Please keep your videos coming, your instruction with RV maintenance makes every task achievable, more importantly, entertaining and positive! And, your campgrounds/site reviews are spot on! Thank you!
We are picking up our new-to-us, very first camper next week and I am so thankful for people like you sharing your expertise! I have A LOT to learn and you have made it a little easier. Thank you!
This is the best video on awning cleaning that I've seen. I used it last year and it worked pretty well. This year, I tried something different and the results were outstanding. I used 30 seconds outdoor cleaner that I got at the Home Depot. I mixed a 1/2 gallon of product with 1/2 gallon of water. I sprayed in on the underneath side of my awning and rolled it up for 3 minutes. The label says to let it soak for 3 minutes. Then I extended the awning and sprayed it off with the hose. It looks beautiful and NO scrubbing.
I learned a lot from this at perfect timing, we really needed a clean on the bottom side. I found from some other RVers that a great product called 30 seconds....really does magic on the awnings with mold present. I sprayed this on and it nearly cleans itself. I made sure to rinse very well...and it's a beautiful result with less work.
Hi Jerry, We are new to owning an RV. We bought totaled travel trailer at auction 2 years ago and my husband spent last spring and summer making it look like new. Unfortunately the awning sat in the auction parking lot most of the winter it was there so it had a lot of mildew damage. I watched every video and read every article about how to clean a RV awning. I liked yours the most. I have probably watched this video 15 times. I followed your directions almost to a T last year. I only wish I would have followed them exactly. The bleach Dawn water mixture worked great leaving me with less mildew damage than I expected. The part of your directions that I didn't follow was concerning the aerospace protectant. I bought the protectant and the sprayer you recommended but I thought if applying the protectant on one side was good then applying it on both sides would be better. This was a terrible mistake. When I opened my awning last spring it had so much mold that I thought we were going to have to replace it. But I followed your step by step process and once again it worked. There's a little more mildew damage but it was a 80% improvement. I want to say thank you for taking the time to make this video. I'm wondering if there's a product or a way that people keep water from getting in to the awning over the winter? We live in Pittsburgh and get lots of rain and snow. Our awning does not seem to be watertight when it's closed up. Even one rain is enough that when I open the awning it is soaked. Help!
It’s tough to keep the wet from entering the awning. Even in warmer climates, rain seeps in. It’s just one of the spring maintenance items to clean every year. The small amount of bleach and a good scrub with a soft brush help works out the mildew and slows growth throughout the year.
Thank you for posting your video, Jerry, our trailer awning has been transformed! The murder of Crows camping in the trees above our trailer made a huge, ugly & smelly mess. We watched your video 2x and followed your guidance which worked like magic😁
I think I met you before at Timberlake 2019. I literally was just thinking about you and the knowledge you were sharing with me. 1st time camper. I always thank you and still do. Mis placed my 3-5pages note on camping you gave me but I always will appreciate your time and knowledge. Thank you again. Happy camping
Jerry, my husband, David and I watched your video the other day and today David went and cleaned our awning per your instructions. We are amazed at how well this worked! Our awning looks like new! Our camper as we call it is three years old and I don't think the awning has looked this good since we bought it. Thanks so much for all your tips and videos.
When I put the 303 on mine, I use a sponge and rubber gloves. I start with it out a foot or two so I can reach across it, and use a bowl to hold the 303, then dip and wipe. Move it out that much more and go over it on the new exposed until I get done and role it up without drying. It roles out smooth without that tacky sound after that and I think must somewhat treat the underside too. I use 303 inside and out and on the side walls and treads of my tires on my camper and vehicles. It does help with weather check. Thanks for all your videos.
That works pretty good. My wife and I use a 50/50 mix of water and rubbing alchohol. We used it for the first time on our pop up when we owned that. It had mildew on the canvas. Came right out with light scrubbing and never returned. We now use it on our awning for our travel trailer. Works great and doesn't harm the awning. Love your videos we actually started using happy camper because of your recommendations.
Jerry, YOU ROCK. I just used this method to clean my awning. It looks almost new. Last year I used a mold remover and it didn't work. This did! Again thank you for all your great advice and videos.
Wow I'm very impressed I spend over $20.00 on a product that didn't get my 1 year old awning clean from now on I will be using your method for cleaning my awning thank you so much for sharing
Hi Jerry, I'm looking at your screen panel looks very easy. now that I have a couple trailer not the 5th anymore.... Hey.. My awning is 17ft long so thanks for the information on the panel..
Jerry, I tried your awning cleaning technique today, and it works! The underside of our awning had some mildew stains, much like yours. I followed your instructions and my wife and I were pleasantly surprised at the improvement. Thanks so much!
