

Why no AMD in the graphic at 22:58?

Globalfoundries is listed instead, presumably to keep the list simple to read without mention of spin-off companies, renaming, etc.

hughJ you can take Globalfoundries off the list now. They decided to get off the feature shrink treadmill at 14nm and give up trying to develop a 7nm node.

Improved software is what I am betting will be one of the main breakthroughs in computer hardware capabilities.

You know what else has increased like Moore's Law? Moore's Law. It was originally doubling every 12 months for 10 years. Around 2000 it was doubling every 18 months. Now it's every 24 months.

Why must the stock market be based on Computer engineers? And ever expanding economy? Why can't a steady state be OK, until a real breakthrough in technology.

people have got used to rapid progress. steady state will feel like a crash.

The potential for growth is what attracts investment (money and people). If progress is looking poor then R&D dollars will be diverted to other industries, likewise the interest in fields like electrical engineering and computer science will be less attractive for future students. When that happens it results in a "winter" of stagnation in a particular field that can last for a generation or more.
