It's good to see that your primary sponsor has renewed their faith in your channel. I was surprised to discover that I have been an unwitting long-term beta tester for their new cable management system - non-resonant and oh so non-conductive.
Just finished listening to Qobuz hi res version of RATM debut album on my Edition XS and Topping DX3 Pro+ and i still have goosebumps. I literally couldn’t stop listening until the album played through. $700 US for performance like that. Incredible. What a great time to be an audiophile! Great advice Randy, keep on keeping it real.
I'm sold based on this. Using Metallica and Zepp as a reference helped enormously. Far too many reviewers bring out all these "headphone test" songs that I don't think many people ever listen to casually, so hearing the impression based on actual music is awesome. And you're right about burn in. Planars absolutely do not need it.
At first I was mad that I heard about the XS literally days after buying Sundara, but then I saw the headband. Big single piece bands like that one (no matter how cushy) give my poor noggin' a big old pain. Suspension headbands ftw!
I really like that Sith audio makes affordable stuff like the cable management nano-tape for entry level users like me. I feel that the carbon impregnated flex isolation strip really improves the speed and control of the lower mid and upper punch regions. My only problem is that I can't afford the measurement or segmentation tools for properly delineating the cable management material. I'm saving up to get that kit, but in the mean time I'm using my phone and a kitchen knife to create the cable management segments. I'm pretty sure I'm losing resolution because of that. Thanks Sith Audio.
Dekoni Nuggets work wonders for those types of HiFiMan headbands. I have them on the Deva Pro and if you have a bigger head you can put Nuggets over the L and R indicators to alleviate any pressure spot on the top.
I spent a lot of money on a pair of headphones once and felt guilty at the time. That was back in the 90's. But I still have, and enjoy, my HD-600's so it was money well spent!!!
I got mine about three weeks ago and I think they are great! On the forums there has been a discussion about whether they need an absurd amount of power or not. I drive them both from an iPhone and from the L50 and I find them equally enjoyable. It would be great to have someone trying them on different amps!
"Audiophiles" will tell you need to buy a $1000 amp to enjoy your headphones, but the truth is, even $100 amps like the Schiit Heresy are more than enough to power 99% of headphones to their full potential. There's literally only two qualifiers for a good (non-tube) amp, and that's the amount of power it can supply and how little distortion it adds. The Heresy can output 3 WATTS of power with virtually 0 distortion. Cheap amps today made by reputable brands measure better and output more power than 10 year old flagship amps that cost over a grand in their time.
@@rainydaygirlz The 'ASR' kind of measurements don't really result in any audible differences as amply illustrated by Andrew from 'The Headphone Show' in his video on SINAD and also as illustrated by Lachlan from 'The Passion for Sound', Sandu from 'Sound News' and many other regular listeners as well. What matters is the type of amplification used (class A, op amp, discreet etc) and the quality of components used in the gear.
150hrs break-in is what they recommend. I love my Edition XX and never understood the criticisms. The XS is better yet and I can hardly imagine better than XX already. Even my XX smoked the Sundara in my mind.
@@thrywyn my comment about seeming reasonable was sarcastic. As far as burn in goes I’ll run things for a couple of days or speakers for a couple of weeks in the bedroom before I review. Some things sound exactly the same. Other stuff does break in. Meze Rai solo and Elac Unifi 2.0 are the two items that changed the most radically. I don’t have any scientific evidence to back that up. Just my experience and I’m not going to argue about it.
I currently own Sundaras and had Anandas. The Ananda was like the Sundara but THICC bass and a much wider soundstage but less impact overall. The sundara likes to image most things into the center and a bit close to the face, and then have left and right off at a 45. I'm thinking I'll get the Edition xs and get enough of the Ananda out of them but without the price tag. The Ananda's wider stage with greater depth and razer thin center image versus the blob of the Sundara was wonderful. The reason I returned them was because one of the cups was grinding on the frame above where it was held it to the headband, I immediately lost faith in the build.
Love the headphone stuff. Just started getting into them since I can listen when the kids go to bed and I absolutely love it. Loving the Sundaras, but you know how the chase goes.
