Been mountain biking 12 years, and as an engineer (mechanical) this is easily the best explanation I have ever seen on how to land jumps. Good job Phil, very impressive presentation of this skill
Sean Kelly wow, that’s a lot. I’m a Week in and i have a red n black cube aim sl 2016. It was 600$, But it’s perfect for me. The only problem is that there are not too many tracks in/near bucharest
Watched your new world disorder part when I was about 8 and loved it so much. Then I met you in Portland at Gotham bike and ski where you did a show. I still have a signed picture of you from 6 or 7 years ago. You rule!!
Just learned proper bunny hops by watching what you did at 2:58 at 4x slow and regular several times. You can see that you do not lean very far back behind your seat like so many vids say to do, in fact your pull hard towards your waste with your arms which seems to provide 70% or more of the lift for the front wheel. Thank you man!
Glad to see you back making a video! This is something I didn't figure out on my own for a long time, and the last time I landed front wheel first I bottomed out my fork, cracked the frame, and went OTB.
It's great to see you back. What a great in depth tutorial. I'd love to see some of the behind the scenes work involved in making this video. It's really amazing work.
Thank you! It's not a process that I'd be able to document (at least not easily). My train of thought is very very scattered and it takes me quite some time to sort it all out. Even when I'm done in not super satisfied with the end product. I'd give this video a 6/10. There's so much more i wanted to include but it got to the point where I had to call it good enough. I can always expand in another video.
Oh, I understand. I've only made a handful of videos so far. No real plan. I just record everything and figure it out in post. The one video I actually tried planning( A Rylo360 Review) ended up like garbage(do not watch that video). Then again, that was my first video. I've yet to find a balance. You made this video seem so fluid and polished. I'm sure there was a ton of work involved. The whole "Alberta Trip" series I made must have taken me 120+ hours of sitting in front of my computer, trying to put together a story from days of footage. I imagine a similar amount of effort was poured into this tutorial. At some point, you do have to call it good enough. Of course, your good enough equals amazing. :-)
I believe this is your best tutorial to date. Encountered a fair bit of the drop to flat situations at Fort Rock over the weekend. This video helped with understanding the dynamics and how to approach these monsters with more confidence. Great job Phil just wish I saw this sooner🙏🏼
Happy to see you making videos again. You would not believe how much your channel has improved my riding. Top quality informative videos, keep em coming.
The use of golfballs to show how things deflect was absolutely brilliant! Thanks Phil you really know how to break things down to better understand how it works!
Very good. I’ve always liked to land more on the back wheel. This explanation has me rethinking it. I’ve always been cognizant of the possibility of going over the bars landing front wheel first. I’m older and grew up on motorcycles. Now riding bicycles.
Wow! You definitely offer the best ‘how to’ videos out there! All the where, why & how’s are covered and explained so well. Thanks for all the hard work you put into these!
Yes!!!!! A Skills with Phil video. Really informative and I especially like how you broke it down into different trail features and what to do. Totally stoked to see a new video from you!!!!
Thanks for breaking it down so well. There is so much in this video that riders of all levels can take to heart and practice. The editing, use of slo-mo and highlights + that golf ball work, really made it easy to follow and absorb.
Well this is one video I wish I hadn’t missed! Captain Phil you are the Yoda of mountain biking. You should have 50 times more subs! For what it’s worth!! Thanks for the great tutorial!!
Thank you so much for the videos like this one! You hit perfect balance of explanation, illustration and demonstration. Each and every time. It's just.... you are awesome, dude! I believe many people got on their bikes and progressed because of you, Phil. Thank you!
wow that golf ball demo was so simple yet so damn genius! Never thought of it that way but that might be the absolute best way to explain it . Totally unlocked a new perspective for me
Very relevant for me. I recently went off this drop, nosedived, and then had to do a sudden right turn. It didn't end well, and my pedals bit me really hard. I'm going to have one of those scars probably forever. Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Good to have you back mate! Everybody needs a little readjustment in their life from time to time and glad to see your back. As you are an expert at breaking every discipline down and making it sound so easy which in turn gives the confidence needed to go and do it! Cheers mate
Your Abilitiy to explain things is still amazing Phil ! Best ever How to about discovering the when and why and the difference in landing zones.. Really glad to see a new howto after a long time. Thanks for sharing, Phil.
Phil!!! Happy to see you again!!!! This video is perfect timing. The past month I had my 1st downhill park ride and have seen some big improvements on jumping and drops. Pulled off my 1st doubles and tabletops. Whatever you had going on I hope all is cool in your world. Thanks for letting me play bikes with you.
So great to see you back on TH-cam. Was watching everything you had on Instagram wondering when we would Get another video. Thanks as always, great video
Welcome back, Phil!! We missed you! I could have used this video yesterday before I went off of a 3ft huck that looked like a roller. My bike saved me, I had nothing to do with it, haha! :)
What a great detailed video mate. Thank you so much for putting so much effort into it. I landed to flat very badly at the end of last year and after weeks of recovery I'm ready to hit that same drop again. But!!! I think I'll practice some of the techniques you've shown on smaller drops first as you said in the vid. Thank you and hello from Glasgow Scotland!
Welcome back buddy, hope you and Hailey are doing well. Perfect timing cause I am riding again after my broken foot at NEMBA Fest. The production on this video is insane, as always you lead the way with amazing videos with great graphics and transitions. Enjoy Autumn up North, your weather there is killing it compared to us in Texas. Hope to see you again in the Spring at NEMBA Fest.
Great vid Phil with loads of examples. I prefer when possible to be slightly front biased as my feet can sometimes slip off the pedals on back wheel landings at speed. I wear flats so possibly dropping heels too much or rear wheel bounce.
Great video Phil! Glad to see you back at making full length videos again! I’ve learn a lot from you, Jeff @trailboss Lenosky too! Thanks for putting this together.
It’s cool to see someone else explain what I’ve figured out all on my own over the last couple of years through practice and riding. Very well done Phil!!!
Love the video Phil! Tons of helpful and useful tips. Yet again you have a way of teaching unmatched by any other youtuber. Good to see you back bro 🤘😃
Awesome and informative video, will definitely be working on landing on my front and back wheels for certain occasions. Cause i land with both wheels, or try to at least and it can be super jarring on the wrong jump or drop.
Great video! This reminds me that I printed your ramp plans, but never got a chance to build the ramp. Need to build that ramp! I went easy when smeshing the like button
I just posted a follow up video where I answered a bunch of questions I saw in the comments.

People who are good at mountain biking: Has techniques for landing
Me: Sends it and hopes that I don’t crash
Lol, the same :)))
Lolll same. Luckily we have people like Phil giving us tips!
For real. I try to land as flat as possible but I land on my Behind.
There are tons of "how to jump" tutorials. But this in depth landing tutorial is really helpful. Glad to are back.
He's BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK! So stoked to see this pop up. Love your stuff Phil!
I’m so glad you’re back to making videos. Hope your time off gave you everything you needed.
SOOOO good to see another video from you @Skills with Phil !!! Take care!

This is a really well put together video. Very clear, with great examples. And the video comes off as professional and well done too!
Super informative video, nothing is worse then hitting a jump and going into a straight nose dive. Love the demonstrations and graphs too!
So happy to see another video from you Phil and see that you are still doing ok. We all miss you!
