@@AnferneeMyers well, the subject matter of the content creators I'm referencing is basically in depth video game design, sometimes about very mature and/or obscure games, and their videos are often more than 30 mins long. His content is made for people who would want to get into the industry. AND LET'S BE REAL. How many people in Max's community alone are willing to develop a videogame than play one? VERY few. There are more players than there are developers, there are more audiences than there are students. That's why video essays get more views.
man, Sakurai is an absolute icon, as much as we joke, his work ethic is incredible. I dont think we will ever have another Sakurai on this world, but his legacy will live on probably forever
Okay, like... Everything about this is incredible and mindblowing. But that he also got footage of both the Japanese versions of games and the English versions. Is my out loud, "W H A T ????????" moment
He'll work himself to the bone even after retirement. Give the man a garden, and he'll work on it 16+ hours a day, designing it and maintaining it in such a way that everything will grow perfectly. This man has no chill.
Bro... his total scripts length was about the same as Tactics Ogre!? But that's like 4 or 5 novels altogether if you consider all the different story paths. That's nuts.
The level of discipline that this man demonstrates is blinding. It truly puts into context everything about him. He wasn't just born a genius of game development. He forged himself into that man through years of dedicated effort- an effort that he continues to this day. What a fucking inspirational dood.
The low view count at least on the English channel can probably be attributed to the videos not being voiced in English. I know that would have sent the production costs soaring higher than it already was but at least anecdotally speaking it took too much focus to watch on my breaks from work, being able to just listen to them instead would have guaranteed a watch from me.
While I have no doubt other directors will try to share their knowledge for the same reasons as Sakurai, I don't just doubt - I *KNOW* no one will ever go to the same lengths he did with this project. It's just too much work and too much money. Even if it doesn't end up moving the industry's needle like he hopes, it's still... it's fucking historical. The entire channel is a piece of history for the medium.
Sakurai has spent almost his free time just for this channel. Thats fucking nuts. His work will not go unseen. Thank you for sharing your wisdom to the industry.

51:13 it's really just a youtube problem, his video rarely show up on my feed unless I go and scroll my subscribed channel page and if not daily upload youtube wouldn't really recommend his video.
I'll admit I'm a bit dissapointed in the lower viewership in the western version of Sakurai videos, because the western industry is the one that needs his expertise the most considering how western game development has declined in the last few years.
I never played Smash, never liked the game, but I miss the Mr sakurai presents and the smash reviews só much. Some of the best videos in the industry. Thank you for your legacy Mr. Sakurai
This will go down in history as one of the most important wells of knowledge in the history of gaming, seeing as Sakurai is ALREADY immortalized in the history books himself. This is such an unbelievable gift he has given us and future generations. I am not a game dev but now im compelled to watch the entire series. Wow just wow.
You’re right, the game that started development in April 2022 pretty much has to be Smash 6. With the Switch 2’s higher visual fidelity, game development will likely take longer (especially for Nintendo’s major franchises). So Smash 6 starting development in April 2022 would comfortably put it on track for a Holiday 2026 release. If they haven’t started already, then Smash may may not be until at least 2029. And with 3 major system-sellers (3D Zelda, 2D Mario, & Splatoon) off the table for the first two years, I’m not sure Nintendo would be ok with that. That said, I could see him being co-director with a successor he can train rather than just being an advisor like you mentioned. Otherwise Sakurai wouldn’t have made that design document himself.
The next Smash Bros cannot be the same game formula, but with less characters. So if we're taking bets on it, a continuation will have a drastic shift in gametype, like a FighterZ situation or something of that nature. It'll likely get re-branded as a sub-series and attempt to be the new flagship. You don't have Cloud and Snake, the roster is a bit smaller, but you DO get an interesting combat system that might be a bit flashier and more in-depth than you're used to. They basically have to make it different enough that people don't just get salty that Nintendo cut production on more DLC for Ultimate and instead started over on an arguably 'inferior' product. So my official prediction is that the future of Smash Bros won't be the same 2D platformer fighter we've grown used to, but instead it will take new directions with its next installment.
