I think to make it cool, it has to either evoke strong ties to the past or have a new twist. A lot of people don't have a connection to the banjo, unless they listen to country. I don't have a connection to it, but I know it can be a cool instrument. Recently I've begun to really appreciate the harp, as used in Son Jarocho music from Veracruz. It's a similar sound to the banjo.