XS are the cats meow! Huge upgrade over Sundara’s. Everything comes to life even more. Powered by SMSL SU-9 and Topping A90. Inspiring, immersive sound stage, rich bottom end. I do have to eq 12khz for some female vocals to tame a bit of sizzle Andrew talks about. Comfort level cannot be underestimated over Sundaras. Took Cheapaudiomans reco and went for the XS. Dead on assessment. Rather than use the technical descriptions you often hear. I will use emotional verbiage. XS opens the door to a new portal to sonic nervana. The roof lifts open on your listening experience. Fun expands to wonder and audio joy. I now have a seat in the inner circle of the recording studio. Every note, every vocal nuance, every piano tickle (Joe Sample or Eliane Elias) bass punch, it’s a different world. More than ear candy, sonic bliss!
Hi i have ifi zen dac v2 Dac/Amp which gives around 320 milli watt. I have two options: 1. Adding ifi zen can dedicated amp + edition xs to the existing Dac/amp 2 adding Ananda to existing Dac/Amp without dedicated Amp. Xs + zen can amp costs me same as the Ananda alone. Help me please.
@@FabioGrenkh oh! That was 2 years back. In these 2 years, i used Xs with zen dac + amp. Later upgraded to XS+ topping E70 dac + Topping A90D amp. Later moved to hifiman He100 SE. Then added Burson soloist 3X grant tourer amp. Later upgraded to Gustard R26 Dac. Next added Gustard U18 DDC. @@gamingandmusic9217 Damn, that’s quite the journey 😅 I‘m currently trying out a few things with the Xs and don’t really now which Amp/Dac I should use. Thank you, man. Your work is fantastic. I just got this headphone and I really like it. My next step is to try to mess around with the EQ. Maybe to add some punch to upper middle range and reduce slightly something at the treble.
Thanks for the headphone content. Anyone wanting for an affordable planar would definitely have the XS on the short list. In the same way, someone looking to buy would be asking themselves how it compares with the Sundara; so, the shootout is right on target. I liked the video.
Amen to these. Had mine for about a month now and they are fantastic. They're trading punches with my Modhouse T60RPs in a few areas, but excel in others. Love em.
I have the Ananda and it's just perfect! I'm curious to compare those two, but it seem that the XS is a cheaper version of the Ananda, mean the same sound for less money. Good for customers!
@@Viettzz Never listened the Xs, but the specs looks the same. Ananda: 8-55kHz, 103dB; XS: 8-50kHz; 92dB. For half the price, the XS is a good deal, but he Ananda is very efficient (sensivity).
The specs are very different, just look at the sensitivity. This needs around 10x the power of the Ananda, it really needs a headphone amp. Many other headphones have similar quoted frequency ranges but that's not very meaningful. Sound though IS quite similar, XS has better bass extension and is more forward. Ananda can sound more smooth. Ananda has slightly better soundstage. Fit for me is much better on the Ananda, the XS is very loose. Much looser than the HE400SE which has the same headband. XS is definitely competitive with the Ananda sound-wise but I don't think you need to rush out and buy it if you already have the Ananda, it's relatively subtle differences- and it's not all one-sided, the Ananda is still better in some ways, the Edition XS in others. Also, it's not really half the price. Ananda is $599 now, this is $499 (US pricing). In China, they're both even cheaper, Ananda is around $450-470 in China, this is around $360-390. So it's just a little less. They made the saving in the packaging (no faux leather box), the cable (simple rubbery cable, I actually think better than the Ananda but it's more simple), the headband (worse IMO than the Ananda). I don't think they skimped on the drivers, they are certainly competitive.
@George Petroff Hi from INDIA. I also have zen dac v2 and am planning to buy Xs. How is the combination? is the V2 power sufficient for Xs ? Please reply me.
I got these about a year ago, the XS is still my endgame . I have it paired with a monolith dac/amp combo with EQ. Or portable Fiio BTR7 DAP and balanced cables.
just bought these....already own a pair of lcdx and wanted something similar sounding for travel but only lighter and less expensive ...thanks for the reassurance
I've had them for over a month and a half now - I love em. A great compliment to my Focal Elexes. And yeah, these two are my endgame. Nuff said. PS: I think my ears match with CheapAudioMan's - I feel just the same with these! I've stopped looking for cans now, myself.
What are the diffs between them? The Elex are my best open back set and I use the Ether CX for closed back. I have an old HiFiMan HE-560 v1 that is as clear and open as the Elex, but is also without the punch and without the bass, even when connected balanced to a Jot 2.
