This is the perfect modern amp, just jumped to the top of my list. Amp makers take note: EVERY new amp head design NEEDS a dummy load and some kind of DI out. It's 2023, almost 2024, not even touring musicians are plugging into cabs most of the time anymore. The computer editor and IR loader is a nice touch, but the dummy load and DI is absolutely essential at this point, theres's no excuse anymore.
Yea I haven't seen a built in dummy loads on anything.... Except the Engl mini heads, mark v25, rev g20, Peavey invective and numerous other amps that have been around 5+ years and have a built-in load.
Good Lord! You guys have had a ton of amazing amps on this channel, but that is one of the best sounding amp demos I have ever heard. This is one of the first all tube amps that makes me feel like I can get almost any amp sound out of it. Usually I feel like I cannot possibly afford to buy every amp I want to cover every sound in my head, so I have to pick one or two tubes amps, and then rely on something like a QC or Fractal to try and cover all the other amp tones in my head. But this Soldano covers so much ground. Everything from clean Bassman tones, Plexi tones, all the way up to thick Bogner and SLO tones. It’s all here. Such a great amp. And I love that a classic tube amp now has some useful modern features like IRs, DI out, headphone out, built in load box, etc.
Great tones! I like this kind of boutique overdriven amp tones way more than the thick honk of the D styles everyone drools over. It can do really high gain but not limited to it.
@Andertons FYI… Way back in the 90s and early 2000s Mike Soldano did manufacture and sold several other amps besides the SLO. The Hot Rod 50, Hot Rod 50+, Lucky 13, Reverb O Sonic and the two smaller Atomic 16 and Astroverb 16 (both running at 20W)… if there’s really a “new” amp in the lineup after all these years, then those should be the SLO 30 and the Mini. I think this new Astro is more like a modernized re-interpretation of the old Astroverb. Cheers!
I was just thinking the same. Was there a Decatone as well? My only Soldano back in the early 2000s was a 50w Lucky 13 Head with a few added options. It sat on a matching Soldano 4X12 cab, Both items were very heavy which eventually led to my decision to part with them. Admittedly, probably the best sounding amp I ever owned.
This isn’t an Astroverb at all. Mainly because…well, no reverb. But the switching capabilities put it well beyond what the Astroverb was. (That was a great amp. Nice verb on it.)
Anderton's is one of the main reasons I would like to retire to England. Would love to spend my retirement visiting and maybe even working in some capacity for Lee Anderton. Would also have to spend some time at the TPS garage! Would love to share a pint or two with Danish Pete as well.
Yes gents the Soldano “thing” is quite amazing . What’s happening is the way the gain staging works. It has played one of these they will immediately get washed over by these butterfly 🦋 effect or likened to throwing a stone into a pond and then there are these strong ripples they go through with punch, it is so satisfying and will always put a smile on your face ✌️🙃
Sounds great. Super tight sounding, It would be nice if one channel had a little looser gain like a Marshall. Lee is right I have a few Soldano plugins they sound nothing like the real thing.
Wow.Solid amp by Soldano. The use of 6v6 as opposed to el84 like on the Jet city amps, gets it a lot closer to its big brother, the slo100. Solid tones right off the bat! Combo has a Celestion Greenback. This amp will sell like hot cakes!
Check out the video "Tested: Where Does The Tone Come From In A Guitar Amplifier?" by Jim Lill I think you'll be surprised by how little the type of tube affects the tone 😉
Very interesting, but he needs to test the lead tones. Most of these amps have a similar rhythm distortion sound for the most part. The differences are in the gain structure. A Soldano lead channel will obviously have a lot more gain than a fender. A Hiwatt will have a much harder power amp sound.@@nickmanville900
Guys what a great video and what a great amp, I can feel the low end getting pumped in my living room… I had to have this amp the Astro 20 with the vertical 2x12 cab. So happy with it ! All I want to do is play play and play !
Reminds me of something Rheinhold Bogner might design. $2,000 for the head in the U.S. I just ordered an ENGL Fireball 100 B-stock for $1,672, so I'm set, but way to go Soldano.
Sounds truly like an amp that could easily dial in KILLER tones from rock, to hard rock, to metal... but TOP NOTCH tones in each of those sectors. I could see why a lot of rock/blues legends have put a SLO in their rigs. Has a geogeous firm low-end and not some bloated messy low
I had a great Soldano full stack back in the day SLO100 and top and bottom cabs in white. I bought it used from a local mainstream band. I got a good deal on it because they thought it was dead. Turned out the power cord got damaged. I replaced it and it was as good as new.I sold it several years later and regretted it ever since. Always wanted to get my hands on a Snake Skin set up but they are just not in my price range anymore especially when I do not gig anymore.
In my opinion, I use less gain when recording. Every time. It sounds MUCH better. More definition. More punch. Same for mid boosts. Guitar players over do them, they always sound like Fran Drescher's voice in the Nanny. Or they go too far the other way... scoop the mids to much and the guitar disappears, then you need to double the volume.
It's all for clicks mainly. I love the digital stuff, but it can't compare to a tube amp. I've tried everything almost and as good as they sound, it's the feel that doesn't come across. The digital gear ages too quickly as well. Amps from 50 years ago still sound amazing. Digital gear from 10 years ago, I can't say the same thing. You can always sell your tube amps if needed as well. They hold value pretty well. There's plenty of options for everyone nowadays regardless.
Can we please get this channel above 1M? It’s a great channel…funny and informative. Plus I want to win the klon since my Notaklon has not yet been delivered.
I just spent on a Rockerverb MKIII which I adore…but now I’ve half a mind to sell and get this instead 😅 I’m a big Orange guy, but Soldano is by far my favorite flavor of american high gain over Peaveys and Mesas and such. Plus the features are incredible
Pete's dominatrix analogy is apt. However sometimes watching the thing happen is more enticing than actually having it done. Which can end up being more painful and/or comedic than you'd hoped. (That last bit is about having a shit gig definitely not about going to the ER in a gimp suit)
I swear that purple cabinet just gets sexier the more you look at it. After bringing myself to drop 2000 on an amp I didn’t anticipate the unbearable “gotta have you” lust for a purple 212 lol. Just like a dominatrix kickin the ducats outta my coin purse
Great sounding amp and great review. What do you use to hear the sound when actual cab is not used? Is this the same what you use to listen to all modellers when you do reviews?
Two Question here: (1) In a live gig at a medium-size pub with a loud drummer and NO mic on my speakers, could this Soldano Astro-20 watts keep up with a loud drummer in terms of volume? (2) Next question: how does this Soldano Astro 20-watts compare to the EVH 5150iii 50-watts in terms of tone & volume?
So when we say it’s not like the cab, is the PA as high quality as the cab and made for the same dynamic range? My guess is that many venues that would want DI will have a much higher quality sound system that can amplify the sound to anyone.
As this has the IR functionality, I'm assuming that means you don't need to worry about having a Cab attached to this when you power it on? No loadbox required anymore?
Sounds sick, though I do wonder why they haven't made the app/editor more integrated lol, lots of pro audio companies are doing the digitally controlled stuff now, WESaudio/Bettermaker etc, if you're gonna do the digitally controlled thing, do it proper, the apps probs gonna see no use apart from switching IR's lol
Huh. I went looking for Soldano amp videos because I have a Vox AV30 and the Hi-Gain 1 channel is an analogue model of a Soldano SLO-100. I’m surprised at how close Vox got. It’s certainly not a perfect emulation by any means, but if you tweak the Vox AV30 or AV60 enough, you can actually get something that sounds reasonably close to some of these sounds. However, the Soldano obviously has better low end and more gain. The Vox isn’t going to make anyone give away their SLO-100 or Astro. But if you can’t afford those, there are options available.
The SLO-100 is from the late 80s. Thus the “decades” comment. The SLO-30 is the same design as the 100 but only at 30 watts. It is a fairly recent amp.
I’m also on the other side of that. I normally like his noodling around but not this time. Understand that we all get off days playing guitar when your hands & ears just won’t work well together.
Why the hell do you need a Tube Screamer when the damned amp already is one? Nice amp. Price puts it out of reach for many, though. Something worth saving for.
I´m not sure at all about buy it, many doubts, the sound sometimes looks some digital for me, strident, and i listen couplings at low volume) , and i don´t understand why use IR´s using a real passive cabinet (They are passing the sound throught the IR cabinet, and after through the real cabinet)
The IR's are for going to front of house, recording device, or FRFR cab and the signal still goes straight to the cab with no IR's affecting it, you wouldn't want that, I don't think, lol.
Great as always..You could write settings for amp and guitar like ``bass, treble, mid, volume on guitar``..maybe some of us have same guitars and we can hear the difference of the amps :D

