This is so interesting to listen to. I have been to Havana many times. My wife is Cuban and I am a lifelong Roxy/Eno/Manzanera/Mackay fan. I am 64 now.
These wonderful interviews should be donated to the British Museum or similar archive for posterity. They capture so many tiny and fascinating details that will otherwise be forgotten. It's amazing that it took a pandemic to create the situation where they could happen.
Fabulous episode! Just knowing there's even a flicker of hope for a Roxy 50th Anniversary Tour next year puts a smile on my face (not that they'd play anywhere near me, but ...) Phil has always been one of my favorite guitarists and this interview was an absolute delight.
What a wonderfully exciting life you have had Phil.I could listen to you all day ,like your music..The Finn Brothers/ Split Enz and Crowded House are my musical heroes too! Thanks again David and mark for my favourite podcast🙏
A friend sent me the link to this great interview which got us talking about 801's Listen Now - a classic and personal favorite album of mine. It never gets old, and the lyrics are contemporary to this time.
@@blairhelsing630 I got into them from the live album but there is a great studio version of Miss Shapiro (Eno’s B.Vox: “Shop Stewart The shocked shop Steward!”) on my CD copy of Manzanara’s best of that’s really cool! For some reason it’s listed as the live version
Roxy Music played In Every Dream Home A Heartache, Out Of The Blue, Love Is The Drug, More Than This, Avalon and Editions Of You at the Hall of Fame. Hopefully they will do something to celebrate the 50 years since first album.
Exceptional interview. I could listen to Phil for hours. Roxy, and the Velvets, have influenced more of my favourite bands that anyone else. Still no-one sounds like them, although Magazine came pretty close. Bring on the 50th anniversary tour!
So glad this bubbled up in my YT feed! I've always loved Phil's playing, and it's so wonderful to hear him talk about his life. What a fantastic interview. Thanks!
A lot of the first wave of punks were glam fans, particularly of Bowie and Roxy Music. The only other red Gibson Firebird VII I've seen belongs to Marco Pirroni (early punk and later on, Adam Ant's right-hand man) and he has it solely in tribute to Mr. Manzanera.
Forgot to mention, on the track 'Man called Marco' from Adam's 'Friend or Foe' LP, Mr. Pirroni says "Allo, I'm Marco, allow me to introduce.....my Firebird VII"
What a wonderful interview. So glad I ran across it. How'd we know at the time that we were growing up in the middle of the best music ever. 76 year old texan.
wonderful interview. This man has had such an amazing life! It leaves me gobsmacked! Plus he has so much humility and seems such a wonderful fellow! He is fantastic! I am glad he loved Split Enz! Very underrated band! I was lucky to see them a few times back in the late 70s.
Another brilliant episode of my favourite podcast..But surely that wasn't the "actual" plane Phil flew to Cuba on??...He must have been a VERY small child..
I am listening to my favorite Word in Your Ear episode around Phil's 73rd birthday Jan 31st 2024. I wanted to ask Mr Guitarissimo, Phil's got the BOAC StarCruiser, the bug-eye glasses, the Firebird guitar- did he have a copy of that gun he held from the revolutionary guard whilst in Cuba ?! Ha-Ha! I had listened to " Diamond Head," but in 1978, I really Latched onto the masterful K-SCOPE, with Bill MacCormack, and JW, and Tim Finn... "Remote control, Oh YEAH !" LOL! All the best, Phil! 46:43
Bravo Phil!...thoroughly enjoyed this! I am a longtime fan of Phil's from the States. First discovered him with '801 live' and 'Listen Now' albums, then backtracked to Roxy. All terrific!
Phil is easily the most overlooked British guitarist of the last fifty years. I don't ever recall his name in any polls for great guitarists in the 1970s. He is up there with the very best: "Remake/Remodel", "Do The Strand", "Amazonia" is a fabulous reminder of his talent. The withering solo on John Cale's "Gun" beggars belief nearly five decades later. 1975's "Diamond Head" remains an overlooked gem. He is a class act.
