This is gonna be great to watch. This series is powerful, and extremely well made. You are also insightful and intelligent, so the reactions are going to be interesting for sure.
The Pacific is the sister series to this. You should give that one a look too if you're not already. It covers marines in the pacific theater in the same war. Which was notably more hellish than the European front.

Hi Bisscute, I highly recommend an infinitly more exciting and entertaining form of warfare: Aerial! Air war is the best! So much better than land based warfare - which is so overdone and just the same old thing. TH-cam reactors rarely react to anything else in the War genre, so please jump down an aerial combat wormhole starting with Memphis Belle (1990) the true story of the first US Army Air Corps B17 bomber plane's crew to complete it's 25 mission tour of duty in Europe during WWII. & Red Tails (2012) the true story of the first African American pilots in the US Air Force during World War 2. George Lucas the star wars guy did the CGI effects for it. + The Battle Of Britain (1969) the desperate fight of Britain's RAF against the German airforce in 1940. Please react to these asap. I love most of your reactions and I'm subscribed :)

If you're going all the way with this...be prepared to grow, laugh, learn and suffer with these characters. The first episode is in some ways my favorite, if only for the innocence and the fact that I know what lies ahead for these men. This was when their biggest threats were "Army noodles with ketchup" and Captain Sobel...it's brilliant, and a true story. Hard to call this a TV show honestly, it's a 12 hour Saving Private Ryan in quality...CURRAHEE! ♠

It’s always funny watching foreigners watch this series when some of them, like Biss, have no idea that that’s Ross from friends. I was surprised, and happy, at the good job he did portraying Sobel back when this first came out on HBO. David Schwimmer, as an actor, went up in my book after this.

    • @garylogan3640
      @garylogan3640 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Sobel was great as a training officer, preparing the men physically, and creating the esprit de corps that enable the men to risk so much for their fellow soldiers, which is essential in an elite combat unit. Unfortunately for him, his abilities in the field, his uncertainty tactically were not up to combat grade, especially for a unit that could quite possibly be forced to fight without support from the main body of the military.

The eye to detail that went into this series is by far one of the biggest reasons on why it is SO WELL LOVED. Not just the amount of effort that went into the book that inspired the series, but the military equipment, the way they talked to each other, the way that they trained for weeks prior to filming, the effort taken to create the locations and the CGI effects woven in. It is simply amazing how much the "little things" actually mattered to the production team and the actors. Such as actors talking to the veterans they were cast to play and taking themselves OUT of a scene if the veteran said that they weren't there at the time. Which is why when you don't see someone in the background, it is because the veteran himself SAID he wasn't there.
And that doesn't even BEGIN to go into the amount of effort that was taken by the production team itself in order to ensure the cast had what they needed (uniforms and props), staff for writing (to avoid "modern slang"), studying of maps to get the best lay of the land possible, or way cities and buildings looked, properly re-created tanks/boats. They just tried to do the absolute best job possible.
And then we have the cast, which should be clear after all these years that some of these actors were going to be "big stars" at some point, or who just simply personalized people who were seen as "legends". Which is difficult to do. You can't always make someone who is a legend simply look like a real human being without someone complaining about how you "disrespected them" in the process. But BoB have some of the best possible "personalities" that makes you actually feel truly connected to people you have never known, but who have made the world we now live in.

Bisscute, I love answering your questions when I can. A Quaker is a Protestant religious community in the United States that started in Switzerland originally. They are pacifists, who usually will not serve in the military. Some of the fellows thought Lieutenant Winters was a Quaker, but he was not.