@@edwarddodge7937 well the XS have a larger scale to the round Hifimans (I have the he400i and he4xx for comparison). I mean the XS are not miles ahead (I don't believe in the night and day schools of thought), but somehow the egg shaped Hifimans in general, and this in particular, do it almost right in every way, including good and more present sub bass. How they differ from the Elex is that they Elex are more punchy and dynamic, whereas the XS are yet even more open and have a much bigger soundstage, and a bit more relaxed, like Randy said... U curve. The Elex may feel a bit more detailed, yet the XS are much less agressive and offensive. The timber is good on both but a bit more natural on the XS. And the XS really are the least offensive in my stable, and never fatiguing. Never. They're mellow, relaxed. Occasionally, they may feel like having more relaxed mids, so that's not their best feature, but I'm ok with relaxed mids. The Elex has more detail and forward mids. These are laid back. I think the Elex may have more bass. But the XS seems to me about the best planar sound at this price. In my mind, these don't quite best each other out, but rather the best of both worlds. TL;DR, just follow Randy on what he says here. He's saying it better.
@@divinginthedeep Thanks, you just answered all my questions. Elex has more detail, forward mids. & may have more bass. I'm still in the honeymoon phase with my elex.
@@deadline7610 yes... I mean people may have some QC complaints with the Elex (I have none personally, drivers never clipped nor failed), so besides that... Elex truly are something indeed. Stage could have been better, but imaging compensates for that well enough. Brilliant headphones. Can't be wronged.
@@divinginthedeep I remember before my Sundara purchase people were talking about HiFiman QC. Did you get a chance to try the elex with tubes ? I'm curious. The xduoo 602 sounded interesting as an entry point. Thanks
Randy you are literally the first person to name metallica or any rock/metal group in an audiophile video I have yet seen and I love you for it, Bass Matters... Period. as a long term metal head and rock listener I can never get the boom of my guitar cab to sound right on all these so called 'HiFi headphones'. It's not really HiFi if the sound spectrum is incomplete is it? It can be better for one thing or the other but compared to something like a studio monitor that we mix on, being a complete frequency response and being fun is more important than just being good at some one thing for me. Reviewers should be more considerate of a majority of house/electro and metal/rock listeners as well because for the longest time I changed gear not having the slightest idea which one would suit my tastes best until I was already out of money on that piece of gear.
I don't think these are that great TBH. I wouldn't buy them again, personally. To my ears they don't sound all that clear, like there's quite a bit of earcup resonance. Like he said sibilance and the bass isn't well controlled. And I got them for $269 on Amazon- not worth it to me.
Man usually I agree with you but when you can get he560v4 for 250 less or the he6se for 500 (both have this headband)pretty regularly (if you already have a beefy amp sitting around)...it's hard to rec these at retail. was able to a/b one against my personal 560v4 on a Magnius stack and they still lack the sub bass extension that the 560 has (they also don't necessarily sound wider to me... Perhaps a bit more verticality, but definitely not much deeper to my ear) Of course if you don't have a powerful amp, or don't want one, this may be a better option as it should play really nicely with a lot of the lower power options and even portables on the market.
@@jmm2226 yeah that should be a fine pairing. As long as you aren't concerned with going balanced (it's not truly balanced...though the xlr out does measure better than the se). I have a friend that grabbed one when he decided to get into desktop audio and it seems nice enough. I just can't get over the canted design lol.
I have the HE560v1 and the bass is a bit underwhelming even with an Asgard 3 or Jot 2. What are you driving your v4s with? And did the bass get a boost in the HE560 somewhere between v1 and v4?
@@edwarddodge7937 it's not a bassy headphone. Very neutral. The sub bass extension however dips down confidently past 20hz, as in it can play those tones where some headphones can't with as much authority. It does not however, add anything to the bass(but represents the mix as it was recorded). Daily driver is a Magnius and Modius.

This headphone definitely was on my candidate list. However, I ended up picking up the Sennheiser HD600 since they suit my library of classical music very well and often go on sale. You can get one new or good condition used for under $300 easily. Got mine new for $275.
Thanks for the review! On the market for a pair. Question. I also listened to Senneisers HD650’s. Is it fair to compare them? I think I’ll purchase either one of these. Any thoughts or tips? Sorry to bother
I owned the HE500, the Ananda, the Sundara, Arya and now the Edition XS and never had any issues. Yes, some of the materials used are poor and the finish is not as high as other cans but I have never had any issues. Just thought I should share my experience.
I have a set if Hifiman Ananda's that I got from Amazon for $599 a few weeks ago. That has been the pricing for the Ananda's the last month or so. I am still under the return window with the Ananda's but i only have 2 more weeks. Anyone out there with thoughts of the Edition XS compared to the Ananda's. Really enjoying the Ananda's either way but i think i would enjoy that headband more...? Had the Sundara's but just didn't enjoy the weight or the round cups. Sounded nice though but the Ananda's won (for me) out so i sent the Sundara's back.
