When the water gets in to the hydraulic system, it dissolves the glue holding the friction material to the disks. The transmission clutch plates will also come apart. The water gets in thru the vent. There is a bulletin to extend the vent higher.

Did the lube get water in it? My 6400 lost the PTO clutch lining and the brakes. The vent line behind the fill/dipstick tube cracked and cleanliness with a pressure washer and a few heavy rains did me in.

The lube must have had water in it at some point, none when I got it. Good to know about the vent line. As for the actual brake disk failure, its hard to know for certain. I've heard that the cheap hyd oil can cause those disks to delaminate. Otherwise they could have overheated to failure, which would be hard to do. Most likely the failure had something to do with the water. Its still puzzling to me how that water would have got down into that piston, other than gross negligence on someones part.

@@wilddundee5033 I have heard that about non JD hydraulic oil but I know many farmers (hay raisers) that use TSC or other farm store brands with no issues. All the brake and clutch delamination I have seen was accompanied by finding milky oil or rust up in the high parts of case not touched by the oil. I have seen coolers in radiators on trucks leak and the auto trans would suffer the same friction material shedding off the steel.