I've loved Roxy Music since the early 80s but didn't realise Phil was such an interesting guy. Thanks for this. I subbed to his channel too on the back of this. His enthusiasm is an absolute delight when so many of his contemporaries are grumpy old men.
The opening, jangling powerchords of "Prairie Rose" blew my everloving mind and was largely responsible for my addiction to electric guitar...thank you, thank you, THANK you, Mr. Manzanerrrrahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
Great chat. I had to watch this after seeing PM turn up on that fascinating Heroes del Silencio documentary and needed to hear the backstory. See you on Cissbury Ring.
I love 801 live, only a few concerts, one recording, a 19 year old drummer, the best bass player in the world, Eno and Phil singing Miss Shaperio in perfection. And I could go on and on. But here, he doesn't talk about. Don't get me wrong, this is hands down the best interview I've seen. Such a humble, transparent, interesting etc person. IDK I was hoping to hear something on 801. Roxy VIVA, 801 live, Seconds out -Genesis, my favorite albums.
Gobsmacked and completely honored to see Phil. Phil's distorto leads and non blues leads were exquisite. The non reverse head Firebird here! Sound Techniques Joe Boyd and John Woods studio by the way.
Phil, I just saw you playing the meanest guitar at the Roxy Austin concert last week. You are amazing. Good for you and good for your great work with David Gilmore.
Love Phil- I found out about Roxy after first listening to Phil's solo Diamond Head! My first Roxy show was at a Community college in the Philadelphia suburbs; It was April,1979, Manifesto tour. After the show, some wag got through the security, and made off with one of Phil's guitars ( NOT the firebird!). As he tried to get away from the security posse, he realized he wasn't going to get away. In a moment of insanity, he threw the guitar to avoid capture, and the guitar landed on a rock, breaking it. Later, it was revealed that guitar was a loner that Phil had borrowed from Graham Gouldman of 10CC ! ( article appeared in Rolling Stone, later that year!)
I think there was an interview with Paul McCartney, and they asked him, how does it feel it be the world's best songwriter? and his reply was "I don't know, ask Neil Finn"
Baby's on fire.....better throw her in the water......801 Live......always enjoyed Phil's playing on Roxy Music and on his own.....love his lead solo on Like a Hurricane......live Roxy Music show in Frejus France.....they were cooking that night..... I actually got to see them backstage at the Academy of Music in NYC when Brian Ferry was wearing a red leather suit on stage.....great evening of music ... Wonderful interview guys.....sorry I didn't see this earlier.....
Wonderful talk. A great many of us, I think, would probably pick that incredible 801 Live album as the greatest record ever made, if such hyperbole even makes any sense.
I did not know a thing about this guy, I am here because of the documentary he mentioned on Netflix about heroes del silencio. He looks like an amazing human being and he is like a legend in England. I totally enjoyed all this interview.
Phil Manzanera, must have one of the coolest names in modern music history.Besides his groundbreaking and tasty inventive axe histrionics with Roxy ,Look on the credits of his solo albums and collaborations. You can map out a who is who of the prime artists that Often changed and shaped the music as they went along. The classic Quiet Sun and Diamond Head records are of course a Main example of that.Very well conducted and excellent interview with personal takes which brought me great insight and context on how Mr Manzenera eventually became the exceptional and original musician he still is today.
Manzanera cuts the groove.. on the guitar.. and song writing.. and having the best around him on stage.. he and Andy mackay made roxy music tick… all the band did but when I seen roxy music in Glasgow think 71 or72… it was they two who stole my attention… andy and Phil were stylish musicians.. who could play.. I never seen a better wind playing instrumentalist than mackay in his heydays.. haunting melodies.. X-Ray spec also.. ohfftt.. blew you away them.. they were in your face x-ray speck.. seen them queen magaret uni…
Bowie name-checked Roxy Music on the Dinah Shore Show (aired March1976) after performing Stay. Seems he genuinely did hold the band in high esteem. "There's a kind of European wave happening"..."I've got a favourite band and song writer back in England called Roxy Music"..."a character by the name of Bryan Ferry"... "spearheading some of the best music coming out now." Later that year (Sept/Nov), Bowie was in France recording the 'Low' album with Brian Eno.
