    This was a great show that deserved to have a much longer run than it did. A remake would be great.

      Agree personally, but i think it ended up being too depressing for the average popcorn viewer and they had to shut down for economic reasons.
      Few "likable" personalities starring. Just a lot of oddity and the world conspiring to get the main character and kill him. This was a very intense show.

      Potential spoilers in my comment if you are reading this but haven't seen the whole show
      They should do a "remake" change the name of the main character, have greenwood guest star as the psychologist have him pop up every now and again and in the final of season 1 have it revealed that greenwood's character is Thomas vaile from the original and its not actually a reboot (like the audience thinks) but a follow-up sequel series

    Good Evening; Being British, I, (and, I feel, many other 'Brits'), will find this strangely familiar!! Dear Americans, if you enjoyed this 'original' American series from the 1990s, perhaps you might also enjoy the British series from the 1960s, (starring an actor named Patrick MacGoohan .. apologies if mis-spelt..), called .. "THE PRISONER." I think that you'll begin to get my implied point as THAT series progresses ! .. Regards, Mr.Swann.

      Chris Swann Not a question. This is an effective take on “The Prisoner” which is the best British series ever. This American show puts it into a ‘90s context and was quite good but they cancelled it before they could properly wind it up. So disappointing. The Brits tend to do shorter series and plan conclusions. Bruce Greenwood was great in this. I am about to watch this first episode. Great lockdown viewing.

    • @Pooua
      @Pooua 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've watched several episodes of "The Prisoner." Although it has some of the same paranoid feeling in it, its story is completely different from this one. In "The Prisoner," the agent is confined to The Village, and his entire day is under the control and watchful eye of the Numbers. In this one, he isn't confined. Also, this story is even less plausible than the other.

    • @ckom9
      @ckom9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Pooua Agreed, but this show is still extremely cool, except for 1 or 2 episodes that are not watchable. It was just starting, and then it was cancelled. Bummer.

      I, an American, certainly do know who Patrick McGoohan was. He co-created “The Prisoner” series. He has two Emmys to his credit and a BAFTA TV Award.
      He was in “Ice Station Zebra” a Cold War era film with Rock Hudson. One of my favorite films of the era. A very talented and creative man!

      @@TheDesireFilms There is a 4 lane highway about 10 minutes from my house. The intent was to have it go through North Chicago, Illinois (home of the Great Lakes Navy Academy) then through Waukegan (home of Jack Benny), through Beach Park, then Zion (where I live), and then all the way up to Kenosha Wisconsin. They built the Waukegan part of the highway but Zion sued the state claiming all their businesses depended on people using Sheridan Road and the new 4 lane would bypass all those businesses. They won so now there just the 4 lanes in Waukegan that rarely gets use - so movie ant TV shows tend to borrow it for filming. I saw the remake of The Fugitive being filmed there. There is a current TV show, I think it's call Chicago Fire, that films there. It was used in the movies A Wedding, The Blues Brothers, Groundhog Day, Ocean's Twelve, Batman Begins to name a few. A description about Gotham said "A Hollywood film crew has come to their city to film a scene on 'The Amstutz', an unfinished 'road to nowhere'. "

      The theme of the show, the ultimate lesson, was revealed (no spoiler) in the final moments of the last episode:
      If you protect a lie long enough it becomes the truth.
      It was topical then and more so now -- in this age of social media #cancel culture and history being rewritten in real time, it is spooky how necessary the message of this series is.

    I missed this in the 90's ,and right now I really miss the IMDB forum. The forum would have had discussions and interpretations from many interested viewers that would have made this more satisfying for a first watch. I am always impressed by Bruce Greenwood's work; he is completely believable, even now when I am not even quite sure of what is happening (lol). Thank you for the up. Per what info is left to be found on the IMDB website, this pilot episode was directed by Tobe Hooper.

      In fact ALL shows were pitched at an 8th grade (14 year old) worldview and intelligence level - this is to satisfy the sponsors (it's supposed to support advertising according to the experts in marketing psychology) - now we do our politics in USA in this way. Media has moved on from TVF to advertise using other strategies as major channels, e.g. electronic.

