S1 - Ep 223 - Leliefontein and Tweerivier - Two Settlements in the Kamiesberg Mountains!

  • When we left Garies, we took an absolutely fantastic gravel road off the N7. The solid massive rocks which were literally the size of mountains were something to behold. The village of Tweerivier was not part of our plan but when we saw it, there was just no way we could just pass by. For us who live in big cities or even bigger towns where everything we need and want is just around the corner, this was eye-opening. Then we were off to Leliefontein. The drive through the Kamiesberg Mountains was superb. The church which has been in existence since 1816 was epic. So much history in this place. It was worthwhile visiting these two settlements! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #leliefontein #tweerivier #kamiesberg #garies #northerncape

    I appreciate the hard work that goes into this channel. I know it takes hours to put together these videos with all the editing, nevermind the work that goes into researching these towns and driving there. We get this all for free and visit places we'd never see otherwise. I think in return the least we can do is push the like and subscribe buttons which is very little effort. This will positively effect the algorithms to help the channel grow. C'mon let's push subscriptions up to 10,000 just by pressing your pinkie down on the like and subscribe buttons.

    Goats are cute, but oh hell, they eat everything, even the washing off the line! Love the sprinkaan that flew past Yes, we are so spoiled arent we. A place like Twee Rivier is an eye opener. Never mind shops and medical facilities, each house had its own outdoor k##huis! Humble but so clean and ordentlik. I am blown away. What a beautiful road. And the church is magnificent. So interesting to get the Anglo Boer War history.

      I'm glad you enjoyed this episode and the colourful somersaulting grasshopper! 🦗 We are indeed super spoilt and one only fully realises it when one visits places like these. The goats and donkeys were special sightings along the way and the landscape stark, but incredibly beautiful. The church had us speechless, it was a sacred moment to enter that building which has stood there for over 200 years! Thanks for coming with us! 😁🚗

    Wow thanks for the walk down memory lane. I grew up in Lieliefontein my late father was a Methodist minister there from 1966 to 1971 he built the school at Twee Rivier and was very loved by many people of the area. We lived in the manse next to the church. When I lived there the houses were mainly Matjies huts. I still have contact with many of the locals but seeing the church and place of a wonderful free childhood brought back some sad and yet wonderful memories. Thank you !

      How fantastic to hear from you who have such a close association with Leliefontein and Tweerivier! Thank you for sharing those bittersweet memories and all the info with us. We were there just a few short weeks ago for our first visit and our memories of these two villages are still vivid. Both of them had a huge impact on us as people and we so respect those who are able to make a living in that remote and harsh environment. We were very impressed and surprised that Tweerivier, for such a tiny village, had a school and to hear that your late dad built the school, is super special! The church in Leliefontein blew us away! We couldn't believe that it was still in such good condition and it was quite a sacred moment to be able to enter and have a look around. We appreciate you watching our video and your comment. 😊💒

    Just loved the tortoise, goats and the Donkeys so beauriful. These two places show that even though its a challenge one can make it work. Houses not on top of each other and that comunity garden so beautifu. Another thing I loved was that winding road in the distance through the mountain. Wow lovely. Thank you so much, we're very happy to hear that you enjoy our videos. 🤩 In this specific video we included a bit of everything you mention, as we do in most of our videos. We're in- the-moment travellers though and we don't want to get bogged down by too much research and serious stuff and, for us to continue enjoying our travels, we have to focus on the lighter side of things for the most part. My darling wife is not interested to appear on camera nor in doing the filming. So, until she relents, my ugly mug will have to do. 😁 I do most of the filming out of the window as we drive. Thank you for an insight to these two towns in the Kammiesberge. Well I'm not sure if you just missed it or at the time were not aware of the Wetland area just behind the Methodist church in Leliefontein. There is a spring forming part of Wetland with lilies all around the Wetland area. This was the origin of the name of the Town. Also I noticed you missed the Methodist church in OKIEP (not far away from the Catholic Church just down the same street). But all in all great info you're sharing with us here. Keep on showing us these remote rural towns. Thank you so much. God Bless.🙏🏾🙏🏾

    Still enjoying every bit of the videos. However,I wish people could petition the ministry of national monuments & museums,whatever the ministry is called,for rendering numerous heritage sites,cemetries,monuments etc etc,derelict! We can only preserve our history by maintaining these sites & i know the money is there BUT someone doesnt want to use it as allocated😭😭

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We echo your sentiments and have seen too much destruction of irreplacable and historical places and items. 😢🏛 There seems to be a fair bit of ambuity online as to who exactly is responsible for heritage sites, which would include national monuments. It looks like there is a distinction between provincial heritage sites which fall under provincial authorities and national heritage sites which are the responsibility of SAHRA or the South Afridan Heritage Resources Agency. It is probably exactly this unertaintly which leads to the sites not being taken care of and maintained as they should and deserve to be. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying our trip to various spots in Namaqualand. 👌🏻🚗