Nice and comprehensive thank you. I’m thinking of cleaning a couple of algae bands on my house awning. I may try your method on just the necessary part, Mine rolls up and hence only a narrow bit is exposed during rest times.
Great video I followed your instructions cleaned the awning what a difference, I used a store bought product last year didn't clean nearly as well Thanks a Million.
Excellent video Jerry, very helpful as I just purchased a used motorhome and will be cleaning the awning just as you have done. The only thing I could say would be that you might want to protect the side of your coach as just about any cleaning agent can streak vinyl graphics. It happened to me many yrs ago on my new Holiday Rambler and the streaks were there until I sold it. I think buying just about the cheapest poly you could and then taping it next to the awning pullout and then along the entire edge of the awning so no chemicals hit the sides of the coach. Again, thanks for the great videos, I just subscribed so I'm looking forward to more of your videos.
Thank you!!! We pick up our 2012 new to us rig in a few weeks and the awning needs cleaning. This will really help before we hit the road. As always great tips!
I was literally just looking at the stains on my awning and was wondering if there was an easy way to clean it, so I thought I would come inside and check your videos out again (since the hot water tank clean out went so well for me). Again this was very helpful and exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the tips for us noobs!
I was told by a friend that Walmart Great Value Mold and Mildew remover would work and it did with our last camper. Spraying it on is tedious and you get lots of fumes so a mask is a good idea.
I used awning cleaner and a Mr. Clean magic eraser, ( you scrub it up and down then side to side) it was a messy job and you will get wet and dirty but it comes out really clean.
@@iLoveRVlife yes you did. We bought a new trailer and are selling our 2008. I'll be cleaning the awning this morning before people come and see it. Any recommendations on how to protect our new one that will never be opened because our deck has a cover? Someone suggested cutting a weeping tile pipe in half and covering it so debris doesn't get in.
Congrats on the new purchase. No matter what covers the rolled awning, moisture will seep in. Just the nature of the beast. But, you can minimize. These help amzn.to/3pD54Mi.
@@iLoveRVlife I cleaned my awning on our old trailer with a similar solution you suggested and it turned out pretty close to new!! It looks absolutely amazing!! It looks better than when we bought it. Haha....
Good video on cleaning the awning. You referred to Dometics instructions for the use of Bleach and Dawn dish soap which Dometic recommended. I researched and review the Dometic Awning manual and found no mention of using a brush in the instructions. I'm sure we can all agree that a little elbow grease always dose a good job. I also found a Dometic product. Dometic Premium RV Awning Cleaner and video. It appeared to work extremely well. I did ask for clarification as to what type of dirt and debris mediums were used. Iy clean up nice. No UV protectant just a cleaner.
They don’t mention a brush, but for bird poo and heavy stains, a little scrub action with a soft bristle brush does a good job on those tough spots. I always follow up with a good coat of 303 UV protector.
Great video Jerry! I've used the spray bottle products sold at our RV center as "RV Awning Cleaner" with mixed results. Not only is it expensive, but does not work as good as your bleach and Dawn method. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips with all of us. You have a great TH-cam channel!
Thanks so much James. Really glad we could help. I too tried several "out if the box" products. This has always worked, sometimes with less effort. Jerry...
Thanks. I like Meguiar's M43 Marine/RV Boat Wash and a soft bristle scrub brush. It’s easy on the finish and strip wax off sides as it runs off. Be careful gets slippery up there. Also use on the sides. Leaves a nice finish.
Hi Jerry, Great video! I am also encountering the same issues with mold and will give this a go. Silly question, have you cleaned your awnings since installing you Vista Shade? I installed mine after seeing your installation video. I am wondering if I should remove mine completely or if the bleach/dawn solution would harm the shade material? What are your thoughts? Thanks!
It should not. It’s a diluted solution and it’s on the awning for a short period. I’ve treated mine and don’t see any changes in the fabric. I also spray 303 UV protectant amzn.to/3F3buLN on the awning twice a year that will extend the life.
@@iLoveRVlife I have the spray in my cart now, hopefully you will see a sale in a few days. Hopefully you got the credit for my Vista Shades purchases also. Thanks, Rich
Thank you so much for this video! This worked great on my awning and I did not get nearly as wet as the last time I tried to clean it using a power washer. Your technique is simple and actually worked great! Thank you so much for the recommendation to use the 303 Aerospace UV Protection spray...my awning looks so much better! I highly recommend this technique using the chemical sprayer and RV brush.
