He’s a man who creates a real family atmosphere wherever he coaches. He has won trophies at Espanyol and PSG as a player, but he’s now best known as a top-class manager with spells at Espanyol and Southampton before he took Tottenham to finals and their best league finish in 25 years, playing football as effective as it was impressive.
Mauricio Roberto Pochettino born 2 March 1972, is an Argentine professional football manager and former player. He was most recently the head coach of Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain.
Pochettino played as a central defender and began his career in 1989 with Primera División club Newell's Old Boys, winning a league title and finishing as runner-up in the 1992 Copa Libertadores. In 1994, he transferred to newly-promoted La Liga club Espanyol, helping establish their top-flight status and won the 2000 Copa del Rey, their first trophy in 60 years. In 2001, he joined Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain, and had a stint with Bordeaux, before returning to Espanyol in 2004, winning another Copa del Rey in 2006. Pochettino was capped 20 times for the Argentina national team and played at the 1999 Copa América and 2002 FIFA World Cup.
After retiring as a player, Pochettino began his managerial career at Espanyol in 2009. He left the club in 2012 after poor results and financial disputes. In 2013, he was appointed at Premier League club Southampton, leading them to an eighth-place finish that season - equalling their highest ever Premier League finish. He signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 2014 and finished as league runner-up in the 2016-17 season and UEFA Champions League finalist in 2019. He was dismissed after a string of poor results, and in 2021, joined Paris Saint-Germain, where he won Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France.

Watching this as a Chelsea fan hoping he is the answer for the future.
i think he will. Todd stitched Potter up with the amount of players and GP was too nice. Poch will put his foot down when needed, which is what a lot of the players needed.

How had this not blown up? Yous need a little bit of marketing and these will blow up. Some feedback though: Get rid of the BS "how do you define high performance" question at the start, we wonna hear real stories from Poch, not more BS media questions that draw standard "professional" responses that we see all the time

It's a good question. Maybe the idea of what high performance is, is the same for a lot of high performers.

I agree about this "high performance" thing. You don't need to ask Poch about this. It sounds like you are trying to sell something. Ask open questions and let the subject talk.

I can't believe I haven't found this podcast before. I love this idea of just having long hour conversations with these managers. Simple interview formats found in media just don't get the chance to get in their head like this. However, I'd love to hear more of the questions we don't hear in normal interviews. I'm not a player/manager and don't intend on being so, but I am fascinated by what these managers do beyond the more abstract concepts like mental attitude, discipline, work rate, etc. It'd be interesting to hear more of what makes him different, since most of these great managers share this same mentality of the requirements of discipline, ambition, etc.

Brilliant content - maybe try getting Eddie Howe after the dust surrounding his departure has settled a bit. Taking a team from League Two to 5 years in the Premier League is literally the definition of high performance!

Poch being asked questions in analogue and answering in digital. He is a very clever emotionally intelligent guy, shame the interviewers don't seem to be.
Great concept, Terrible conducted interview. The rigid talking points and leading questions take away the natural flow of the conversation.
Let the man express himself without trying to lead the conversation towards answers that you want to "hear" because that's how you believe someone should think about it.
Maybe Pochettino doesn't move as quickly from a defeat as you would want him to do. Perhaps he's capable of focusing on the next game while still lamenting and analysing the previous one. Because it helps him prepare for the future in some way.
We all know his a very emotional leader and seem to have a different way of handling defeats and managing/operating his team that differs from the framework you seem to expect based on your talking points.
Best manager we ever had. Disgraceful that after 1 bad period in 6 years Levy bailed because spurs is “just a business to him.”

It's just disgusting how the boards never backed him at all, He is just class we love him. Without proper backing, he went on 2 years without transfer and brought us to the UCL final that no one ever expected including myself. His sacking brought me to tears, I truly wish our club strives like how he does

Just remembering that Spurs was 14th in the league and lost 7-2 to Bayern before Mauricio was sacked
couldn't agree more. The lack of loyalty shown by the board, after all he did for the club, made me dislike my own football club. Best manager we've ever had, had us punching above our weight for years

@@therunningsloth6915 This argument is so fucking stupid. Eddie Howe didn't win anything (unless you think winning first place in lower leagues count), but look how respected he is. He turned us a mainstay in the CL and we've only slipped up this season. Silverware isn't an indicator of progress.
@@weirskii silverware is the only sign of progress that will be remembered. Nobody remembers runners up and spurs are the king of underachievers they should of had at least 1 title with the squad they had.

Love this podcast. Have met Damian on a couple of occasions and love his thinking. As a Spurs fan it hurts my soul that Mauricio isn't at Tottenham anymore. I loved what he created at Spurs, and believe that with investment he would have won trophies.