It should be pointed out NOW, before you get into the series overall.... Lt. Nixon, was the company's "intelligence officer". This meant that he had to look over ALL captured documents to determine which ones were important and which ones were not. He was ALSO responsible for "recon missions" that would provide some knowledge of the land AND enemy forces. Which means that most of his time was spent "scouting ahead" of the company, something that placed him in CONSTANT danger.
And the reason we will see him "sleeping most of the time" is because he was forced to do this scouting late at night. Meaning that he would have to often do his scouting missions between 11pm to 3-4am, when the enemy was asleep. But to prepare for it, he would have to get ready around 9pm, then try to "get into position" over the next hour or two, then get as much info as he could WITH HIS OWN EYES... then sneak back to his own lines, which often could take another hour or two. Meaning that between roughly 9pm to (up to) 6am, he was often doing scouting missions. PLUS, he had to be up for any "daily activity" that the company itself was doing. Meaning that he got probably the LEAST amount of sleep out of the entire company during the war.
So, for anyone who is asking why we "never see Nixon doing anything", that is why. Because what he DID do, he did mostly on his own as well as something that was classified at the time and NOT talked about. Not even after the war because some of the tactics that he used, and perfected, were STILL in use when Ambrose started researching his book. Meaning that Nixon still couldn't talk about it, nor OTHER officers/soldiers in the unit.

They disembarked from the Brooklyn Navy Yard in I943. After completing his deferrment to complete graduate school, my father entered the Navy at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1943. He went on to serve at the chief of ammunition supply for tne Navy in the Pacific theater. As such he served on the staff of the Admiral in charge of Navy supply/logistics. He told me that when you're on the staff of the Admiral in charge of supply, you don't lack for much in terms of supply - they had first call on any supplies. He told me they had fresh pies, ice cream, steak, on a regular basis. Yes, he worked 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week on a heavy cruiser for two years, but he knew that compared to many others he had it pretty darn good, a fact about which I think he always felt a little guilty. He was required to remain in the Navy reserve for several years after the war. His much younger brother later entered the Navy as a carrier pilot in the 1950's....

Nice , Bisscute. I remember when this mini-series was on television. It seemed to last forever. This tells the real life story of the 101st Airbourne. Easy Company. The stories and the names are real. This happened. Our Greatest Generation that lived through WWII and those that served at home and overseas need always be remembered for their bravery and courage. It is because of their service and unselfish sacrifices that we enjoy our freedom today. It is because of them that we speak English today, instead of German. Never has the line between good and evil ever been so starkly drawn throughout the history of warfare. Thanks, Madalina for your thoughts in reacting to it. Nice to watch it again. And with such a beautiful and clever girl as you, this time around. Much peace, love, and happiness, doll. Be seeing you on the next. Shoutout from your longhaired hippy dude in East Tennessee. U.S.A. LOVE YOU and that super sexy European accent and phrasing you have. So fu***ng cute. Later, baby.

    So im former US Army.
The thing about the various Drill Sergeants doing Physical Training with their troops isnt entirely accurate.
They are required to do Physical Training as well, so going for company runs and stuff, its expected for them to participate. Everyone in the Army (and the rest of the US Armed Forces) are required to keep a minimum level of physical fitness and health standards in case they need to be rapidly deployed. This even includes things like regular dental checkups, since something as simple as an infection can mean the soldier isnt as effective in war.
However, this is different than something called a "smoke session," where various forms of physical training are used as punishments. The common thing you hear is "drop and give me fiftt" (pushups)
This can be all sorts of physical activities used as corrective punishments for minor infractions, and it can be from individual soldiers, teams, squads, platoons, etc.
These corrective physical punishments are the times when the trainers or other sergeants dont have to participate, as THEY arent the ones getting punished.
So yeah... two seperate categories of physical training. One that they have to participate in, and one they dont.

