The plan was to bring in Sam Darnold as a bridge quarterback, then transition to JJ on a rookie contract that allows the rest of the team to be improved/rebuilt. As much as I am impressed with, and happy for, Darnold, keeping him would be massively expensive and derail the advantage of having JJ on the rookie contract.

the franchise tag or a 2-3 year deal makes the most sense. if Darnold keeps it up then his trade value is even better for us, if he doesn’t then JJM will be there to step in. Darnold has to know the Vikings are a much better situation than any team that would want to sign him. if he stays another year & keeps this up he could go from a team wanting to give him the Baker contract to teams willing to give him $40-50mil & better security long term.
plus JJM is incredibly young. him sitting for another year or two isn’t a bad thing. yes the rookie qb contract would be shorter. i’d rather have that with a QB hand picked & molded by KOC with plenty of time to learn everything he can without the possibility of being thrown in too early & stunting his development. in the end i trust KOC & what he thinks is best for long term

So maybe the Vikes keep Darnold for another year to let McCarthy mature even more and give a good starter and then eventually backup to McCarthy...and then hopefully McCarthy turns into a "Mahomes". Otherwise the Vikes should tag and trade Darnold. It is not mean. It is by the rules and gives the Vikes some compensation for the time and training they put into Darnold. Darnold still comes out a winner cuz it was proven that he is a good QB in the right system.

At worst we're paying for a quality starting QB with a hotshot rookie waiting in case Sam goes down to injury. KOC should have a decent idea by what he saw in camp what he has in JJ. If he's confident in what he saw, move onto JJ next year. Darnold is pretty good, but likely not elite. There's been times when he's been seeing ghosts out there, he's been coached up by KOC and has elite talent around him. If you sign hm long term, good chance you're back in a similar situation that you were with Cousins with a QB taking up a lot of cap space. If KOC is unsure about JJ at this point, franchise Darnold and roll for one more year. KAM should have been smart enough as finance guy to at least use the leverage they had to get a $15-20 million option for a second year from Sam. Sam wanted to be here and would have easily agreed to that. That would have allowed us to trade him without having to franchise him. KAM's biggest weakness is that he is in love with players from high-profile programs. His first year, all he needed to do was draft Tyler Linderbaum. If he had done that, our line would be solid up the middle and the offense would be the best in the league.

I don’t know how anyone can predict that JJ is going to be a great QB without taking an NFL snap. I believe that durability is the best ability. JJ has already had surgery at 21 years old. Darnold wasn’t given the starting job, he earned it, and was going to start this season over JJ even if he didn’t get injured. Darnold is 27 years old, and has had an incredible season (so far). Sure our offensive talent is a big part of his success, but he’s proven he can do the job. JJ has great potential, but still has no body of NFL work. I’d never let Darnold walk, and sign him for a two year deal in the neighborhood of 60 million. Let JJ sit, he missed his entire rookie season. On a separate note, Jefferson will have a big say in who he wants throwing him the ball, and it seems like he’s gotten comfortable with Darnold. Keep both on the roster, but if opportunity knocks, and heavy draft capital is offered for JJ, I’d give it consideration, especially since we have none for the 2025 draft.
