  • The trail that loops around Knocknarea is known as Queen Maeve’s Trail - an Irish warrior queen from over 2,000 years ago. She was the Queen of Connacht, and the myths that surround her are as wild as the west coast landscape.
It is said that when Maeve died, she was laid to rest atop Knocknarea, standing upright, spear in hand, facing her enemies in Ulster.
The cairn on top of the hill is certainly big enough to have buried Maeve in such a way - the enormous stone mound is over 10 meters tall, 60 meters wide, and is estimated to be made up of 30,000 tons of stone.
All along this trail you’ll find info boards and QR codes that tell of Queen Maeve’s life, her role in An Tain, and the stories she’s inspired since.
We’ve even encountered Queen Maeve’s legacy in the trails we’ve walked before. The third trail we ever walked as Tough Soles was The Tain Way, a 40km trail that loops around the Cooley mountains, where she stole the brown bull from, with the very trail being named after the cattle raid.

Thanks once again for an excellent tip for my next hike. I really appreciate the down-to-earth details because I have no interest in orienteering I just want to get out there and enjoy the outdoors and your trails are usually perfectly suitable for me… Thanks for scoping them all out for us!

One of the hills that got me into hill walking!
As a student 30+ years ago in Sligo, i used to walk out to this one on a Saturday, up and around and back into town, a lovely walk! Then when i got braver, out to Benbulben and others with friends. I still have a special fondness for "the land of heart's desire".
    Thanks Ellie and
    All the best

What a great place to get into hill walking! The hills up and around here are so special, I feel lucky to be living close at the moment. Still have lots of exploring to do here ☺️

What a beautiful trail that looks! I plan to be walking in Mayo and Donegal this September....but I am tempted to have a small detour en route from Achill to Glenties if the weather is favourable on the day. Another lovely and tranquil guide video, and you did a good job of editing out the other people on the trail :). Thank you.

Gorgeous.... What is the distance (Time) from the Knocknarea Hill Walk Carpark to the Queen Maev's Cairn?

I did indeed! How much I give each time varies depending on what change I have, but I do contribute 😆
