This is a great tutorial. I am 70 years young this year, have no musical talent but decided to challenge myself so I really needed help... thank you for giving me hope. Everything is explained so clearly.
With absolutely zero experience of any instrument I started with this series of videos in 2013 and learnt enough to join a local beginners uke group. Now I run 2 uke groups myself and we visit care homes to play and sing for the entertainment of the elderly residents and do charity performances at Christmas and Easter. Now I can play the ukulele well enough not to be an embarrassment I'm learning the mandolin too. So thank you Chili Monster, you've encouraged me to do something I never thought possible for me and for anyone wanting to start out with the ukulele I don't think they could do better than to start right here.
After lots of wasted time, I've finally found a Ukulele tutorial that I can understand (the basics) and progress with. You've given me a bit of hope! Thank you.
I started learning to play the ukulele recently as a retirement hobby. .. finding people on the internet who give free lessons has been brilliant.I have looked at a few people and they are good...But, I keep coming back to chilli monster. This guy can teach. Many thanks to him . And his work for these videos. Chilli Monster you are excellent!
Thank you soo much. This tutorial actually worked! It seems everyone else that I have seen on youtube so far, gives tutorials for people who have played guitar before. Always saying things like "this is reeaaaly easy" when it's not. You uked my world. :)
72 years old. Bought my first ukulele five days ago, took one is store group lesson and have been floundering around on the internet looking for you ever since. Finally found you and now feel like there is hope for me. Not looking to make a living doing this, just have some fun. thanks so much.
I tried many instruments over many years and they all came to a frustrating - and sometimes expensive - end. Then I was home on a rainy Sunday and found this CM video and there in front of me was the very thing I needed. Easy to follow, logical instruction that was right up my street. I then learned (or was taught) 'These Boots are Made for Walking' courtesy Chili Monster and was happy as whoever Larry is but insufferable up and down the house playing it constantly and in different styles (I liked the Bob Dylan one I thought up) and it set me off. I soon had the confidence to join a Uke combo and took off from there. I've got plenty of my own Uke videos on TH-cam now but without Chili Monster, I think I'd still be drifting around looking for the next 'invaluable' instruction so I'd like to say a big thank you to this method and style of teaching. It was perfect for me.
This is the first time I've felt I can really learn to play an instrument. I bought a pretty tenor ukulele two days ago and thanks to your video, learning to use it is so much fun! Thank you!!!
My ukulele should arrive on Wednesday, I have never played before but have just started watching your very informative videos. Looking forward to trying it out.
You are the best teacher ever. Your kind tone, balanced approach, I loved everything about the video. U zoomed and showed how the fingers fit on the frets. All of this is very hard work. And you are kind enough to keep it free. Thank you so much.
I've poked around alot of other uploads of tutorials in TH-cam, and you are by far the absolute BEST in how you present your instruction. Many thanks and I look forward to viewing all your other lessons.
I actually get how all of this works now, thank you for all of this for free. This is the one of the only TH-cam videos that clearly explains everything
I'm so glad I found you. Absolutely what I needed. I'm 84 and just joined a u3a ukelele group but they are too busy practicing for gigs to show me so this is brilliant!
I was given a ukulele when I was 2 while living in Hawaii. My parents were friends with Clayton Naluai, a member of the local, Oahu based, 4 man group, The Surfers. I'm 58 yrs old now and have packed this old uke around with me for 30+ moves. Different cities, a few countries, raised a family etc, but somehow managed to hang on to it. I remember Clayton teaching me chords and my mom could play very well but I never put forth any real effort into it. Recently I decided to re string it and give it some proper attention. What a joy it is!! Thank you for your channel. I'm only one video in and already a subscriber!! Looking forward to watching all of them! Thanks, Leah (Edited to spell Naluai correctly)
@@287monty1 Wow! You noticed me! Lol thanks🤗 Question...Beings it so old (kinda like me) is there something I should be doing to preserve it? Oil? Dryness? Moisture? Thank you so much for all the work that you've put into these. I'm just learning the uke myself and you've made this soooooo much easier for me. I was able to play my first song in less than 5 minutes because of your easy lesson!!!
Greetings from Asia! Thanks! Really appreciate you taking the time to put up these videos tutorials. Nicely explained, kept simple and easy for anyone to follow.
Hi my name is Juliette and i am from holland. I was looking for some instructions how to use the ukelele. I am glad i found your channel. I bought a ukelele on mothersday and it arrived the next day. I hope with your instructions i will slowly be able to play some easy songs. Thank you very much. Lots of kisses from a new member of the ukelele family.
Hi Chili Monster...just got my ukulele today and I'm very excited about learning to play. I followed along with your video and it looks as if I may just be able to learn the Ukulele after all. It will take some time due to the fact I've never learn to play an instrument before but looking forward to it. My husband however is an awesome pianist and plays the guitar as well. I'm a singer and this will help me...for I have found that just hearing a tune brings words for the beginning of a new song. Thank you for sharing your gift with those of us who are just learning and want to succeed in this endeavor. God Bless!
Really helpful. As a complete novice I found your tuition very helpful, I need lots of practice but I find you explain and demonstrate it really well. I'll keep preservering. Think I'll buy a plectrum though as my finger is sore! Many thanks from the UK
I just bought a soprano, alto, and baritone and a round top mandolin. I believe I have a lot of work to do! You have helped me immensely! I played a uke as a child and well....I have forgotten more than I care to admit. You Rock Sir. TU so very much!!!! Very nice!!!!!!!!
This is a great video! It's tough to find one that really suits a beginner (I've owned a ukulele for less than 24 hours). I love the simple song you teach too and it would be easier for me to follow if you showed the entire strum pattern, instead of bit by bit as I found that hard to follow. Or even if the down and ups were highlighted as they were played, like lyrics at karaoke! Also, it would be very helpful to include the strum pattern on screen the last time you play the song through so I could play along in time with you. Thanks for making this awesome video.
I'm just starting with the ukulele and since I've never played an instrument before these 'entry level' tutorials are exactly what I was hoping to find. Many thanks, CM, for all your time and effort putting them together
An excellent Ukulele primer, and with a song lesson to boot. Nice to see that there are people who take their time for a new user, and not showing off intimidating the new user. I play guitar and am looking into one, and I am glad I stopped here.....Job well done, you get a thumbs up, cheers!
Thanks Norah - the best way to work out a strum pattern is to play along with the song (keeping your strings muted if its in a different key) and let your natural strumming rhythm find the best pattern for you ;)

