Sometimes I get urges of playing when I have bigger responsabilities, and you have to learn to put it away and remember it's just a game, and that's the problem, if you start playing well for some days you will not want to stop, it's REALLY addictive.

I’m a recovered addict. For a few years League was the only reason I had to live. Bullying led to anxiety and social isolation. I was depressed as hell but learning and improving at the game was the one thing I could do.
As grimy as the player base is. Esports and the love for the game kept me going at weird times. But I knew there was an issue when I’d get annoyed or tilted in champ select. I’d be mad before I even got to play.
There was a host of other issues around that compounded. But I don’t regret it anymore. I met some amazing people by chance and I did have some good times. There’s a twinge of cringe in me when I think about league being such a massive part of my life. But it is what it is, and I’m ok with that.

There's a physicist I watch who says something that I agree with, Addiction is an adaptive self defense mechanism. It's a symptom not the actual problem. Gaming has helped me through alot of things, and kept me out of alot of things. You can come back from a league/mmo addiction. Much harder to come back from addiction to hard drugs and irl gambling, especially with the gang connotations. People yell alot at gamer but in the grand scheme of things alot of people game because the reality is we have very little agency in the grand scheme of our lives.

I have a number of friends addicted to League, Dota, or other online comp games. I briefly was myself and it made me miserable. I think on some level it makes my friends miserable too. I get to hear them raging in voice chat every single night, getting mad, going to bed frustrated. If I ever mention this and how maybe they'd be happier doing other things, they always tell me no it's super fun and relaxing actually (it's not). Not trying to police how my friends spend their time, but it bums me out seeing how the games make them unhappy and they just keep playing.

I usually had chat muted, but the feeders and pings communicated enough abuse to be just painful enough to keep playing. At some point, I stopped having fun and stopped looking forward to playing, but I had nothing else to fill that time, so I kept going until I slowly found new games, friends and hobbies to break the cycle. I spent a lot of money on that game and I don’t regret it, but I do regret the way I used it to cope.

If you can manage to have a healthy relationship with the game and mentally deal with the challenges of soloqueue and the community who play it - the game can be immensely rewarding. I limit myself to no more than 3 games per day and typically don't play more than 2. If i feel the need to play more i'll often just watch other high elo players or review my own games which helps me improve way faster than spamming games alone does. Its definitely a game that rewards intentionality. I'd recommend you check out the Broken By Concept podcast - they have a lot of good information and strategies for improving while maintaining a healthy relationship to the game and are a breath of fresh air compared with the rest of the community.

Or you can move onto a game that doesn't force you to play with a highly toxic community that doesn't respect the game or other people's time. There is a giant world outside of league where you can find a place to develop your skills in a game that actually has a respectful community, who isn't hate-playing a game that they despise. I played lol for 10 years and after my first 3 month break, I haven't looked back. If they ever get their toxicity in check, maybe I'd look in that direction, but till then, there are way too many better things in life to spend my time on.

My friends were all into League and I never got it. I was bad at it, I'll openly admit that, probably the worst of my friends, but it's not like I never landed a good Ashe ult or came in with a clutch Sona heal. We won games, but like, then I'd go back to shit I actually enjoyed. For me that was single player offline games. I never understood how people played with strangers online, because like... The basic act of League wasn't fun? Climbing buildings in Infamous was inherently fun. Punching goons in Arkham Asylum was inherently fun. Clicking on minions and optimizing for last hit or making sure your ADC got soft mostly low health minions.... Not fun. On one hand, I'm greatful that League of Legends never got me. On the other hand, I have that brain rot that makes me care about the lore implications of Dream Drop Distance on Kingdom Hearts, so like, who am I to talk?

i am a current league player used to be addicted as shit I like to think I am a bit more reasonable with my playing now. Your justification for optimizing the last hit being boring could be given for chess or any other long standing competitive game. Who cares about learning sequences of moves just to beat a guy (turns out millions of people do). I just get bored in single player offline games. There is no motivation for me to get good (aside from souls like games where I want to find out how the story continues) and every time u fail u fight the exact same thing in most of them(unless it's procedurally generated). In league every failure is unique and multi-faceted. If you lost a game there can be a million reasons for it. Even for dying once there can be so many reasons u died. You chose the wrong runes in champ select you didn't look at where the jungler is. You don't know the matchup and that their champion is stronger in the 1 v 1.
I would say league at its best is not fun but satisfying. When you make a decision differently than what you'd do usually and it works out you feel good cause you improved. It's quantifiable and it's really fucking hard. I agree it's not mindless relaxing fun and it's more like work but you know what i never found the "mindless" relaxation fine and maybe i'm the weird one for that. Games like stardew valley bore me out of my mind and i cba to care about some games which have been callrd extremely beautiful and well made because it's just not interesting. Struggling against another human being to perfect ur ability to understand and use a set of given rules is just very satisfying. League at its worst i don't even have to explain you get extremely tilted and rage queue on repeat.

