My husband blows up with one honeybee sting. We discovered this during his first solo hive inspection. I was videoing him, asking him questions. He did great and then stung on the index finger. In a second he was whelping up and itching ALL over. Then he said, " I can't hear you". Long story shortened he's still alive but hates the epi pen so doesn't work the Bees. He was wearing a suit and 9 mil latex gloves. I get a little agitated at folks wearing tank tops shorts and sandals talking about how sweet and calm their bees are. I feel it doesn't show a true complete truth of what can happen. I don't care what they wear but be Real with uneducated folks that know nothing about Honeybees. A person can have a reaction that never had one before. Be Prepared for anything. Wearing protection doesn't make you a sissy. Not wearing protection is not a right of passage. Good video. Thanks
Watch yourself with the bee stings. When I started out I hardly had a reaction to being stung. But the more it happened the worse the swelling has gotten. I use a fully ventilated bee suit now with leather gloves.
What doesn't make sense to me is that I'm supposed to be allergic to bees every kind of be except for bumble bees. That's what they told me at the allergy doctor years ago and they gave me a prescription for an EpiPen. Well I got into beekeeping this past spring and I saw pictures of people online who had been stung and it looked like somebody beaten them with a ballbat so I'm thinking that's going to be me when I get stung because it hurts very bad for me to get stung by a yellow jacket or wasp. Turns out that I have no reaction to honeybees whatsoever no swelling nothing and it doesn't hurt much worse than a sweat bee sting even on the face. I got stung twice this past summer once on the nose and once on the stomach. Next year I plan on using just a jacket and a veil and gloves whenever I think it's necessary. I sometimes do things in my hive without gloves now because I'm not afraid of them I just don't like them crawling on my hands but I would like to eventually work them with no gloves.