I can honestly say that "Diamond Head" is my number one desert isle disc. I've had it since it came out, and still listen to it at least 3 times annually. If its original multi-track tapes still exist, it would be wonderful if it could get a deluxe modern remastering some day, and issued on Blu-ray audio. (A guy can dream can't he?)
Phil is the man, coolest of the cool, a very fine human, and an excellent artist. 801 forever!
Surely the most underrated guitarist of his generation - and one of the best. So great to see this interview
I could not agree more.
This is so interesting to listen to. I have been to Havana many times. My wife is Cuban and I am a lifelong Roxy/Eno/Manzanera/Mackay fan. I am 64 now.
What a fantastic little gem this was! Phil Manzanera is such an interesting and personable man. You could listen to him for hours.
That was a terrific interview, Phil is a brilliant treasure-trove of great anecdotes, I could listen to him all day! See if you can get Brian Eno?
These wonderful interviews should be donated to the British Museum or similar archive for posterity. They capture so many tiny and fascinating details that will otherwise be forgotten. It's amazing that it took a pandemic to create the situation where they could happen.
One of the best interviews you have done, Phil was excellent. Can you try and get Brian Eno.
Fabulous episode! Just knowing there's even a flicker of hope for a Roxy 50th Anniversary Tour next year puts a smile on my face (not that they'd play anywhere near me, but ...) Phil has always been one of my favorite guitarists and this interview was an absolute delight.
That was just fantastic Phil is a gentleman & a great guitar player, writer & producer. Thank you Mr Manzanera.
What a great interview with a great guy and fantastic guitarist - but so normal and nice. Loved every moment of that! Fascinating!
Phil M. what a great creative musician! Diamond Head is one of my all time favorite albums....
Great interview!....I was at the Roxy/Enz gig in Sydney 1975....one of the best gigs I ever attended!!
Abulous interview and thanks for letting Phil tell his stories
What a wonderfully exciting life you have had Phil.I could listen to you all day ,like your music..The Finn Brothers/ Split Enz and Crowded House are my musical heroes too! Thanks again David and mark for my favourite podcast🙏
Phil Manzanera is so cool. This interview was a delight to listen to!
Mr. Manzanera is one of my favorite musicians. I love 801 as much as I love Roxy Music.
Ditto
Amen
👍

801 Live is my favourite official live album by anyone.
i never would have heard of 801 live if i hadn't worked at the record store - great record, tomorrow never knows off of revolver is a great cover
Good on you Phil......You’re a legend and obviously a thoroughly Good Bloke...Thanks
Phil's such a decent bloke. Also, anyone else unable to visualise Bryan Ferry driving a van to a gig?
It just seems so wrong.
Presumably playing Oh Yeah on the radio?
Great interview saw him with Roxy at the Point in Dublin 2000 with my late wife Mona happy times so long ago alas 💚🇮🇪
Roxy Music played In Every Dream Home A Heartache, Out Of The Blue, Love Is The Drug, More Than This, Avalon and Editions Of You at the Hall of Fame. Hopefully they will do something to celebrate the 50 years since first album.
"Diamond Head" was the pinnacle of my youth. No album more "suave" as this... "Frontera" is pure bliss, XTC, LSD, liquid gold, whatsoever.
Awesome interview. I could go on and on listening to Phil's stories. Thanks.
What a fantastic interview. Always loved Phil. Thanks for posting.
Great interview. I've followed Roxy for 49 years. Just seen them at Manchester AO arena on their 50th anniversary tour. It was breathtaking.
Lovely interview met him in 2007 at Bryan Ferry interview Micheal Bracewell got his autograph on Roxy Music book lovely mannerly man
Exceptional interview. I could listen to Phil for hours. Roxy, and the Velvets, have influenced more of my favourite bands that anyone else. Still no-one sounds like them, although Magazine came pretty close. Bring on the 50th anniversary tour!
Phil is a great guy and a super interview.
So glad this bubbled up in my YT feed! I've always loved Phil's playing, and it's so wonderful to hear him talk about his life. What a fantastic interview. Thanks!
