i DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DON'T CLEAN UP THE PLACE. IF EACH PERSON WOULD CLEAN UP THERE AREA THEN REACH OUT TO THE AREA AROUND . PEOPLE CAN BE POOR AND BE CLEAN AT THE SAME TIME.
I imagine there are plenty of people there willing to pick up the trash but there is no way to get rid of it except for big bonfire. But burning tires is problematic.
That's because the full timers out there are for the most part (not all) bums and junkies and society's rejects that don't give two shits about keeping something looking nice.
Another awesome video! You taught this old Marine Corps Veteran something again. I did not know that was an old Marine Corps base. Slab city is definitely on the bucket list of places to see and who knows how long I will stay. Just like anything else, there is good, bad, and ugly. I love what you do. Thanks again.
Hey folks. This is Bob's video. He can share and say anything he wants to. If he wants to share his philospohy with others, I think that is great. He shares a wealth of information about his lifestyle and incredible helpful how-to info on the nomad life and I appreciate that a lot. Thanks Bob, and thank you for being the generous, caring gentle man you are.
Ronald Rowan - He wasn't assuming what walter thinks! walter SAID what he thinks, and John replied by saying what HE thinks. To say rational is in the mind of the beholder is to say that a schizophrenic who has hallucinations and thinks it's perfectly rational to do something that endangers himself or another is rational. No, there are rational and irrational thoughts. You can have a personal religious belief; but when you start insulting people, telling them they are stupid and going to hell b/c of what YOU believe about them, then you have crossed the line.
I drove through Slab City in the mid 1980's. It was vacant (except for squatters living in the two ammo bunkers) It was really clean and quiet (except for the military war games out past lock 16). It has sure changed. I am glad to see people surviving at this old base. Thanks for the video :)
I used to live in Brawley and am very familiar with the area and have been to Salvation Mountain many times but I never checked out Slab City so this video is very interesting for me.
My wife and I are former Canadian snowbirds. We went to slab city after hearing about the last free place in America a few years ago. We found it incredibly creepy! The garbage blowing around in the wind was disgusting. We spent a couple of hours driving around with our 5th wheel and were very happy to leave and get back to civilizationn.
The trash that seems to be almost everywhere is intolerable. That place looks worse than some of the slums I saw down by the river when I was growing up in the 60's. Like you say.... there are no rules, and it looks like it.
You can get the dumpsters and materials for a clean up donated and the BLM will help too. We have volunteer cleanups at Dumont Dunes and Glamis and they work fine.
Thanks for the info, High Watch. I didn't think it was BLM land but did not know that for a fact. Nothing is ever as simple or as easy as it sounds. Especially when your relying on other people to accomplish something. Cheers!
I would love to go here! I heard about Salvation Mountain in a book called "Weird California". Very interesting! (P.S. as a Christian, I gotta say we ALL need salvation - but I'll be nice and leave it at that).
I've said it before: if I had deep pockets I would love to go in and clean up the trash. Not the art or how people have set up their spaces but just the literal trash. I ask you, what's worse: standing on a street corner panhandling and then spending the night under a bridge or having an RV roof over your head and living rent free? It's good to know there's a place you can go either because you choose to or because you must stay.
100% safe in that place, not safe in that other place...too bad both places are only spitting distance away from each other. I wonder what he would do if he heard some gullible person went there on his recommendation and got into serious trouble with some crazies, got hurt or whatever....
Bob, if possible you should interview some of the residents of Slab City. I know a Canadian RVer who has wintered in Slab City a number of times. He and his wife say that many of the residents of Slab City are average Americans who live there to save money and escape the rules of towns and cities. Many have legal jobs and pay taxes but live in Slab City to save money. There is crime there as in any town but it is for the most part no more dangerous than living in nearby legal towns and cities.
great review of Slab City. I do want to see one of these days! Just to meet all the different people and listen to their stories! Thanks for sharing with us all!!
Fascinating. A true nomadic encampment area. There needs to be places like this. These areas with trash need to be cleaned up. Maybe everyone could pitch in to clean up trash areas
Bob thank you for another great video! I love watching your video's cause I'm not only learning & getting ideas as I would like to travel nomad style once the kids leave home & explore my home country where I live "Australia" but I learning about how your wonderful people in the USA. thank you Bob for making great educational videos.
