- On the 10th anniversary of McKayla Maroney's final elite competition in Antwerp, Belgium we revisit her 2016 interview. The Olympic and World Champion settles long debated gymternet questions and we find out what caused the physical and emotional breakdown that ultimately ended her elite career. We discuss:
If she feared blowback from speaking frankly about her experiences.
The skill she tried that Marta Karolyi told her to never to do again.
The circumstances surrounding her injuries and multiple surgeries.
The post-Olympic tour conditions and their effects on her health.
She answers fans suspicions that her injuries are due to poor nutrition.
Some fans claim that All Olympia Gymnastics Center (AOGC) break gymnasts, her responds.
Did the advice she received from her coaches contribute to her injuries?
How she dealt with self identity as she struggled to stay healthy.
Discusses the role of humility and insecurity through the Olympic selection process.
Does she think the men's team should be more like the women's program in order to be more successful?
Dealing with criticism on social media.
She describes her personal experiences as an elite gymnast, and their influence on changes she would like to see made at the national team level.
Who does she credit with teaching her that amazing vault technique: her second coach, Howie Liang at Gym-Max or her Olympic coach, Artur Akopyan at All Olympia Gymnastics Center (AOGC)?
Why did she go overtime in 2013 at the Antwerp World Championships on floor

The maturity McKayla displayed in this interview is astonishing.
Got that right!!!💯
There’s very little that the gymternet agrees on, but EVERYBODY adores and wants the best for McKayla Maroney! 💜
Great throwback interview. Would love for McKayla to do round 2 for another interview on Gymcastic. She’s such a beautiful soul!
We love you, McKayla!
Oh, a follow up interview would be awesome!!!
its so tough watching this video in the sense that she had so much more weighing on her that she wasnt able to share yet for a bunch of reasons. she seemed to be so early in the journey to recovery yet so strong. even sharing just this much she seemed to be so happy about!
A follow up interview with Mckayla would be so incredible!
Its remarkable to see Mckayla’s energy shine through so bright despite everything else. On a side note, gymcastics you guys should hire Mckayla to be a future host for the podcast! ❤
DEFINITELY
Yes, please follow up with her and have her say what she sees and if she plans on returning to gymnastics either as a mentor, coach, therapist for other gymnasts or as a person in decision making capacity in some way at USA Gymnastics.
Maroney was my favorite. I never did see her gymnastics fully til after she retired. All I knew was she was the best vaulter ever. What a talent
After this year’s world’s I think that’s up for debate. But she is definitely the cleanest vaulter I’ve ever watched… by far.
@@vjones4769After this year's worlds?
She is an absolutely impressive person, very much reflected❤❤
The interview that made me a super fan of Gymcastics!
Just saw this pop up. Pleasant surprise. Looking forward to seeing what's in this video. I remember seeing the long interview you did back in 2016. It was very good.
Wonderful interview 💯!!!!
Such an underrated gymnast, she is a true all arounder but her potential was never achieved because of all the shit she had gone through because of USAG
Ahe is auch a brave, talented, beautiful person and gymnast!! We love you mckayla!
29:38 absolutely brilliant words
Can you do a full interview like this with Aly Raisman?
Thank you for the recommendation. We don't have a video of the interview, but Jessica went to Aly's home back in 2018 and did an interview with her and her mom, Lynn, in their backyard: gymcastic.com/319-aly-and-lynn-raisman/ (Episode 319)
@@GymCastic nice! Thanks!
@@GymCastic why isn’t it on TH-cam
I need the music to be a bit lower in video...a little..
Tendonitis is the result of overuse and overwork. USG needs to raise coaching standards. Coaches need licenses not certificates. People who are professionally trained in sports medicine, sports physiology, sports kinesiology & sports biomechanics etc. are needed to train gymnasts. Russia has higher coaching & training standards. Ms. Maroney is very resilient & super positive. She sees the best in every situation or has an attitude of gratitude. God bless her for getting through it. Life is a journey and she's embraced this truth.
I'm in love with her ❤❤❤
When was this video filmed? I think it's old.
2016
I think 2014/2015
Her doing that vault reminds me of Surya Bonaly doing a backflip at an official event lol
To all the hears unless you have been what they have been through keep your mouth shut, I can’t believe
that there coaches treated them very abuse of. and they’re not allowed to talk to there teammates.
I’m glad that they able to get the help they needed , the worst part was that they were sexually abused they
had the whole world to know about it. All the women who went through it they amazing how they helped it
The editing on this video is all over the place and really distracting
I passionately follow gymnastics and have since 2012 as a layman. I have adored so many gymnasts since that time with all my heart. A direct relative of mine was a track and field Olympian and I have seen a number of world records broken in person. The summer Olympics is something our family celebrates and obsesses over every quad. Still, Maroney's team final vault is the very greatest moment of sport to me ever. I watch the comparison with glorious Kohei's gorgeous 2012 vault about once a month just to revel in her performance. Maroney, you went through hell to give us a moment of pure, otherworldly awe. You are still loved and appreciated.
