Every time I watch one of your videos (and when I catch your streams) I always seem to hear Mrs. Citadel either cleaning or cooking in the background. Do you ever let her do anything besides domestic chores?? 😄
Navy Seals used to say when things went wrong that Mr. Murphy of Murphy's law fame had come along for the ride. "What can go wrong will go wrong". Mr. Murphy came along with everybody in that last 5 minutes. Noobs get wrecked by 1 DD, then that DD get bling fired in smoke after not being lit for ever. WTF!
Odin and Yugumo had something going on. I want to believe Odin acted as a distraction. The only way they could have won was by sinking a bunch of ships. Yugumo gave it 100 percent and so did Odin even though potentially he might have maybe found a way to survive longer, but given the circumstances the Odin captain's line of thought is understandable.
Okay, I asked this on the Old Man's version, so I'll ask it here: why are the ships getting hit at the end being called potatoes? Just detecting the torpedoes isn't enough; I couldn't tell they were going to hit either ship until it was too late to change course. How are you able to tell if they're going to hit you and you need to maneuver to get out of the way when the torpedoes are so far away? I do that CONSTANTLY in game, so if there's some way to avoid it, please let me know.
It’s a function of the speed of the torpedoes and your ship. You gotta be able to mentally fast forward the torpedoes path (they go in straight lines at a fixed speed), and your ship’s position. If the torps cross your path at the same time you’re there, that’s a bad time and you need to take evasive actions. Since torps travel in straight lines at a fixed speed, you know where they’ll be, and you can turn your ship into or away from the torps to make yourself as small a target as possible and maybe squeeze through the gap between torps.
@@mrb692 You say "You gotta be able to mentally fast forward the torpedoes path (they go in straight lines at a fixed speed), and your ship’s position." How? How do you do this? I'm a 31 year old astrophysics PhD student (so I'm good at math), and I have never once in my entire life been able to project things forward to know where they'd be in, say, five seconds. I don't even really know if that's possible, because I should be able to do it if it is. So how? How do you learn how to do this?
mknote I don’t know the metacognition to describe it, or how in depth you need me to be, but I’ll try. Step 0 is to mentally draw a line straight forward from your ship, and “danger lines” along path of the torpedoes across the ocean. That gives you the intersection point. Step 1 is to figure out if they’ll actually hit you, or if they’re fired too far in front or too far behind. The actual equation is the classic displacement = velocity x time one, where time is how long it will take you to reach the “danger lines” drawn in step 0 at your current speed. It’s the same process you use when determining if someone in a crowd is gonna walk into you or not. It’s the same math for figuring out “an asteroid will pass this far from the earth at this date”. Step 2: If you think you and the torpedoes might possibly want to be in the same volume of ocean at the same time, you know that the danger lines are to be avoided at all costs and you’ll need to take evasive actions. Generally that’s turning in, cutting the throttle, or both. If you’re going slow and are in a nimble ship, pouring on the steam would work too. So the thought process from start to finish is: “Aah! Torpedoes!” “We’ll cross their paths about in about 15 seconds, and it looks like they’ll get there at the same time.” “Steer us in to the gaps between the torpedoes, (or into the fewest torpedoes possible)” It becomes significantly easier if you assume the enemy launched their torps along the indicator, because then you don’t have to worry about the “will they hit” calculations, you just need to park your ship between the danger lines.

Or even more dangerously, when I think, "Oh, he'll take like 8 seconds to get here," I go, and barely avoid a collision. I can't project things in my head like that. I can do the math fine on paper, but using my vision and doing it in my head? Impossible. It's why I have such trouble aiming in WoWS. It's why I hit the ball three times in four years of playing baseball. I can't project motion through time. I've never been able to.
mknote I was hoping you knew X=V*t, but one can never be too sure with you astrophysicists :P. The safe bet then is to not do any analysis at all and just assume that the any torps fired at you will hit you unless you take immediate action to avoid them (unless they’re very obviously going to miss). It’s a safe enough assumption to make because the aiming indicator on the firing ship does all that predictive math for them. All you gotta do at that point is try and fit your ship in between the “danger lines”, as if they were a series of parking spots.
