We had a feed store in central Arkansas in the 90's. There was one sheller in the store when we bought it, and we got a second sheller after the first year. We bought pinkeye purplehull seed by the 50 lb. bag in spring, and would have both shellers running in the fall - plus a customer who came by and picked up all the hulls for her pigs! This brings back such memories . . .
@@kathybruton2186 Hey Kathy I didn't draw any plans , I just built mine off memory of a sheller that a feed store had before they closed the doors . I just used the operation theory design of the machine . So far I've found that it will shell peas , red beans , butter beans and pintos . It will not shell the ole Ford hook large limas . Maybe say it like this , it will shell em but the large beans will not go thru the screen . It took me approx 3 1/2 months to build in my spare time . I just bought my pea sheller this year from Taylor and I love it. Never tried canning pink eyes before but will definitely do it NEXT year as my freezer door is full of quart bags of these peas!
We had the worst drought in 30 years here in TX and our pink eye purple hull stole the show!! Strong beautiful plants that produce when times are hard! Thanks for the footage brother
I absolutely love Purple Hull Peas. My mother in law and Father in law, may they Rest In Peace, always had a big garden every year and they planted lots of Purple Hulls. Delicious! I so regret not learning from them about growing a successful garden. Oh, and my mother in law canned and also froze the vegetables.
I got a sheller just like it. I bought it about 7 years ago. I even shell out lady finger white peas with it. One of the best investments I ever purchased. Time saver and finger saver...
Got a suggestion from S. Calif citrus country. As your trees mature enough to withstand it, trim the trees three feet off the ground to prevent citrus leaf miners. Their early life cycle is in the soil. By trimming up high enough, you give them less opportunity to become a real threat to your trees.
Wow, $700? I know I bought mine around 1988. A gal I know could get them @cost, so she got mine for me. I think I paid around $175. That was a lot, but my 2 human shellers had gone off to college & I wasn't getting enough done by myself. Takes longer to clean that dang sheller than to shell a bushel basket of peas. I stopped loaning my sheller out because no one cleaned it well. Have to take it apart to get all the membrane out.
aww Danny, where's the fun in a mechanical pea sheller? hahaha. But I have to admit, as a young girl living in Texas I loved loved sitting outside with the aunts and Gramas shelling peas and beans. I miss those days so much.

That really made short order of pea shelling. Now sometimes sitting on the front porch shelling peas or beans is a relaxing afternoon. But this pea sheller is a gem when you need to get it done.
Good morning Danny and Wanda, enjoyed the video, my peas are just about finished here, we have to plant slightly earlier than y'all, my grandfather taught us to plant around the middle of June and beyond, he said they wouldn't be wormy if we waited later to plant, that's a nice sheller there to, that would be a great tool to have. God bless y'all. Brandon
We have an electric pea sheller my husband’s grandfather bought 50+ years ago. It still works. My husband came in yesterday with the manual pea sheller his grandmother used before grandpa bought the electric one. It attaches to the counter like an old meat grinder. We have no idea how old it is.
Looks like the one I owned in the early 80s. I lived in Reynolds, GA. Mine didn't have all the safety features, like the cover over the belt or the cover over the rollers. But I LOVED it!
I have canned 40 qrts and 45 pints of field peas this year..I have one of the shellers and I love it..Thanks for sharing...I tried the Carolina Dimple and the pink eye's this year.. My favorite kind is the Colossal but they froze out several years ago and I couldn't find the seeds this year.. Field peas are the best peas for sure.
Thank you for sharing how you canned your peas. I have canned them twice and both times the water siphoned out of the jars leaving about an inch of peas exposed. They were still edible, but the exposed peas turn grey…not very pretty. I will definitely follow your recipe next time.
Thank you so much for sharing. I learn so much from every video you folks put up. I don't have a farming/gardening background but love my garden and all the fresh food, expanding all the time.

Love Your Videos . I've been gardening for years and still learn new methods of gardening . Some good some not so good . Question , Do I still need to pressure can fully cooked and seasoned October Beans or is a 30 minute water bath sufficient??
I had a thought - I was reminded of an episode of Moonshiners (or something similar) where they'd gotten a pickup truck full of sugar cane, and used an old wringer/washer to squeeze the juice out of the cane. Made me wonder if the wringers on the pea sheller could be utilized in a similar fashion . . .
Man oh man, us kids used to shell bags and bags by hand daily. My fingers would sometimes be sore but just when you thought last of the bag out came another full one😂😂😂

Every time I watch your channel I see something I want to raise. Now you got me wanting to plant some purple hull peas next year. The last year I raised them I canned about 30 quarts of them.
I found that sheller on Amazon for $835. Many different pea shellers are listed for less but that Taylor one is the only one I see that's made in the USA. I'm going to keep my eye out for a used one. Can you use it for beans too like for shelling dry Cherokee Trail beans? I grew those for black beans this year and it took me several hours to sit and shell a single quart jar full.
Those look great if I can ever get a big enough harvest I will have to try that instead of freezing them. One quick question I noticed the water level had dropped on one of the jars, I have that problem when I did my potatoes where the potatoes aren’t fully submerged in the water after the canning process was finished, is that a major issue?
There's nothing better than purple hull peas, a pan of cornbread and a little fried okra on top of the peas. Ya'll just made me hungry, now I need to go take out some peas for dinner.
