    The 4-blade should perform better in each of your scenarios versus the 3-blade. It is common practice to drop pitch swapping to the 4-blade. Glad you got it figured out.

    Captain, again another great video. Your information and honesty goes along way. Many of us rather older or newer owners find your videos a treasure. I jave learned a lot and I must say not many on TH-cam would share this kind of information. Your insight, where to buy these items how to beware of what you are doing. I have watched tons of videos but yours share what the true boat owner needs and sometimes don't need to have a great experience. My husband and I are truly Blessed when we found your videos. You expresse the facts of boat ownership very well and those of us who are relearning the art again you have saved us so much more than money . Your Wise Advice is Priceless.     Captain I am happy you made this video because a lot of people been telling me to go a 4 blade I have a 3 blade on my boat now I am just going to stick with the same propeller I have now the 3 blade. Thank you for the update

    Tip for changing props or hardware on a motor while on the water. Put an umbrella upside down under the motor and just tie the handle to the transom or lower unit.

    You might want to consider calculating your prop slip once you get the lower pitched prop on. I was finally able to get mine to 7% prop slip at WOT, and 10% at 4,000 rpm, which is about as good as you can ask for. I record my speed at each 1,000 rpm interval all the way up to WOT, then use the prop slip calculation to calculate your prop slip. The less prop slip you have the more efficient your outboard will be. Just a suggestion of something you could check.

    Why not show to stats for the 4 blade prop like you did with the 3 blade prop?

    Love your content man, gives me motivation to go work on my boat... Last night after watching your auto pilot install and test I went out and rewired my GPS power, 12v power port, and led light system power supply.       @@OutOnTheReef I didn't realize you were in central Florida, I thought south. either way nice to meet you! In just 2 months since my purchase it has the 03 merc 3.0 w alpha one Gen 2, I did the impeller, anodes, new water intake hose since the old one had some hose bib cut into it and was leaking right on the drive shaft, I've acid washed it and started compounding and waxing, new blower (old had loud bearings), new vent grates, new vent lines, new deck drain lines, new sunpad shocks, put a shock on the glovebox, new opt7 rgbw led light system.. I have been putting off cutting my first holes for new speakers, I have all new factory mirror domed decal stickers and pin stripes to install and a new fuel pump I should install because I'm seeing some gas in the sight line. I've never been a mechanic and more of a tech guy but I'm making it work. ..i also just had an upholstery guy alter my mooring cover so my Bimini can stow up... I'm a details guy and just hope I don't end up with any big motor issues after I get her all dialed in, I really want to do some intercoastal and river run trips this summer with my wife and 10 year old, vhf also on the must list so we stay connected.

    Love the videos from Australia!
    I've had the exact same engine, on a Haines Signature 580. 5.8meter fiberglass sports boat, the perfect propeller ended up being a 14 1/4 diameter, 18 pitch.
    My new boat, a 25foot pilot house, has twin 175 yamahas, same engine as yours, de-rated power, and I have 3 blade 14 1/4 17 pitch. It's a very heavy boat, but perfectly propped.
    15 inch propeller is way too big for the 2.8 4cyclinder. Consider reducing diameter to 14 1/4 and increasing pitch to 17. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

      Nah. You didn't look up his current 3 blade. It's 14 1/2 X 15. I wouldn't drop the diameter any with him carrying that much weight. It will increase the slip beyond reasonable due to the small diameter. Hmm, just ran the calc. He's only at 6% with the 3 blade 15 pitch so he has some room. You think I should tell him if he could gets those rpm's up to 6000 he could run 43mph?? No, I think he's trying to squeeze blood from a turnip. He's not going to get much better than he already is. Ideally he should drop the pitch of the 3 blade but not sure it's worth the expense. He just has an unusual combination of weight and power.

    I wish I could convince you to put a Permatrim on your motor. Yes, you have demonstrated the stern lift advantage and hole shot advantage of a 4 blade but also the need to change the size to get the RPM’s up. Parker’s are ass heavy and the Permatrim will provide more stern lift than a 4 blade, JMO. I’ve ran mine for 5 years now with the heavy ass older F225 on the back so I have first hand experience running it with and without a Permatrim. I also changed out the 12”x12” trim tabs with 12x18” tabs. Between the 2 mods I can hold plane at around 13 MPH, with the ability to stuff the bow down in a head sea chop. It’s made a huge difference in the capabilities of the boat. At high speed the Permatrim also eliminated the tendency for mine to porpose and have to drop the trim or drop the tabs to stop it. It also helped out with slow speed wandering and it tracks better. Out of all the mods that I’ve done, the Permatrim was one of the easiest, cheapest and most beneficial mods. It’s right up there with the Bimini and the AC😎. Just for another data point, I have the stock 15x17 3 blade and my WOT is 6K to 6,100 RPM’s and 42mph.

