The "magic cat" is my favorite 😅 if you have ember active and summon the Witch's Infernal Familiar non-combat pet she reacts to it by saying "it's wearing a little hat, that's adorable, can I teach it a spell or two?" 😂
Update: apparently they all do it, because isobel when you have her active and summon the Jerall rescue dog she says "by the divines, look at that dog, who's a good dog, who's a good dog" 🤣
Nice video. Also remember that companions have some annoying dislikes, going to Hollow City for the weekend shopping trip? Send Zerith away. Going on a crime/murder spree? Don’t bring Isobel or Bastian, Going fishing? Don’t bring Ember, etc.
Very well done. I would love to see more companion builds because I want to see how best to use the different companions. I use them often and enjoy having them out for their perks.
I would've never known any of this, since I just leveled companions as I thought which role they'd work best in, so now I'm reconsidering their roles thanks to this!
Zerith insane tank with his heals and sword and board shield ward, Isobel now crying in a corner… and about fear, it makes enemies just stand still and do nothing, not running away from u
Ember ult engine light armor for Haste, use Refresh to reduce all abilities by 5 sec, Parallel mage guild ability adds 50 ult. run ability cooldown armor, cheaper armor is ult gen. Then, the last two abilities, choose healing or damage doesn't matter. She will spam them so whatever you prefer.
I’ve been deciding which role to build them into based on their ultimate. Like with Azandar, his ult is an AOE debuff. And many of his skills are buffs. So I equipped full gear to extend buffs and debuffs and now he’s a unique buff bot support.
I think it should have been mentionned that Sharp has a high damaging ultimate that ALSO executes. My setup has a tooltip of around 30k damage on the summon and the execute is a 150% increase below 25% which amounts to around 75k. This will be more impactful on bosses than anything else for sure but that is a reason why I gave sharp the mages guild skill to generate 50 ultimate because I want those things to pop out. I also have mine set to bow so that his behavior will push Sharp to be in the distance to proc off balance with top priority swoop. Alternatively I guess 2h gives the execute spammable to give him more executes. Edit: my biggest gripe with Zerith-Var is that his being a necromancer is not being taken real advantage of. His 1 corpse generator is a tank skill and his 1 corpse consuming skill is a DPS one. So no matter how you set Zeirth-Var up he has to take from 2 different roles to do his necromancer namesake. In bosses that don't create adds this lowers his value too much. I think each skill line should have had 1 corpse generator and 1 corpse consuming skill. Heck he has the healing spirit mender skill which for players creates a corpse but doesn't for Zerith, this is just sad. Also, his skull skill is incidentally lesser than the scythe in every measure except range. Same cooldown and same damage but the scythe hits an AoE and heals Zerith. Definitely the skull should create a corpse.
Can you please do another on what gear each companion is best with, for maximum effect. All that jewelry from the Breton event (Nov/Dec 2024) has helped with each companion, but which gear is best on each?
For the majority of builds it comes down to cooldowns, you get enough quickened for a good rotation, then fill out the rest with role gear, soothing for a healer, aggressive or shattering for a dps, and vigorous or bolstered for a tank build. There are some niche builds, such as an augment build for companions with good buffs, prolific for an ult build. Once you get your cooldowns down to 6 and 12 seconds you can usually arrange a nice rotation, struggling to get them down lower might be better for a build, but getting all the purple quickened gear for that is tough. If you don’t want to focus on quickened, then go with whatever role gear you can get, eg the difference between 12 vigorous and 12 bolstered for a tank, or a mix of each, is generally small in most content, it then comes down to more vigorous pieces for skills that scale off health.
I went the route of "if they're on the floor they're worthless." So after much testing I ended up putting them all in heavy armor with their role deciding what traits. Isabel seems to be the best tank in my opinion. So she has all reduce damage taken traits and reduce cooldown. Sharp is my healer so he has all heavy with reduce cooldown across the board.
My plan was leveling Isobel as my tank, Mirri as my healer and Zerith just because...well buff kitty cat. Tanlorin is kind of annoying, so I'm ignoring her. Frankly wish I'd just bought Zerith without her. I might go back and get Bastian, he just seemed kind of boring next to Mirri, but I'll admit a bias towards Dunmer :P
Honestly same Tanlorin just doesn't do it for me. Can't stand listening to her and her design is an eye sore. Zerith on the other hand his voice is amazing and so was his story. Not as great on damage compared to sharp but he offers great utility and I just like having him around
i think azandar is just blanket the best, vuln is probably harder to get than breach and his shield also shields you, plus he has his own taunt, not that youd wanna use not a shield but.
I use Mirri as a dps to compliment my destruction/healer templar. We took down Scalecracker (the crab world boss in Stonefalls) in a reasonable amount of time (probably around 5mins)
Nice breakdown of their utility! As far as being able to stand having them around all the time... Ember wins for me. BUT she sucks to have around while thieving because anytime you get caught thieving she freaks out. I don't spend a lot of time pickpocketing so her perk isn't very attractive. Bastien is a big irritating wart though he is a good tank. Tanlorin is pretty okay at all roles. Don't like her much as a tank but it's the role I'm using her in as I try to get her to max lvl. Mirri I actually find to be quite entertaining but her hatred of bugs is a no for me. Isobel is pretty good at tanking and a pleasant companion to have around, but her "morality" is a pita. Sharp is decent at everything and not irritating. Has a great perk but I maxed him out so don't actually need him around to use it. Azander is just too irritating though he is decently competent. Still haven't tried Zerith Var but this video has piqued my interest in him.
Bastion is my pocket healer for my DDs. Hes great for that. Ember does DD for my DK tank. I don't care for Mirri as a companion since I mostly run NBs and its non complementary. Sharp is great but I'm still levelling him. I just got Zereth and he's quite fun. I have him with a lowbie and its really helping them level.
My biggest observation from experience is that any companion that works in close-combat rather than from distance is much more likely to die. I haven't had a lot of luck with them as tanks because, well, they die fast in any boss content.
Good list, I agree. +1 There is interest in a deeper understanding of companion mechanics!... The tooltips are only half the story. Two thoughts. Your analysis rightly highlighted the buffs/debuffs companions bring (as their greatest impact). I wonder if a "Support" role alongside tank/healer/dps would have been intersting, and might have changed the list. Mirri is the best healer, but she's barely mediocre support (only her ultimate). Secondly, companion abilities are balanced by their cooldown. Describing what each ability does without discussing the high/low uptime misses what makes great companion builds (good ability uptime). You are clearly thinking of this when talking about racial bonuses, but you don't mention that Sharp has a unique set of skills, having more 12 sec cooldown abilities, which allows him some really effective quickened builds.
As far as I know it was fixed. Sharp used to be bugged so that extra fishing events including both the Wrothgar Crab-Slaughter-Crane fish and Apochrypha Lurker catch wouldn't trigger. However they patched that and it has been working as intended for me since then.
Azandar as healer pure gold he’s the best.👍🏾 Sharp as dps too good, Zerith as Tank yep he’s a awesome tank, left Tanlorin as dps, don’t use the others that much will start using them again.
This was great even though I finally geared my companions last week but they where basically this list, I just wish we didn't have to do the companion quest on every alt
Ah yes companions, what would eso world look without them I wonder.. tbf they are as useful as non-combat pets, fun to have them around for some strange reason but that's that😅
I max out all companions but my favorites that I always use are iso and ember.. best or not I just like their personalities and va's the most. tanlorin came pretty close tho, they have some great lines, "hehe heavy sack".
I feel like this list is too niche. The racial passives are too tiny to make any difference. Every companion has skills for every role. Weapon and guild lines cover the remaining gap. In “high end gameplay” you’re not going to be using companions anyway.
Jake yay now I get to look forward to this in morning ! Side note, i made 6 mil today on ps5 in 1 hour and I highly doubt that will EVER happen again 😂, and no i can't say how cause then will get nerfed like banner did LOL