      There use to be a TV series called Ellery Queen. It was a murder mystery show. It was very good but got cancelled and one of the reasons for the cancelation was that the mysteries were too difficult for the average Americans. BTW - the show was about a writer of murder novels who helped the police solve crimes. A few years after that, they came out with Murder She Wrote that, IMHO, was so stupid I couldn't bare to watch it. I described it to someone like this : A murder takes place in an apartment. A dozen police search it top to bottom and find nothing. Then Mrs. Fletcher walks in, immediately she spots an earring lying on the floor in plain sight. The camera zooms in on the earring and a sign appears with an arrow pointing to the earing and flashing the word "CLUE". Then a woman walks into the room, says "what a lovely room, I've never been in here before." Then touches her ear and says, "Opps, I lost an earring". Really, I think it was that bad.

    34:25 -- The nurse distributes the meds: "Time for your medication," then walks away.
    Meds are not distributed; they are administered. They give them to the patient, the patient (hopefully) takes them, they show the person administering the meds that they have taken them all. In some cases, the patient is required to open their mouth wide and move their tongue around to show they have not held the pills back in their mouth, but swallowed them.

    It's seems to be a great serie. It's just that there is no intro. So I do not know if it's about time travel, something like the twilight zone or something else. Who is the actor?

      I am a HUGE Pretender fan but my one quibble about the show is that it started out as Jarod sort of righting wrongs where he found them but veered heavily into a sort of soap opera. Then it did like many dramas did/do nowadays...it killed off characters that were beginning to get interesting only to " resurrect " them at a later date. And it was beginning to look like the writers didn't have a plan for the season, or even a complete story arc, but just the next episode or two.

    Wirklich scheisse, daß diese Serie nicht mindestens acht Staffeln hat!!! Dies ist so interessant. Dieser ganze Charmed- Zauberhafte Hexen, der öde blöde Senf hat auch acht Staffeln, genauso wie dieser Gilmore Girls Quatsch, mit diesen Schnatterweibern. Wo gar nichts interessantes passierte. Bei uns kam im Juni 1997 bis Januar 1998 Nowhere Man im Fernsehen. Und sowas schaute ich selbst als damalige 17 jährige Maid liebend gerne als diese ganze Charmed Scheisse.

    21:00 -- This setup could hardly be more unrealistic. He's in a straight jacket AND there is a 'guard' standing by. The lighting is dark and bizarre. The zigzag lines on the wall could make anyone go insane. The shrink lights up--and it's a stinky cigar no less--with his asking if it's OK merely an afterthought. The least conducive setting to help a disturbed individual open up.
    The shrink is as un-sympathetic as possible: aloof, superior, snarky. Everything he says and every mannerism he exhibits is the OPPOSITE of how a real shrink would act.
    "Let's paint psychiatry as a scary nightmare." Boooooo.

      Bud... this was the 90's and was very believable then. It was one of the first of it's kind during this period among movies like "the net"

    • @ssppeellll
      @ssppeellll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should have clarified that I was only referring to the design and behaviors of the psychiatric setting.
      I am plenty old enough to remember the 90's, and I maintain that this is a horrible representation of that kind of place and treatment at that time.
      I understand this is done for dramatic purposes, but it is so unrealistic as to detract--for me, at least--from the enjoyment of the story. Not to mention the disservice it does to a field that is already stigmatized.
      But you got me to re-read my original comment, and I corrected some typos. So thanks for that.

    • @jetuber
      @jetuber 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a deliberately expressionistic setting, reminiscent of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Film/TV doesn't always have to be naturalistic. Sometimes, exaggerated elements, like a distorted set, can externalize a character's mindset -- very effectively, I might add. And as for the psychiatrist, I'd say it was made quite clear that he was not proceeding with this patient as he would with any other patient; he's "in on it."

    • @laustcawz2089
      @laustcawz2089 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Private I--
      Read about
      "The Rosenhan Experiment"
      (history, not fiction)
      & see if you still feel the same way.
      The real opposite of how psychiatrists really are
      is the Judd Hirsch character
      in the 1980 film
      "Ordinary People".
      The Michael Tucker character here,
      on the other hand, Dr. Bellamy,
      acts very much
      like a real psychiatrist.
