You only went through the most expensive streets in Helsinki. Prices can be halved out that.
Looking at proper (read: hella expensive) restaurants along the most expensive streets of the biggest and the most expensive city of the country... Fair enough since he was on such a short visit, but still a tad dishonest.
And also the most expensive city in Finland. I mean it is cheaper in other cities. And if you are staying longer and want to use the bus, train etc. you can buy a day ticket that will be cheaper if you use the train, bus, subway, tram a lot.

Gabriel were most expensive part of Helsinki and if you dont have much money there are many places witch are cheaper in food and drinks. Cheapest bear is probably 3 euros.
Save lot money by thinking first, single can of beer cost average 1€ in markets.

Finland and Helsinki get significantly more reasonable if you live here (permanently). There are many things that are considerably cheaper than other 'cheaper' European countries that you won't encounter until you live here. For example, district heating and heated water, which are produced from the excess heat of power stations and 'piped' into apartment blocks. This is a lot cheaper and included in electric bills. Permanent residents also get cheaper travel cards (the train trip from the airport costs €4.20 for a local with a travel card - 80 mins unlimited travel in 3 city regions). If you live here, you also know where to go shopping and where to avoid (e.g. the difference between visiting the tourist-geared Old Market Hall near the Market Square and the local-geared Hakieniemi Market Hall). Lol, and not going to centrally-located expensive restaurants (in Helsinki terms), and places in the tourist Market Square when staying in hostels. Decent tourist guide books will tell you this! Oh, and there is free wifi EVERYWHERE, even the airport. Yes, many things are more expensive, but pay is proportionally higher, and the higher taxes are used very well compared to non-Nordic countries.
I 've been there last November and I can tell you I was very disappointed cause I couldnt get free Wi-Fi as was told in all places, such as central station, but a guy offering perfume and marijuana

@@Andrew-cg2zl There is zero tourist travel to and from Russia. That will continue until they leave Ukraine, likely longer.
I'm native finnish and I have never visited those restaurants showed in the video in Helsinki because they're so expensive. Finnish seldom visit those expensive restaurants, we know our way around Helsinki and where the good, a little bit cheaper places are. If you're visiting Helsinki, look for a restaurants that are not in Esplanadi or Aleksanterinkatu (restaurants in those streets are expensive). Or if you have courage to approach a local, ask recommendations for a good restaurant (if you're staying in a hostel, ask from the receptionist for example). Also, if you're in Helsinki in "Syö viikot" event, you're lucky: those big 10€ signs at restaurant windows or menus means that they have couple meal options that costs only 10€, even more expensive restaurant take part in that.
Good info. But it's always the case that the restaurants in the city center and by the sea are the more expensive ones. Those are also the ones that tourists are most likely to go to. As always if you want to find the cheaper places then you need to find the local areas of a city. Oftentimes those are out-of-the-way spots that you will need to walk a bit more to find and/or have some insider information about where they are. Maybe sometime when I go back I'll find the local places and make another video: "How to eat cheap in Helsinki, Finland". :)

@@GabrielTravelerVideos I'm guessing the cheapest meal you can get in the city center is from McDonald's. A small hamburger costs just 1 euro (including taxes and everything), and a meal with fries and a drink is 4,70 euros. Even the most expensive meal you can get there is currently just 9,95 €, including some special hamburger, large fries and large coke. In Finland "large" means 5 desiliters, or 17 oz, though.

"Helsingin" doesn't mean "Helsinki" in Finnish :) "Helsingin" is the genitive case of the word "Helsinki". So "Helsingin tuomiokirkko" means "Helsinki's Cathedral".
Okay, pretty close anyway.
And actually "tuomiokirkko" does not translate to "cathedral" even though its called Helsinkis cathedral in English. "Katedraali" whould be "cathedral". "Tuomiokirkko" is two words; "tuomio" and "kirkko". Tuomio means doom/judgement and kirkko means church.

As a Finn, I do agree with you that Central Helsinki, where you were, is an expensive area, but if you go anywhere else in Finland you'll find it a lot cheaper. Even if you visit Espoo or Vantaa just next to Helsinski.
There's a restaurant called Wanda's in Vantaa, the prices are pretty much the same as the tourist traps. The only "cheap" places in Helsinki are Nepalese or Asian.

Well some were average. Like burger in restaurants is usually about 15 € and beer or cider 6-8€ if not happy hour etc.. But yep some were those fancy more expensive places at Kämp area, which is the most expensive place in city.
If anyone is confused that why is it so expensive in Helsinki, no that is not the case.