Hey @cheapaudioman, I want to thank you for the recommendation. I went with SMSL SU6, SH6 and Edition XS. I hope I made an excellent purchase decision. I am looking for validation though (First headphone system btw)
Just bought these from Amazon UK at a fantastic price with a case. The only thing is, if there wasn't a mod for the headband, I would have had to send them back as they just didn't fit, they're huge! I have an average sized head, but they just dropped when placed on my head! The mod now makes them perfect, just a shame it's necessary.
I did get hot spots on top from the edition XS but all I had to do was get an extra HD600 headband cushion (knock off one worked good) and 3 velvro straps to keep it in place. Little bending of the yolks to get more side clamp and these feel almost as close to my HD6XX for comfort as I think I can get them.
It would be great to interesting to hear your viewpoint on these too. I got mine about three weeks ago and I think they are great. On the forums there have been a discussion about whether they need an absurd amount of power or not. I drive them both from an iPhone and from the L50 and I find them equally enjoyable. I hope someone like you can try them on different amps and tell us the truth!
Hello sir great review, may I ask what are the good recommended Amp/Dac combos to go with this pair of headphones, my setup is PC and budget is around $800. Ty !!
If you have the Sundara and you want what extra punch buy a Grado 125 with is very good with rock music. For other music I like my Sundara using a dragonfly cobalt. Due to family reasons I bought a Dali io4 headphone for 230 euros and using Bluetooth the sound is very good, open and detailed but it’s a closed back system with give an additional bass but his price also good value. Greetings, Ludo
Those seem awesome. I have a pair of Hifiman HE-5XXs, which I really enjoy. I got them on an open box deal for $159, and I've compared them to several of the $200-ish popular open-back favs, and I think they're probably my favorite of the bunch. I compared them to a friend's Sundaras, and I even think the 5XX, while not measuring quite as well, subjectively are pretty evenly matched with the biggest differences being ergonomic and subjective tuning preference. The Sundara's a touch more detailed, and the 5XX has, I felt, slightly better separation and soundstage. The Sundara's a little punchier and sparklier, while the 5XX struck me as a tad more neutral, or maybe a little dryer. Subjectively, I felt like the Sundara would be more of a lateral move than a true upgrade, so these XSes could be the perfect upgrade path for 5XX owners.
I think the main advantage of the "stealth" magnets, is they have less air turbulence, because sharp corners can cause that. It does sound like a great pair of headphones! Maybe you can try the Dan Clark / Drop Open-X at some point, and compare them?
No, it's acoustic science... Square magnets have a hard flat surface that reflects soundwaves like a mirror back towards the source of the sound... It's reverberation, sound reflections, this can do many things to ruin the sound, specifically it can cancel out a lot of frequencies and ruin detail retrieval. The stealth magnets are rounded, made to be acoustically invisible, or at least acoustically transparent, less reverberation, less frequency nullification, etc... Causes the headphones sound to "open up". I mean, the air turbulence could be a factor too (Like a happy accident), but the stealth magnets was designed specifically with the intention of allowing soundwaves to pass by the magnets easier.
@@cheapaudioman Thing is, I don't think that they are great for metal. I love em for jazz, classic, rock and voices are especially gorgeous but for Metal Hardrock and punchier music in general I never found harder hitting headphones then my RP 60s. The 60s creak horribly but I love em anyway. The Planars are the best headphones I ever heard when it comes to "beautiful" music. I hope that wasn't to detailed : )

Dangit Randy, I bought these after watching your review. I tend to prefer a warmer sound signature so I will try them with my Xduoo MT602's. I'm currently using the Sennheiser 560s for music and gaming. How do you think they will hold up in comparison? Cheers!