So that's where all the good tone went!
Yep. M/B Mark VII has it as well. There is no excuse for real players to use sims now.
Hughes and Kettner have been including internal load boxes and the di built-in for a long time.! I have a tone Meister 20 it's awesome!
Yea I haven't seen a built in dummy loads on anything.... Except the Engl mini heads, mark v25, rev g20, Peavey invective and numerous other amps that have been around 5+ years and have a built-in load.
i modded my Plexi 20 studio with a passive load and a ir loader is amazing i can go live or record at home with the same sound 5 Min setup
Best tone I’ve heard out of the Andertons studio in a long long time!
Good Lord! You guys have had a ton of amazing amps on this channel, but that is one of the best sounding amp demos I have ever heard.

When Pete said the dominatrix thing my eyes were opened and I immediately ordered a slo 100 with 4 x 12 cab. Thanks Pete
What a beautiful sounding amplifier 🥹
I used a Soldano 20 watt combo once. It didn't have a lot of headroom, and that is what I needed at the time, but the overdrive tones were glorious.
Holy lord that thing sounds AMAZING!!!!
The SLO is still an awesome amp. You can just plug in, no pedals or anything else and the sound will still leave you speechless.
Needs a reverb pedal
I like the astro better oddly enough and it has alot more versatility as well. Also about $1k less so there's another win for astro
Great tones! I like this kind of boutique overdriven amp tones way more than the thick honk of the D styles everyone drools over. It can do really high gain but not limited to it.