You can tell who's not watched Friends when they don't react at all to David Schwimmer appearing lol. Sobel def didn't do "nothing" for them. He was an ass, but he was an awesome drill instructor and made them into the soldiers they became. They were gonna fight a war, it had to be that strict.
I'm excited to see you react to this series. I only watched it for the first time myself about 2 weeks ago, so I'm fairly new to this, but I've already read and watched alot of stuff about it and I've ordered the book that this is based on. You said you like Winters, you're going to love him soon. He's amazing. They all were ❤
Watching this pretty much changed the way I've looked at WW2. Previously I've only really been interested in the Holocaust side of things, and I've unfortunately not thought much about the actual fighting in the war and all the soldiers, but I sure do now. Saving Private Ryan, which I saw very shortly before watching this series, had a part in that too.

    Some important notes:
    - Two different characters are looking to find a Luger (German pistol): Hoobler, who was the guy who was checking out the British soldier’s (dressed like a German) Luger, and Malarkey, who was the dude who said “really? It’s hot in Africa?”
    - (future knowledge) American tanks are typically green with a white star. The most prominent US tank was the Sherman
    - Allied planes are noticeable by their white and black stripes on their wings as seen at the end there - “invasion stripes”

    • @kevinfrank5527
      @kevinfrank5527 ปีที่แล้ว

The reason for the invasion stripes was previous “friendly fire” incidents during invasion operations in the Mediterranean. By this point in the war - and a necessity for this operation - the Allies had near air superiority, meaning their Air Force controlled the skies. So while, enemy aircraft were possible and expected, the greater danger was considered to be the nearly 5,000 ships who might shoot down these planes by “accident”.

So glad you’re doing this amazing show. Best TV of last several decades. Be sure to complete your Band of Brothers journey with the accompanying HBO documentary “We Stand Alone Together,” it serves as a sort of Episode 11 and let’s you hear from all the surviving men in old age and give their thoughts and context from the war and their postwar lives. The quote at the end of this episode is from General Eisenhower - the head honcho General for the Allies in WW2. He went on to be a popular two term president of the US. Also, it was no accident that Guarnere got the letter. It was slipped in his jacket to find. And yes, it affects him on D-Day (see episode 2 and the documentary “We Stand Alone Together.”)

You’re going to enjoy this and learn to love these men. Each of the old men you see being interviewed at the beginning is a real member of Easy company. These are the men whose story is being told. Don’t worry, you’ll get their names as you go. When Bill Garnierre calls Lt. Winters a Quaker, it’s a nickname for a conservative Christian sect The Society of Friends. If you ever saw Quaker oatmeal the picture on the box is William Penn a famous Quaker. Anyway, it’s just a way of saying that he thinks Winters is too uptight to be relatable (even though he respects him a lot). Magnetic declination is when you’re using a map and compass, you have to be aware that the farther north you go the less accurate the compass is because it points to magnetic north instead of true north. So in their map classes the men learn to correct for the difference.

Magnetic declination: The magnetic North pole is not at the geographic North pole so when using a compass you must compensate a certain amount of degrees West or East depending on what part of the Earth you are on in order to know true North by the compass needle.

6:13 "I guess times were different then. This is how you build them up."
Actually, times haven't changed much, and this is how you break them down.
Lt. Sobel is a "Drill Instructor" - D.I. for short.
His job is to break the men down so they are not individuals anymore.
THEN he builds them back up as a team of men who live, work, and fight together.
This is still what DIs do in the military today.
Now, for sure, Sobel is the toughest DI in this whole training base.
Most DIs aren't this harsh, then or now.
On the other hand, most of these men who survived WW2 give at least some of the credit to they extra harsh training from Sobel.
    Harsh? Yes.
But he probably saved a bunch of their lives by being this harsh.

