I think that "anteater" is actually Pangolin, since pangolin have scales and most/all other anteaters have fur. Pangolin is incredibly endangered. 😢

Jackie Kennedy Onassis made the leopard coat popular in the 1960’s, this led to the endangerment of the species . During the 1920s, the excessive use of feathers caused many birds to become extinct. Today, there has been a movement to have designers pay royalties to wildlife charities if they use the leopard motif or lion figures for example. Do you think this would work as a conservation method for these beautiful animals?

Hard to watch in the beginning, shocking and disappointing and actually pretty sad to know about the beluga whale leather..

The brand Laflore makes really interesting, chic bags out of cork- beautiful, feels lovely and very durable.

I have got a bag made out of pirarucu leather, it’s fish leather and away more sustainable, it is from a Brazilian brand called osklen, it has such a cool effect and a great durability. Mine has been aging beautifully.

Wow, those elephant bags were shocking Jess! 😢 Only 5000 anteaters remain in the wild. You’re so right about the whale leather, and I don’t care for the water buffalo either, though back in the day I had a water buffalo bible that was gorgeous… apparently the person who stole it agreed!

Don’t get me wrong, I would never buy an exotic leather bag, but the anteater pattern is just gorgeous, especially with this bag style. I wish manufacturers would make leather bags in this optics, it’s just so beautiful.
I quite liked the buffalo version as well, but the anteater is my favourite.

British bag brand Mulberry used to use buffalo leather around 2010. The first Alexa bags were made with it. My experience is it doesn’t wear well as it goes very slouchy very quickly. Much more so than calfskin.

I’m not personally into exotic leathers but this history is very interesting. I had no idea about elephant leather. I’m curious about the mushroom leathers. I need to see it up close.

Oh wow! Elephant skin bag looks as bad as it sounds 😬
    Yes to the vlog!!
Yes, the Anteater skin bag has a nice grain but, I cannot buy any of these bags pre loved.
Yes, the Beluga bag is ugly😬
I am quite boring in that I don’t like exotic animal bags.
I have’t tried plant based leather.
I especially love the Vibrato! I think it’s incredibly clever that Hermes created a pattern that evokes the musical term vibrato (pulsating /a pitch that changes)! Cool!

Elephant & whale - NO! I would like it limited to only food industry skins. I bought 2 cork bags in Portugal.🍷One has worn well, the other not so much. 🌻

I have had elephant wallets, they sell them in Thailand its a national animal, so i think its just using a resource not killed just for hides. Went reading and yes now they don't sell them, we bought them last in the 90s.

Wow. Given Hermes continue to make bags out of exotics idk why I'm so surprised at this but eeesh...BELUGA WHALES? ANTEATERS? ELEPHANTS?! 😮‍💨🥵 Thanks for the video, Jessie! Very interesting to know even though it's left me feeling 😵‍💫😆

Must admit that I was not a fan of any of these exotics…but then again I don’t care for ostrich, python or lizard on any bags either. For me I think it’s the tactile nature of these leathers that I don’t like. Thanks for sharing these truly unique pieces with us!!! And of course, I want to see any video footage from your trip that you want to share!!!💖💖💖

Firstly l must say that you are very brave to touch this topic, many wouldn't...I was unaware of this regarding Hermes, that said nothing in the corporate/fashion industry suprises me anymore. I guess if you can afford it then someone will make it for you. Thankfully I don't think the masses are wanting Elephant, Whale and Anteater leathers 💜

I really love designer handbags. But I am a vegetarian. With lamb, cow,… leathers a tiny voice says it’s not ethically ok but most designer houses got no alternatives (except Stella McCartney). And I don’t do exotics or fur. But those leather in your video are just a nightmare! Whale?! Elephant?! WTF! I hope there will be more alternatives in the future like mushroom, fish, apple and stuff like that

It may be a controversial view… but I have never been able to comprehend how people are happy for certain animals to be killed (because they happen to be deemed culturally acceptable to eat), but recoil in horror at the killing of others. All animals are animals at the end of the day, whether we deem them to be cute / edible / endangered. If none of us ate meat then none would need to be killed at all!
    Just my thoughts.
(Meat eaters please don’t come at me, I’m just sharing my personal opinion).

I recently purchased a vintage Valextra bag in seal leather, I was worried I'd be too creeped out to use it, but the texture and striations are actuallypretty darn cool imo.
Any skin that shows small holes, like whale and ostrich, are a HARD no from me.

Interesting topic ❤, the issue is when top luxury houses try to make very special bags for ultra rich clients who already have everything, what could they do to make these bags even more special? They can’t use apples, mushrooms because they are available in abundant. Ultra rich clients need ultra rare, not necessarily they want whale or elephant skin, but they are actually rarer than apples or mushrooms. That is why they still keep the “exotic” category in any luxury houses. Personally, I have a few python bags, they are very special and surprisingly super durable. Zero colour transfer, rain, sun, no damage at all. I love animals, I do buy leather bags, they all come from some kind of animals. To me, as long as we keep the bags for decades and only buy a few special pieces, then it’s fine. A lot of cheap clothes are made from plastic derivatives, they all ended up in the sea at a massive pollution scale, that is where we need to stop overconsuming. Comparing that to killing a few exotic animals for a few ultra rich clients (they are exclusive orders) are far more ethical and environmental. Keeping the water and environment clean are far more important for animals to live in. ❤🥰 Buy less, don’t pollute our planet 🌎

Hi Jess ❤ I love bags but the thought of an animal being killed just for it’s skin that’s a big NO for me…Cow skin, lamb etc as long as we consume the meat weather it’s human consumption or for out pets….my son used to hunt venison for food not just for antlers & skin like so many other people we know but he stop doing that also & buy just we need when it comes to meats…my thought 🤷‍♀️

You know how you always say you want to buy a plush or something to sratch your designer bag itch. Well tonight I’ve been browsing lulu lemon belt bags made of nylon in cool colours. I stopped at the dollar store and picked up a little belt bag for 3$ and it scratched the itch lol. I like seeing how something gets worn out lol so I’m happy I got something cheap so I can’t watch it get dirty

I could not ever buy whale leather or elephant. I can't even buy lambskin or calfskin. I won't eat lamb or veal. But I do wear leather and I hate myself for it. I hate feeling like I have a double standard. I know leather is a by product of the meat industry, but still. When I think about it, I feel weird. No I'm not veggie or vegan.
