      I use 50-100ft leads with my dog's and practice letting them get a ways away then call them back. Once you have the recall down 100% you can let the dog off lead... Also helps if you can find a fenced in area where you can just let the dog run free and practice without worrying.. no matter how you do it though, it takes time, consistency and patience

      i use a 30ft lead on mine and it really does make a difference. They like the freedom AND they give themselves a hard self correction when they decide to take off at a full sprint at dogs or squirrels. takes one or two time and they stop. its pretty funny too lmao

    My 10 month old GSD is exactly like that dog, running around frantically. Around other dogs she often gets lightly bit and chased due to this. Hopefully she grows out of it but if not would love to see the process of having them not be so frantic.

    I wish the facilities were near to me as my dog exhibits a lot of the various issues. We got him at 4 months as essentially a rescue - he was grossly underweight and it took a while to get over trust issues. He's supposedly lab/GSP mix, but has a brindle coat so who knows what else is in there. He is currently just about 11 months. He is high energy, stubborn yet sensitive, smart, likes to chase other dogs especially smaller ones (prey drive), had a mouthing issue from early on, etc. He is crazy when meeting new people and dogs so we're focusing on meeting more people and dogs (desensitizing & correction). We're working on all the issues with a lot of techniques learned from Beckman. Unfortunately, it hasn't been like in the videos where the dog is a completely different dog after one session. Maybe we're doing some things wrong, idk. He is changing and we'll get there eventually because it'd be an injustice not to have a well socialized pup, but dang some days are frustrating...

    Awesome video! You put out such good advice. When I first came across your videos, I wasn't sure if I liked your style. But after about two, maybe three videos, I was hooked.
    I subscribe to a few other trainers, but there's something about your style or presentation that I really like. Your advice and tips are very logical. You don't sugar coat. That's why I wasn't sure in the beginning if I would like your videos. But I actually like that style a lot, because I don't want to mess around with my dog either. She's a Schnauzer rescue who has been in her share of dog fights, and I assume that's why she's so reactive toward dogs. That is one of the two main issues I would like to train out of her.
    By the way, I just switched my subscription to all.

    Thank you for this! Last night my older dog was chasing my hyper puppy this way. I didn't like it. My husband said, "Look, he's finally playing with her.... Leave him be." But, I knew this wasn't playing, this was prey drive. I could see it in his eyes. I questioned myself, though, and let it continue. Luckily, nothing happened. My older dog is 65lbs and my puppy is 16lbs. Now I know that if I see this again I will stop it. Thanks so much for the video!

      I have the same problem with my ACD rescue. She's in the teenager phase, but I think I screwed up by not taking her chasing seriously enough when she was small and weak. The more I watch these videos, the more I see how screwed up she is, but I can't seem to fix it. If she doesn't play with other dogs, she starts mouthing me and if she doesn't chase a dog it's really hard to tire her out. I did one hour on the flirt pole yesterday - 2 sessions where she was panting hard -as well as a long walks and she still was wide awake at night. I hope in the year your dog has calmed down a bit.

    Another awesome vid! I watch my fog like a hawk when at the dog park. I will yell if my dog starts acting like a jerk. I will also yell at other dogs who are jerks too. It amazes me how people will not correct their dog or even watch their dog at the dogs park. Thankfully my dogs are well behaved when around other dogs at the dog park and mind their own business. Thanks to years of us helping them not be jerks at the fog park.

    Hey just watched this video and I have learned a lot. just one quick question, when you mentioned dog fights, do you mean dogs nibbing each other at the dog park? like theres no blood but just saliva on each other.
    Thanks

    • @donion2122
      @donion2122 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he meant real dog fights. You’ll know when it’s a fight when you know it should end right away. It’s uncommon at dog parks, but some signs include: teeth showing with closed jaw or curled lip, ears flat against head, lower/deeper gargle-ey growls than normal, tail straight, hackles up, the dog that’s less dominant or the one who’s losing the fight will probably have its tail tucked, the bodies of the dogs are stiff, one dog will probably be the one who wants to leave (sometimes appearing to become submissive in the moment), the dogs don’t play after they stop fighting, the dominating dog (the one winning) might be looking away completely, one dog might be giving the losing dog (the submissive one) a side eye look while growling or pinning down or walking away. It’s not uncommon foe the dominant/winning dog to walk away first, but it l won’t be the one with its tail between its legs.
      Hope this helped.

Is there any other way to prevent the locked in chasing?

    • @mamazcarter2202
      @mamazcarter2202 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When your dog plays to rough with the cat go in with the “ay” then go in between your dog and cat so that your dog knows that he can play with the cat but not play too rough. I hope I explained this in a way you can understand😭

    • @MIZZKIE
      @MIZZKIE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your dog keeps doing it again, it means that he isn't taking you seriously.
      Do you just give the correction and let your dog go? You have to let your serious attitude linger so that your dog acts submissive. If you do it properly, he'll get the message in 2-3 tries.
      Another major things that most dog owners don't do properly is to give a warning or correction right before the actual bad behaviour occurs. If a dog does the bad behaviour, it's a win for him because he got to do what he wants to do that you don't. That is self-reinforcement. You need to avoid bad kinds of reinforcement.
      Also it it is harder to make a dog listen to you in a high level of excitement = playing rough. Correct before it gets to that level. This is very important because puppies are easily excited.

    I'd be curious to know from start how to stop a dog that has a very rough playing style with everyone. She always tries to bulldoze other dogs, jump on, bite neck and is loud as hell. She stops for a good 10 seconds when you tell her off but after just goes back to doing the same and it seems like she doesn't even know how to play any other way. It's very frustrating to every time be only spending time telling her no, no, no about everything since as long as she interacts with other dogs it becomes like that. Does not take a hint from other dogs either.

    You mentioned follow through, the example of if you tell them to get off the couch and they don't, you make them. What if the dog growls or shows his teeth when you try to move him from couch, bed, wherever he wants to stay?
    I know my way can't be right, I have one of the kids knock on the door so he runs to check it out. Gets him out of my spot without the confrontation anyway. He's my daughter's dog, she just pulls him down from the spot and tells me not to trick him with the door, but he's kinda stubborn and thinks he's the boss.
    He can also get aggressive with our 6 month old puppy, but maybe that's another question for another day. ☺️