Went to most expensive part of Helsinki... and to one of the most expensive grills in the *TOURIST AREA* to say that its one of the cheapest. (I get that its your first time in finland but still there are much cheaper places literally 500m away.) and the beer... basic beer is from 4 to 7€ and premium beer and imports go up to 12€ or something (but yes is very expensive that I will not deny)

Seems pretty comparable to prices here in Canada, especially in the touristy area of a major city.

That Rahka sounded interested. From what you've shown of the city of Helsinki looks well laid out and the architecture all compliments each other. And that plaza looked awesome. I would love the sauna.
Apparently rahka is "quark" in English, and like he said it's basically just thicker yogurt, almost like cheese. It's made from sour milk and it can be plain or flavored with berries and such. And yes, the Helsinki city center war largely designed by German architect Carl Engel, who also designed the city centers of Tallinn and St. Petersburg, and the fairly strict grid pattern and neo-classical buildings are evidence of that. But I wouldn't say all the architecture compliments each other perfectly, the 60's and 70's architecture sprinkled in between is pretty ugly and many such buildings are quite the eyesores, for example the white cube building next to the pool, designed by famous architect Alvar Aalto and thus forever protected from demolishing, unlike the beautiful 1800's building that used to be there. At least Helsinki was able to protect their historical city center better from the 60's trend of demolishing old historical buildings and replacing them with new bland buildings better than some other Finnish cities. The former capital Turku is the best example of this, over half of the old historical city center was demolished in the 60's to make way for these "more efficient" buildings with more floor area and lower floor height. This phenomenon is even called "Turun tauti" (Turku disease) in Finland.
It is really nice to see videos from foreingners about Finland and especially Helsinki. I'm living in capital area and there is also way more cheaper places also in Helsinki if you travel little bit away from city centre :) I hope you had nice trip in Helsinki, Finland!

I don't travel as much as you. But every year I choose a couple of countries and cross the atlantic. Last year was Berlin, oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Warsaw, kiev, Sofia, Skopje, pristine, Istanbul, valetta, Rome and Lisbon

I am sure locals know where you don't pay top price. Sure it would be expensive compared to perhaps the US or Australia food wise but some of those places seen here are posh places and that would be expensive anywhere in the world...like a sandwich in a 5 star hotel will cost $25
eating out is quite expensive in Finland, that is why many Finns make their own food and eat at home. If you try to eat really cheap home made food it costs less than 100€ / month.
Has to be some REALLY cheap food or you're eating only pasta with ketchup. I live alone, don't eat out and don't even eat anything fancy or super expensive and still my food costs are about 200€ a month. Its doable sure to live with 100€, but that is a bit hardcore in my opinion. OR I'm just doing it wrong, will take any tips on how to drop my food costs :D
As a college student in Finland I tend to spend little over 5 euros per day on food. That makes about 150-200 euros for a month. So most of my studying support (250€/month).

It's a good thing I'm going to be making my own food and shopping at Lidl for meal prep/lunches because I'm staying the whole month.
Those were all expensive touristy restaurants, but like anywhere, I'm sure if you go a bit off the beaten track you could find cheaper options where local working class people would go
Hi Gabriel, I know you got to be glad your heading home all that traveling must have tired out a bit you'll get a chance to relax and unwind. I couldn't believe you stood out there in that cold weather with hardly anything on amazing. Those prices remind me of NY City prices.
About 15 or 20 years ago there was a long article about two guys from UT Austin who bought a cheapo car and drove from Austin, TX to Tierra del Fuego, then back up to Rio, where they sold the car and actually made a profit. They were trying to have a good time for cheap while seeing just how much value they could get for their money (a lot.) You have to take a ferry from Panama to Columbia because there is a 50 mile gap in the road. It would be interesting to see something like that in a series of videos. You could even pick a friend to go along for the ride, which might make a interesting collaborative video effort.

If you're going to eat at a proper restaurant with nice food it will cost a decent amount of money. If you want to eat at a decent place with ok food it'll cost significantly less. This is the way it is everywhere.
2:18 In finnish it's rahka, in english it's quark. The non flavoured, fat free and sugar free version is popular among bodybuilders due to it's high amount of protein.
But that "Kuningatar rahka" which you got there is so sugary they wouldn't eat that much.
Did you notice that on the restaurant was admiral Juhani Kaskiala at the next table. He was commander of the Finnish Defense Forces couple years ago.