This place is an insane asylum with no lock on the door ! I can't help but think about the stench of trash and people who bathe occasionally. Marking this place off my list as a place to say "I've been there done that" ! Looks like some place where they film Walking Dead and Zombie movies ! I'm going to take a shower !
oh this totally made me smile. i kid you not, i am up to my ears in homeless ppl and trash here in San Diego. no amount of free is going to make me want to go there, EVER!! Thank you for your honesty and humor.
I haven't been to Slab City yet, but someday. I wonder if anyone does this: if you are nervous going there alone, a small group of people could go together and set up a little compound... safety in numbers... well, I'm sure many people do that. From what I've seen on videos there might be a few problems, but so are there in any city. By the way - people - Carolyn did an excellent TH-cam story on Slab City months ago - it will really give you an appreciation on this other-worldly place! It's worthy of a National Geographic show!
I am loving this series Bob. Thank you for all of the behind the scenes work you do so we can sit in comfort and learn from you. Sorry to see the crack in your windshield. No matter where you live there is always something to fix at "home".
I have seen a lot of TH-cam videos about Slab City and enjoyed this one. I will form my overall opinion about the Slabs good, bad, and ugly after I spend time on my own there as a van dweller when i retire shortly.
I agree. This place looks scary to me. I’d have to stay in a place that felt safer...But the people who live there are happy so good for them. To each his own. I’d love to spend time in the National parks and forests.
In this series, I think Bob's trying to show ALL the options for living rent- or mortgage-free. If he didn't include this, I'm sure there would be a whole bunch of folks calling him out on it. If Slab City isn't your cup of tea (don't think it's mine, to be honest) .... well just move on. As far as his comments on Salvation Mountain, he just said he wasn't Christian, and yes he elaborated on that, but I didn't hear any disparagement of Christians. I'm with him in saying "believe whatever you want, just don't inflict it on me." Keep on with the good job Bob.
Very interesting Bob why you felt the need to express your beliefs on the first part, were you not just showing us Slap City? Bob thank you for the tour, Slap City is depressing.
Thanks for the most balanced and comprehensive youtube video about Slab City. Some have presented it as a magical commune, while others have insisted that it is hell on earth. Your presentation rings true, that it is a cross section, like most cities.
Slab City looks a nice place Bob I couldn't live there because I live in Birmingham uk, plus I'm 75 this year it looks a nice place to live, I am also a Christian a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, Bob thanks for sharing this video with me.
+Barry Chapman Is that an apricot standard poodle in your avatar? Is it yours? I ask because I have a 20 week old apricot standard poodle and he's adorable. Enjoy your summer in the U.K. fellow brother in Christ.
dagnyatl hello my friend, he is is an apricot miniature poodle his name was Marco, he was 12 weeks old when I bought him, he died in my arms at. 15 years old after a short illness, I have bought another from the same breeder, I have had my new poodle 8 years this year who I've also named Marco, I was just an eight year old little boy when I had my first dog a mixed breed and had dogs ever since, I have two dogs a miniature apricot poodle a who is 8 and a Staffordshire bull terrier cross, who was looking for a home as a rescue dog she is named Domino, if you would like to know a bit more about me, I can easily be found on Facebook (Barry Chapman) you will see my Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8 tdi truck (proud animal activist, Godbless you my friend, your brother in Chirst, I'm also an ham radio operator G4DIP
Sadly, I can't find any Barry Chapman on FB having a truck. My name is Cynthia Hoffman and I'm on FB with the same picture you see here. My YT name is "DagnyAtl." Kind regards & God bless, Cynthia
Chill people chill. It's just some information. Lots of people ask if there is anyplace in this country where you can live free. This is probably the one and only place. I appreciate Bob's nice video of the place. A view I might never see. Was interesting.
I'm really glad you did this video Bob, I watched one video from Slab City and its was pretty scary. So glad for this perspective on things I will go here like I had planned and see about some solar after the RTR in January.