Actually this is Sue Roy's wife.LOL I'm logged in on his computer. Yes I absolutely love how you teach! I look forward to all the lessons and more new lessons!
You state that baritone and tenor ukuleles are tuned differently to sopranos and concerts. I've just bought a tenor, and was told it was tuned the same as sopranos and concerts. I have tuned to standard G, C, E, A tuning, and it sounds fine. Am I doing it right?
+BadgerBotherer1 To keep things simple I just wanted to concentrate on the one tuning but of course you can tune to any tuning that suits you, usually depending on the strings that are fitted. Yes GCEA is fine for the tenor also ADF#B and even DGBE can be used too - I have used tenors tuned to all 3 ... hope that helps - happy strumming!
Thanks. I think I'll leave it at GCEA for now. I bought the tenor because the soprano I bought as a first uke was a bit small for my largish fingers. Will now have a look at some of your lessons!

Great video, thank you..just got my first Uke for Christmas and played my first song..thanks to you!BIG SMILE!...love how you break playing down into very easy to learn pieces..I am so jazzed!!
Thanks Chili Monster. I was in Hawaii a couple weeks ago and on a whim took a live lesson. Lots of fun but a one hour lesson does not a musician make. Picked up a ukulele when I got home (didn't want to figure out how to keep it safe on the plane.) I've seen plenty of tutorials over the past 2 weeks and a reasonable number of beginner tutorials but I gotta say yours was the most comfortable for me. Lots of good here for a noob.
Thank you for the video. This is so easy to understand for the beginner like me. You are speaking very clear , diagrams are so clear. I am glad I found this.
I have just started learning. This is exactly what I have been looking for. I love that you can see the hand position and that you go slow and repeat. Thank you so much.
"So, if you've just bought, found, or been given a ukulele ..." What if the ukulele has been stolen? Is this video not for those ukulele thieves... or ukulele bandits, if you will?
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to learn ukulele try Nadazma Ultra Uke Helper (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.
There is no rule on the best way to strum... There are different ways. Another way is to reverse what he said by using the pointer finger to strum down then the thumb to strum up, always with the nails. I also found it best to strum once down and pause until i form the chord. Then when I learnt to form the chords faster I could practice strumming the pattern he mentioned. As he mentioned there are different strumming patterns, and if you found it a bit difficult just do a search to find more.
I've been wanting a ukulele for almost a year now and i finally got one! This video has helped me so much i really appreciate it. You're a great teacher and i like that intro song!
Well you left a big hole! You could have come to Malaga and seen the real Spain, Next time I have a house in Granada you can use! I am struggling! Ukulelecarzy right now :-( Safe journey back!
i am struggling but not giving up on playing. i really liked your lesson as it explained and demonstrated more of the basics than other tutorials. thank you
Thank you sir, my 8yr old was kinda doubting that he would never learn the ukulele but with his first lesson from you he has changed his mind and is determind to learn now..thanks.
this is just fabulous - so easy to follow. If he lived around the corner I would sign up for lessons. This has given me hope that a classical pianist can make the leap to a whole new instrument and not feel like an idiot. Thank you so much!