There are many quality lunch options as well. Usually the prices are around 10 euros. Worth mentioning is that Finnish lunch is a proper meal so you don't necessarily have to have a dinner later in the evening.

Nice place for beers in Helsinki is BrewDog. They have a lot of draft beers and not much music. Cool place to talk and chill out and not splash too much money.
Actually, 'Helsingin' means 'Helsinki's'. Helsinki is the Finnish name of Helsinki.
Scandinavian countries have a free wild camping system. According to my info, it is possible to go camping on the rough almost everywhere in Sweden, Norway and Finland. According to the same info, they often put even bbq and wood fire system. The main question are the temperatures, july and august are balancing around 20 degrees Celsius. It is interesting to go there in the summer, and afterwards it's cooling off south.
Sea Horse is a great restaurant. It has a weird wibe to it, like time is still there.
A quick city tour in Helsinki really gets on your wallet, but its not that bad when you travel into any smaller town and avoid buying too much from the main streets like you should always do while travelling. Barcelona for example is a great one for this, 1 liter beer on the mainstreet restaurants was 13 euros, but you can walk into a bar next block and pay only 1-2 euros for the same.
I don’t know if you knew this but if you notice in the city square where the cathedral is, a lot of the buildings including the cathedral were built in the Czarist Russian style of architecture. That’s because from 1809 until 1917, Finland was part of Russia, so therefore it resulted in a lot of Russian style buildings scattered throughout the city. Finland gained its independence in 1917, partly because at the time, Finland was a very religious country that opposed communism and they didn’t want to be a part of the Soviet Union. Finland isn’t very religious anymore, and is in fact one of the least religious countries in the world now, because over the years the church lost a lot of its influence on the government. I’ve never been to Finland but I’m kind of a history nerd. Would love to go to Finland though. Looks really cool
Restaurant Sea Horse (the last one you visited) is nice classic place, it has huge food portions (when compared to Helsinki standard). It actually happens to be about the only restaurant where you need to leave your coat and pay for it. (It's because they want to be old school and have the man in the front as they did 80yrs ago). Only other places for mandatory coat-charge are the late-night discos. Also due to the fact that tipping is not mandatory in Finland, these prices are not even as expensive as in NYC.
Helsinki is the capital of Finland and more south you are the more expensive it is. Ofc turist attractions are also expensive anywhere so best thing is go up north and buy your food from places that dont look so glamore

Nice video Gabriel! Next time you visit Helsinki, be sure to stop by New Bamboo Center at Annankatu street (city centre; you almost walked by it at your video). Chinese-Malesian restaurant with extra super magnificient curry-tofu. 10.90€ gets you enormous dish with all the extra rice you can eat at no extra cost. Atmosphere is something you have to experience in person. Super cosy and staff is so nice. Has been my number one restaurant for 20 years :-).
You were hanging in most expensive area in Finland. If you go to other places, you can easily cut 25% or more from prices. Anyway, nice video :)

It is true that Finland is expensive but you make Helsinki sound way more expensive that it actually is :D It's very easy to eat a nice meal and have a glass of wine/beer for under 20euros if you travel about 10 minutes away from central Helsinki. It's only the very central part and all the touristy attractions that are super expensive.

Do keep in mind Helsinki has higher cost of living than pretty much most other cities in Finland, almost a separate entity from the rest of the country.

Nice Video, I am visiting Helsinki next year September. Will stay at Diana Park Hostel. Having watched some other videos, I found buying a Helsinki pass to be very convenient. Tram Line #2 goes through all major attractions. Market Square is a great place for shopping souvenirs.

Chicks at the hostel kitchen are being funny ! I keep a half liter stainless steel pot (flat bottom ), so whenever I am bit confused about prices , what , where and about the quality etc. I just purchase 6 eggs and boil them in the pot and sometimes packaged noodles swell to keep my stomach fill and energies me and with some bananas/tomatoes or sweet curd !

You can actually get food and drinks for 1 week with 20€. Resteraunts just usually are a bit pricey. If you go instead to markets like s-market.
Great video Gabriel. You have talent to give people the real experience. Next time, I strongly suggest you take a trip to Finnish Lapland. Some amazing scenes and pure nature there. Easy to fly there from Helsinki Airport.
Yes, Helsinki is very pricy especially in the center where tourists visit. Come to the countryside and I'll grill you a salmon straight from a river with baby potatoes right from the backyard. Just bring your own beer.

