I mean, I've only read the manga, and I can already tell the anime is going to focus more on hips and breasts and the like, but even then, the series is about cosplaying and clothing. Any skin showing or girls appearing in their underwear and whatnot is casual or out of necessity. Nothing is ever sexual in nature; it's just fanservice at best.

During the time the show aired, one of the promotional side events was the VA for Gojo making the black dress for Marin's VA. Also, Marin's VA scored her first major role with My Dress Up Darling. Ooooh, I loved this show. It came out around a time I was going through some personal drama, so it has a special place in my heart for picking me right up and reminding me of all the things that made me happy but which I'd been neglecting. Marin is every possible kind of based >.
You got me excited. This show is amazing. Reminds me of the good old days when I watched Onegai Teacher back in the day. Slice of Life Romance animes are pretty epic sometimes, definitely ones with a niche but not disturbing fantasy built into it, and this one it's Cosplay.

But the Sequel kind of dove into the realm of well well, family relationship per se. So ya I think the writer of both likes Taboos. The first with a teacher was okay, and it is a taboo but when he took it to a family level with the sequel, ya no... nooo.
This is a really wholesome anime. My friend showed me this when it was airing and then I was hooked, we watched every week. It's very cute. Hope you have a great time!
This show is so gorgeously animated, CloverWorks thought of every little thing. This anime also has a great dub. Marin is voiced by VA and YTuber Amalee. It can be a little lewd but it's used effectively for comedy. It's most super wholesome. Even the lewd moments are wholesome.

Something I just noticed about this episode coming back to this--the diving slide with lightning reflexes to save the doll in the school's sewing room is set up by the gag of him failing to catch Marin at the beginning when she hits her head on his desk

It was at least interesting as a character aspect compared to "generic everyman".

While my dad was watching this, I ended up saying something like, "I want to write a goddess of love with a personality like Marin" and my dad immediately responded with, "She would make a great Goddess of Love." And I gotta agree. She's such an optimistic, caring, and works to inspire everyone's passion for what it is. (And honestly, the over excitement over the types of clothes from a HENTAI PLOT is more up the alley for the goddess of love archetype that I was thinking of making too. didn't notice that because I didn't watch the first episode when she was explaining the character)
The animation in this show had absolutely no business being this good and consistent all-throughout the show. I imagined a anime like this usually only needs great illustrations and standard animation. But Cloverworks went all out. Can't wait to see your reactions to Marin's shenanigans.

