When me and my friends first heard Talking heads the over whelming feeling was WTF is this, could not put them in any category, but we absolutely loved them. We finally got to see them in 1979 and I don’t think I have ever been so tired after a live show, you just could not be unaffected by the energy and we danced ourselves into a puddle.
_"...and we danced ourselves into a puddle"_ What wonderful imagery! Did you write that or is it a saying I haven't heard before? Either way, loved it! ;-]
What you said about modern day artists having to be alike depresses me. When I went to college in the 80s you could go to a party and hear Blondie, U2, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, B-52’s, Prince all at the same party.
The song was based on a repetitive jam, avant-garde producer, Brian Eno, encouraged them to explore a groove based method on the tracks for the 'Remain in light' album. For Brian Eno, (and the rest of the band) it wasn't a favourite track, but David saw potential and insisted he could write some lyrics that could work. The idea for the video was that David would imitate the body movements of shamans and preachers, (seen in some of the background clips) that's why he's dressed the way he is and acts like he's giving a sermon or in a trance state. The lyrics are bit obscure, not really that directly related to the video, other than they have dreamlike imagery.
Brian Eno is a genius and a whole 'nother rabbit hole that should be explored. I personally love his work "Your blue room" with him and Bono singing.,.I want to say it was for the group Passenger... but I may be wrong on that.
for the eerie ambient sound of this song, check out brian eno, songs like "St Elmos Fire", or his Ambient soundtracks. not pop songs by any means, but he literally invented ambient music, like music for airports. my favorite album he produced was Day of Radiance, by Laraaji, multilayered hammer dulcimer.
The lyrics are about/for people who go through life like zombies and don’t stop to appreciate the small things. The “water flowing underground” is the things out of our control that affect us that we can see or predict.
When I first saw this at 35 I thought this is weird but fascinating. I was a Doobie Bros and Steely Dan fan. At 55 I thought how many people know who talking heads are ? I’d hear their music and think this is definitely unique but cool. I grew to enjoy them and appreciate their sound and message. I just saw David Byrne’s special on HBO a few months back and at 75 I think they’re genius. Funny how you think more clearly the older I get 😁
I loved the Talking Heads in high school in the 1980s, and then recently I have got into video art and realized for the first time how cool the stuff they are doing in this video is. the water effect is a video feedback pattern, that is being expertly wiggled. and I love how they are using very crude video effects to make something that was cutting edge art at the time.
I got to see Talking Heads in 1979, at a bar in Hawaii. I was in the USMC and the next day we went on my first float for 6 months. I was hooked on Talking Heads after that night, there live performance is the best way to see this group.
I'm from the Class of '83, and my best friend Rich Alger used to do an impression of David Byrne from this video, spazzin' out and all. Hilarious! He and his wife Tina Kronis (who used to work with Mummenschantz -- a mime group from back in the day) run an avant garde troupe called Theater Movement Bazaar out in LA, with very creative dance mixed in with their productions. I'm sure this Talking Heads video was one of his inspirations to pursue their career with interpretive dance and theater.
Talking Heads/Wild Life from the motion picture True Stories This movie features David Byrne and the music of the Talking Heads. It also features John Goodman in his first movie role in which he actually sings!
Many more cool songs and styles to be listened to by Talking Heads. I was lucky to see them three times. I would suggest 'Psycho Killer 'and 'Girlfriend is Better' next.
Harvard Square Cinema would change movies every few days, unless it was particularly popular. When "Stop Making Sense" dropped, they played it, and it stuck around for months and months, and the show was like attending their concert. I went several times, and took different people to enjoy the experience. A very different movie also captured the community's imagination, and played for months, and that was "My Dinner with Andre", by Louis Malle. It was a shared elegant dinner between two gentlemen...avant-garde director, Andre Gregory, and actor, playwright and son of a prominent editor, Wallace Shawn...and the conversation they had. Both directors Malle and Demme are auteurs who demanded artistic freedom. And both have been rewarded with longevity. Talking Heads were art students, and bring that cutting edge spirit to the music, set design, and performance. Their album, "Naked" is a rare gem, with every song a wonder. Someone should finally do "Democratic Circus" because it is about the coolest song ever.
This whole album, Remain In Light, was an amazing opus, and marked a significant change from the previous one, Fear of Music. Some of that change was marked in the interim David Byrne/Brian Eno collaboration, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. But Remain In Light is still a classic. And although not as theatrical as the later Stop Making Sense tour, the Remain in Light touring version of the Talking Heads was remarkable and very high energy. The 1980 touring band featured the original quartet with additional members including Bernie Worrell, keyboards (from Parliament/Funkadelic - and still with the THs for the Stop Making Sense tour), and Adrian Belew on lead guitar (Belew has also been part of Frank Zappa's Mothers, David Bowie's band, King Crimson (1981-2013), Laurie Anderson's group, etc). TH-cam has a good video of the concert tour stop in Rome from the 1980 Remain In Light tour. th-cam.com/video/GwWW742T0Wc/w-d-xo.html
Talking Heads, always a fun time would erupt amongst us when they came on the radio. Stop what you’re doing and do a jerky dance see who got the most laughs 😂 drop our wrench’s and get funky in the shop!