@@citizenuk Sorry for the delayed response. I wanted to get a fair amount of time in with these headphones before commenting. Okay so, if you are in the market for a pair of headphones and 500 dollars is not a big stretch for your hobby then I would definitely get these. The clarity, detail, soundstage, imaging, bass, weight, and comfort are quite impressive. It was a little weird getting used to them at first coming from the 560s because the XS feel a lot looser and relaxed on your head. I actually hated the way they felt as a first impression. The 560s have a much more athletic fit (if that makes any sense). After putting in the time with the Hifiman I very much got used to the fit and feel. I initially tried these headphones with my mt-602 hybrid tube amp and thought the headphones were an improvement but wasn't sure if I wanted to keep the much more expensive headphone as I was pretty satisfied with my 560s. However, I thought I would use my Schiit Magni amp (using Schiit Modi DAC) and at the moment I realized I must keep these headphones. The detail, speed, impact, and separation of these headphones really came to life. I was a bit surprised as I much preferred my MT-602 amp in the past. I believe this is because these are planar headphones vs dynamic as many might note. Last night was my Friday and wanted to go to bed to catch up on some lost sleep. I made the mistake of putting on some FLAC music files and ended up staying up a couple more hours. As far as sound signature/timbre goes, they provide amazing clarity and detail but are coated with a little smoothness or silk if you will. I've heard some people say the vocals sound a little recessed and they would eq the headphones to fix that. I would agree that I initially thought that to be true but I either got used to the vocals or they just needed time to be broken in (if you believe that is a thing). So music and movies sound great but what about FPS gaming compared to the 560s? Well, I think both of these headphones perform on a top tier competitive level. The 560s might be a little less fatiguing but the Hifiman XS has a slight edge in almost all areas. Bigger sound stage, better imaging, more detail and separation. Will these headphones make you a better player? That is up for debate. I've been able to reach Diamond in Apex Legends both splits this season with the 560s in split 1 and the Hifiman XS split 2, respectively. Again the XS might have a slight edge and I'll be primarily if not exclusively using my XS headphones if I want to waste more of my time trying to push to Masters. Looks like the cheapaudioman can be trusted as what he described all appears to be true to my ears. When I put on my 560s it now sounds a little nasally, lacking clarity and detail. I can't see myself needing or wanting to "upgrade" my headphones for a long time. Perhaps I can now focus on wasting my money on a proper speaker amp or hurting myself on a more dangerous motorcycle. Cheers.
PS as a little background, I have tried the PC38x and would recommend the 560s as I found them just as good for gaming but quite a bit better for music and movies/media. I bought the Sundara's as one of my best friends love them but returned them right away. The detail and clarity was great but there was absolutely no body to them to my ears. They sounded very clinical and analytical but mostly empty which are not necessary bad things but I required a lot more flavor and punch. It actually made me think that I wasn't geared towards being an "audiophile" as so many have high regard for this headphone including one of my best mates. As many know, sound is very personal but I can't see anyone disliking the Hifiman XS as they seem to excel in all the right areas. I do wish they looked a little more modern/cooler but they are fine design wise and I am here for the experience the headphone provides me.
I am convinced that there are four cloned copies of Randy The Cheap Audio Man. Three clones are examining recently received equipment. The 4th clone is in a charging station in the basement closet. The human Randy keeps them in rotation, does repairs while not building speaker cabinets, and proofreads the reviews before allowing the clone to go before camera.
Hi Randy, Thanks for the review. It was very interesting. I have the M1070's and I'm wondering how you think these compare? I really like the M1070's but wish they were a little lighter. PS Since your the Cheapaudioman you will probably appreciate that I bought the M1070's when they were on sale for $229.99 directly from Monoprice. I think it was quite a bargain.
Got the M1070 and after I got Edition XS. Love them both. Monoprice M1070 with velour pads are awesome for the price. More "in your face " sound. Edition XS is airier , faster decay and better separation and low bass. Both are great for their price ; iymt all ends to which song and which sonic enjoyment you prefer.
i own a pair of these and i actually find them rather sharp or bright not sure what the right term is. in some songs its not all that noticeable however i find most tracks from empire of the sun hard to listen to without toning down the frequencies above 16KHZ. other than that its fantastic. somewhat recessed mids, very detailed and it has bass, very deep bass
That sharpness or sibilance can be helped with better amp matching or EQ - or both, but after they play in for a while. If it's new most HFM planars are bright out of the box, but they calm down and smooth out after they play in for a few weeks to a month. As always, YMMV.