I play about a thousand games a year, last year it was 800 or less. That is like three games a day, but I would say it's more like two games a day on most weekdays and five games a day on weekends.
I play League alone most of the time. I enjoy ranked. I like that it's challenging and I am working towards a long-term goal(of being good). I am doing it for me. I started playing in 2021. It's easily one of the hardest and most complex games I have played.
I still have time to read, watch series, learn new stuff, and speak or see my friends if I want to. I rarely ever want to hang out though, and I have always enjoyed solitary activities, so I am not bothered. Much of time is spent with my family though even when I play games they are around. I also cook every day and I enjoy biking.
League is a beautiful game that has taught me a lot about how to learn and master skills. It has taught me a lot about the type of patience and mentality required (keep a cool head and think beyond the current game/instance/situation) to improve at things. It has also taught me a lot about the importance of consistency and how progress is often slow and then sudden. These translate to other things I try.
Maybe it helps that I started playing the game at 29, but I love this game. It's a shame there are people who can't have a healthy relationship with the game, but I am glad you and most in the comments are in a better state now.

Didn't play League but I did play Smite which is just as toxic of a MOBA. All MOBAs fall victim to this toxicity. One thing that could help is moderation of the playerbase and curbing extra-toxic behavior but rarely do game devs care to actually clamp down on their own playerbase out of fear they're going to get backlash. Like... they're already getting backlash by NOT doing anything remotely helpful.
It wouldn't be so bad climbing in ranked if the toxicity didn't make it this difficult. We look for validation of our skill. I know I was a better than Bronze player in Smite but toxic team mates kept me in ELO hell, which absolutely does exist. Can only carry so hard.

Things are only a waste of time if you learn nothing… ANYTHING you do can be a complete waste of time if you aren’t doing it consciously. You can learn a lot from team games if you’re actually playing them consciously and not just running though the motions in every match. If you’re analyzing your gameplay in realtime, not so much of a problem. I don’t know, but I just don’t think most things are a waste of time if you’re getting something out of it. Even if it’s just learning how to calm yourself. I love using games like this is practice being NOT a hothead.

There's this category of (often multiplayer) games that are simultaneously one of the most engaging, well designed experiences, and yet have the potential to make you absolutely miserable. For a lot of folks it's league, for me it was Dead by Daylight and Dota, maybe yours is rainbow six. It's so fascinating how, from my experience, people will often never recommend getting into these games and yet still often consider them to have the potential to make some of the funnest gaming experiences they've had. It's probably the blend of that incredible potential, mixed with the reality of the grind of constantly queing for the next game that makes it so problematic. It's really is a drug, chasing the dragon of that one perfect game that makes you feel validated for all the time you've spent staring at a boring win or crushing loss wishing you'd never logged on at all today.

The issue is that majority league players play the game without structure.
I play league everyday. I play 0-3 games a night. I do all my tasks before hand. Cook dinner, take the trash out, walk the dog, do the dishes. I spend time with my wife, take a shower.
I sit down at my computer. I put some music on. I review one of the last 3 games I play. Check for mistakes what I could of done better. I make notes. If my coach has watched one of my games and made notes I will watch that and ask him any questions.
Then I play a game. I then ask myself did I play my best that game win or loss. If I didn’t play my best why is that? If it’s something like I’m too tired or I have something on my mind. I turn the game off.

One thing that I hate about LOL is that u lose almost the same amount of RP as you win, making you feel losing a game a waste of your time, because now you're back to where you started. Each lose should be max 50% of the RP that you gain from winning. Also they should reward you more RP after winning say 3 games in a row.

Playing with friends is the only way I can stand to play summoner's rift anymore. I used to grind ranked when I cared about victorious skins, but I eventually realized the time/effort wasn't worth it. I've played it ever since Lulu came out, and it's a long time habit of mine. I don't think it's a good thing or worth my time, but it's something to do with friends, and not a lot of multiplayer games are all that enjoyable to me nowadays. Hopefully one will come along and replace it for me, bc it definitely has been a huge time sink as well.

I play with friends and can assuredly say that League brings the worst traits out of people more often than not. Myself included. MOBAs as a genre tend to, tbh. Most situations that can cause frustration have the benefit of you being able to step away from the situation with little to no consequence. League, and by extension other MOBAs, have the consequence of trapping you in that situation for as long as the game lasts (usually around 30 minutes) else you face repercussions. If you're getting camped by the Jungler and going 0/4 into the enemy Irelia, or any other lists of ways to fall super behind in the game, especially if the other lanes aren't doing well, tilting is kind of inevitable if you take the game seriously at all. If you're playing Ranked you're encouraged to treat the game like a job if you want to climb, especially with how many hours climbing can take (seriously +14/-30 in Emerald games is insane).
Even trying to play casually being put into situations where you lose because of one mistake, or even from teammates making bad mistakes, or just from a skill gap can be very frustrating. Tilting is almost inevitable in this game. Taking it out on your teammates, especially if they're your friends, is never okay. That said, when you don't have a way to externalize frustration in the game in a constructive way it brings that sort of toxicity out of people.

Took the game so seriously (not that good at it), neglected many other important things in life, easily 2000 + hours. After years of deleting it and re-downloading it, I haven't touched the game for well over a year now, and I'm genuinely less miserable & a happier person 😂. Super tilting game, whenever me and my friends talk about quitting our LoL days it straight up sounds like an addicts anonymous meeting