If you can imagine, the Stop Making Sense live version is better. LOVE your reaction....I love his eccentricities and his "preacher" get up. It is both humorous and so true.
You said it perfectly!! He is being him. That's just who he is. He is brilliant BECAUSE he is both talented and not normal. And you are absolutely right....today this would be judged harshly 'cause they don't 'fit in'. We are living in a much less tolerant world these days. Very Sad.
One of all-time favourite songs and videos of the 80s. Don't quite know why it resonates so much with me, but I bought the single when it was released and still adore it to this day. Don't listen to Talking Heads at all, bar a couple of their other singles, Road To Nowhere and Psycho Killer, but this song is special
Yes The band IS phenomenal! Have you reacted to the *Tom Tom Club* ? It's the side project band of Talking Heads bassist and drummer Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz. Check out *Genius of Love* , So much fun and you'll see Tina really doing her thing. It has been sampled ALL over the place so you may well recognize the beat. Check out the live version from the movie *Stop Making Sense*
David Byrne is still making fine music, with amazing stage settings. The video "Ride Rise Roar" follows performances on a tour from about 10 years ago, and it's wonderful.
If you want to understand the man, and his greatness, you need to sit down and listen to some of his interviews. I remember watching his first appearance on Saturday Night Live, I was like ten, and wondering what the hell am I watching and hearing. Over the years I'd come to I realized what it was. It was a fine piece of art that took time to soak up and analyze, with all of its subtltese and intricacies.
Well Hi Chod......soon as I saw this I had to pounce on it. My favorite Talking Heads song......I never totally got into them because when they hit I was in my late thirties....but I sure respected them. But when I saw them on video, the energy was SO compelling!. The TH-cam video of the Broadway show that he put on is AMAZING to watch. If you have an hour or so, I highly recommend it to you. Energy off the charts, creativity off the charts. Dancing amazing.
My favourite Talking Heads album and I've got them all. In 2018 the Beninese (African) singer Angélique Kidjo released a cover of the entire album, Remain in Light, in her own style. It's amazing in it's own way and makes sense since Talking Heads have acknowledged the influence of African music on Remain in Light. I'm big fan of African music anyway so this was the perfect marriage for me. On other albums she covered Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix and Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones with the equally amazing Joss Stone guesting on vocals. She gets around. Her music is very much African but also completely modern.
The concert from Rome is far better in my opinion try watching that with Robert Fripp from King Crimson on guitar it is one of the grooviest concerts I have ever seen.
The first three songs from this album are crazy complex and amazing. I would like to see you react to them, but the studio versions are the best. Born Under Punches Cross-eyed and Painless The Great Curve The Great Curve has a really tricky polyphonic section at the end where three different vocal lines are being sung at the same time. Incredible!
Great reaction!! You are so right about David Byrne and Talking Heads!! The next song you need to listen to is the opening number from the "Stop Making Sense" concert film. It's called Psycho Killer and it features an unreal performance by David! Other songs I would recommend, since you seem to actually "take requests! would be "Love Lies Bleeding/Funeral For A Friend" by Elton John, "American Woman" by Guess Who, "The Needle and The Damage Done" by Neil Young, "Someday Never Comes" by Creedence Clearwater Revival , "Rain-o" by Chilliwack, and "Friends of Mr. Cairo" by Jon and Vangelis. Nowhere in there will you be disappointed!
Hey Chad, enjoyed your reactions to Talking Heads. They're my all-time favorite band, and you can go deep down their rabbit hole and not get bored. Here are some more suggestions: their funk era is great. Try reacting to Mr. Jones ( Cuban influences) and I Zimbra. For the latter, you can even try the performance David Byrne did on Stephen Colbert last year. The guy still kills it at age 70, performing on Broadway!
David Byrne realized late in life that he is on the autistic spectrum. Boy, do I recognize a fellow traveler. He soothes me. He is still going strong. Glad you get him.
Such a great album Remain In Light this whole album is awesome Radiohead is named after one of their songs and David Byrne inducted them in to the Rock And Roll hall of fame in fact you could spend months just reacting to The Talking Heads and Radioheads extensive bodies of music two of the best bands ever.
Are you ever going to check out the band called "The Cars"? Lot's of great songs from them too. "Drive", "Best Friends Girl", "Moving In Stereo" etc...
"That's his style"... and "Industry would have changed him".... I can highly recommend David Byrne's book How Music Works. It's partly music theory, partly his own (biographical) path with his art and the industry in which it takes place.
Heads are in my top 5 all time bands. You would like "The Tubes" if you like Heads. Try "One in a million girls" or "Amnesia" by them. If you want something ultra funky try "Tip of my tongue".
thank you Wilburn for helping us relive some of the best moments of our lives, its suprisingly satisfying. Would love to see you react to a video titled ...Marcus King "Dyin" live from the big house....this young dude will grab your soul
The first time I seen this on MTV I though this guy was fucked up in the head! Their cover of Take Me To The River is the best version of that song. At first I was not a fan of this band. Only liked a couple songs. Today I love this band. Chod you want to get a great taste of this band watch the DVD Stop Making Sense! It is a video of their live concert. Some claim it is the best rock video ever

