I can’t get over how well researched and entertaining this breakdown is. Bravo Marc, you have outdone yourself. I used to sing The Beast In You backstage with her during ALNM; she was so pleased someone had remembered her old show. I can only imagine how happy she’d be with this video.

What a BEAST of a video! (Pun intended). Once again, you have knocked it out of the park. Let 'Em Eat Cake and the curse of musical sequels next?

I’m happy to see a new video! This was very interesting! Another show I had never heard of. Thanks! Looking forward to more. I’d enjoy another live chat like the last one you did sometime too. Not necessarily on Schmigadoon but anything theatre related. And just FYI, I got my t shirt and a couple stickers from your shop in the mail recently. Love them 💕

This one has a delightful score and, as you said, reads very funny. The title was probably off-putting, with people thinking it was more of a kids show, which is a shame. I'm not a big Elaine Stritch fan but she does a wonderful job with "I Never Know When", which I'm surprised hasn't shown up in many, if any, cabaret performances.

I was fortunate enough to see this when it played in Boston [before Don Ameche was substituted into the cast]. Unfortunately I've not been able to find any videos, but I have the recording [now on CD and in my digital library]. I have to say that it is still near the all time top of my favorite musicals. There were 2 moments which I remember as special - the first was when Stritch danced with the bear - very charming - and then talked with the aspiring actor in the bear costume. The other was Pat Stanleys delightful performance dancing and singing the Pussyfoot. Thanks to Gary Abbot for mentioning her appearance in Fiorello [which I saw, but didn't remember her] - I'll have to chase it down. Don't forget that George apparently consoled himself with Lois - they showed up for the shooting of Egypt together; she was wearing his Harvard sweatshirt [claiming it waas from Hoboken High]. Also saw Stritch in 'Sail Away' which was mediocre in spite of her performance. Thanks for the breakdown.

First - I would be so down for you to do “Bearded Broadway Drag”. The face you give when lip syncing is hilarious!
Second - I love your love for the arcane. Keep up the great work!

My granddaughter picked out a load of Numbers from this show as potential pre 1960 songs for her upcoming musical theatre singing exam. She couldn't find any videos of the show though. This has been invaluable for her programme notes. She's plumped for 'The Beast in you'.

Another wonderful video. Thank you so much.
Two things (you know there’s always two things from me 😜).
Trivia: despite many, many attempts, there has never been a successful musical about silent movies.
Fact: Leroy Anderson did write a previous Broadway musical score. He wrote it. No one heard it. He and Arnold Horwitt wrote the score for Wonderful Town. Unfortunately, leading lady Roz Russell hated the score and insisted she couldn’t sing it. Exit Anderson and Horwitt, enter Bernstein, Comden and Green. No one, including Mrs. Anderson seems to know what happened to the score. (I notice with this video that the song “The Beast in You” is patterned after “100 Easy Ways to Lose a Man”)

I always love your "two things" Bart! I would KILL to hear anything from his Wonderful Town score. And the curse of the silent film musicals is real! I worked on Chaplin and loved it. So it must be a curse, haha.

@@broadwaybyghostlight , and then there was the earlier Antony Newley Chaplin, the London Biograph Girl (about Mary Pickford), the Carol Channing flop The Vamp and the great heartbreaker Mack and Mabel.

Interestingly, there have been Hollywood musicals about the silent film era that have been successes. Off the top of my head, "The Perils Of Pauline" with Betty Hutton and Victor Mature, and "Hollywood Cavalcade" with Alice Faye and Don Ameche. "Singin' In The Rain" is also partly about the silent film era, although it focuses mainly on the transition to sound.

I remember the day in '59 (I was in high school) that I bought the OBC to Goldilocks. I went into a music store in Brunswick, Maine. They had a booth where you could listen to records before buying. I played the overture to Goldilocks and snapped up the album. I have collected all my life. I have some very obscure shows. Have you ever heard Ballad for a Firing Squad? Do you know The Nervous Set?

I can't help but wonder if Elaine Stritch was miscast in the lead. Seems the show would have benefitted from a more "romantic" type leading lady rather than the bold and brassy type. I wonder what an actress more the Doris Day type would have done with the role. Just a thought.

The breakdowns are extremely interesting but like all creative endeavors (fashion, literature, filmmaking etc.) they would benefit from some judicial editing. It seems you are more enamored of the clips than the subject. But what do I know…not much.

Yes, sorry you don’t enjoy the clips. I will say I use them more sparingly now if you wanted to check out a newer video. But yeah, I still use them so no worries if we just have different styles. 😁

I respectfully disagree with this. This was one of my favorite channels that I’ve discovered recently. Having now seen every video Marc has done, I would say that all the clips and edits are part of why I like it so much to keep watching. I find them really funny and it keeps my interest. I am only speaking for myself personally, but I do think that some of the other subscribers would feel the way I do.