This is so good! I was wondering what to do with those lines on my awning. Probably could use some safety googles and maybe longer arm sleeves if there's a bleach sensitivity. Thanks for the tips!!
I don’t know of any properties in 303 to prevent mildew. The small amount of bleach and letting it stay on the awning for the short period helps kill it. Damp and rolled up awning for periods of time is hard to prevent, but a good cleaning once or twice a year keeps its from becoming a nasty mess.
My recipe - one garden sprayer, one part bleach, five parts water. Rinse awning, soak with bleach water solution, roll up awning while wet, wait 30 minutes, open awning and rinse liberally with clean water. Very little scrubbing required afterward for the random bird poop, etc. Been doing it once or twice a year for years. Works amazingly well and doesn't damage the awning.
Great video, I enjoy all your videos :) I spray the 303 on the bottom of the awning along with the top and it seems to help in keeping the mold from building up as fast under the awning (I wash under the awning with car soap every month and it seems to be easier to keep clean this way)
Another suggestion when using this technique is to protect yourself especially if you're sensitive to chemicals. Wear a long sleeve shirt, disposable latex or nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a disposable mask (everybody uses them these days) You don't want bleach droplets in your eyes, mouth, or nose. Also, bleach can harm plant life near your work area so wet down your bushes, flower beds, etc. before you start spraying bleach on your awning. When you are all finished with your project, rinse down your plant life once more.
I only have ONE question...do they make awnings that are NOT white on the bottom. Okay, follow up question...if not WHY? lol I started washing my RV today and only got about 1/2 done before I was ready for bed. Purchased used so the awning wasn't very clean to start and I have yet to really give it a good scrubbing. Thank you for the tips, I'll be using them in the future when I recover. :)
Good question about the awning. Guess it’s to make it brighter? We are getting ready to leave in a few days for 5 months. Started cleaning today at Noon. Washed roof, entire 5th wheel, awning and the truck by 5. Was washing everything like my pants were on fire. Thank goodness for Advil.
I put a large cap full of Tide with oxi in a 5 gallon bucket of water turned mine 100% white again..used a white sponge mop..scrubbed with it....rinsed thoroughly. Took 20 minutes..
Hi Jerry. Been wincing at my awning lately so needed to run across your video on this ~ thx! Do you think the bleach on a black awning would be a problem at all?
Hi Jerry, I am fairly new to your channel and have enjoyed watching dozens of them. Although I Subscribed and liked dozens of your videos so far, I haven't made written any comments. But I do have a question about this one cleaning your awning. You did a great job and the results were amazing - I thought for sure those moldy streaks underneath were going to be permanently stained...but your bleach/Dawn mixture did REALLY GOOD! I wonder...do you think treating it with OxyClean would be safer than the bleach (in order to avoid any caustic damage that the bleach may cause)? Even though you and the Dometic recommendations got great results and it worked like a charm, I just wanted to know your experienced thoughts about using OxyClean solution and sprayed on with your professional sprayer bottle???
So glad you found the channel helpful. I would image OxyClean, an oxygen bleach, would work too. As far as the chlorine bleach, it's a small amount and not something left on for a long period of time. It's main purpose is to kill the mold spore (that period of time with the awning rolled up) and Dawn is the cleaning agent. I may give Oxyclean a try next cleaning and see how it works.
@@iLoveRVlife Thanks for the reply Jerry. Yes I noticed you didn't leave it on too long but I was still skeptical about the caustic nature of actual 'bleach'. I agree it still worked out REALLY GOOD with short time. Ok, yes we will look forward to next time, if you end up trying the Oxyclean. Keep up the great work and thank you for taking the time to make/share your videos.
@@hummer4u2nv11I don't believe that a tablespoon of bleach and a tablespoon of dawn detergent mixed with a gallon of water is going to caustic nature not with al the water he used rinsing off the awning. Your acting like its a natural emergency over a damn tablespoon of bleach used with maybe 30 gallons of water give the man a break.
Find a Jayco dealer ghey have a killer pink soap ,or your can use tide soap brush it on roll it up leava for a while ? Depends on how gruddie it is ,then scrub, also 303 makes several chemicals ,check them out USE THE STUFF, ive been at it since 1974 ,my awnings are 20 years old 🤗🤗🤗🤗retired RV mechanic also🤑
Just gave this a try on my rv awning. Didn't do much to clean off the staining on the underside of my awning. Any other tips for cleaning deep stains? Thanks.
Once in while we get a leaf or some crud that gets rolled up in the awning and creates a deep stain. Wet and give it a light scrub with a Magic Erasure. Should clean up the rougher spots.
