Very nice video, well done. I did similar circuit with 2 LEDs similar to the train crossing signal. I also used PIC18F4550 but I programmed it with Assembly code. What do you think about that?
Pickit 3. The main reason is that for several years now, the main software MPLABX, when you press a single button, it'll send your new blinky program to the Pickit3 automatically and it will program your microcontroller, and it'll start blinking right away. Did you notice that when he was ready to put the program on the microcontroller, he started up another program? Nobody does that anymore, they don't need a separate program, it's already built into MPLABX if you use a Pickit3. Also that thing where you have to remove the chip and plug it into this other board (which kinda says Pickit2, but it isn't) is ridiculous. After 3 or 4 programs you get real sick of it. Nobody does that either; they just use a Pickit3 and connect the pickit3 right to the original circuit. You NEVER move the PIC chip. Also, don't buy a Picket 4 or anything newer... waste of money.

Came here to figure out how to connect my pickit 4 to the pic. "Just read the datasheet" was not particularly helpful.