    31:12 "What are skivvies?"
    Slang for underwear. Tighty whiteys.
"How much does all this weigh?"
    A lot.
So much that the Airborne believed that if a man had all this weight on his back in a big backpack and jumped out of a plane, when he hit the ground he would break his legs from the extra weight.
Their solution was to put it all in a canvas bag on a rope and tie that rope to the man's leg.
The back would hit the ground first, so the man's legs and body didn't have that extra weight when his feet hit the ground.
    It was a good idea.
And they practiced it back in Georgia in their practice jumps.
But it didn't work very well in the real combat jumps because Germans on the ground were shooting at the planes.
This shooting caused the pilots to panic.
They needed to slow down but instead they flew too fast to get away from those German guns.
This caused the jumping paratroopers to hit very fast winds when they jumped and many of them lost their supply bag.
Some of them made it to the ground without any guns, bullets, or weapons of any kind.
Hard to fight a war like that.
This is what happens to Lt. Winters in the next episode (not a spoiler since you have already watched it and posted your reaction to Patreon).
But not just him; it happened to a lot of them.

Interesting fact is that Sobel was highly respected as a trainer and genuinely decent person, but was not a great coordinator on the field. He had no spatial awareness and on the move tactics, but he had the finest, most disciplined soldiers. Captain Sobel definitely was not weak. He was the best Drill Sargeant the Airborne ever had during the time.

The opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan where they stormed the beaches happened the morning following these planes taking off the airborne went in behind the invasion force at night. Saving Private Ryan showed the invasion force hitting the beaches by then the Airborne were already on the ground. Had the beach landings failed the airborne would have been trapped and they knew that and went anyway.

    20:18 "What's a Quaker?"
A religious group that began in England almost 400 years ago then most of them came to America for religious freedom.
They're very peaceful and don't like fighting in wars.
If drafted, they usually become "Conscientious Objectors" and refuse to fight for religious reasons.
The movie Hacksaw Ridge is about a famous Conscientious Objector who refused to carry a gun in WWII and still won a Congressional Medal of Honor for saving many lives.
Basically, here in this show, they don't want a Quaker "doing my fighting for me" because Quaker's don't fight - if the guy next to you won't fight, then your chances of dying just went up.

You have officially just finished the calmest episode of the series. From this point on, there will be massive ups and downs, and more than one show's fair share of shocks. Very fitting to the events that occurred during this time in history. You mentioned that you do not cry easily, but I recommend having a tissue handy, as a 'just in case', especially toward the end of the series. I know some people who claim to have absolute hate for people, to the point of not being saddened by what happens to others, who still managed to cry a lot for what happens later. Looking forward to more of your videos!

The magnetic declination they were talking about in training refers to how a compass is calibrated slightly differently depending on where in the world it is being used. The Earth is not exactly in sync when it comes to the magnetic fields, and the actual global maps. It's a bit off kilter. So there is an adjustment capability on good compasses that corrects for this small error, because when you are using a Compass to navigate thru the Country, a small error can eventually become a big error. Correcting for your place on Earth makes it much more accurate. It's a fascinating thing, and learning how to navigate with a compass is also quite a skill to have. There are many utube videos that show you various methods to navigate with a compass, either to a specific location, or with dead reckoning usiing the Compass to set waypoints..

Magnetic declination. When reading a map the grid north of the map isn't the same as the magnetic north on your compass. At different parts of the would the difference is different. The map legend will tell you the difference between the two. You need to adjust for it when switching from compass to map and vice versa. Also the difference increases or decreases each year as the Earth's magnetic center changes. So you have to know when the map was printed and add in that change for ever how many years the map is old.
I've seen people have smoke coming out of their ears trying to figure it out.
It's usually not that many degrees but even miscalculation by a few degrees can put you hundreds of meters off where you are trying to go.

I was a student of Stephen E. Ambrose at the University of New Orleans. He was a great teacher and scholar. He interviewed the older men at the beginning of each episode to write the booknthe show is based on. Those men are the actual men portrayed by the actors in the series. They will not tell you who is who until the last episode. By the way, the money he made from this series was used the start the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

Luger pistols were popular war trophies guys could confiscate and have shipped home through the mail. The same applies to people who may want to have a sidearm sent overseas as well or, in Talbert’s case, having one gifted over to you.
This isn’t the same today. If you capture enemy gear, it’s gonna have to get destroyed.