    *** Not a valid test *** 4 Blade will out perform a 3 blade in every situation "EXCEPT" top end speed on a "LIGHT WEIGHT BOAT". Why... because a 4 blade prop has less slippage! In a lightly loaded boat with adequate power a 3 blade is a good choice. In a racing boat you will most often see 2 blade props used. Why... because slippage is not an issue and reduced prop surface drag is preferred. In a heavily loaded boat with a 3 blade prop, it is not uncommon to see 15 precent or more slippage. Slippage will allow a 3 blade to achieve higher RPMs (as in this video), but at lower fuel effeciency. By going with the correct 4 blade prop in a heavily loaded boat, (typically 2 degrees less pitch) you will notice a dramatically improved hole shot, ability to plane at a lower speed and improve gas mileage (typically around 5% to 10% better), with little or no loss in speed. Why... reduced slippage!
    Out On The Reef, please do this test again and include a 4 blade prop with 2 degrees less pitch..

    They the sharrow prop..is New design for boats like yours and minds.. I have a 97 pilot house may craft.. With A 200 E Tech.wow.. It performs outstanding hands down..

      Woah. You actually have a Sharrow and are running it? You may be the first recreational customer in the world. Please post your test results here and on thehulltruth.com. You will get razed for the prop being worth more than the boat but just ignore the static.

    Solas has a 'prop finder' on their website that takes into account the weight of the boat and everything on it, the boat length, what type of boat, engine mfg and HP, if you fill in all the information it will give you an accurate propellers that fit your info and it will estimate the correct pitch for each propeller on the list. As the weight of the boat increases the pitch has to decrease to keep the RPM's in the correct range.

    The 4-blade prop will provide more transom lift. Since they don’t make a 4-blade prop with less pitch, perhaps talk to a quality prop shop or perhaps the prop manufacturer to see if the 4-blade prop you gave can be adjusted. Another great video! Thanks!

    U can also get the blades cupped more on any prop it will take away the cavitation

    Oh no that stinks. I was hoping I was wrong. 15 pitch is usually the cutoff in the bigger 100+ hp props. Looked at the Solas and Michigan where catalogs. Nothing smaller. Hopefully oem or Mercury makes one. If not. The lower gear case ratio needs to be changed. Or add 50+. Hp. Thanks for the vid.

    Hello Captain, I have been following you for quite some time now and I finally got up the nerve to make the crossing to Bimini. I have been a boater for over thirty years. Ten years in Maryland and past 20 years in the Tampa Bay area. Bahamas is opening up slowly and I am looking forward to cross to Bimini following a couple of other boats. Since we are all first timers, I was wondering if you could give us some pointers like which marina to drop our boats into the water and where to park our trailers and trucks for safe keeping. I would really appreciate the info. By the way, I re-powered my Glacier Bay 27ft. last year with twin Suzuki 150's. And I had the same problem with the four-blade props. Once fueled up and loaded the three-blade prop performs much better. I thought it was because I had twin hulls. Now I see that the same is true for mono hull boats also.       That is awesome that you want to do the cross and you will love it captain a marina that I can recommend you will be Crandon Marina at Biscayne Bay they have security there often I seen them there I think it's $16 per day to park your boat there and you can pay online so if you are in the Bahamas and you want to stay an extra day you can pay online through an app
      And when you arrive to the Bahamas you go to big game Marina and I'll help you there they're really good on helping you dock your boat.
      And you sound like you have a very good boat captain with twin engines and twin haul that is awesome for the waves.

Its such a let down because that 4 blade stainless prop is such a thing of beauty its hard to look at it and imagine it not being better..lol. So I guess for now its back to the original 3 blade and go fishing for a while?

      Captain for watching and yes this cooler I got it because it was more comical than the yeti coolers
      A hole size over 5 to 6 days it depends how many times you open it now it's a little heavy because it has thick walls and I have the link in the description below just look at it and you'll find it through the list but I can tell you is that I really like mine and the price was just right

    I do know that a 4 blade will work better for shallower waters,low end take off, and should do better for ocean waves!

      @@OutOnTheReef i have a 20x6 flat bottom aluminum boat with max rated hp on it and am currently running a 3x14.5x21pitch prop the prop is worn out. Gas mileage got horrible, along with prop being dinged up.