i was just listening to Human nature by Michael Jackson and i stopped halfway through because of that percussion instrument mostly present in the right channel. the highs just go straight through your skull and halfway through the song it gets really fatiguing. i ended up setting 20K to -10DB and correcting a little at 19k so the curve only significantly starts to drop at 18K. i know this is a little extreme but for this one i need it. on that note the problem may just be my ears since i can somehow hear up to 21K. as for my amp i am using a Soundblaster G6 in direct mode. i have had this thing for a few years now and its still great however it might be time for an upgrade. i have also tried an xduoo MT602 and that only seemed to make it worse. i came across this pair as i was looking for an endgame headphone around €500. decided to risk it because of its great bass response and detail. apart from the few songs that have a stronger upper treble, they sound fantastic. also movies are very immersive because of its sub bass
@@ctrang0458 If they're still new they "may" improve to be less peaky/bright in the treble after a period of time playing in (a few weeks to a month or so). IDK about the XS bc I've never heard it - but I do have experience in HFM's higher tiered HPs (Ananda, Arya v2+Stealth). Of course an amp that accentuates sharpness will have an impact on it being over the top bright too. I took the measure of buying a used discrete Class A amp for my setup bc of it's improved timbre and SQ vs the THX and IC chip amps that I tried. As always, YMMV.
@@Ezees23 alright im upgrading source gear in a few weeks. got a good deal on a D1SE and im still looking for a solid balanced amp. debating whether to get a Singxer SA-1 or a Topping A90. anyway il update once i have the new setup.
@@ctrang0458 Get the A90 if you want to keep the too sharp treble peaks and also gain "canned" (ie: not very realistic) sounding vocals. Get the Singxer Sa-1 (or Gustard H16) if you want better timbre, less harsh/peaky treble, vocal realism, and better spatial reproduction that discrete Class A provides. Plus they both have the same features as the A90 but cost either "nearly" the same or less. Keep in mind that I've not heard the XS, the Sa-1, or the H16 (I did try the A90 but quickly sent it back) - I'm going by my experiences currently owning the Ananda, the Arya Stealth, and the Gustard H20 (and formerly the Arya v2). Keep us posted.
Randy, still lovin the content keep it up. Shoot straight with me though. I currently have a Fidelio X2 and I am not unhappy at all. I use it for gaming & music & its the best headphone I've ever had. Here's my dilemma, My acquisition disorder has been telling me i need a dedicated music headphone & it should be a Planar set. I've had my eye on the Sundara (& now the XS) I am a music enthusiast, not an audiophile & not a headphone collector. 90% of my listening is done through a hi-fi set up consisting of a Yamaha CR620 with a pair of Bronze 100's. Will a planar set like this be lost on someone like me & will the experience be different enough from my X2's to see any benefit per dollar spent. Sorry for the long winded comment
I know you didn't ask me but I think you'd do well to get a budget DAC/amp stack like the Schiit Modi/Magni 3+ and plugging the XS's in for a listen. While I don't own the XS or the Modi, I do own the Anandas, the Arya Stealth, and the Magni 3+ (used at bedside). Judging by both my Ananda and Arya, you'll emjoy the XS because it's a "bigger" sound and has more clean bass than the Sundara (I used to own the Sundara too). My main setup is s Class A Gustard H20 amp and a SMSL Su-9 DAC - both balanced throughout. My HP setup is much better sounding and cost more than my desktop speaker setup, TV included.
Perhaps you could try the HE400SE. They are great value (Around $130) and would allow you to try the "planar" sound, abit of sub bass boost on them and they sound great! you can always sell them second hand to recoup. I would wager that they are better than the Fidelio X2's and you could appreciate the difference.
@@scottevans9311 If the 400se is anything like the 400i 2020 or previous versions, they don't really have good bass like their higher tiered stable mates, ie: Sundara, HFM's teardrop models, etc. It's why I suggested he try the XS with a cheaper Schiit stack. They're not too expensive and I think he'd get a better idea of how planars sound and what they can really do. He'd still need an amp stack, even if he with the 400se's.
@@Ezees23 Yes, similar. The 400SE does have a slightly darker and slightly more bass. With EQ though (obviously need an amp) I would very much disagree, the 400SE extends very low, fast, clear and loud. I would describe myself as abit of a bass head and they are sufficient (with EQ). Your option is a good option also, just much more expensive. Considering the price of the 400SE there isn't a whole lot to loose by trying them.
These are around £400 in UK on Amazon atm. Bargain. I’m so happy with the sound. I use the ifi go blu cabled to my iPhone and sounds perfect. The FiiO K5 Pro is not as good driving this as it is not powered.