Mirri and Tanlorin both hates Dark Brotherhood
I find it funny everytime i remember ember is a cat who hates fish
@@Mad_MedzI’m sure Ember loves *eating* fish, but fishing? Boring! Maybe if Tamriel had the equivalent of dynamite fishing…
@@Rogue.13 My brother was confused why Ember disliked fishing, when she was a cat. I told him she just didn't have the patience for fishing.
Ember has always been my companion of choice.
Very well done. I would love to see more companion builds because I want to see how best to use the different companions. I use them often and enjoy having them out for their perks.

Still going to use Isobel more, you put her in a short skirt and skimpy outfit and she still wins imo

You got them all cut? Nice.
Bastian has a role of his own, decoration in player houses
Lmao I love the haircut joke. Great vid :)
Awesome vid, as i am collecting companions atm. This is the only youtube channel I must watch every day, so much good info.
'great video, more on gear would be great to
Hell yeah. Companions have been giving me so much to do in the game. And so much utility.
Good video, very helpful
This was super.
I can tell you were proud about your opening joke. 😂😂
Very nice.

So which one is the best tank. You have three in the best any and one in the best tank.
Can you make best build for all companions? Like this skills, this trait etc.
I have totally forgot that you can have the passive of every companions you fully unlock. Have some grinding to do 😂

Zerith is the best plus he loves TOT LOL
It says, the defile is applied to you, not to enemy, same as necros skill

The best companion for all these roles is the ring of the pale order. Dont waste time on these fools
People actually use companions outside of levelling them for their perma buff?
Wow.. as many times as the Companions' names are said by NPC's during their quests, you'd think you could pronounce them correctly.