Same.
It’s nice to see that the things they pioneered are still being utilized by indie music nowadays.
His live shows are superb too. The time I got to see them remains a fantastic memory, one which nobody has matched in the intervening 40+ years.
I saw Talking Heads at The Greek Theater in Berkeley Ca. Stop Making Sense tour. By far the most fun you can ever have at a concert was Talking Heads.
What you said about modern day artists having to be alike depresses me. When I went to college in the 80s you could go to a party and hear Blondie, U2, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, B-52’s, Prince all at the same party.
Talking heads was my first concert. There is no one that sounds like them, they were absolutly unique and brilliant.
try some tom petty..i appreciate that you let the musiic play then comment
@@jamesvilleneuve8652 tom petty was my first concert at filmore west 1996 😃
What yr did you see them?

Perfect reaction...respectful, no interruptions and you get it.... he’s genius, brother
Funny how you think more clearly the older I get 😁
Steely and Doobies too. Funny how the same disparate groups seem to get listened to by many.
My favorite videoclip EVER. Love his attitude. Never gets old. David Byrne is a visual artist as well. Creates some absurd art.
The live event ‘Stop Making Sense” is still that masterpiece.
Girlfriend is Better is probably my favorite song from the Stop Making Sense concert. I think it's definitely worth a watch.
Almost 40 years old and still sounds fresh, this aged pretty well!
I got to see Talking Heads in 1979, at a bar in Hawaii. I was in the USMC and the next day we went on my first float for 6 months. I was hooked on Talking Heads after that night, there live performance is the best way to see this group.

For a freaky video- check out She Was by them.
I can't believe I missed this one 11 months ago. One of my top five groups. The Geeks of Groove!
Talking Heads are the epitome of a band that continually experimented with different styles and sounds. Love it.

Yes, so true. That was a crazy lineup.
One of my favorite live shows ever just insane.

One of the most creative band ever and the music is incredible. Saw them back in 1979!!
This was among about a dozen music videos when MTV first started.
One of all-time favourite songs and videos of the 80s. Don't quite know why it resonates so much with me, but I bought the single when it was released and still adore it to this day. Love your reaction, as always. I always felt that this song was about a man starting to have midlife crisis

I am sorry it was Belew.