I am sure I left a comment years ago and thank you Bob for an awesome report. Just to clear up a few of Bobs comments and footnotes. This place IS NOT as safe as any RV camp. If you leave your rig unattended everything inside will be stolen. If you confront the wrong person or do not donate cash your rig will be torched with gasoline. As for "No authorities" please. The sheriff is out there nightly for a multitude of drug related crimes. There are currently over 40 torched vehicles out there, filled with rotting trash. When it warms up the flies are not bearable. Rvers toss their poop bags everywhere and the ravens tear open the bags looking for french fries. The solar farm guy is trying to sell his real estate for 40K yet he does not own it. The property is owned by a school teachers union and the clean up from all the filth would be a hundred million dollars so the BLM will not take it back. Camp Dunlap was a Military camp, Not a Marine camp. Navy Seals trained in the All American canal, which is now fenced in because Slabbers on drugs were drowning. If you visit, travel armed or with friends. Enjoy the nice people and there are many, do not let the sun set while you are there and never let your vehicle leave your sight. Or pay the 90 dollar fee to visit the safe Hostel.
Slab City just got added to my Bucket List, thank you for this video (I'm watching in chronological order from current releases back through time, LOL, so I'm just seeing this :) ), really enjoyed the video!
Would be good to know distance to dump station/water/cell service (if there is no service in Slab City). I saw what appeared to be electric power poles. Is electric service available?
Great videos. I kind of lived the "In the Rut Life" you've mentioned. But I am retired now, from the military, from civilian jobs, and I am also disabled. I've passed so many camp grounds/sites during my life, just wondering how all it worked. Now you provide videos saying that you can just about camp without a whole lot of money, and have an enjoyable time. I am not in the position to just do camping for life thing many of you are, but I would love the opportunity to get out for several weeks now and then to see things before I become so old, I cannot. Your videos have shown me I don't need a lot of money to do this. Thanks so much for taking the time to tell all of us about the opportunities that are available. Regards CaleyAnn
Bob.. having watched many of your videos I can certainly concur you are doing Gods work whether you know it or not. Many people have forgotten that Jesus said: "I did not come to be served, but to serve and to give my life as a ransom for many." You are doing just that Bob. You are helping people look at their life through a different viewpoint. You have chosen a lifestyle where material possessions mean very little to you. That is also what Jesus taught. Bob, you may not know God, but he knows you and appreciates all you do to help others. Well done my good and faithful servant. If you look at your lifestyle, Jesus, John the Baptist, the Apostle Paul and Moses all spent much of their lives in the desert. A person would have to read the New Testament many times to be able to understand Jesus coming
I live not far from there. Was there visiting and a few guys were extremely mean and said I was on their property. I apologized and said I didn't know. They kept yelling at me to the point I finally told them they DONT own the property and that no individual owns property there. That is FACT. So, people like that and those with signs have no leg to stand on. I for one will not be intimidated by people who don't have a leg to stand on
It seems to me that the people staked out with fences all around aren't going to let anyone come in those gates; so it's not just pull over and park anywhere u want. With discretion
Funny, I was telling a co-worker about you and your work and he mentioned Slab City. I came home and this new video was here. How about TV and cell phone reception here?
It looks pretty well organised, though. Nomatic Fanatic seemed to be engaged in some sort of drama there, so the slashing of his tires were probably not a random event.
The people there are left alone by the authorities because the authorities would rather have a lot of them in the Slabs dealing with each other than on the city streets where normal people have to deal with them.
This is true. There have been many reports of registered sex offenders not being able to find housing. They must resort to unincorporated areas to set up camp. I don't doubt slab city has a (much) higher than average population of register sex offenders.
Felix Peelix I don't doubt that you are right. But, given the recent spate of exposed false accusers, the fact that so many women retract charges when faced with lie detector tests, and that many accusations are withdrawn even without that, I will withhold judgement regarding the people who actually end up on registers.
