Future Silverback Gorilla Lope Prepares For Zoo Move 🦍

- Gorilla Lope has delighted visitors to Twycross Zoo for a decade
He has now matured growing big and strong in what seems like a flash
In this video he had just moved away from his family group into his own enclosure / Bachelor Pad to prepare for his planned move to another Zoo rumour to be in France
Since this video was recorded in late August 2023 he had been put in quarantine ready for the move and has not been allowed outdoors. Visitors had been informed via Twycross Zoo social media that weekend of 11th / 12th November 2023 would be the last opportunity to see him at Tw2ycross Zoo before he moves on to the next chapter of his life
He will be greatly missed by us and all staff and visitors of the Zoo but we wish him well and him a happy future with his new Gorilla family
The is a few particular charming parts during the video when he is troubled by a fly and tries to catch it on his head! and when he shows off his ever increasing strength lifting up one of the wooden poles on his climbing equipment- don't think it was built to be Lope proof!
Oh and the wonderful way he sniffs his food before he eats it!
At the end of the video the signage Twycross Zoo put up near his enclosure gives an explanation of Lopes departure from his family and the zoo
The keepers explained to us it was to avoid tension growing between himself and his father; dominant male Oumbi and his future had been planned out as part of the breeding programme from his birth
He is scheduled to be moved to another zoo as part of the European breeding program.

Twycross Zoo is the only Zoo in the UK where you can see The 4 Great Apes Chimpanzees, Gorillas, Bonobos and Orangutans

This is so bitter sweet seeing Lope, can't believe it's been a decade since he burst into my consciousness. Lope is deserving of a good life with a family of his own in the best place possible. Thanks AT for helping me complete Lope's circle, I have saved video's of Ozala holding and nursing him as a newborn and everything in between. Any videos you can take of Lope in the waning time he's available would be much appreciated!
It is sad to see him go and we have a little more footage to put up yet. Hopefully this wont be the completion for you as we are planning to eventually include European Zoos and hopefully get future footage of Lope. 🥰

Lope is the gorilla that was my first love,, he was a lot smaller back then and I never really paid any attention to the gorillas. But with him and just how funny he was running and playing I feel in love with him and will always be in my heart ♥️
When we first saw him it was only a few years ago and it is amazing just how much he has grown in the short space of time. Glad you have enjoyed our videos of him, have a great week. 🥰

Lope has been so entertaining over the years, especially his bipedal walking, and the interactions with his Dad. I think he looks just like his Dad, but that’s just my opinion. I’m glad he is moving on to his next chapter (some zoos keep gorilla offspring in their troop far too long: again, my opinion). I will miss seeing him, but I think his future will be very bright! Lope has grown into one handsome gorilla. I was just watching old clips of him a few weeks ago when he was annoying his grandmother. 😊Time flies. I see he has settled into his new home now, and I'll continue to wish him all the best. He's going to produce some amazing offspring one day.

Lope will be missed from Twycross 😢, but I’m so happy that he has the chance to be Silverback of his own troupe at another zoo. Looks like he is going to be a really big gorilla especially if he outgrows his dad, Oumbi is a big gorilla when we have compared him to Bukavu at Blackpool. Hope your week is going well Peter. 🥰
It's wild how different the personality of gorillas becomes as they age...from the goofiest silliest creatures to stoic protectors constantly surveillant of their environment. That said, it's also wild how much different gorillas personalities differ from one another. I just wish there was more available research on their behaviours, such as the lip pursing and facial expressions, specific head movements and especially the beating of things, like hitting things with the back of their wrist.

We haven't been able to find out the exact zoo, though we have been told that it will be somewhere in France. We are sure he will do great in his new home. 🥰
To: @imogen2092 - The zoo that has been mentioned is Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon, France.
It is not listed in a studbbok so this zoo may be attempting to establish a new troop. It is surmsed that he is joining a bachelor troop. One would think he is still too young to be father.

I feel so happy and sad for him all at the same time. He looks so lonely right now without his little brother to chase after and the rest of his family to annoy. I hope Lope is moved to an area where he can start his own family and have plenty of kids to chase after.

Makes perfect sense for Lope to move on. It’s time. He’s come a long way since the days of his funny/comical bi-peddling antics and harassment of his father, mother and grandmother as a youngster.

Hi father Oumbi was starting to see him as a threat to his dominance and it wouldn't end well. In the wild young male silverbacks leave their family and spend time alone before starting their own family. 🥰