I could see it going 1 of 2 ways: Either take the same formula but use a completely different franchise (project X zone cones to mind, though stuff like shonen jump could also work), or change the gameplay entirely. Speaking of which, there hasn't been power stone style arena fighters in a while, which I've always considered to be smash bros but 3d...
Him and Iwata are the reasons back in high school i got into game development, i fell in love with everything game design when i listened to Iwata speak. Its more less feeling like a wizard but, i don't see money, i don't see trying to force your petty views on players, rather yet simply a fun game that hopefully you and I will love to play for the years to come, its a teary eyed passion every time Iwata and Sakurai speaks about game development, sort of like becoming teary eyed when you listen to an orchestra soundtrack. I miss Iwata truly one of the biggest impacts in gaming history. Honestly had it been for these 2 i wouldn't have picked up game development the same as i did and i hope my games can reach the stars in the same light, I'm an old school/new school gamer, i don't like charging for items that's in the game but as dlc, i don't like battle passes, i don't like unfinished early access games charging you $30, i simply want you play the game WHEN ITS FINISHED.

15:15 absolutely agree. I put off watching this for a bit because I knew id have to read the subtitles to fully get what was going on. While overall, the videos are great, they aren't designed to be watched casually if you dont understand Japanese.
That's probably why he's done these videos in the first place; as a video teaching tool for whomever he's teaching to review, and also give us a freebie in the process.
I think Sakurai's idea of subtitles is if he put the work into it, you do the same. Why spend for English translator and save you money and time when you should show the dedication to his work and either learn Japanese or read really fast. You can always rewind the video. Make the effort
50:28 what an insight. I know TH-cam is difficult but a ten minute video getting 100,000 views only equating to 150 to 200 bucks is just...man. I know TH-cam sucks but reminders like this always hit. Good thing you got Twitch donations.
since i started watching sakurai, i stopped watching video essay from game reviewers on youtube because i realized that most of them are just being honest, but also ignorant. most of review and analysis are nothing more than expansion of amazon reviews.
Ubisoft should pay his consultancy fee so Sakurai can save Prince Of Persia or something... He's one of the only people im convinced might be capable of saving that company.
Gotta have so much respect for this man. Putting in this much work, effort, and money to offer young developers and game designers a glimpse of the process and what goes into it.
man, Sakurai is an absolute icon, as much as we joke, his work ethic is incredible.
I dont think we will ever have another Sakurai on this world, but his legacy will live on probably forever
Okay, like... Everything about this is incredible and mindblowing.
But that he also got footage of both the Japanese versions of games and the English versions.
Is my out loud, "W H A T ????????" moment
He has done more than enough let the man chill he earned it.
It's not really a matter of earning vacations at this point. He just wants to keep going as long as possible - health be damned.
He'll work himself to the bone even after retirement. Give the man a garden, and he'll work on it 16+ hours a day, designing it and maintaining it in such a way that everything will grow perfectly. This man has no chill.
41:50 I’m sorry but I need this setup 😂 it would help my back so much honestly 😂😂
Bro... his total scripts length was about the same as Tactics Ogre!?
But that's like 4 or 5 novels altogether if you consider all the different story paths.
That's nuts.
Low key great on him to get real translation and not ai garbage. The dude is such a chad and you can tell he has a passion for quality in everything
I have heard that his TH-cam channel has been used in various Colleges and Universities.
This shit needs to be added to the Library of Congress, ffs.
It's a proper treasure trove of knowledge.
The level of discipline that this man demonstrates is blinding. It truly puts into context everything about him. He wasn't just born a genius of game development. He forged himself into that man through years of dedicated effort- an effort that he continues to this day. What a fucking inspirational dood.
This Episode was so beautiful i was crying at the end watched it live too 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I hope to see him again.
Im kinda weirdly sad he won't be making videos anymore even if they were just scheduled releases.
I'm not quite sure why, though
The next Smash Bros. needs to be revolutionary as opposed to evolutionary, he needs to make it a Power Stone-like
The low view count at least on the English channel can probably be attributed to the videos not being voiced in English. I know that would have sent the production costs soaring higher than it already was but at least anecdotally speaking it took too much focus to watch on my breaks from work, being able to just listen to them instead would have guaranteed a watch from me.