Living in Helsinki, its not that expensive if you know where to go.. Like 1 mile outside of central all prices are like half from that, what was in video.. Ofc if want to go to 4-5 stars restaurants, it will cost more :D Like that König was 4 stars in 2017, but seriously, you will get same or even better food from small restaurants outside from central.. And there is Kämp near of König, there small coffee cost 10e and its like served in golden cup.. Sandwich 15-20e.. Hotel room to night 400e, small one... Penthouse - 20,000e per night.
Please consider that you where in the main tourist and prestige area of the capital and biggest city of Finland, just a few steps around the corner prices drop. Except of alcohol, it stays expensive everywhere :D
for example: Public transportation day ticket for Helsinki city area is 9€ (first day, every additional day 4,5€) (includes Metro, Tram, Busses, and Suomenlinna ferry)

As a Finn i would say Tuomiokirkko roughly translated to English is Judgement church :)
In Helsinki (Helsingfors) the prices are higher than for example in Österbotten (Vaasa/Vasa) The average sallary is also alot higher in the capital area than in the rest of Finland..
When it comes to travelling on a tight budget, cheapest option to eat is McDonalds (if you really want to go there). Double Cheeseburger meal is around 6 euros ($7). But during lunch time you should find a lunch buffet where you can eat as much as you want with certain price, typically 10-12 euros ($11-14). Food is usually pretty good there. One such option is Unicafe which is the cafe of Helsinki University and where the students go to eat too. It may not be open during summer season though. Another one I personally like is O'Learys on Forum shopping center.
Beer gets cheaper further you go from that center area shown in this video. Hard to find a big one under 6 euros ($7) though if you stay in Helsinki city area. But public drinking is not prohibited in Finland so there is always an option to grab couple cold ones from store and go for a picnic at least if you are in bigger company.
Cheapest option to sleep apart from hostels is to buy overnight ticket to a Helsinki-Tallinn ferry. You can find cabins sometimes for as little as 25 euros ($29) and as a bonus you'll see Baltic Sea and Tallinn too. There are two ferry companies offering this possibility, Tallink and Viking Line.
Good option for Hop-on Hop-off buses are trams at least if you want to see just the sceneries. One good option is to take a tram number 3 uphill from railway station and go through lines 3-2-7 until you come back to railway station. Tram ticket is valid for 80 minutes and you can use as many trams, buses, local trains and metros as you want during that period as long as you stay on Helsinki zone (Zone A). Cheapest and easiest way to get tickets is the HSL app that you can link to your credit card.
P.S.The name of the restaurant in the video is currently VENN. Name used to be König (German for King) between 1892-2015 so since it's a century old name I guess they wanted to keep it visible too. Ravintola is just Finnish for restaurant.

If you eat at lunch time (11am to 2 or 3 pm) you can find plenty of all you can eat buffets for under 10 €. There are a lot of cheaper places to eat and buy food than those you mentioned

Correction: Helsinki is not cheap, you need to travel further inland.
I'd also recommend rentals as opposed to hostels, provided you're willing to commit to something, Finland can be an amazing place to live. For example, optical internet (300Mbps or 35MB/s) can be as little as €60 per month.
Well not all prices differ. Same prices in markets and stores in whole country. Also medium price restaurants seem to be about same price in all cities. But as for rent and things like that Helsinki is more expensive.

Walk away from the main streets and you will actually find better and cheaper food. (For example a whole pizza for about 6$)
You could have had reasonable priced meals at Unicafes which few of them are located right at the center. They are catering mainly for university students as you would guess by the name and for them the prices are ridiculously cheap by any standards, full set of meals starting around 2.5 euros. Can't remember from top of my head how much the regular price is but should still be good value for the money.
Erottajanpuisto = Erottaja (the name of a street in Helsinki, "n" at the end is like Erottaja's) puisto = a park.

I went to a rainbow gathering on the UP. Then I had a flight out of Minneapolis, gave myself a day-and-a-half to hitchhike across Wisconsin and a few hours before my flight I'd barely made any progress. Lucked out and got a ride all the way there just in time to get the flight.

Right on man, sounds like a good one. That's funny that you're going to the Diana hostel as well. Pray to god that the same guy who was snoring when I was there has left by now, haha. One of the worst snorers in all of my travels, felt like the bed was vibrating since he was right above me. Other than that a cool place.