Thank you Bob for your tour of Slab City. I had heard others talk about that place and For the lack of onsight view, I had planned to include it in my next RTR-2020 trip... After seeing your Video, I think I will pass... I think it would be a waste of gasoline and of my time.. I did not see anything to interest me there. But that is my opinion. you saved me a trip... Thank you! To those who take great pleasure in slamming Bob Wells; As far as Bob's review... "IT IS HIS OPINION! Give him a break!" just because some do not agree with his Opinion is not to say HE IS WRONG! no more that to say YOU are wrong... He Clearly stated, it is not for everybody there are places to safety and places not! We should all be thanking Bob WElls for his tremendous efforts! ask yourself, are you willing to do all he has done for this lifestyle??? NO you are NOT! so get off your bandstand and leave Bob Wells Be!
it is hard to find places like slab city anymore few years back when our oldest child was yound we drove from new york to slab city for first time only thing we disliked about the place is the amount of garbage thrown around if everyone there piched in and helped clean place up it would be a very nice place to go i would love to go there again if i can find someone to ride with lol
If I ever visit Slab City for any period of time, I'd do it in a group...a caravan. I live in a converted U-Haul (vid on my channel), and you, Bob, were one of the early inspirations for me choosing the mobile life. Thank you for that, and for your bold statements about your personal, spiritual beliefs. I hope to meet you at the winter RTR in January.
As much as I love your videos, that place looks depressing free or not. As a single woman I don't think I would sit outside and enjoy the outdoors lol...but, having wrote this, agree with you on your spiritual comments. It's your video and you can say whatever you want to! Much love to ya brother!
Hi, Bob! I have been watching your TH-cam videos for the past week or so. I really appreciate, very much, how sincere and honest you come across. I am presently 70 years young and retired from the hotel business. I'm also an Air Force veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. I am an avid reader of non-fiction books, especially self-help books. I studied life coaching too. I can't help but think about all the homeless veterans throughout the U.S. Wouldn't Slap City be a perfect place for them all? They could probably save enough money to buy an old RV. I see the opportunity to create a real city in Slab City, except for becoming part of ANY political system or government authority. I just wanted to let you know that you are doing a very special and dedicated service to help people like me, who have just about had enough with the traditional way of thinking and living, and just want to be left alone, to live their last precious years on this earth, as they choose to do so, not like 'other' people want them to live. Please, please Bob, keep up (as best you can) these precious videos you keep providing us so that we can get better 'educated' in the fine art of FREEDOM!!!
Is there potable water available in Slab City? Do they have electric and if not is there gas available for generators? Bob you ought to have your windshield replaced before you get a ticket, don't you think?
Is there any Internet connection in the city? I assume it should be some sort of mobile. Can anybody confirm that? And also, what about quality - is it enough to listen audio or youtube 480 video?
see road is wet as u drive in? maybe from road water truck? Nice travel like video ,Bob . I use to think You and all other RV plp went North for summer. Man I am sweating and I am in Washington state of confusion...lol
I know it's been asked, but it's important to know, I think. It's obviously solar powered? But what about water and sewer? From the complex look of the place, I'm going to say that I doubt anyone wants to unhook and drove 30 miles to fill a tank and dump another. And yes what about cell service and Internet? I need Internet to work and my Mobley is AT&T, though I have a Verizon phone. I'm thinking it's a choice if I find myself needing somewhere to go, but I don't like people well enough to live in that mess if I could avoid it. But kudos to those who have built a socio-economic framework and make it a home!
The residents are not living on the streets and begging. I have respect for them. What they are doing is not easy.
Thanks Bob! Enjoyed the views. I have heard a great deal about Slab City and now I have some visuals to go with the commentary.
i DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY DON'T CLEAN UP THE PLACE.
Because it costs money to dispose of trash.
That's because the full timers out there are for the most part (not all) bums and junkies and society's rejects that don't give two shits about keeping something looking nice.
charlotte bassett One man's junk is another's treasure. I actually don't see an issue of cleanliness there but maybe I'm considered messy. :)
charlotte bassett because some people are inherently pigs. my sister had a very nice house wouldn't keep it clean and now all she has is a dump.
Thank you for your service, Marine.
And then end up in Hell any ways, that's real bright. What a waste
Sure he will *WINK*. If there is a hell, it's enduring religious nut jobs. Irrational people make life on earth a living hell for the rational.
Ronald Rowan - He wasn't assuming what walter thinks! walter SAID what he thinks, and John replied by saying what HE thinks. they should all arrange claenup days together. to keep the park beautiful! doesn't take long with everyone pitching in.
Because it costs money to do so I bet that's the hold up.
You can get the dumpsters and materials for a clean up donated and the BLM will help too.
We have volunteer cleanups at Dumont Dunes and Glamis and they work fine.