No headband changes, no driver changes, no cup changes, nothing. The only change, which we felt so tiny we didn’t mention publicly, was that we changed the glue used on the PaliPads (which are what Sundara uses.) That’s it, the glue on the pads. We did this to enhance the durability of them as we found in warm conditions, they would over time slowly come apart and this new glue is better suited for such environments. Therefore, you do not need to worry about whether you have the “latest model” as there is only one. Sorry if the rumour mill that can be the internet gave you any concerns about the Sundara and should you have any other questions, do please feel free to email us anytime. Kind regards. Jeff"
Will these pair well with BiFrost/Jotenheim? I can’t consider other gear yet. Currently using Sundaras with the above. It may be my ears but something seems missing 🤷🏻♂️ maybe I should keep the Sundaras and change sac/amp 😆
Hey man really love the video but could you do me a favor? Can you do a three-way shootout of the XS, Sundaras, and the 4xx. I'm having a hard time with these headphones. I own all three but I would like to hear your take on them
I bought a pair and only listened for about 15 minutes. They sounded good. The issue I had was the fit. The clamping pressure is non existent for my head. They sit loose on my head and there is not a good seal particularly in the front upper portion of the ear pads. There is a gap there. I own the Anandas, Elegias, and the 58X Jubillees. These all seal and fit my head unlike the Edition XS. I really wanted that extra bass that’s not quite there on my Anandas. Unfortunately, I’m probably going to be returning them.
I bought these after watching about 237 reviews saying they're great. I tried them out using my ancient Yulong D100. And then I had to ask myself if my ears are wrong. I found them...underwhelming. There's no real body to them. And there's not a vast soundstage (which I had been hoping for). Vocals are pretty good but to hear them at a satisfying level I need to put the volume up to such a level that they become swamped. Maybe my dac was past it? I bought a Topping DX3+. (based on another 153 great reviews). No vast improvement if any. I A/B'd with my current headphones (ancient Philips Fidelio X2). I preferred the Philips. Much better body, nicer vocals, better soundstage. I'm seriously starting to doubt my own judgement here. I wanted to love the hifiman. Oh, and yeah, were these designed for a Gorilla's head?! Even at the minimum they're slightly too big for me. Yours, in slight exasperation...
Damn, where did these new cans come from?! I wish I knew these were coming... I just bought a pair of Sundara's three weeks ago (which I love!), but I would have definitely given these a thought!!

Should I buy Topping DX3 or iFi hip-dac2? Not sure what the difference would be, but on Amazon the DX3 is paired with Edition XS.
Do you know how these compare to HD 660s? Don't know which one to get, both are priced similarly in my region.

I'm sold based on this. Using Metallica and Zepp as a reference helped enormously.
Truly one of the most innovative companies in the market right now
Why can't I find a website for Sith audio?
Just got a pair of these. So far they are great, thanks for the heads up
Thanks for the fantastic review, based on it I bought my edition XS and never looked back. They are fantastic.

Dekoni Nuggets work wonders for those types of HiFiMan headbands. I have them on the Deva Pro and if you have a bigger head you can put Nuggets over the L and R indicators to alleviate any pressure spot on the top.
Solid review! I think you are the first American reviewer to review the Hifiman Edition XS.
Of course, now they bring out the XS. Right after I just bought the Sundara. Story of my life.
Sundaras are great. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
The xs are more versatile but the sundara are comfier and still excellent
Sundara is cheaper at least
I spent a lot of money on a pair of headphones once and felt guilty at the time. That was back in the 90's. But I still have, and enjoy, my HD-600's so it was money well spent!!!
dude i did the same in 2007....we made good choices my friend
I bought my HD-600 back in 1997 ... They are 24 years old now and still going strong, so that money was REALLY well spent ..
I got mine about three weeks ago and I think they are great! On the forums there has been a discussion about whether they need an absurd amount of power or not. I drive them both from an iPhone and from the L50 and I find them equally enjoyable. It would be great to have someone trying them on different amps!
I run them on the mt 602 and goddamm. They like a tube amp, bass is way punchier and still has lots of detail
@@rainydaygirlz sorry for the stupid question, but can I just use the avr hp jack? It seems fine to me. thanks
If you can drive them from an iphone it makes me think I can use my ES100 in single ended mode and get away with it.
150hrs break-in is what they recommend. I love my Edition XX and never understood the criticisms. The XS is better yet and I can hardly imagine better than XX already. Even my XX smoked the Sundara in my mind.
Seems reasonable
I own the XS and the Sundara. I'm loving the XS and was honestly never blown away by the Sundara.
@@cheapaudioman So you believe in burn in?
Where can I find this recommendation? And have you seen the scientific evidence against burn in?

Amen to these. Had mine for about a month now and they are fantastic. They're trading punches with my Modhouse T60RPs in a few areas, but excel in others. Love em.
how would you compare the soundstage to T60RPs? are they any wider?
