It is always a few republicans that tend to put Democratic national candidates over the top, it was a few republicans that switched parties to keep the Democratic Party from going extinct or becoming too radicalized at times in history, they’ve even sometimes switched parties at the local level when the republicans started having boss Hogg level control over a certain county region or district. Some politicians in Pennsylvania were known for switching back and forth several times in their career if one party drifted too radical or too far away from their positions they didn’t stay with that party they stayed with their beliefs and constituents and ran for the other party or as independent or write in candidate. Politicians that work to help people at the more local levels have managed to win against fully funded and backed opponents from both the democrats and republicans at the same time as a write in candidate when they weren’t put on the ballot due to party machinations/shenanigans/rigging the system.
That is why I was shocked they said Trump won Pennsylvania in 2016. We know better we are taught better. It made no sense. Normally when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s Pennsylvania would have been the first state to openly shame him and call him a bully and phony and tag him as a McCarthyist fear monger. And to vote for him against Hilary Clinton, someone who people in Pennsylvania were waiting over twenty years nearly 25 years for that campaign and a chance to vote for her, is nearly unconscionable. As far as I’m aware Bill Clinton is the only President who planned to fly into Clearfield County or land in Centre County and drive to Clearfield County ever, and it was only cancelled last minute like the day he was coming because of a foreign policy crisis or him being suddenly very sick or both I can’t recall what the papers and local tv news said at the time.