The Great Curve
The Great Curve has a really tricky polyphonic section at the end where three different vocal lines are being sung at the same time. Incredible!
I love the whole album but I think Houses In Motion is my favorite live its incredible.
True artists. Fabulous. You're right. It's all about lost authenticity.
Talking Heads need to be seen live for full appreciation.
Take me to the river, And she was, Burning Down the house r great by them! He is such a talent! 🙂
I love that you dont pause and talk during the video…thank you

Now there is a man who is who he is, and makes no apologies. I love that. He is my hero
Check out his bass player she had her own group called Tom Tom Club. Check out her big hit Genius of love it is so funky.
Tina Weymouth. her husband was the drummer for both bands.
Let’s get Chod to do genius of love see if he recognizes how much it’s been sampled
"And She Was"
Official video 👍
I saw him a couple years ago in DC. He is still great after all these years.
Hey Chad, enjoyed your reactions to Talking Heads. They're my all-time favorite band, and you can go deep down their rabbit hole and not get bored. From the early days of MTV, back when they still played videos.
Love him too! You're right many have said he's too weird but I personally like that. Against the industry!
David Byrne realized late in life that he is on the autistic spectrum. Boy, do I recognize a fellow traveler. He soothes me. He is still going strong. Glad you get him.
Such a great album Remain In Light this whole album is awesome Radiohead is named after one of their songs and David Byrne inducted them in to the Rock And Roll hall of fame in fact you could spend months just reacting to The Talking Heads and Radioheads extensive bodies of music two of the best bands ever.
no spectrum could contain this spaz. great song :)
Remain In Light. Best album by Talking Heads
Talking Heads, always entertaining!!!👍✌😀
Talking Heads were huge George Clinton /Parliament fans which is who they got the idea for the song Burning Down The House
Love the talking heads! 🤟🏻
I would love to see you react to Oingo Boingo "Deadman's Party". Great reaction!
Are you ever going to check out the band called "The Cars"? Lot's of great songs from them too. "Drive", "Best Friends Girl", "Moving In Stereo" etc...
Peter Gabriel in Sledgehammer was art I can understand at least lol, but I respect the artist anyway.
The Oscar winning David Burne
one of my favorite bands 👍
"That's his style"... and "Industry would have changed him".... I can highly recommend David Byrne's book How Music Works. It's partly music theory, partly his own (biographical) path with his art and the industry in which it takes place.
Those videos make them even more memorable.
i saw the talking heads and blondie at cbgb on the same night about oh, 1000 years ago.
Performance art at its best!
Watch the ‘Stop Making Sense’ show. Trust us. ❤️
Heads are in my top 5 all time bands. You would like "The Tubes" if you like Heads. Try "One in a million girls" or "Amnesia" by them. If you want something ultra funky try "Tip of my tongue".
You can hear Brian Eno's voice prominently in the background.
(Nothing But) Flowers- from TH's, Naked, album
Endlessly quotably genius funny song and the video is also insane. :D
Next song maybe "Girlfriend Is Better" live from Stop Making Sense?
Great reaction Chod. He got his dance moves from looking at footage from an insane asylum
You hit the nail on the head.
Live Stop making sense tour 84, thats the one bud.
thank you Wilburn for helping us relive some of the best moments of our lives, its suprisingly satisfying. Would love to see you react to a video titled ...Marcus King "Dyin" live from the big house....this young dude will grab your soul
This song is such a classic. It's reached meme-level, lol.
The first time I seen this on MTV I though this guy was fucked up in the head! Their cover of Take Me To The River is the best version of that song. At first I was not a fan of this band. Hello, no, NOTHING HAS CHANGED HIM. Still influenced by afropop. Amazing
Eric burdon when I was young Roy Clark yesterday when I was Young
David Byrne is a genius!
Your going to love the energy, thank you.
This video was choreographed by Toni Basil ('Hey Mickey').
Someone recommended Cheap Trick. I second that. I'm also curious about what you would think of their drummer from Bun E. Carlos.
Check out This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) by the Talking Heads
If you like this one you should check out their keyboardist Jerry Harrison's song Rev It Up.
Dadaism is where all this awesomeness comes from.
This song shook me up when I listened to it: shook up my world at that time. I made a change.
Cribbed from the best of 70s Afropop.
Check out this song crosseyed and painless very funky
I think they tried to change and judge him back then... for what it was worth. LOL
Chod. You have just met the coolest hippest man on the planet. Don’t waste anymore time. See the Stop Making Sense concert film!
I'd also recommend Wild Wild Life by Talking Heads for another crazy video.
GENIUS!!
I just love how experimental bands were in the 80s. Sure, some of it was terrible. But most of it was great.
Very strange band. Love their stuff.
I'm way too old for these guys, but I like them.
That song/video was made 40 years ago.
You nailed it in the first minute.
I noticed many people have a replied talking about Brian Eno Brian Eno and David Byrne together if you can check out anything by Brian Eno
Try their video for "And She Was".
Check out their song Cross eyed and painless
