It just dawned on me that the dynamic of Cochise and Preach’s friendship archetype was similar to Harper Stewart and Lance Sullivan from “The Best Man”. You have your alpha male who’s great at what he does (sports wise) and is a ladies man then you have Harper who’s a bit of the opposite career and personality wise (Author) but you still acknowledge him due to being friends with the popular alpha but he’s also able to stand out on his own. In both films we also deal with friendship being in jeopardy after the friends (Both Harper and Cochise) sleep with their homeboy’s (Lance and Preach) love interest.
I think Preach is MVP. S/N there was a pilot done for a Cooley High TV show but starring Ernest Thomas as Preach. They scrapped that retooled it moved the setting to LA Ernest Thomas was the only actor they kept. His name was changed to Raj and the show title became What’s Happenin.
Bigg Jah made a GREAT POINT with what he said about Brenda that I never caught on to despite seeing this movie over 1000 times.... "all the girls in the movie wanted Cochise when he walked in the room. She looked at him....and looked away." bro...BAR! Great observation. Up until he showed his interest in poetry to her, Preach was trying to approach Brenda (as he believed) Cochise would if he had of. Once he showed his true self, she finally saw him.
Cochise is one of the coolest characters in cinema. This movie is way before my time. One of my favorite easy. The way Cochise talked to the girl at the party, mannnnnnn smooth.
I was 15 when this came out and we had a little theater near our hood. It was just like the theater in the movie! Everybody from the block on Saturdays. Cochise's death even had knuckleheads with tears in their eyes. Childhood memories just came flooding back. Appreciate y'all.
I find it interesting that the actress, Cynthia Davis (Felton), who played the role of Brenda was only 17-years-old and never went on to do any other roles. She was a beast on screen that I would have loved to have seen her in other films.
Preach is Screenwriter Eric Monte. Cooley High is a true story. He's done interviews about it. Dorothy gave the quarter party. When Monte was working on "Goodtimes" he was asked to write a script about his life. The first time I saw the movie I was surprised he didn't attend the funeral. Now I get why he did it the way he did.
Fun fact: Glynn Russell Turman "Preach" would later play, Colonel Bradford on A different World, and Steven Williams who played "jimmy lee" would play Whitley Gilbert's farther on the same show.
Most people don't realize that Cooley High is loosely based on a true story and the person who wrote the movie is Eric Monte and the character " Preach " is based on his real life. After he made it to Hollywood, he went on to write the screenplays for Good times, The Jeffersons and contributed to the writing for All in the family.
I'm gonna reveal something to all of y'all about a scene in the movie none of y'all realized...the scene where they skip school and run, jump on the back of the bus...Brenda is sitting in the back of the bus!
Stone and Robert were not actors. They were actual thugs. The director approached them in the street. Unfortunately ( since i don’t know real names ) the light skin one died a few years after the release Also most of cast were not actors

This is a good breakdown. 🥂 With the amount of detail you picked up on though I noticed that you got Stone and Robert mixed up with each other a couple times. Stone, Robert and a few extras like the man who answered the door when the white man knocked looking for “Louise” were just people from that neighborhood who got a part in the movie. And yeah, Chicago has beaches and parks. 😂 That train track scene always did puzzle me though since the Lincoln Park zoo where they ditched school at is right there in Lincoln Park…which is a short distance from where Cabrini and Cooley High school used to be.

I like how the director recreated a 1964 Chicago in (1975). Which had become a very
different city 11 years later in music, style and aesthetic.
Stone and Robert were really hired off the street, they were neighborhood gangsters

Cooley High is a CLASSIC! The guys made some great points, but for me, Preach is the MVP. Great job gentlemen.
Cochise Death HAS TO BE THE SADDEST EVER BECAUSE HIS FAMILY WAS SO POOR HE WAS THEIR WAY OUT
His death wasn't sadder than Nathaniel "Cornbread" Hamilton from "Cornbread, Earl and Me."
Fun fact: Glynn Russell Turman "Preach" would later play, Colonel Bradford on A different World, and Steven Williams who played "jimmy lee" would play Whitley Gilbert's farther on the same show.
So happy you guys did this movie. This was more like my life than Boys, Juice, NJ Drive all of them. For me it was the 80’s.