    Hola Capitan ! Como te dije tengo exactamente el mismo Yamaha 200 mi barco tiene el mismo peso que el tuyo.
    Tengo montado la hélice Yamaha Reliance 14.5 x 14 y llego con full combustible y poca carga a 6000 RPM que me parece un poco alto.
    Ya voy a probar la hélice 14.5 x 15 para que baje RPM un poco . También tengo una 15.25 x 15 en Aluminio para probar.

    Hey Cap! Are you able to return or exchange that 4 blade? I bought one online years ago and the company was called PropMD. They asked me many questions about my boat and how I use it and what I wanted to accomplish. They sent me the perfect prop on the first try but had it not worked I could have exchanged it.

    Figure out what your slip is and go from there. Have you gone to the llama have a website they can help you with your prop selection Based on all the information you can give them. You still have to get those RPMs up

    4 blade prop= torque 3 blade= speed... 4 blade props are more for inshore shallow running boat that need a shallow water hull shot. You’ll loose speed on the top end but will be able to get up on plane quicker.

      That's what I wanted it for but when I try the propeller without the load that I carry at work perfect loved it but once I fill up the tank and put the gear on the boat everything changed and it was hard to get back on plane it looks like I need to lower the pitch of the propeller and they do not sell a smaller pitch.

    Sorry you had to learn the expensive way. I think you should be able to get close to $300 out of the prop if you're patient. Especially in Florida.
    OK, you've already figured out you won't find a 13 pitch 4 blade.
    My gosh that boat must be heavy when loaded. If you can't turn the 15 pitch 3 blade over 5300 loaded you're still on the wrong end of the scale.
    I asked before if you still had the original Yamaha prop. I'd like to see the performance numbers on that and what prop it is if you still have it. I still say your best bet is a Yamaha Reliance SDS 15 pitch. Even at that, it's so expensive it would take a long time to make the money back in any potential fuel savings. Like never probably.
    Oh, as far as moving up to 225HP, there's another big consideration besides money. Weight. The big block V6's weigh 65 pounds more than the inline 4's. As heavy as your boat is, I'm not sure what another 65 pounds will do hung off the stern. The difference in torque between the two motors is pretty great so you'll see an improvement but not sure it will be enough to totally offset the weight and the cost. You'll be spending $20K on the V6 upgrade (minus the sale of the F200).

      this video was made with the 3 blade Yamaha prop that came with the boat is very close to the solas wen it comes to performance cap. and you are right 65 extra pound hanging in the transom will make alot of weight and based on the money is not economical .

    When going from a 3 blade to a 4 blade prop, you need to go down 1 or 2 pitch sizes.
    So I still think the 4 blade would be the better match for your boat, will keep the bow down and lift the stern, just go down 2 pitch sizes from the one you tried, which will get your rpms back up to the 5600 to 5800 range at WOT you need to be at.

    The four blade should give you better control you need to lower Diameter in the lower pitch you will lose a little top end

    You still need to drop prop size with your 3 blade, you really want to be achieving 5700 to 6000 rpm at wot

      @@OutOnTheReef You said you carry a spare pin but you need to carry the whole kit as much as you're changing props on the water. You don't have to buy the expensive Yamaha nut/washer/pin kit for a spare. The Chinese one on eBay works fine for that purpose. With all the stuff you've spent money on, another $30 or $40 is not a big hit.

    Yeah, Capt that propellor picking is part science and part black magic. Lol. You can also change rpm by dropping diameter. Not just pitch. But it appears you’re on the right track. Tight lines

    maybe also consider trimming your boat so that it is not nose up, and so that it is not listed to one side.... both conditions make your motor work harder. move your weight to the center of the boat

    This is an odd comparison? He's running the boat HARD into the face of an obvious blowing sea, and he has it trimmed too high. All he's looking for is WOT for RPM recommendation.....really bad comparison. With the 3 blade obviously the RPM's will go up (and the fuel consumption as well...)
    4 blades are for mid-range cruising, not WOT unless you have MEGA horsepower....you really don't care about fuel consumption in that case. My boat will run the WOT recommendation for the engine, but it'll suck fuel like a Formula boat......back it off to 2500 rpm's, and it kills a 3 blade every time.
    Solas 14x21 Rubex HR stainless steel on a 20' 2600# vee hull. Solas explained the extra performance is the stern lift pulling the hull up out of the water.....you can't trim that out with a 3 blade.

I really apreciate your effort and your videos but that boat its a complete fail; if it behaves like a jumping kanguru in almost flat sea conditions, imagine with rough seas... I would never swap my old and cheap Trophy 2502 for a brand new of "those" harsh jumpers! For your own health, I strongly advice you not to spend any more money on it and swap it for a nice and smooth sea hull with at least 20 degrees deadrise.