Imperial county will not allow dumping at the county dump from residents of Slab City because they are not considered residents of Imperial County.
The land is owned by the state of California therefore the BLM is not involved.
Thanks for the info, High Watch. I didn't think it was BLM land but did not know that for a fact. Nothing is ever as simple or as easy as it sounds. Especially when your relying on other people to accomplish something.
Cheers!
Thank you Bob for the excellent tour of Slab City! Safe travels!
I would love to go here! I heard about Salvation Mountain in a book called "Weird California". Very interesting! (P.S. as a Christian, I gotta say we ALL need salvation - but I'll be nice and leave it at that).
I agree with you 100%
I agree with Bobs assesment 100%
We are already saved. That was the point.
Thank you for the Slab City overview. I have watched a ton of videos from other TH-camrs but your's is one of the best.
I've said it before: if I had deep pockets I would love to go in and clean up the trash. Not the art or how people have set up their spaces but just the literal trash. Lori Smith if I had deep enough pockets, the slabs and the criminal scumbags that squat there would be used for live bombing practice by the usaf.
I really enjoy these "Living Rent-Free" videos! Thanks for sharing, Bob!
Thanks for watching Alex!
I was expecting to see Tina Turner and Mel Gibson pop up at any second in costume at the Thunderdome.
Link Chalon he won’t go there. His name may be Max, but he’s not mad.😂
Yep, LOL
It's looking much cleaner than the video I saw 3 years ago. I like it 💕
gotta love how he skirts the ARE YOU GONNA BE SAFE QUESTION!! No the answer is no you're not!!
100% safe in that place, not safe in that other place...too bad both places are only spitting distance away from each other. I wonder what he would do if he heard some gullible person went there on his recommendation and got into serious trouble with some crazies, got hurt or whatever....
Thanks for the video.Bob always has a positive outlook on things.
Bob, you are a legend in your own time. Hope things are going well for you over here in the southeast.

Thanks Bob, awesome tour of slab city!
Thanks Bob, that was a very nice tour. Ive never heard of Slab City.
great review of Slab City. I do want to see one of these days! Just to meet all the different people and listen to their stories! Thanks for sharing with us all!!
Street names and UPS... who knew? Thanks for this very informative tour of Slab City, Bob. It's one of the best I've seen on it.
you did the right thing there Bob, don't get out and keep the wheels turning
This is not my cuppa but I’m glad it exists for those who need it.
So where do you park without upsetting the natives? How much space do you give your neighbor before a territorial war breaks out?
If I was planning on parking close enough that I'd be concerned about a territorial war I'd ask first. Cheers!
I was wondering that, too! Thanks for formulating the question so well! Bob, can you please respond?
That's where you use common sense and maybe talk to the people around you get a feel for things
Definitely on my bucket list of places to avoid.
Thanks Bob! Slab City is definitely on my bucket list of places to see and experience! I loved the folk art areas.
Fascinating. A true nomadic encampment area. There needs to be places like this. These areas with trash need to be cleaned up. Maybe everyone could pitch in to clean up trash areas

Once I find my 4x4 camper van, I am going to give you the biggest hug I can find!
A lot of drug addicts and ex cons live there. And the place needs cleaned up.
I don't know about drug addicts but people avoiding police yes, but they are mostly the people who want no trouble!
@@TammyMartinBLUE yes its the police who are always searching for trouble
I think its truly American and I like their adaptability awsome.thank you for your insight.

Why would give this a thumbs down. He just showed u something different and in. Full details. Thanks bro
I will stick to BLM land and change locations every 14 days thank you very much!
,🤣! Oh affirmative! I'm not ever gonna be there but how cool!

Love you, Bob. You are 100% authentic.
Great video I took my family here last year and what a experience to see nice people we met
looks like you need a wind shied
Chill people chill. It's just some information. Lots of people ask if there is anyplace in this country where you can live free. This is probably the one and only place. I appreciate Bob's nice video of the place. A view I might never see. Was interesting.
I'm really glad you did this video Bob, I watched one video from Slab City and its was pretty scary. So glad for this perspective on things I will go here like I had planned and see about some solar after the RTR in January.
I would love to go there and check out out the art work, sometime! Very interesting place!!