It's so interesting to listen to managers talk about their management styles. Pochettino says he wants what's best for the players while Ole says he wants the players to feel important. Pochettino's style definitely feels more personal and Ole probably inherited the team spirit from Sir Alex

Very late to this party, but I concur. Could I miss him anymore? It sounds crazy, but I would rather have him back and entertain to the final of the CL than grind our way to a league cup. I believe we would be successful if he returned Come back Mopo.

OH!!!!!!!! How I wish He was still manager of my beloved Spurs. I Loved everything about his time at Tottenham. I Loved him as a human being and how he got Spurs to play football. I have supported Tottenham since 1964 and after Sir Bill Nick and Keith Burkinshaw, Poch is my favourite manager. I hope one day soon he returns to my beloved club. As always 'Audare Est Facere'
The football, along with results, soured many months before he was sacked. The beautiful football people attribute to him was missing in the last season and a half. Spurs were very poor in that time, and very lucky to make a Champions League final. Despite this, so many people romanticise his time at the club as only good. He did well for a number of seasons, but his time was rightly brought to an end, things were not improving. The fans really need to move on.

You can still feel the pain of the champions league final. I would have loved to hear him talk about not playing Moura after his heroics in getting them there. That for me was the turning point and where his meritocratic ethos came into question. Healing time, but should be so proud. Great man and Jesus too

Very interested in how Poch uses handshakes and the like to assess the personal energy of players and other staff at the football club. I used a variation of this technique when consulting on customer satisfaction for clients in the Arabian Gulf.

he's in contract with a big corporation (sky, bt, bein...), saying things that are out of the ordinary and jumping from topic to topic is REAL conversation which those pricks can't do cuz of PR and their image. I love watching these kinds of interviews but I never expect anything crazy

So frustrating when Pochettino goes in to the point of closing the chapter with Tottenham after the Champions League Final and starting a new project, you disrupt the man and dive in to some ideological, philosophical question. This completely killed the flow and opportunity to get some real insight in to his last months at Spurs. Interview conducting skills need massive improvement but the concept of this podcast is great.
I am Argentinean and I would like to attempt to condense what Pochettino is trying to explain in this interview. I can see that Pochettino mentions things that are not obvious for the British viewer.
The arrival of Bielsa and Griffa at 02:00 in the night to see his legs: That is a sort of “vetting”, in the old English sense, when a vet will painstankly examine a horse for fitness prior to a race. The time at night is circumstancial, no matters.
Why Bielsa and Griffa went to his house to see his legs and home environment?
They wanted to see his legs and home to gauge is nutritional background. Sounds stupid? Well, you get it for granted in Britain, but in Argentina unfortunately is not the case. In Argentina, specially in the province where Pochettino is from, there are 1.7 cow for every human. There is far more cattle than humans, yet you can’t take for granted that everybody has a family or clinical history of good nutrition for fitness at 14 years to the clubs reserve division.
That’s why they went to see his legs, as weird as might sound to you British viewers. That visit in that way at night was a sort of rudimentary and primitive bone-densitometry assessment, but that’s how things still work in paradoxical Argentina.
Further into the interview he then tries to explain that Bielsa and Griffa were ahead of their times, because they weren’t scouting players on the sole basis of skills on the pitch, but they were incorporating an holistic approach to scouting players, they were interested in the long run, in the long term objectives and so they didn’t just want a player based on his footy skills, but also taken into consideration his muskulo-esqueletal foundation; to put it in a nutshell.
This man, ladies and gentlemen, is a legend.

i didnt think he'd come to Chelsea, i wasnt too into football when he coached Totenham so i don't have an impression on him, but from what i hear here, he sounds like a manager that id tell Todd Boehly not to sack regardless of the results we get while he manages us. i get the impression he is a builder and can build something amazing with us

A great podcast, but you had so many possibilities to dig just a tad deeper on many of the specific games/situations that Poch brought up himself, such as the CL final, the closed chapter after the final (and the horrid season thereafter), and instead you chose to veer off to philosophical or ideological questions. Missed the mark there.
Yeah, appreciate the podcast but the questions in this episode could be asked in a second interview. The time was ripe here to get spurs info

I know it would never happen because Mauricio knows he is a leader, but if he humbled himself and joined the coaching staff at Spurs would be a dream. Mourinho and Pochettino sitting down and talking tactics would probably create the best Spurs team ever.
I think the whole approach of the interviewers is pretty naive - pre-arranged categories and theories which are then trotted out. Very hierarchical assumptions about leadership, It goes on and on. Thank God Mauricio was patient enough and clever enough to step round their clumsy questions, and provide some interesting answers.

Football is about players' feelings says Pochettino, but what he's trying to say is that it's about HUMAN PERCEPTION, if you have it in great fine tune, then is when you get paid like Pochettino, Bielsa, Mourinho, Guardiola, etc.
The only mistake Poch made was playing an unfit Kane in the Champions League final instead of Lucas Moura. A classic case of a player being bigger than the club. To be dropped after scoring a hatrick against Ajax must’ve been devastating. And anyone who ends up with Lucas will see the best of him given game time.