@@Tuncakinguc I would put the XS as wider, but not by a ton. Sub-bass is definitely deeper and harder on the XS.
i got one for Christmas and i agree with every single word you said.I love em! 😀
I have the Ananda and it's just perfect! I'm curious to compare those two, but it seem that the XS is a cheaper version of the Ananda, mean the same sound for less money. Good for customers!
I also have the Ananda and the I think the same!:-)
Are you sure it's the same sound as the Ananda?

Hi from INDIA.

Just found this channel.. so refreshing to hear a down to earth review. Thanks dude

Perhaps a bit more verticality, but definitely not much deeper to my ear)
Of course if you don't have a powerful amp, or don't want one, this may be a better option as it should play really nicely with a lot of the lower power options and even portables on the market.
I was looking at the the HE560 ($229) and SMSL SP200 ($140). That’s $160 less than just the XS. I can put that towards a decent DAC.
@@jmm2226 yeah that should be a fine pairing.

But the XS compare it with the ananda and keep the one you like.
Hey @cheapaudioman,
I want to thank you for the recommendation.
I am using the headphone amp qudelix (approx. 100 bucks) to drive the sundara. I love it.
Shoot, at that price, I might have to get 2 rolls of Sith Audio cable management system. Never have had the chance to listen to Planer headphones. 😔

Great review! Ninja neodymium magnets are the Cobra Kai of magnets.

2 adding Ananda to existing Dac/Amp without dedicated Amp.
Xs + zen can amp costs me same as the Ananda alone.
Dangit Randy, I bought these after watching your review. I tend to prefer a warmer sound signature so I will try them with my Xduoo MT602's. I'm currently using the Sennheiser 560s for music and gaming. How do you think they will hold up in comparison? Cheers!
So how's the comparison to 560s?
@@citizenuk I haven't received them yet as I put in the order yesterday but I will update asap! Perhaps Mr. cheapaudioman can chime in?
@@derekd4349 he he returned my Sandaras as well, didnt like the sound signature as much.
I wish. If I did that it would probably be like the Michael Keeton movie, “Multiplicity” where the clones aren’t quite up to the sniff test
Hi Randy,
Thanks for the review.
Great review thank you
I almost bought Anandas but got a great deal on some LCD-Xs. At $500, these must be amazing.
i own a pair of these and i actually find them rather sharp or bright not sure what the right term is. in some songs its not all that noticeable however i find most tracks from empire of the sun hard to listen to without toning down the frequencies above 16KHZ. other than that its fantastic. somewhat recessed mids, very detailed and it has bass, very deep bass
Finally someone can accurately tell me if I'll like them in a way that I can understand... if Metallica sounds oomfy enough or not. lol Ty
Very good review 👍
The sundara does not have the sound signature most people who love theire X2s like, but the XS do
These are around £400 in UK on Amazon atm. Bargain. I’m so happy with the sound. I use the ifi go blu cabled to my iPhone and sounds perfect. The FiiO K5 Pro is not as good driving this as it is not powered.

" Hi there,
Thanks for contacting us. We have noticed online that there is chatter of a so-called “Stealth Revision” of the Sundara but I can assure you that it doesn’t exist.
Is there a good aftermarket brand for a cable for these? And what amp do you recommend for these? Under $500, hopefully.
How about for critical listening, recording/tracking? Is the tuning too "tweaked"?
Great. With Fiio M11 plus is enough or need something powerfull?
Hey man really love the video but could you do me a favor? Can you do a three-way shootout of the XS, Sundaras, and the 4xx. I'm having a hard time with these headphones. I own all three but I would like to hear your take on them
Review the Klipsch RB-81 II! It would amuse me. It would be cool to get your input.
Unfortunately, I’m probably going to be returning them.
quick fix is to bend the yokes slightly. bend in the part where the yokes connect. push so the yokes go a little higher. makes a big difference.
If you have one pair would you choose the xs or the 650? Paired with a k7. Thank you in advance.
Love the content, but this “it’s the BEST” until the next video comes out is a bit reductive.
Keep up the good work, be safe & be well.
Yeah. I get it. I’ll probably change the title soon.
What do you think of the m1070 compared to the edition xs?
Damn, where did these new cans come from?! I wish I knew these were coming... I just bought a pair of Sundara's three weeks ago (which I love!), but I would have definitely given these a thought!!
XS or Ananda Stealth (V3), many people say they sound very similar, but the bass is just more prominent on XS compared to Ananda.
Like the review 👍🏻