Fix that windshield Bob.
Curious as to how is the sewage addressed?
Would be good to know distance to dump station/water/cell service (if there is no service in Slab City). I saw what appeared to be electric power poles. Is electric service available?
No electricity, no water, no sewer, no trash pickup....that's why it's FREE!
To each their own but it looks like an L.A. barrio. Wouldn't be for me.
Bob.. having watched many of your videos I can certainly concur you are doing Gods work whether you know it or not.
Thanks for sharing Bob. I've heard about it but never been there.
Can you do an update since homeless population has become alarming? Is it still safe in some areas?
I 2nd your comment. That'd be nice if Mr. Well's makes a current video.
I for one will not be intimidated by people who don't have a leg to stand on
John do u live in Niland? I have land out there I plan on living in the future...
It seems to me that the people staked out with fences all around aren't going to let anyone come in those gates; so it's not just pull over and park anywhere u want. With discretion
How is water distributed for folks living there? I assume it's been figured out long ago to make it easy, but I have no idea. Thanks.
Ha! It sounds like an outdoor Goodwill, if you buy it, you haul it.
Thanks for the tour Bob. That is the first time I have heard why it was named Slab City. Interesting about the 'neighborhoods'.
I like how you are always positive and enthusiastic, but oh my that place seems scary.
The aesthetics of the place are a downer but thank God there is a place like this.
that is pretty cool, thank you very much for the informational video.
Thank you so much for sharing with us 😊
Fascinating.
Thanks for making this video.
Very nice video of Slab City. Thanks.
Bob, that slab city was such a great video. I had questions about Slab City, but you answered them all. Keep up the good work Mark in TX
Funny, I was telling a co-worker about you and your work and he mentioned Slab City. I came home and this new video was here. How about TV and cell phone reception here?
I wonder how safe it is really. Nomatic Fanatic had to leave cause someone was slashing his tires.
It looks pretty well organised, though. Nomatic Fanatic seemed to be engaged in some sort of drama there, so the slashing of his tires were probably not a random event.
You go looking for trouble and your needs will be accommodated.
It looks like it never rains there. I'm guessing there are no water wells. Do you figure people haul in water?
Thank you Bob for your tour of Slab City. I had heard others talk about that place and For the lack of onsight view, I had planned to include it in my next RTR-2020 trip...
After seeing your Video, I think I will pass... I think it would be a waste of gasoline and of my time.. I did not see anything to interest me there. But that is my opinion. you saved me a trip... Thank you!
To those who take great pleasure in slamming Bob Wells;
As far as Bob's review...
Hoping to one day go there and stay a spell myself.
Thanks for taking the time to show us around.
it is hard to find places like slab city anymore few years back when our oldest child was yound we drove from new york to slab city for first time only thing we disliked about the place is the amount of garbage thrown around if everyone there piched in and helped clean place up it would be a very nice place to go i would love to go there again if i can find someone to ride with lol
*LOL* Thanks for the video. I wonder how permanent structures dump? Guess it's going into the water table somewhere?
Thank you, Sheri!
Jose Rivera THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE DEAR SIR!!! 👍👍👍💖💖💖
Interesting, got to go. Where does the trash & sewage go? Do they have a well for water?
Is it just me or does this place resemble the slums of Iraq?
If someone tries lighting my rig on fire they will learn fast what it feels like to die of lead poisoning.
"Post-apocalyptic" or when shtf comes to mind. Probably not for me but, if the resident is happy, who am I judge?
I don't know about Iraq but definitely a third world country inside the borders of America.
Thanks, Bob. Great explanation of Slab City.
Thanks Bob, for the tour of Slab city...amazing.
Is there potable water available in Slab City? Do they have electric and if not is there gas available for generators?
Bob you ought to have your windshield replaced before you get a ticket, don't you think?
Rick Bernst he did. This video was done awhile ago.
Thanks Bob! I have watched this a few times. I am planing on going out there soon.
Another great video Bob.
I don't think I'll be visiting Slab City anytime soon...
Why not? It looks interesting. Junky yes but also interesting.
@@outbackeddie I like Freddie Ray's post... What appeals to one, is not another's Cup of Tea!,I see NOTHING interesting there.
a) where do you get water?
b) where does the sewage go?