Thanks Gary. It may help a little with the decals. My silver decals have cracked and there was little I could do to prevent. Suspect it was something to do with the type of compound used to make the silver. The others, white, black and brown solids have held up well.
I love RV Life nice video I've used this method also but will try adding the dawn detergent instead of liquid tide. Oh! I might better be careful cause it could cause a caustic nature major problem LOL.
Hi Jerry. This isn't a favorite job of mine either, however, the results make the effort worth it. I especially liked the tip about spraying the 303 protectant on the top of the awning. Do you have a video on how you clean the slide toppers? If not, could you create one? Thanks!
Hi Peter. 303 is amazing stuff. Use on the awning, slide toppers, rubber seals around the sides and the tires. Makes a difference over time. The slide toppers are the same as the awning. Just reverse the process cleaning the top vs. the bottom.
Mold Armor connect to garden hose wet then apply follow with rinse no scrubbing unless you have very bad mold or stain cost $9.98 at home Depot or lowes
Not mentioned here, but there is 303 and 303 for specifically for fabric. Do not use "303 Fabric Guard" on other items where regular "303 Marine Aerospace Protectant" is used (tires, plastic, vinyls, rubber) as it will leave a oily residue which is extremely difficult to remove, but it is formulated for fabric use. This oily residue is what helps restore the waterproof qualities of the fabric, regular 303 Marine will not restore beading of water on the fabric and but will help UV damage.
It has. On some of the more difficult stains, I’ve touched up that spot with a Magic Eraser. Make sure too rinse the spot after touch up. These things contain some harsh chemicals.
Agree. If the pressure washer has a setting to dial down the PSI, the. A little safer. Best to squirt, roll up, gentle scrub and rinse with a water hose.
Could be an issue. I keep the solution and brush ahead of my face plus a cap. Would be wise if concerned with getting solution in eyes. Thanks for sharing.
Great video!! Would it be easier when doing the top of the awning if you roll it up about half way so you don’t need to stretch so far, then roll the rest out to do the lower half? Just seems to me to be easier and safer. Thanks for the videos, keep them coming!!

Thanks a bunch Richard. We appreciate you watching our channel and visiting ilovervlife.com for you RV Accessories. Safe travels.
Thanks much Brian. Easy, quick, less than an hour and it’s squeaky clean. Great to hear you had positive results. Appreciate the comment.
This is so good! I was wondering what to do with those lines on my awning. Probably could use some safety googles and maybe longer arm sleeves if there's a bleach sensitivity. Thanks for the tips!!
Would using the 303 on the bottom help mitigate the mildew?
I don’t know of any properties in 303 to prevent mildew. The small amount of bleach and letting it stay on the awning for the short period helps kill it. Damp and rolled up awning for periods of time is hard to prevent, but a good cleaning once or twice a year keeps its from becoming a nasty mess.
Next time try using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser mop. Mine was worst and it looks like new now. Great tip on the 303!
Hi Edward. Those Magic Erasers are something. If used, may want be careful how hard you rub the fabric. Glad we could share the 303 tip. Jerry...
Thanks enjoy all your great trips and great advice keep safe
Thanks much Steven. Glad to help. Jerry....
That will do it.
Your method worked great!
Thanks much. Great to hear you had good results too.
Great video, I enjoy all your videos :) I spray the 303 on the bottom of the awning along with the top and it seems to help in keeping the mold from building up as fast under the awning (I wash under the awning with car soap every month and it seems to be easier to keep clean this way)
Great tip.
This is a diluted solution, but a very good tip.
Thank you for this video! I will do my awning now! I do use the 303 on everything even the RV itself and its graphics. Love the stuff
Thanks for the kind comment. Glad to help. Hope the awning turns our great! Jerry....
I'm sure it will. I bought some stuff from camping world and didn't work much. Alli wants me to go out there and get it done now LOL
To funny Church! I've tried some of those to with similar results. This is inexpensive and works. Downside, you're going to get wet! Jerry...
I Love RV Life Right now getting wet doesn’t sound too bad lol. Florida in August feels like about 115 degrees outside! :-)
I put a large cap full of Tide with oxi in a 5 gallon bucket of water turned mine 100% white again..used a white sponge mop..scrubbed with it....rinsed thoroughly. Took 20 minutes..
thanks for the tip.
i would suggest that you wear some safety glasses we only get one pair of eyes, did the job well, good job
Thanks
Awesome job
Thanks Greg.
Hi Jerry. Been wincing at my awning lately so needed to run across your video on this ~ thx! Do you think the bleach on a black awning would be a problem at all?