Ngl this anime kinda hit my feeling, it reminds me when i was a child i play alot with dolls together with the girls simply because there's only girls around my neighborhood and im also surrounded by girl cousins at the time. So the boys in class kinda call me a girl for that
The flashbacks at 32:50 were actually important, because even with the flashbacks people called Gojo a simp AND couldn't understand why he decided to help her
Finally you started this, this is like one of the most Alicia's series of all time no joke you're gonna love this can't wait to watch the reaction in a couple hours
When I first saw Marin, I was like, "Hmm, I wonder if she's a gyaru. She acts and dresses like one." As the episode progressed: "Yep, mhm. Definitely a gyaru." (Gyarus are an existing, but waning JP subculture. There are _so many_ variations, each with a specific style of fashion, but they share some common identifiers, such as colored contacts, long fingernails, dyed hair, sometimes they have hair extensions, etc. The tan gyarus are one of those variations.)
One realistic aspect about this series is that gojo’s alienation and fears of rejection all stem from that single interaction with that one girl during his childhood. By the time the people of his class learn about his interests and skills it ends up with people showing genuine interest and support for him. All this time those thoughts that people would reject him because of his interests in dolls was just purely internalized from his past trauma. There are actually some other characters who have had similar experiences to gojo that we meet throughout the manga. Like chitose who had one of his relationships ruined and his outfits thrown out after his then girlfriend found out about his interest in crossdressing cosplay. And also akira who loved manga as a child but when she went to high school her mother threw away her manga collection because it’s “childish” and refused to talk to akira about it. And after a while she’d lie to her mother and say that she wasn’t interested in that stuff anymore and just never opened up to her mother about her real feelings. then during high school she was also teased because of her interests and she further hid her hobbies from other people. Then by the time of college she was spotted by two of her classmates in a store and feared that she would be bullied by them because of what they found out but instead they showed interests in the stuff she liked and invited her to some cosplaying events and became friends. There’s a surprising amount of real in depth emotion for such a lighthearted manga series. Side tangent: I also recommend reading the extra chapters of the manga. They’re about some of the authors, Fukuda Shinichi’s, funny experiences while researching about cosplay/costumes and looking at reference locations for use in the manga, they’re also a great read. And also theres a picture of her cat in each one of them.
2:20 - No lie, I've got PTSD from one of my phone alarms or something. The guy's alarm sounded a bit like it, so it made me jump a bit in my seat. I used that alarm for waking up for an old job, one I really hated, and after getting a new one I had to switch my phone's alarm to a different one cause the old one kept replaying in my head as I tried to sleep and kept me up at night. There are people at my work that use that alarm on their phones for taking naps on their break. They make me jump whenever I hear it, and I'm already wide awake.
The eng dub of this series it good too, and I don't say that very often these days about an anime. The only reason why I even tried watching this in english was cause AmaLee voices Marin....and she nails it!
see i belong to the same group of people when it comes to helping as your fiance....i almost never help people without being asked first for a very simple reason there are so many times where i have met someone who got angry because i 1. did not do the help in the way they wanted the thing to be done 2. did not feel like they wanted help or believed they could do it just fine alone so at this point im just like aight...then im just not gonna help people until they ask to avoid the potential of them getting angry also sometimes people just assume you are trying to get something in return for the sudden help that you just dont wanna deal with that XD
Gojo's sewing machine is ancient! No wonder it's broke down. I have a sewing machine left from my late mother and it's much more modern even though it was made like in 1960s (it looks kinda like the one they have in classroom in the anime). The needle plate was badly damaged over the years of use so it was virtually unusable. I couldn't find the spare one anywhere. Incidentally, the company where I worked ordered stainless steel parts cut with laser, and I was able to squeeze in my draft of the needle plate. It fit just fine and the machine was restored to working condition! Not that I really sew anything, but having a sewing machine is just convenient for clothes repair and fitting.
Finally found a job back into my industry post-covid so I've busy with work. Then, i worked too hard and caught a lung infection (with complications in my bronchus too) and boss drove me to a hospital and be like "dude, you gotta take it easy. When was the last time you have a proper rest and catch up on your hobby?" Thus now, I'm lying in a hospital ward and watching Alicia again. Lol. And oh my, Alicia is watching My Dress-up Darling?! I suppose getting hospitalized ain't all too bad.

While my dad was watching this, I ended up saying something like, "I want to write a goddess of love with a personality like Marin" and my dad immediately responded with, "She would make a great Goddess of Love." And I gotta agree. She's such an optimistic, caring, and works to inspire everyone's passion for what it is. (And honestly, the over excitement over the types of clothes from a HENTAI PLOT is more up the alley for the goddess of love archetype that I was thinking of making too. didn't notice that because I didn't watch the first episode when she was explaining the character)

The animation in this show had absolutely no business being this good and consistent all-throughout the show. I imagined a anime like this usually only needs great illustrations and standard animation. But Cloverworks went all out.

when Mother's Basement first talked about it Jeff said that he had seen anime that spent less money on giant robot fights than this show spent on Marin bouncing around in a bikini.
Ngl this anime kinda hit my feeling, it reminds me when i was a child i play alot with dolls together with the girls simply because there's only girls around my neighborhood and im also surrounded by girl cousins at the time. So the boys in class kinda call me a girl for that
The flashbacks at 32:50 were actually important, because even with the flashbacks people called Gojo a simp AND couldn't understand why he decided to help her

I'm not someone who usually watches romcoms of any sort, but this show was a rare and very welcome exception.
The escape from many tropes is one of the things I love about this show XD
When I first saw Marin, I was like, "Hmm, I wonder if she's a gyaru. She acts and dresses like one."
As the episode progressed: "Yep, mhm. Definitely a gyaru."
(Gyarus are an existing, but waning JP subculture. There are _so many_ variations, each with a specific style of fashion, but they share some common identifiers, such as colored contacts, long fingernails, dyed hair, sometimes they have hair extensions, etc. The tan gyarus are one of those variations.)
You got surprised there because the mangaka and director did a kick ass job of building suspense.