Thanks for such a great video! If only I found this before the 100 videos I've already seen. You also give a few good tips on the strings and tuning which I found very useful!
Very well done. Thank you. I have had a Ukulele for 2 years and NEVER tried it. Today, you have helped me to play 3 chords. I'm 61 and excited about learning something new. You were very informative. : )
Just got a Uke for Christmas and definitely learned way more than other videos out there! Thanks! I'm super excited to learn to chords without looking!
What a fantastic first introduction to the ukelele! Thankyou so much for this lesson, you teach in a way which makes me feel I can DO IT!! Learnt more here than I ever have, and you have definitely de-mystified the ukelele for me. Thanks again.
Thank you! I finally found a tutorial that says it's easy and it actually is. In less than 10 minutes I was able to play this tune without any problems. I will certainly will follow your lessons. You got me as a subscriber!
i seem to fit perfectly into your subscription, i just inherited/found a nice little uke at my late grandmas house and now can keep up my strumming business (i was a bass player years ago, but somehow stopped), thanks a lot for the reintroduction!
I've just received a ukulele as my birthday present and I was looking for tutorials on TH-cam but all that popped up on top results were tutorials on specific songs. I needed a lesson 1 for total beginners. Fortunately, i found your video and you are such a brilliant teacher! I love how you are extremely detailed, thorough, you speak very clearly and teach slowly. You're the best!! ❤️ Thank you very much for producing these videos! Merry Christmas 🎄
You're the best teacher I've seen on TH-cam. Haven't decided on a machine yet since there are so many beautiful instruments available but my purse is very limited. I love blues music and dream of playing a steel slide uke. Maybe, someday. The beginner lessons must be very tedious for an accomplished player as I imagine you to be. I look forward to seeing more of your instructions as I contemplate which instrument to purchase. Thank you.
I just bought a tiny Ukulele for my Grand daughter. I need to learn to play it so I can teach her. You make this so easy to understand whereas, often people forget what its's like to be an absolute beginner. I am having problems with it staying in tune, although I was assured that it wasn't a toy. Perhaps I should change it for a Uke with geared tuners. Thank you for the super lesson. Will be back for more. xx
Thank you so much! I got a ukulele for Christmas today, cause I’ve been begging for one. After hours of useless videos I found this one! I finally know how to play something! Thank you so much!
Thank you master! This is the most helpful lecture I've ever seen on TH-cam. Finally i can strum and my ukulele can sing little harpish rithm. Heaven!!

I've seen plenty of tutorials over the past 2 weeks and a reasonable number of beginner tutorials but I gotta say yours was the most comfortable for me. Lots of good here for a noob.
Thanks Mark - good luck with your uke and happy strumming!
Thank you so much! You made my day after learning that Lil tune! 😙
Thanks Dulce Cora - happy strumming!

"So, if you've just bought, found, or been given a ukulele ..."
What if the ukulele has been stolen? Is this video not for those ukulele thieves... or ukulele bandits, if you will?
;)

Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to learn ukulele try Nadazma Ultra Uke Helper (just google it ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.
If you want to learn how to play the ukulele like a pro then go here now: HootPlay.info
🤣🤣🤣I just stole one hahaha
anyone else find it hard to strum up with their first finger?
Me
Yea
yes pls help
I did but you just practice and you'll be fine!
Thank you. I just got my ukulele and came here. You are excellent teacher. I will learn ukulele with your lessons. :) Thank you so much.
thanks m8 - happy strumming!
To make it even more easier to follow its like this:

Thank you! I finally found a tutorial that says it's easy and it actually is. In less than 10 minutes I was able to play this tune without any problems. I will certainly will follow your lessons. You got me as a subscriber!
marjs29 Thanks m8 - happy strumming!
i seem to fit perfectly into your subscription, i just inherited/found a nice little uke at my late grandmas house and now can keep up my strumming business (i was a bass player years ago, but somehow stopped), thanks a lot for the reintroduction!
Anne Jerratsch you're welcome happy strumming!
Wow, your instructions are easy to understand and clear, I have asked for a uke for my birthday tomorrow and you have really inspired me to learn!
+Kei Hildelitha And a Merry Christmas to you Kei and good luck with your ukulele - happy strumming!
Thank you.
Ur very welcome, good luck and - happy strumming!
Will be back for more. xx
+marilyn woodrow Thanks marilyn - happy strumming!

A,D,F#,B is the usual tuning for tenor/baritone ukes - sometimes used for Concert size too, though usually concert and soprano are tuned GCEA
Christmas brought me a ukulele and I'm so excited to learn with you. Already awaiting the strings you suggested and once my tuner arrives its full speed ahead!
Jenny H good luck Jenny!