Great interview. Phil doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Modest man, Great personality ,
Great guitarist !!

Excellent, not someone you get to see interviewed very often total legend Quiet Sun should be checked out great album.
Tim Finn is just great.Northern Hemisphere needs to know.
I have loved Roxy Music since "For Your Pleasure" was released at the beginning of 1973. I really liked this video.
Pure class, another fascinating interview chaps!
Thank you x
Phil's Cardinal Red Gibson Firebird VII is so beautiful!
wonderful interview.
We were blessed by great guitar players in our British bands of the 60’s & 70’s - Phil, Paul Kossoff and Zal Cleminson were some of my favourites.

Absolutely brilliant. So interesting.
Thank You very much for this finest episode.
What a lovely and engaging bloke is Phil! I really enjoyed this interview!

Phil's performance on Eno's "Third Uncle" in '74 rather wipes the floor with what Fripp did on Eno's debut earlier that year.
I think you may have right.
Such a gentleman ! Nice Job Phil
I've loved Roxy Music since the early 80s but didn't realise Phil was such an interesting guy. Thanks for this. I subbed to his channel too on the back of this. His enthusiasm is an absolute delight when so many of his contemporaries are grumpy old men.
What a coup great stuff and a nice bloke to boot
Just found this now, fantastic!❤ Thanks!
What a revelation -
thank you for this!
Phil is an absolute treasure!
Superb. Again
Love your show boys, missed seeing you on the box for years.
The opening, jangling powerchords of "Prairie Rose" blew my everloving mind and was largely responsible for my addiction to electric guitar...thank you, thank you, THANK you, Mr. Manzanerrrrahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
Phil's playing on If There Was Something is pure genius.
Great chat. I had to watch this after seeing PM turn up on that fascinating Heroes del Silencio documentary and needed to hear the backstory. See you on Cissbury Ring.
That was time well spent. Mr Manzanera looks like him and Malcolm McDowell could be brothers.
Great vlog, Phil is a brilliant guitarist and even more entertaining man. Really interesting to hear is back story. Overall fantastic.
This was a great one, guys. So much fun!

Priceless memories and a fantastic insight to one of my all time favourite groups

What a joy.
I also have a Phil Manzanera Epiphone Firebird 7 from 2000😁🇬🇧🎸
The best leftfield guitarist in the business
Marvellous!
Can we have more Phil Manzanera? His new stuff with Andy Mackay is really really good.
"Viva Roxy Music". The two solos in " If There Is Something "!! 801!!!
Its only my humble opinon but i still say roxy had the best run of brilliant singles than any other act.
Phil Manzanera, must have one of the coolest names in modern music history.Besides his groundbreaking and tasty inventive axe histrionics with Roxy ,Look on the credits of his solo albums and collaborations. The same Eno that was on the first Roxy album, when Mr Jones was still in a rock and roll band, pretending to be Hendrix ?
How the heck did Phil fit in that plane?
Gibson Firebird ftw
PM has lead a very interesting life indeed!!!
🕶🇧🇷
I remember being in Mallorca in 1968. Cuando Sali De Cuba was playing on the jukeboxes all the time.
I can honestly say that "Diamond Head" is my number one desert isle disc. I've had it since it came out, and still listen to it at least 3 times annually. house in Notting Hill "seemed to have electricity" !!
One of the Great British Rawk Guitarists.
I like PM's jazzy shirt. His clock has stopped, so he's frozen in time!
Who was the Fantastic Mr Wood?
Keep upping your game!😁
Great.
Bring him and Simon Phillips together again.
Still got "Mainstream" by Quiet Sun...
Oh yes, such great album.
So how long has this thing been going that he says they were " inducted " into in 2019, did you say ?
why do i fancy phil manzanera?
So the Ian Macdonald who died was an author and not Ian McDonald from King Crimson. That threw me when I heard it.
He wrote Revolution In The Head?
He worked at the NME.
The actual plane !? Where does he live now. The land of the giants? Joke aside. Roxy were the best. I was in their fan club 😂👍