I remember thinking differently of this girl until she started spouting facts at Gojo. She is so kind and considerate, and I love her.
One realistic aspect about this series is that gojo’s alienation and fears of rejection all stem from that single interaction with that one girl during his childhood. By the time the people of his class learn about his interests and skills it ends up with people showing genuine interest and support for him. All this time those thoughts that people would reject him because of his interests in dolls was just purely internalized from his past trauma.
There are actually some other characters who have had similar experiences to gojo that we meet throughout the manga. Like chitose who had one of his relationships ruined and his outfits thrown out after his then girlfriend found out about his interest in crossdressing cosplay.
And also akira who loved manga as a child but when she went to high school her mother threw away her manga collection because it’s “childish” and refused to talk to akira about it. And after a while she’d lie to her mother and say that she wasn’t interested in that stuff anymore and just never opened up to her mother about her real feelings. then during high school she was also teased because of her interests and she further hid her hobbies from other people. Then by the time of college she was spotted by two of her classmates in a store and feared that she would be bullied by them because of what they found out but instead they showed interests in the stuff she liked and invited her to some cosplaying events and became friends.
There’s a surprising amount of real in depth emotion for such a lighthearted manga series.
Side tangent: I also recommend reading the extra chapters of the manga. They’re about some of the authors, Fukuda Shinichi’s, funny experiences while researching about cosplay/costumes and looking at reference locations for use in the manga, they’re also a great read. And also theres a picture of her cat in each one of them.

2:20 - No lie, I've got PTSD from one of my phone alarms or something. The guy's alarm sounded a bit like it, so it made me jump a bit in my seat. I used that alarm for waking up for an old job, one I really hated, and after getting a new one I had to switch my phone's alarm to a different one cause the old one kept replaying in my head as I tried to sleep and kept me up at night. There are people at my work that use that alarm on their phones for taking naps on their break. They make me jump whenever I hear it, and I'm already wide awake.

The eng dub of this series it good too, and I don't say that very often these days about an anime. The only reason why I even tried watching this in english was cause AmaLee voices Marin....and she nails it!

see i belong to the same group of people when it comes to helping as your fiance....i almost never help people without being asked first for a very simple reason
there are so many times where i have met someone who got angry because i
1. did not do the help in the way they wanted the thing to be done
2. did not feel like they wanted help or believed they could do it just fine alone
so at this point im just like aight...then im just not gonna help people until they ask to avoid the potential of them getting angry
also sometimes people just assume you are trying to get something in return for the sudden help that you just dont wanna deal with that XD
Gojo's sewing machine is ancient! No wonder it's broke down. I have a sewing machine left from my late mother and it's much more modern even though it was made like in 1960s (it looks kinda like the one they have in classroom in the anime). The needle plate was badly damaged over the years of use so it was virtually unusable. I couldn't find the spare one anywhere. Incidentally, the company where I worked ordered stainless steel parts cut with laser, and I was able to squeeze in my draft of the needle plate. It fit just fine and the machine was restored to working condition! Not that I really sew anything, but having a sewing machine is just convenient for clothes repair and fitting.
I loved watching this live seeing her freakout thinking this was going to turn into a hentai was just priceless. 😂

Finally found a job back into my industry post-covid so I've busy with work. Then, i worked too hard and caught a lung infection (with complications in my bronchus too) and boss drove me to a hospital and be like "dude, you gotta take it easy. When was the last time you have a proper rest and catch up on your hobby?"
Thus now, I'm lying in a hospital ward and watching Alicia again. Lol. And oh my, Alicia is watching My Dress-up Darling?! I suppose getting hospitalized ain't all too bad.