It’s a small amount and diluted. Plus it’s only on for a short period of time. Shouldn’t cause any problems.
Great video, getting ready to do mine. Great info.
Thanks a bunch David.
Great video!!
Thanks.
Awesome how-to video!!
Thanks much Carla. Jerry....
thank you Jerry🐈🐺👍✌
Glad to help Robert!
Using a pressure washer on low with the wide spray is easier on your neck than doing any scrubbing. Spray and rinse.
Thanks.
Find a Jayco dealer ghey have a killer pink soap ,or your can use tide soap brush it on roll it up leava for a while ? Depends on how gruddie it is ,then scrub, also 303 makes several chemicals ,check them out USE THE STUFF, ive been at it since 1974 ,my awnings are 20 years old 🤗🤗🤗🤗retired RV mechanic also🤑
Thanks
Thanks again Jerry
You bet!
On my list! Keeps growing 😊
Ah. The joys of RV life :)
Synthetic clothes will not be effected by bleach! Like the moisture wicking shirts etc. can I use 303 on the roof of the rv?
You can.
Good job, really enjoy your videos!
Thanks Susan.
Thanks so much for the info. That was great.
So glad we could help. Jerry...
@@iLoveRVlife okay, thanks for the tip
Nice I am glad I found you
Me too Kelly. Hope you find the channel helpful.
Hello sir great vid! I was wondering if this 303 is used for the entire RV surface? Thanks and keep up the great vids!!!
Thanks Gary. It wouldn’t. Can leave finish with a milky shade depending on the what’s on the surface.
@@iLoveRVlife I think I read where some people are using it in the decals only. I really appreciate your expertise in the RV field. Thank you again!
Thanks Gary. It may help a little with the decals. My silver decals have cracked and there was little I could do to prevent. Suspect it was something to do with the type of compound used to make the silver. The others, white, black and brown solids have held up well.
@@iLoveRVlife thank you again for the reply… I will continue to get tips and great advice from your channel.🇺🇸
Nice job! Hard work, but we'll worth it!
Thanks David.
I love RV Life nice video I've used this method also but will try adding the dawn detergent instead of liquid tide. Oh! I might better be careful cause it could cause a caustic nature major problem LOL.
It’s very little of both in a gallon of water. Understand the concern of mixing bleach and ammonia. Using this outdoors, I’ve never had an issue.
@@iLoveRVlife Agreed 100 0/0 percent was picking at a comment made by someone being concerned it could be caustic.
Would using one of the smaller spray bottles that hooks to your house with one tsp instead of one T work with the Dawn and bleach in it?
Not sure Dee. Could try it. We’ve used this process for some time and always had good results regardless of how much yucky stuff is own the awning.
Great information!
Thanks Chrystal.
Just reverse the process cleaning the top vs. the bottom.
I will be buying a RV later on this year. Should I go ahead and treat the awning with the 303?
Hi Sally. I would. Even though the awning is new, sun damage starts day one. Just a few dollars spent will extend the life of your awning. Jerry....
We use a magic eraser mop Its awesome
I’ve used the sponge for hard to remove stains.
What about spraying rv rubber roof with 303
Will help. There are better conditioners specifically designed for rubber roofs.
I wonder how much it takes of the 303 aero space protectant per application? would 32oz be enough?
Not much at all. Just a light spray and spread. I have been using a spray bottle for a couple of years and still have about 1/2 left.
Thanks for the video….
Glad to share Tony.
Does this work on pine needle stains
It has. On some of the more difficult stains, I’ve touched up that spot with a Magic Eraser. Make sure too rinse the spot after touch up. These things contain some harsh chemicals.
Pressure washing is a bad idea! I just shot a couple pin holes in my awning!☹️
Agree. If the pressure washer has a setting to dial down the PSI, the. A little safer. Best to squirt, roll up, gentle scrub and rinse with a water hose.
Bleach rolling down my sidewalls?...,will I ruin my paint????
It’s highly deleted. Just rinse it off.
Wow! No safety glasses? It does look better !
Careful and a good hat.
What kind of fire hose were you using?lol
Funny Jeff. Looks like one doesn’t it? It was just a spray attachment I found somewhere.
Jerry can 303 be used on the rubber roof?
It can. Use the one that is safe for plastic and rubber. Here's an example amzn.to/2FcQUdU
Shouldn’t you encourage wearing goggles to keep bleach and soap out of your eyes? Great info..... thank you!,
Could be an issue.
Thanks Phil that's an option. I just wanted to get it done in one shot.
@Philz570 1 Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the lower part come out first and the part you have to stretch for come out last?
It does!