Not only did Sakurai capture most of the gameplay footage himself, but he did it multiple times per game to get both JP and EN versions!
The entire channel is a piece of history for the medium.
the man has achieved everything, at this point he's just ticking off his passion projects.
14:00 Damn max looking kinda crispy and crunchy for this spiel
Sakurai has spent almost his free time just for this channel. Thats fucking nuts. His work will not go unseen. Thank you for sharing your wisdom to the industry.
this man is quite literally built different
This is fascinating! What a wonderful legacy you have given to the gaming world! Thank you so very much for your far-reaching viewpoint and selflessness! Wishing you the best!
What an utter freak/genius/mad man/legend/hero/leader/inspiration/nightmare/god.
God Bless Sakurai
@@AEC.1 I originally saw the stream, that’s why. Almost everything Max uploads are edited versions of things he streams.
@@AEC.1 🤡
It’s going to be weird when he does eventually retires, he’s effectively creating his own signature in the giant shoes everyone is afraid to wear.
I'm happy this got highlighted, it's pretty informative on both sides.
You should search Google for "Super Smash Bros Ultimate Shine On! (SSBU2)". It's got everything in there you could ever ask for.
He is an absolute icon and I'm glad he did this insane project.
38:53 Sakurai has a strong vision and is good at what he does, but if you're working with him you will get lots of mail from him for small corrections 😅
15:15 absolutely agree. I put off watching this for a bit because I knew id have to read the subtitles to fully get what was going on. While overall, the videos are great, they aren't designed to be watched casually if you dont understand Japanese.
3:55 same for architecture firms. Usually there's multiple concurrent projects or immediate prep after another.
Sakurai: a brief intro on why I made these videos and how to make your own.
That's probably why he's done these videos in the first place; as a video teaching tool for whomever he's teaching to review, and also give us a freebie in the process.
Sakurai's the GOAT.
Nobody forced him to do these. He just did it. He made a plan, and he saw it through.
Mad respect for the guy.
Sakurai lives in a floating bubble near a pond in Kyoto. Sometimes, he’s been seen in the stands (at random)during low profile Sumo matches.
I think Sakurai's idea of subtitles is if he put the work into it, you do the same. Why spend for English translator and save you money and time when you should show the dedication to his work and either learn Japanese or read really fast. You can always rewind the video. Make the effort
This man is like Keanu Reeves he does not age at all ❤
50:28 what an insight. I know TH-cam is difficult but a ten minute video getting 100,000 views only equating to 150 to 200 bucks is just...man. I know TH-cam sucks but reminders like this always hit. Good thing you got Twitch donations.
Twitch is why he's streaming on TH-cam now. So no he doesn't have Twitch. You thought TH-cam was evil? Buddy, Twitch is 10x worse.
@@ZombifiedBuizel Yeah, Twitch sucks but the donations save it.
the legendary baby-face
since i started watching sakurai, i stopped watching video essay from game reviewers on youtube because i realized that most of them are just being honest, but also ignorant. most of review and analysis are nothing more than expansion of amazon reviews.
Ubisoft should pay his consultancy fee so Sakurai can save Prince Of Persia or something... He's one of the only people im convinced might be capable of saving that company.
A master. A legend.
32:12 Finally, Sakurai receives the 8-4 Bump. Now he can reach the big leagues.
The gigachad, Sakurai. I'm subbed on his channel and was surprised when the first time I found the channel. I hope he make more games.
Gotta have so much respect for this man. Putting in this much work, effort, and money to offer young developers and game designers a glimpse of the process and what goes into it. Hes made such a massive mark on the industry; even not being heavily into game development, I admire his passion and good intention immensely.
I went to an arcade today (just for a quick bathroom break), and while I didn’t play it, I saw an MvC1 cabinet there.
Calm down and listen to me, brother...The Sakurai we've been seeing is the Sakurai of two years ago.
47:11 Wait what? It cost him roughly $630k to do this entire channel?