And the Jet City stuff, too.
Scrolled for this the second he said "basically one amp"
I was just thinking the same. Was there a Decatone as well?

Yes Soldano made loads of different amps. Have a 90s Hot Rod 50 and it still sings!

4 galaxy's wow and 2 overdrives - are we in heaven?? 😂😂 I love the sound using single coil pups
Astroverb, reverbosonic, hot rod, avenger, atomic, lucky13, slo, now ASTRO. All excellent. Mike is a true genius.
I purchased this amp about 2 months ago and definitely love it!

Listening through Genelec 8040s which I think are the same as the Anderton's studio - It sounds absolutely amazing.
The clean distorts like Townshend liked it - Danisk Pete mentioned the Princeton amp.
I haven’t touched my Smallbox 50 or Twin Sister since getting the Astro 20.
IS THAT A BURNS TRI SONIC AT THE NECK, HELL FIRE THAT THING IS GOOD, GREAT VID GUYS.
Les Paul makes everything sound good! That amp cooks

$2,000 for the head in the U.S. I just ordered an ENGL Fireball 100 B-stock for $1,672, so I'm set, but way to go Soldano.

You know the shit is real, when Pete drops to D as the gain increases... on both guitars :D
Wow, it sounds awesome! What kind of bar stools are you guys sitting in?
Great craic as always. Cheers lads.

Do it friend. ❤
Liked for Pete’s dominatrix comment.
That dude in the baby blue 💙🔵 hoodie could make a stick sound awesome 👍😎
I don't know why, but I was surprised to hear Pete play Beastie Boys. Nice.
So is it a new amp? Or the Atomic 16 with modern features?
have you guys done a video on the best value studio monitors ?
im happy to see its not crazy expensive....
The astroverb has been around for over 20 years.
I think this is just an updated version.
Every Amp should have a Master 2 for Solo Boost.
Mark Knopfler has been using Soldano’s even for cleans so some buy them for cleans too Mr.Lee (admittedly not many)
Sounds like a Victory V30 to me. That's great!
Nothing like it
Two Question here: (1) In a live gig at a medium-size pub with a loud drummer and NO mic on my speakers, could this Soldano Astro-20 watts keep up with a loud drummer in terms of volume?
(2) Next question: how does this Soldano Astro 20-watts compare to the EVH 5150iii 50-watts in terms of tone & volume?
I remember starting out having basically nothing! Just a gibson custom and a soldano 100, it worked just fine
What is the tele Pete is playing. Sounds incredible and great playing as always from Pete
His new Chapman Signature
🙏@@brymills
The tone reminds me a lot of the PRS Archon 50 amp head
Nothing like it

So is it guitar amp through the cabinet or line out with IR or is it amp through cabinet and line out with it if you want?
Damn that sounds good.
Santana MADE PRS & the SLO 100. Syrupy buttery Europa Tone.
Is this just a digital head with a few valves to keep the room warm?
No. Lee tells you what the valves are in both the pre and power section
It’s all tube up to the power stage, where you can go tube/cabinet or IR/load box/DI. Has it all.
Don't forget some guy named Eddie Van Halen used the SLO on the f.u.c.k. tour!
Huh. I went looking for Soldano amp videos because I have a Vox AV30 and the Hi-Gain 1 channel is an analogue model of a Soldano SLO-100. I’m surprised at how close Vox got. How would this amp take pedals as well as how good is the master volume for home playing say between 80-90dB?
Where is it made?
Hand built in the US. I found that on the Soldano website directly as I couldn’t see it mentioned anywhere else
Does it matter?
Of course it matters where something is made.
Pete was playing my 90's drop D tune.I claim I wrote that one.
Ahh yes, and I thought I wrote Spoonman.
@@bmoneybby It was in Seattle , and the 90's must have been something in the air.
Ajars! It's a hard word for a swede😊
Guys, great demos, as per usual. Although, I must say, from a viewer’s perspective, the continuous talking over one another gets a little frustrating…
Give Pete that Soldano amp for a month…he’ll be a metal head….i guarantee
Sorry im holding out for a 5 galaxy rig. Minimum.
What's the point of a 4X12 emulation if they only mic'd up 1 or 2 speakers on it? Or did they mic the 4 speakers? 🤔
The answer to that question is a very deep rabbit hole and will require research on your part.
Does it go to 11?
"it's the difference between..... bleep...." i can only imagine where Pete went with that... lol
Is the SLO-30 older than 20 years? I thought it came out more recently than that.
The SLO-100 is from the late 80s. Thus the “decades” comment. The SLO-30 is the same design as the 100 but only at 30 watts. It is a fairly recent amp.
@@GraniteSoundtrack ah okay, that makes sense.
