    This is the most fantastic show for home improvement, the trades and general building/construction. You can tell anytime any of the show hosts begin their teaching moments the years of experience shine through. I learn a lot every time I watch, and have been able to fix my own home numerous times just by watching and learning.

    • @milanroets9697
      @milanroets9697 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was thinking the same thing. Swirls create air bubbles which can cause cracks. I talked to a 25 year professional tile installer who does very high end homes. He said he has been swirling for several years and has never had an issue. Personally I would have put in more leveling clips as well.

      You're the expert huh? They didn't use mortar.

    • @bigpjohnson
      @bigpjohnson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've set some larger tiles. Trowel the thinset all in one direction and back butter the tiles. Set the tile down about 1/2" or so from final position, and press down and slide it over. Collapses the ridges and get maximum coverage. If a tile is sunken below adjacent tiles, remove, retrowel the floor, and trowel mortar onto the tile itself. That usually lifts it enough while maintaining good coverage.
      I'm sure those guys know what they are doing, but a lot of tilers try to lay large format tiles like they used to lay regular size tiles with random pattern trowelling. That wont always fly.

    I love Tom, but I'd be using my PLS laser for some of these maneuvers. It has a very thin line & works in one or multiple directions at the same time. It's like one of my favorite tools.
    AND...once I figure where I'm gonna place my shims, I use a little liquid nails behind the jamb & a small dab between the shims so they are locked in PERMANENTLY. Especially useful when installing the shims so they don't drop out as your adjusting them. Anyone ever have that problem?? Probably not!! This way if the shims decide to move a hair or split over the years, the glue will hold them from ever falling or slipping around.

      Tiles like that work well in modern or MCM houses. A lot of empashis goes on the small details and simplicity, or making things not stand out. My house is an old Modern house and I wish I would have gone with large format concrete look tiles versus the faint grey wood look tiles I used. In most other traditional designs, they dont fit.

    When tiles are that large you never use a mastic, you always need to use a mortar mix. The mastic they are using will take weeks to dry.

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mastic doesn't dry, it sets. Mix it up, seal it in a container and it will still set.

    • @bigpjohnson
      @bigpjohnson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DiscoFang No, mastic dries. It can also become wet and soft again. Its the only reason it can be sold pre-mixed! Thinset and mortar begin chemical reactions when water is added, which causes them to permanently set up.

    The fireplace is hardly the "cutting edge " of modern design if it was designed in the 60s! That is almost 60 years old- not saying that this old design doesn't fit in the house , but it is hardly really new and modern anymore.

      Modern design is a style from the 60's. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-century_modern

    • @borikkiv
      @borikkiv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mully006I realise that it is a set style called "modern-they usually on here are calling it "mid-century modern" which makes sense. I don't think that there can be a cutting edge to it still. You couldn't talk about "cutting edge" Federal, unless you meant that it was cutting edge 200 years ago. I suppose that could be what he means, but it didn't come across that way to me. By the way do you know what more modern styles are around now? I mean modern as in new, not "Modern" as in "Mid-century Modern".

    Ladies & Gents, 21:00 - 21:09 is not how you accurately measure 27¾. I wished the young guy would've double checked the old guy on camera and tell him, no it's not, "right there." That could've easily been ⅛ to ¼ out. SMH.

    guys its time to leave the 1970s and get a laser level to start....what a waste of time. This is clear evidence of someone who has become great in old ways of doing things and refuses to change despite many advantages. Just like my old man. Also, if the floor is not 2-3mm flat within every 10 ft then floor prep is required. If its close to that range and the odd hump can be knocked down you should still use 1 clip per foot to allow for bowing in the tile and small variance in the substrate. I guarantee that if the floor is not in that ballpark, using 2 clips per 4ft will definitely have lippage. These fellas have a lot to change to be able to call themselves "tile setters" in today's world. Its also guys like this that think their 2 ft Stabila level is going to get the counter top perfect end to end and why backsplash's have to be cheated in one way or another 99% of the time. I think they should rename the show "these old techniques".

    This ultra-rectilinear crap is ridiculous. Talk about waste of energy in heat treating useless volumes of air and outdoors under driveway, and paving with oversized materiél which is extremely picayune in being straight, but don’t like needed percolation gaps to accumulate rain water and transport it to cisterns (dry wells)
    These shows did this house is a waste.
